TOTK was exceptionally better than BOTW. More expansive, better story, longer main story content, fantastic improved weapon system, and most importantly it actually felt like a Zelda game this go around. 9/10. However my biggest gripe, korok seeds!

In future entries please remove things like korok seeds, the sign guy, and how the shrines are carried out. I get that it's a children’s game, but the puzzle experience behind these trivial things were just tedious and ultimately unrewarding. I felt Shrines, signs, and seeds were forced tutorials that you had to play through for their mediocre rewards. At this point I kinda miss that heart gems were just findable in cave, the puzzles of those I mentioned above were simply demeaning and time wasting (korok seeds especially). I get it, put the thing in the thing, get the thing to the thing, which translates to stop what your adhd focus is on and do this thing instead so you forget and wander around aimlessly after you’re done. One thing that could remedy this is to instead make the weapon storage more reliant on rare ingredients that you must find in all corners of Hyrule to check the box of needing a player to traverse as much of the map as possible. You could reward players for picking up every rock by finding exclusive ingredients like this. As for sign guy, just don’t… for the shrines make caves this type of puzzle and instead of bubbelgems make the reward heart pieces. You already got rid of Sheika shrines, might as well put caves where they were and call it a day!

In contrast, I felt the best puzzle experiences were the riddles, armor caves, and random discoveries scattered throughout hyrule (though some of those could’ve packed better rewards than **** like sapphires and ****ty weapons). These experiences felt mystical and gave me the feeling I was actually discovering something no one else had. It was absolutely an enjoyable experience!

Another thing I enjoyed was the refreshing new enemies and the return of familiar Zelda baddies. It padded out the roster that grew stale in BOTW. Even though these enemies got pretty boring after a while, I found it was enough to make an enjoyable experience filled with enough novelty to keep things interesting. The size of the game is also impressive for only 16gb of space. There are pretty much 3 maps to explore! One of them is filled with much of the same content, but it makes for a good pallet cleanser to contrast the rest of your exploration through Hyrule if it starts getting stale. The last boss felt like a real Zelda last boss, although the challenge isn’t really there. I remember some of the Zelda last bosses actually being difficult before in games before BOTW. The difficulty of this game is very high in the beginning but diminishes to severally easy once you make it past the midpoint of understanding the basic concepts of each aspect of the game from cooking, building, and fusing. That’s a big weakness, but one I don’t have an answer for except that you should make the difficulty scale with the power ups. All in all I had a fun time, even though I collected everything and felt a pang of betrayal at the lack of rewards for all my troubles. I felt the most rewarded for completing all the main story content though, and I feel the game shines with it. (My last small gripe is the a jab at the cutscenes for completing each of the big main milestones in the game… they are all the damn same… what a missed lore opportunity.)

Genius nintendo had seen everyone talking 'skyward sword' cloud kingdom, and completely hid the underworld that's is the same size as the overworld. It's focused, it's truly story driven, there is no boredom in terms of vast empty areas. The music is beautiful, the puzzles work, the annoying aspects of botw have been addressed. It's near perfect. The series is in the best possible hands with this dev. Total masterpiece. If you are looking at graphics as the make or break, don't purchase, this game is not for you. If you are driven by innovation and mechanics... masterpiece. Expand

When I heard that they were working on a sequel I was quite surprised and curious how they would work on a sequel to a game that didn't seem to be possible to improve. After the trailer with the gameplays, I was left with a divided feeling, because I thought it was too incredible, but with a feeling of concern, because the proposal seemed to be something impossible to happen on such a small console. Today that I played Zelda TotK I have the conclusion that they really delivered everything they promised and much more! They broke the Zelda BotW barrier of freedom that I didn't even think could improve, and in Zelda TotK they improved EVERYTHING! I don't want to give SPOILERS so I'm just going to say that the phrase "Sky Is The Limit" today makes even more sense in Zelda TotK Expand

