This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I knocked off a couple points because the game Auto updated on me despite constantly canceling the download. I was holding back on doing the update because Nintendo made rupees super scarce in this game and duping glitches offset that and make the game more fun for my play style. Any fun that I've derived out of this game comes from it being a carbon copy of Breath of the Wild. I dislike the new building mechanics and feel like the fusion mechanic stresses the already strained inventory system to the point of it being unfun. Overall the game just feels clunky and unfinished. Early on you'll probably build the best vehicle in the game which is a basic hoverbike, there's no reason to make any modifications after you get the perfect one because any added items will either make you slower or drain your battery faster and any modifications will increase the zonite ore you need to build it. This vehicle basically breaks the game allowing you to sidestep any dungeon puzzles or inconvenience. They didn't want to spend extra development time to make exit routes out of the many caves so they just added ascend so they didn't have to worry about it. They reversed the topography and lowered the brightness and boom you have the depths. All of the sky islands just sit there in the sky static. It's a very lazy product. There's a scene right after you get Auto-build where Master kohga says "you stole it, I wanted that ability," THEN HE USES AUTOBUILD IN THE BOSS FIGHT

The temples are just glorified shrines that are pretty much the same as the Divine beasts: find and activate terminals then return to the boss fight area. A lot of the time you'll end up reaching the temple and terminals before the sage does and so you'll have to backtrack to find an arbitrary cutscene event before they'll join your party and help you.

The shrines aren't as memorable as the ways that you have to cheese a lot of the puzzles to get them to work properly. Many times I've had to shoot a pressure switch with a bomb arrow because I couldn't get the ball to bounce in the right way. Many people say that the game should be commended because it lets you solve puzzles in multiple ways but to me that just says poor game design because the intended way to solve the puzzle is usually either obtuse or just difficult because of the clunky controls. The multiple ways of solving a puzzle pretty much comes down to: do you spend half an hour combing a shrine for a stepping stool to reach a shrine chest or do you just use a bomb or rocket shield? Gone are the gyro shrines and the tests of strength and they were replaced by... well they kind of forgot to add a third of the shrines because they're all blessing shrines, which for the most part is fine because a lot of those shrines getting to the shrine is the challenge in puzzle, it just feels like maybe if you have more than a quarter of your shrines just be gimmes you either need less shrines or perhaps give the light orbs out in a different way. Shrine's kind of all fall into the same category where it's just: build the thing, at least in botw when you needed a different shika rune the whole shrine had a different feel to it, before you had cryo-puzzles, stasis puzzles, magnesis puzzles, and bomb puzzles, now they're all just building puzzles. Ascend and rewind just feel like debug mode abilities. We never see Rauru coming up through the floor so it's really weird to consider that a zonai ability. It feels like Nintendo was trying to debug the game and realized how crappy and frustrating their game was so they left some debug tools in to make the game playable. That's probably why some of the rewind shrines are clever and well put together: because they were added late in the production. Also why the game doesn't let you leave the great sky Island until you get all the abilities: because the game is UNPLAYABLE without ascend, you'll fall into a well or a hole or a cave and WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CLIMB OUT unless you use ascend. When your game's playability is dependent on a single debug ability maybe thats bad game design? IDK it annoyed the heck out of me.

I was excited to pick the game up because I wanted to see what they did with the Ganondorf character and it was hugely disappointed when he's only in four cutscenes and the final boss fight. HUGE missed potential, the game didn't give him any clear motivations, he's just being evil for the sake of being evil AGAIN. It's also never really addressed how the Gerudo way of life has been changed and it just feels like Nintendo really drop the ball on world building.

Basically, you're fine playing this game if you're just expecting BOTW 2. I'm mostly giving this game a low score because I feel that the game was MASSIVELY overhyped with people saying that the game has endless content. After I'd been playing the game for a month I already had the game half finished, the game is FAR from endless.

I don even have enough characters here to adequately address all of this game issues so I try to sum it up.

