This game deserves a lot of credit for the incredible pixel sprites, backgrounds and music. (Those, alone, are worth giving it a shot!) The level design is pretty samey across the whole game, and the game is fairly short, as well. It's absolutely worth a play if you're into Action Platformers or Retro Revival Metroidvanias, but it doesn't do much to reinvent the genre.

At it's best, Mummy Demastered is a treat to see, hear and play. It doesn't overstay its welcome, which is great, but it doesn't do anything new with itself in the second half of the game. Definitely worth buying if you see it on sale, but there are plenty of other Metroidvanias, even by WayForward, which do more to satisfy.

Engrossing yet short, but don’t pay full price. At $10, I squeaked out barely 6 hours of gameplay. And the game itself is a riff on the industry’s habit of adapting movies into video games that have little to do with the source material. It’s fun, but forgettable. If you haven’t played The Messenger, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Salt and Sanctuary, buy those instead. Save this long in-jokeEngrossing yet short, but don’t pay full price. Pretty good game. The map is quite good, the upgrades are decent, the weapons quite cool, the mechanics in general are working allright - but it's all a bit stale. The rooms get quite repepetive, and there are hardly any original designs at all. The enemies are OK, but after a point the whole game feels a bit repetitious, and just doesn't really go anywhere. There are too few hooks to kind of keep you going, in my opinion. Still, I did enjoy it for a good few hours, and for the price I paid for it (on sale), it was value for money. Expand

The Mummy Demastered isn't a bad game, but does stand apart from its progenitors in the genre in ways both interesting and annoying. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 22M]

The Mummy Demastered feels less like a movie tie-in and more like a love letter to the metroidvania genre. The art style will appease a retro gamer appetite while it brings some modern elements to keep it fresh and engaging. If you're a fan of games of this ilk, then it is a must-have purchase. If you're not sure what metroidvania is, give it a go anyway. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

The Mummy Demastered gives Switch owners a Metroidvania style game, while also delivering an experience that brings in some twists of its own. It has a few small warts that hold it back from the classic status of the video game franchises that inspired it, but the fact that can be said for a licensed game in 2017 is nothing short of remarkable.