A perfect sequel to an already perfect game. Everything that made Breath of the Wild great is equal to or greater in this sequel. I had my concerns going into this game, specifically regarding it losing its magic because its on the same Hyrule map as BOTW, and potentially over focusing on the building aspects that were covered in the previews. While the map of Hyrule is largely the same, it feels fresh and exciting to traverse the similar terrains. Following the events of the first game, while the outline of the terrain is similar, it feels very much like a new world to explore. In a way, it made it exciting to revisit the same areas to see how they were changed from the first game - I'm not saying this as a biased Zelda fan, if you enjoyed the first game, it truly is exciting to explore the world in this game. My other concern about the focus on the building is also not an issue, I was worried that it would take away from the exploration that I expect out of a Zelda game and turn it into a Lego game. This is absolutely not an issue, and they did a truly impressive job of allowing you to play the game your way. If you were one of the people that were really into the physics of BOTW, then this game added a ton of content for you, but if you're someone who enjoyed walking and exploring like myself, you can still do that with minimal tapping into the building physics. Truly the strongest element of this game is the ability to go about it your way. Most often there is no single correct solution to a puzzle - you just given the tools and you solve it your way, which in my opinion is far better than the awful direction that most puzzle games have gone over the recent decades where the is only ONE solution and instead of focusing on finding a solution, you are focused on thinking like the developer. They really made the shrines and puzzles fantastic in this game, and they were already pretty fun in the last game. The exploration in this game is really the best in gaming. BOTW was perfect as it was, but in hindsight there were a lot of areas that felt a bit empty. This game filled out the world to the point where you will reroute your path more times than you can count because you’re constantly getting distracted with side quests, hidden caves, interesting landmarks, random NPCs, enemy bases, etc. Although this uses the same map as BOTW, the entire world feels completely different and very well filled out. I’m 45 hours in and I have only completed one of the four main temples, probably explored 20% of the overworld map, explored a few of the sky areas (which to be fair, are a bit sparse), and only spent 30 minutes in the underworld. Depending on your play style, this will easily be a 100+ hour game (obviously you can rush through it much faster), possible 150-200, and it will truly fly by. It’s not a drag to force yourself through, it’s just satisfying exploration that is not replicated in any other game. That’s not to say other games don’t have fantastic exploration, but none of them have this sense of personal adventure like this one.

Everything that made BOTW great is present in this game. The graphics aren't the highest caliber but they are absolutely beautiful. The sound design is flawless, still among the best I've ever experienced in a game - its a beautiful balance of silence and ambient noises and very peaceful and nonintrusive piano music. The story is far more expansive and engaging than the previous game, which I found to be one of the weakest parts of BOTW. This game is absolutely among one of the best I have played. I can tell because from the first two hours of exploring the world post-tutorial, I already thought to myself that I didn't want the game to end. I want to take my time, I want to stop to explore things, I want this game to last. Its a masterpiece. The best open world game out there. I’m usually a harsh critic too, check my other reviews.

    Bien jugado, Nintendo.

In fact, since botw was such a great game, it might be for the best that we get the same major elements in a vastly newer light. And this game is indeed REALLY fun. Not one moment do you feel like you have to go searching for something new to do, like what sometimes happens in the botw late game. Just following the main story opens up infinite branches of adventures, and each branch leads to new adventures just as exciting. The map, while technically the same, is changed to such a degree that exploring it feels brand new again. That's not to mention the entire depth map (as detailed and as large as Hyrule), which is plenty to satisfy that need to discover a completely new world. If I had to say something negative of this game, it would be that the skies could be expanded further, especially considering how heavily it was featured in the marketing. However, if the only core complaint of this game is that there isn't enough of it, I think that only goes to show how amazing it is. Expand

This level of polish in an open world sandbox is a rarity in today's industry, especially on a console that for all intents and purposes should not be able to run the damn thing.

This game only gets a point off in my book because I do believe the world could have been better developed in the 6 years it had in the oven. Don't get me wrong, there is a TON to do here, but I found the two extra maps, the skies and the depths, to be lacking in one way or another the more I played. The skies, for example, are far too repetitive beyond the starting area, and the depths could've done with two or three more visual environments. However, given everything that is done right in Hyrule proper, this was hardly more than a nagging annoyance at times.

The main quests and side quests are great which is the same as exploring the world where you will find yourself finding something interesting that side tracks you almost every turn you make. Last but not least this massive open-world game adds physic breaking abilities and the game launch experience is smooth which is impressive for a game like this on the Nintendo Switch no less.

Dispelling some misconceptions, this is not a like a "DLC", totally unfair and irrational to call it such. This game is a full fledged sequel. This game had its own development cycle, the level of new content and novelty is huge. Yes, there are "recycled assets", that does not mean the developers were lazy with it. This is meant to be a sequel in the BOTW universe, so of course there will be returning characters and locations. Keep in mind that A LOT was done to revamp the map, and a lot was also added.

In case it was forgotten or not known, Nintendo made it clear after Skyward Sword that they had to go in a new direction or risk the Zelda franchise dying out, the old formula had been tapped out for novelty and creativity. It's called innovation, and if it's one thing the developers did exceptionally well with TotK, is build even more innovation on top of the previous entry.