Nintendo somehow managed to make TotK even worse than BotW, which in of itself is a feat though. At least it looks good... for a Switch game. So I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! If you really feel you have to buy it don't pay 70$ for it, better spend that money on the lottery or so.

If you really feel you have to buy it don't pay 70$ for it, better spend that money on the lottery or so. Depending on condition you shouldn't spend more than 50-55$ on this atrocity. It's just the same game, same problems but different name. Sadly TotK only contains the same core problems of BotW with new, fancy mechanics that are actually useless where it counts (more on that below) instead of actually addressing the customers wish and solving the problems. It was pretty much to be expected. Nintendo doesn't care about their customers as long as they buy their s*it I guess that's just everywhere in capitalism but it dissapoints. The last GOOD (3D) Zelda (not counting remakes and HD remasters) is now over a decade old (I'm talking Twilight Princess).

Now, let's go down the list, shall we?
    1. Questmarker still only show the quest giver not the objective/objective area causing you to be lost more often.
    2. Until late in the game when you have maxed out armor enemies will easily kill you in a few hits and they like to swarm you making it more unlikely you life. That enemies get substitute with stronger color swaps and equipment as you progress will assure you will keep on dying.
    3. Speaking of Equipment, the game still ruins the fun with the durability system who just discourages the player to interact with anything moving (like 5 times as bad as BotW as you'll learn if you read more) and it's a 5 year old game from basically 2 Gens ago (since I wouldn't really call the Switch last gen on a technical level). There is ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON TO NOT GIVE OUT AT LEAST WEAK BASE EQUIPMENT TO THE PLAYER THAT DOESN'T BREAK OR NEEDS RECHARGING so players aren't left hanging if an enemy needs more hits than the weapons currently on you can take. Sure you can use "Fuse" to get SLIGHTLY stronger weapons but since you can't fuse Melee weapons or Shields with anything from the inventory directly and always have to first put down the material then fuse, it is pointless in active battle once the strengthening parts break off. Heck, even your Shield is as good as useless because enemies just hit through it when you hold it up, as if it wasn't even there, no matter what kind of weapon they use.
    4. This time it's 150 shrines aka puzzle rooms and 1000 Koroks to find and you need 400 something to max out slots.
    5. Then even with about 6 years passed in-game almost no one remembers the Hero who ended the apocalypse?! Attracting new players? If you do a direct sequel you do it for the fans it already has not to attract new players. Otherwise you only piss off the fans and won't get many new faces that haven't come with the first game.
    6. World is still big and mostly empty with more pointless empty space filled by the Sky Islands that are even more annoying to get from place to place since they are not connected in any way, shape or from to navigate other then gliding. Even less is going on in the depths asides endless darkness and a couple of extra bosses. The land of Hyrule in TotK is 80% monotonous, repetitive, filler landscape. What makes TotK worse than BotW in that regard is the depths itself are like 95% filler land because the few "dungeons" in it could easily be handled in a contained room and would save you the boring walking into them and the Sky Islands are also so much filler landscape. BotW/TotK has the BIGGEST YET MOST BORING DESIGNED HYRULE WORLDMAP since the later eighties where old ass, 8bit NES debut of the IP was. Further you still don't really want to explore the world for prices or discoveries because in most cases, you waste more resources than you get back. You won't even get a sense of accomplishing if you still choose doing so.
    7. Before I forget, what's with that stupid money and material grind?! The franchise IS SUPPOSED to be fun exploration and unique puzzle solving, not a monotones drag of money and material grind. You LITERALLY ARE FORCED TO save-scum because material drop rate is so absurdly low.
    8. We still only get puzzle rooms and mini-dungeons for the story. At least bosses are much cooler this time around.
    9. From my 370 hours when seeing the credits, most was spent traversing boring landscape and searching for ANYTHING interesting, even knowing the general area and only 15 hours actual game.

