The least Zelda-like game in the entire franchise by far, full of building mechanics that complicate basic actions that could be accomplished simply by walking or climbing in the previous game.
Except for the underground, which is a boring and dark area, and the sky, which is quite small y wasted, Hyrule feels like a completely lazily recycled map.

Things like Kolog seeds have returned just as tedious as the previous game (even more) and for some reason all the Sheikah technology has magically disappeared.

If you want to play TotK and haven't played BotW it is time to get yourself a switch, any of these two games by themselves are enough reason to get one really.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is literally the best game I have ever played. It improves every aspect of Breath of the Wild, and even though I haven't finished the game yet, the 30+ hours I have played are by far the best experience I've had

The game reuses nearly everything from breath of the wild. Map is mostly unchanged, you still progress by collecting korok seeds, completing shrines, and going to towers that unlock map fragments/act as waypoints. They totally overstated the presence of dungeons, dungeons are essentially glorified divine beasts. Overall it feels like a DLC, and for $70, it's absolutely not worth the price tag.

Tears of The Kingdom expands on the previous game exactly where players found most fun: creativity. Exploration was one of Breath of the Wild highest praises, but the ingenuity necessary to overcome puzzles or just survive in the map has been (apparently) noted by the Zelda devs and TOTK simply delivers all of that. Link's new abilities are the natural evolution from his last adventure and, if you have played BOTW, you'll certainly enjoy this game even more.
That said, if you are into Zelda but specially open world rpgs, this one is a must. Play it slowly, enjoy the exploration, the soundtrack and happy gaming!

The very begining of the game is already from the start, nothing like what we were shown in trailers. It feels very rushed. Then, you wake up in basically what it the Great Plateau except, in the Sky. I do mean it basically is the Great Plateau, even it's shape and structure is similar. They make you do 4 shrines (yes, the god-awful shrines are back) to get your powers then you go to the surface, dropping near a new village, which I thought at 1st was interesting to see an evolution here since people are gathering to rebuild Hyrule. Here, you get the paraglider and then proceed to a Skyview Tower, which is just a goofy ass Sheikah Tower (yes, Ubisoft's tower climbing to uncover the map is back as well...yaaaay

So.. am I reviewing Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom? You’ll never know.. because the first few hours of TotK gameplay are LAZILY identical.

Korok seeds, shrines, towers for visibility? There's zero added structure/innovation to the game's functionality. Everyone is fawning over a reskin with some new tools/powers that are even less 'Zelda' than they were in BotW.

Oh, and the framerate is absolutely deplorable.

It is difficult to succinctly summarize this masterpiece in words. Words elude me despite my greatest efforts, so the best way to describe the incredible excellence of Tears of the Kingdom is by explaining how it impacted my life. Prior to the game’s release, I was your standard big apple lawyer who did not have a life outside of work; I was no different to those World of Warcraft players who dedicated every single waking moment of their lives grinding hours away for a cause that - ultimately - was meaningless. My girlfriend (and eventual fiancee) of four years left me after months of only being able to spend, at most, eight hours a week with her. She said it was a blameless break-up, but I knew it was my fault, and even now I still regret that I didn’t spend enough time with her.. Shortly after she left me, I was dropped into a world of sheer loneliness, much like the chasms in the depths of Hyrule. My life as a lawyer felt more like that of a mining Mokoblin than a brave explorer on the surface. My days comprised sitting at my desk for 16 hours a day, journeying to and from the office for around two hours, and then sleeping for a maximum of five hours total. Eating a full meal was mostly a luxury, although I didn’t feel the urge to eat on account of my severe depression. I didn’t really live at this point: I became a semi-sentient automated creature that lived in a sort of twilight. I was aware of my existence, but felt no desire to engage with it. In 2022, Nintendo announced the release date for Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to a game that I’d invested hundreds of hours into while I was still studying for my degree. I thoroughly enjoyed Breath of the Wild, and I was excited to see what Tears of the Kingdom had in store. I must admit that I doubted the extent to which Tears of the Kingdom could surpass its predecessor, a widely acclaimed game that is equally revered as a masterpiece. Still, I was happy to indulge into any activity to at least feel something. Fast forward to midnight on 12 May 2023. I had pre-downloaded the game in the morning prior to going to work, and felt some excitement for the first time, knowing I’d be able to play an enjoyable game; at the very least, it would connect me with my younger self, like a sort of nostalgic trance to alleviate the emptiness of my present day.

This. Game. Is. Incredible. The sheer freedom to explore; the freedom to test new weapons, foods, items; the freedom to build novel machines and traverse the sky, the surface, the depths; the freedom to speak with whomever, fight whomever, defend whomever, and create whatever. I was limitless. The period of creative drought that plagued me for years had suddenly - overnight - ended with a deluge of creative freedom and curiosity. There was no barrier to anything in this world; the only limitations in any moment were my creativity and commitment to solve problems. I was able to play five hours before having to go to work. I didn’t sleep that night, but I didn’t need to: the unprecedented excitement and thrill that I felt in those short hours of gameplay left me energised and hungry for more. It was as if I was reborn as a new human being. Work was miraculously quiet over the weekend, and I was able to dedicate 40 hours into the game, having spent only four hours a night sleeping. I did not move from my couch; I didn’t need to: I had nowhere else to be, as the entire world was right at my fingertips, ready for me to unlock every inch of the surface, sky, and chasms like a sealed gate of eon waiting to be opened. In my journeys across Hyrule, I began to reflect on my own childhood: the years playing different Zelda games as I grew up. It was as if every single Zelda game was designed to lead up to this moment, and all of my life’s experiences were predestined for me to enjoy it. I began to recall what happiness felt like, I began to remember what it meant to be free. I began to see that life wasn’t about grinding countless hours into a job to make enough money to live “comfortably”. How is life comfortable if you spend 16 hours at a desk with your back arched the whole time? When I fought my first temple boss, I remembered what it meant to be courageous and strategic; that sometimes, the best solutions are the simplest ones. My hours of gameplay taught me more about myself than my professional therapist did in two years. I wrote my notice last night, and I intend to resign tomorrow. I have enough unspent money to sustain myself for a few months, and I intend to delve deeper into this game to understand what further courage and meaning I can derive for myself. For my own life.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