    Solid Improvements:
    - A LOT of quality of life additions, smarter use of hub systems so you're not lost roaming around, character progression more streamlined and flexible.
    - Good story, major improvement over BOTW. More intriguing themes, more main characters. The game world is way more busy than the prequel with tons of sub plots.
    - More variety of NPCs, more in depth interactions than the prequel.
    - Combat system has been enhanced by allowing the combination of weapons with an item system, allowing for a variety of different effects/strategies.
-New mobs added and some interesting enemy designs.
-Better dungeons and a return to more traditional boss fights (no more generic blight bosses).
-Highly novel abilities and gameplay mechanics makes for more efficient travel and also allows for more fun and rewarding exploration, especially when coupled with fascinating new map features.
-New item collection systems adds extra layer to exploration and gives more incentive to adventure off the beaten path.
-Improvement on shrines, puzzle solving has more variety due to new mechanics. They are also easier to locate.
-Stable Association system has been vastly improved, much more central to character progression and story.

In terms of the cons, there are a few with the first one impacting gameplay the most:

-Outside of the towns/cities/hubs, the Hyrule field overworld is still vast with not much in between. The main challenge of the game comes in when the travelling ends up happening for extended periods. However, there are characters/quests added here and there to provide diversions when travelling, something that was almost non-existent in the prequel. Keep in mind that travelling is only ONE aspect one the game.
-Menu systems took a step back and are more simplistic. You have a greater variety of items to collect but organization is not very optimized. They do just enough, but could have been much better.
-Core combat remains largely unchanged, durability can still be a pain but it's built into the game, you're meant to constantly loot new weapons and there are now ways to enhance durability.
-Some new gameplay mechanics can at times be clunky, mainly the build mechanic. I find it gets better with more experience - majority of the time, not bothersome IMO.
-Dungeons similar to the Divine Beasts, still fun but lacking depth.
-Textures aren't ground breaking and at times performance can dip, but honestly this goes back to how Nintendo had to balance the Switch's capabilities while absolutely maxing out the game size, literally to the limit. I see it as a trade off more than anything - you need to keep this in mind. Of course graphics will be the same...BOTW and TotK are both Switch titles using the same hardware.
-Looting at times can be anti-climactic, with the reward not being worth the effort put in.
-Apparently Nintendo is down with Woke culture, more of a minor annoyance but it's in the game. Thankfully it's subtle more often than not.

In short, it's my opinion that in spite of the cons, the net sum of all that Nintendo has done to improve, innovate and build on BOTW is monumental in providing a fresh and fun experience for this Zelda outing, with replayability going up drastically. That's the reason I am giving it a 9, Nintendo has broken new ground back to back with their last two Zelda games.

In light of the FULL scope of TotK, it's a huge achievement for the Zelda franchise and a giant step forward. I think certain players are taking issue with the negative aspects of the game, and the fact that they carried over is compounding the reactions, but it's to the point where everything else is being thrown out in the overall evaluation.

If you have no issue riding over those couple of humps, then guaranteed you'll have a blast with this game which IMO is an outright classic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game a big mix of good and bad. First off, the combat is absolutely wrecked especially in the early game. The weakest enemies in the game will casually one-shot you while the big temple bosses can't do more than 2 hearts of damage at a time. This is a huge problem and it should be the other way around. I didn't have to redo a single temple boss yet struggle in areas with normal enemies until atleast halfway through the game. Then there's the plot... There are some emotional twists and turns near the end of the dragon tear cutscenes and when you get the master sword back, but aside from that the plot is the same as breath of the wild- the princess is gone the entire game and you have to save Hyrule castle by beating Ganon. The reused assets from Botw aren't as big of an issue as some people make them out to be but there are times when it does become very obvious, however it was nice that your horses carry over from Botw. I also thought the sheer amount of outfits and the quests for them was pretty cool, and the building system is fun as hell the screw around with once you get past the learning curve as well as the new weapon making system. All in all, not bad but not the best it could have been Expand

    2. The map and many more assets are heavily reused from the previous game so this is a 50% new game at most. This game should have had a new map
    3. The graphics are poor; the resolution is greatly reduced from the native 720p in both portable and big screen modes
    4. No voice acting for most dialogs. At the very least, all main plot dialogs should have been voiced. The main character of the game is Zelda; meanwhile Zelda switches from voice to TEXT in a middle of a dialog

Overall these downsides make this game feel rather underwhelming in comparison to the previous game from the series (Zelda Breath of the Wild). Nintendo should have fixed at least three of these downsides: 1, 2 and 4. Number 3 (graphics) is impossible to fix because of old Nintendo Switch hardware. With the three downsides fixed, this game could have scored 7/10 - a solid score in my opinion, but not possible right now

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