Really though, DON'T BUY THIS TRASH HEAP OF PROGRAM CODE FOR FULL PRICE, because YOU WILL REGRET IT. I can't believe I made it through the whole game, though there was NO WAY I tried to do it by my own exploration without Internet help. It's just too much of a torment to play the game and try to find everything or just the bare minimum to reasonably get through yourself.

Nintendo is going with quantity over quality with those new Zelda games since BOTW (at least BOTW was kinds fun cause it was new). But TOTK is just super repetitive with a boring story.

The game had about 6 years old development time and aside from few very fun new abilities (the very beginning of the game is actually pretty new, fun and refreshing) : after about 40 hours of gameplay you just don't know what to do anymore cause again : the open world is just big to be big. Nothing impressive there aside from a few charming places (like little village etc...). The open world trend is worth it when it's packed with great content like on Elden Ring ! Otherwise it's better to go with the linear approach like in previous Zelda games (Ocarina of time and Twilight princess for example). Conclusion : TOTK is fun at the beginning of the game. But then you quickly understand that you have no goal, you are going nowhere and you just do the " shrines " over and over and over and over again .... TOTK is the definition of a repetitive video game .

    Could have been much better.

Is it fun? Yeah. Is it worth it for the price? Most definitely not.

The main thing about botw that I found interesting was the exploration, but that aspect is almost entirely absent from this game, as you know the map already, which is only slightly different.
Another gripe that I have with the game is that they added a lot of quests, which all feel like chores, e.g. "go talk to this guy, go back, go back to the guy again" or "collect ten frogs". The absence of such quests is what made me like botw, but this game feels much more like a 2010's ubisoft title.

No me gustó el Breath of the Wild original cuando salió, lo encontré bastante aburrido, repetitivo, con una historia muy mediocre y un final vacio que simplemente no podía llegar a interesarme.

I like it more than BOTW but barely… it’s really the same game with a lot more content. What happened with the Zelda I know and love. Skyward Sword started the downward trend but at least the dungeons were good. for a perspective… Majoras mask > Lttp > ocarina > twilight princess. All amazing dungeons.

this games dungeons are a little atmospheric but good god they are terrible.

It's a dlc disguised as a full price game that somehow managed to ruin the botw pacing entirely, as well as providing even worse graphics/art style and a story that felt hastily thrown together from whatever scraps they had lying around from botw.
It's sad that you get the better experience from the previous iteration of a game.

Musics bland, boss design is poor and this is basically breath of the wild dlc. Inexcusable for the 6 years it took. Slow traveling and ultimately just boring. Bummed I spent 70$ for a game that looks older than Mario Galaxy.

I had high hopes for it and was brimming with excitement, especially after falling in love with BOTW. However, what I encountered was a mere replica with an excessive emphasis on farming and grinding, making it less enjoyable. While I do commend the level of freedom granted for weapon crafting and vehicles, the mechanics underlying these aspects feel remarkably cumbersome. It always seems like you're awkwardly piecing things together, and the game doesn't become engaging until you finally acquire a few batteries. Yet, the process of obtaining them is far from enjoyable, requiring three Zonaite just to obtain a single Crystallized Charge, and an astonishing 300 for a mere one-third battery upgrade. The substantial time investment in this farming aspect is simply not fun.

Furthermore, performance issues plague the entire game, which is surprising given that many reviewers appear to overlook these problems. It's evident that these issues, if present in any other game, would have garnered severe criticism. When i looked for advice online i found some players telling me to "Set TV output in the System Menu to 480p. and only play on docked mode"... I am no graphic whore by any means I swear to you but I suppose I can expect more than that in 2023, especially after they raised their prices specifically for TOTK knowing we will buy it anyway. Adding to my disappointment, the game's structure mirrors that of BOTW precisely. The novelty that once existed seems to have dissipated, likely contributing to my disenchantment. The puzzle rooms also got stale pretty quickly this time around. While I'm still intrigued by the future of the Zelda series, I earnestly hope for an innovation that delivers a completely fresh experience this time around. However, considering the overwhelming success of TOTK, I'm wary of setting my expectations too high. I realized that my score might seem harsh but ultimately the game was disappointing to me to the point where I almost dropped it before the very end so here we are!

3/10 because so much of it feels old and repetitive, like a copy/paste job from 2017's Breath of the Wild. This game would've been maybe a 9/10 had it come out 6 years ago instead of BOTW. At this point, it feels uninspired and shallow

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow I've never been this disappointed with a Zelda game even though I played every game of this franchise... This is no masterpiece this is a cheap lazy cashgrab.. Of course it's not a trash game but this at maximum deserves a 7/10 because it fails at so many places...
...missing music and dungeons (I needed 15min for each of them except the fire dungeon)...
...the new "dungeons" are so easy and with hardly any riddles it's embarassing...
...boring, repetetive and empty underground and also at times sky and lands...
...tedious farming for ingrediants and weapons...
...annoying cooking, breaking weapons, breaking master sword...
...no surprises, no awe moments, no breathtaking scenes...
...most boring lazy cringe story with least possible effort and creativity...
...complete 1/1 copy of gameparts like plateau area, plot revelation, end boss battle, ...
...Amibo icons in the MENU and everywhere...!!!!!
    ...bad ui choices interupting battles...
...no battle is worth the amount of resources lost in contrast to the loot you get...
...lies to the players faking drama when telling zelda's transformation is permanent...
...Link looks like a dumbass not telling anyone he knows what happend to Zelda since like 80h+ of playtime ago...
...makes no sense lore wise and in regards to BotW (missing divine beasts, missing sheikah, ...)
...patching master sword and duplication glitch shows Nintendo doesnt want you to have fun...
...objectively this cant even be 96.... 80% graphics, 60% music, 50% plot, 80% gameplay, freshness 60%... if this were a 96 there'd hardly be anything to criticise yet there is tons of stuff...
...no motivation to beat Ganondorf... does he even do anything remotely bad?! people live happily...
...ending could have been great but missed opportuniy with much too easy Zelda catching (also you fall in the water so without you she would have fallen in the water anyway...)
As a sky island dlc this would have been ok, a complete game with empty underground and sky islands wasn't needed... maybe liked by fanboys and kids building ***** for tiktok videos (yay game of the year!!)

Same game. A few new mechanics which are so incredibly "meh". Can't stand this washed-out "art style". Nintendo, give your devs some actual hardware, and maybe everything won't need to be stale and cell-shaded.

In my opinion there was a lot to be desired and few were met. Really really wanted to enjoy it. But this seems more like an expansion than a new game. I also felt like the tutorial/ starting area was not well laid out and I spent way too long trying to figure out how to backtrack after I went the wrong way. It’s just meh.

I ran around in Hyrule for a little bit and its just so goddamn boring that I haven't booted it in a week. I am convinced people are justifying their $70. Outside of children, I genuinely cannot understand why anyone with a decent amount of braincells would act like Tears of The Kingdom is even half as good as the RE4 remake or Hogwarts Legacy. It is an absolute joke. People are literally making penis rockets and penis cars. Its gross honestly, what theyve allowed to happen to the Zelda franchise. It is no longer Zelda.

TLDR: good for nolifers and school age teens. Everyone else, move on you will be disappointed and repelled.

I am going to start by admitting that I didn't finish the tutorial section of the game... and there is a good reason for that, I have a life with a wife, children, pets, a job and real friends and family. The tutorial appears to take 4-5 hours of very motivated and knowledgeable players. Imagine now being a regular person who just wants to enjoy a few games on the side of a very busy life. 4-5 hours turns into 4 weeks. Which turns into a waste of time and money. I cannot imagine the amount of time wasted in progressing the story given the game mechanics for a reasonable adult: we are talking of committing 100% of your free time to that piece of junk.

Now, I have played openworld games before with more than a thousand hours under my belt, but this game is not openworld (even nintendo admitted that it is the case, it wants to give the feeling of freedom but still the user is railroaded subtly to progress the story with the one inescapable ending). It's a cleverly scripted close world with a pointlessly large map used as a distraction where the user is constricted to do what is expected in a way that mimics freedom. There is no consequence to bad actions, you cannot progress the game unless you perform the actions required by the developers. It's like being railroaded: you can move sideways, up and down, as much as you want, but there's only one entrance and one exit to the room you are in. Another analogy is the game is like a series of skipping ropes: you have inescapable nodes and outside of that you can do whatever you want, it's pointless and adds nothing to the game. The tutorial, again, demonstrates perfectly the issue.

Now for the game technical aspects: visually the game is just a mess, the textures are laughable the cel shading is applied unequally and mostly, the game should not be using cel shading the way it does: particle elements, water and effectively distant background are rendered unceled whereas the character and some close environment elements are celed. Unless again you are very young, the graphic may make you sick or disoriented. It's very reminiscent of early 2000 games and cel shading is just used to hide the fact the console is outdated and the game is unoptimizable. Played on handheld mode or tv mode, the game is still incredibly hideous. Those who claim the game is beautiful are just lying to themselves. Additionally, for a game that appears to be heavily based on its predecessor, the frame drops are just inexcusable and forget choosing a more performance based rendering, it is not an option. I forgot to talk about the shadows, the time of day management, etc: this should not be in a 2023 production at this price point.

The game mechanics mix minecraft with creation and building elements from other games like fallout 4, or fortnite. What is this game? Is it a RPG, or a minecraft derivative? it's not a RPG as there is no consequences, just going onwards and upwards to save zelda. It's not adventure (you cannot avoid the minecraft elements unless you want to progress and you are railroaded subtely), it's not action (you don't have any of the basic capacities in available in current action game like rolling, straffing, etc and you must craft and use powers). You cannot remap the controls and the options listed in the menu are basically decorative. Again, it's an openworld in which you have no choice but to do what you are told otherwise you do not progress, and that is shown with the use of the powers, building, etc. The lifespan of the "weapons" is hilarious, just to show that you must craft more and grind.

Another element of this openworld, is the management of the inventory: an real openworld game would set strong limits not 20/20/14, this large limit exists for people to grind. People have been talking about creativity in this game. What does creativity mean in an action-adventure openworld game?

The control lags, control precision, camera management show this game is poorly developed. There is also no grading of difficulty, which is a strong indication this game is just made to railroad users who like to grind.

One element made me laugh: voice acting. Either use it, or don't use it the developers did not know how or when to use it. And it's hilarious. Same goes with the grunts or the "etheral music" which is not whimsical, it's here to mask the utter lack of sound stage design.

I almost forgot: if you need to watch youtube videos from nolifers to understand what to do next, this game is not well designed. Do I want to watch 5 hours of YT to know how to complete the tutorial, totaling 10 hours wasted, no thank you.

At the end, is this game good? No, it's made for a demographic who has time to waste grinding like they were working on a factory floor and who lies to themselves to justify wasting money on an early 2000 product released in 2023

The quests are uninspired and there is a lot of collect 50 of this find 50 of that just to bloate the game. The depths is extremely boring and lackluster and the sky island are almost non-existent. The four first temples are the same mechanic with a different skin, and the last tempel is some of the worst game design I have ever seen where you take all the stuff you have worked for and ignor it to ride one a robot. This hase to be the worst boss fight on Zelda history. The game is nothing more than an overpriced DLC for Breath of the wild.

The contorls are mostly locked the only thin you can change is switching the sprint and jump button but this also changes all the funktions of the buttons so everything mapped to B is now X and vice versa. The button funktionaloty isn't consistent across the game B is sprit on foot A is sprint on Horseback and X is dash in water I don't understand why they couldn't keep it the same button.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remove the Zelda name from this game and all of the nostalgia would be completely washed away and that is the only reason this game is getting such glowing reviews. Not only did Nintendo screw up the one thing that made BOTW so awesome, but they doubled down on so many things from BOTW that people hated. The storyline is pathetic outside of the first 10 minutes and the extended ending. The "all weapons have decayed" plot device makes exactly zero sense. Most of the sages are absolutely useless outside of specific combat situations, Tulin being the sole exception since he helps you glide better (with a massive recharge time, btw) and his crit shots can be super useful, especially when stunning a Frox for an unexpected easy hit or two. Some people complained about how BOTW was a largely empty world... well, that same thing still applies here, which is ironic considering how this game absolutely BURIES you in quests and pointless busywork to do basic things, like activating towers. Thankfully you don't have to climb them anymore, but I found myself rolling my eyes repeatedly when I'd come across a tower that had a blocked entrance for no good reason and I had to look around yet again for some alternative way in. That got old super fast and made lots of other things feel like a chore to get done. Bad design of one bit seeps into the design choices of other bits and spoils the experience by making it feel like a total slog.

Now... a lot of people complain about the visuals. Although I found a few really problematic areas (like the occasional mesh overlap), I didn't have much issue with how the game looked. Where flowing water turns into a waterfall looks absolutely awful, but that was the only major gripe I had with the visuals. I didn't have high expectations here, given that it's a Switch game, so that part's pretty much fine with me. Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Neutral... and ironically the only thing saving this from an even lower score.

Fusion mechanics... hoo boy. This could have been interesting. You can make some really gnarly swords and some really interesting and useful shields... but since they doubled down on the durability detail that almost everyone hated in BOTW, this got old super fast. This was the one part of the game that could have saved it but nope... epic fail.

Ultrahand is kind of interesting. Building vehicles can be rewarding, and Autobuild has a couple of pretty interesting prebuilt designs. Unfortunately, most of the designs you can find from schema stones or the Yiga are absolutely worthless, and with only 8 slots for custom designs, you will run out of spots quickly. I built a really nice cannon car that made it impossible for regular enemies to do anything about, and it was pretty funny when a Frox just nommed it. Unfortunately, the interface is extremely slow, so even this part of the game suffers from the feeling of a slog.

The economics are completely broken from BOTW. It's much harder to earn rupees, since almost everything has been downgraded in value, and starter clothing is stupid expensive until you do pointless quests... in one case, MULTIPLE pointless quests. Admittedly, finding out that Cece has a carrot addiction is funny, but that's not only an outlier plot point in the sea of extremely lame plot points, but it's also one told so many times in fiction that it just serves to say "hey where have I seen this before?". But anyway, back to economics... even the great fairies are broken in terms of economics... everything has a labor charge now? On top of forcing you do to filler quests? Just drag it out even more, why don't ya... no, just no... just take my 10k rupees and bugger off. BOTW did this part right.

Some people say that the combat is easier, some say it's harder. I say it's about the same. Enemies have new attack patterns, and Nintendo went into their back catalog and pulled old enemies from the past into this game. No one liked the Like Likes though, Nintendo... so bringing them back was dumb. I didn't expect to see Gleeoks return though. Where's the new stuff? Oh, Horriblins... whose name matches their design. Yeah, it's funny the first time to watch them bounce around on their butt, but they don't add much to the gameplay at all. When you first start the game, you are horribly outmatched, as the statistics of the enemies are pumped WAY up. Getting hit once from a regular Bokoblin can get you a Game Over. What nonsense is this? You can be one-hit KO'd from the weakest monster in Ganondorf's army. Terrible balancing issues permeate the entire game. And then we get to the final boss... wow. You thought Calamity Ganon was a pushover? This game's final fight makes Calamity Ganon feel like a legitimate challenge. Terrible, terrible balancing.

I could go on for days about how screwed up this game was and how much they completely drained all of the fun out of BOTW, but there's a character limit here. All in all, this game was an epic fail.

This game is a complete chore, grinding for material to create stuff to grind for more materials just to repeat the same thing over and over. Want to upgrade your inventory then grind, want to get new weapons then grind just bear in mind that you will break your useless weapons to get equally useless ones, of course you also have the Ubisoft towers, a staple in chore-like open world titles such as this and the Assassin's Creed franchise.

There are no dungeons, exploration is not rewarding, not only are you exploring the same map but you are doing it for pointless loot too. God I miss key items and dungeons, remember how cool it was to open that chest not knowing what you'll find inside. Remember how cool it was to go into the overworld now with the key item to open new avenues for exploring. Back then the overworld was a big puzzle itself, in this title the puzzle are contained in another grinding mechanic known as shrines.

There is no story, no epic, no lore, no side quests, no memorable characters. It's just a bunch of mechanics and gimmicks, Zelda is dead and we killed it. This game whatever you want to call, but it is not a Zelda title.

I gave away this Zelda and don't plan to buy another BoTW like title, I'm not interested in Open World Zelda, if you like grinding and gimmicky mechanics this game is for you. If you like Zelda then it isn't.

Zelda was the only game that got me into buying a Nintendo console, but I guess not anymore. You lost a fan Nintendo, it's sad to see what Zelda has become. I hope 2D titles survive and don't get destroyed too.

Ultimately though, I still feel that the structure of the game sucks. Playing the exact same Sage cutscene after every dungeon feels like a slap in the face. When you find memories scattered across the open world, they feel disjointed and didn’t really make me connect to the story that well. The new characters and Ganondorf himself felt underwhelming. The way that they completely ignore the events of Breath of the Wild as if it didn’t happen or happened a long time ago greatly annoyed me. The Depths just feel like a completely pointless addition that is only there as a way to farm Zonite ore to fuel your useless vehicles and not really find anything interesting besides Amiibo cosmetics. You will quickly get bored of exploring the Depths after 5 hours when you realize its mostly pointless with nothing to find. The final boss with Ganondorf is pretty well done, but I find it very ironic that they didn’t even force the player to use Ultrahand or any of the gimmicks to fight him and instead just felt like a standard fight where you spam flurry rush with good timing. Its almost as if the devs realized that they are just pointless gimmicks. You’re not forced to utilize any of your tools like the Hookshot or Light Arrows in previous Zeldas because they don’t exist anymore. As a Zelda fan for 30 years, this game made me depressed and lose a lot of confidence as a fan of this franchise and the gaming industry as a whole. The game sold very well and also reviewed well too. I really question what in the world are they seeing? I expect the developers to utilize the same principles in the next game because of the critical reception which makes me question if I should even stick around as a fan anymore or just quietly move on and say this series is no longer for me Expand

I appreciate the grander plot and attempts to integrate the Era of the Wilds into the wider Zelda timeline (although so far it's hard to tell if it's succeeded). I also appreciate the originality of the Depths; no prior Zelda game has been set underground and had they placed a greater focus on that, perhaps the premise being that Link is trapped underground following the opening cinematic and has to work his way back up to Hyrule, it could've been incredible. The exploration aspect on its own can still be fun and lead to some humorous or gorgeous encounters.

In saying that, it inherits all the same annoyances as BotW - tedious game mechanics, constant stuttering frame rates, convoluted button inputs and delayed responses, repetitive and (mostly) fruitless side quests, a disjointed story, weak voice acting (to be clear I blame Nintendo's lazy direction for this, not the VAs themselves). But on top of all of BotW's half-baked assets, chucking in a souless Skyloft 2.0 and the under-utilised Depths makes TotK feel even more spread-too-thin than its predecessor.

As well as making the Depths more of a focus, I believe that making Zelda's moments playable would've really elevated this game. Spirit Tracks is the only Zelda game to date to have the player control Zelda, and I think a second one is long overdue. The context of THIS Zelda's journey in particular would've made for a brilliant way of keeping BotW's map while doing something SIGNIFICANTLY fresh with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A mediocre expansion of botw.
I will start by saying botw was also not a 10/10 game by any means.I olayed it for 150 hours and after the first 25 it felt the whole game was on a loop.
Every negative i will list here is present in both games.Makes sense since they used the exact same assets making TOKT.So here we go :
1.Behind everything theres a korok.900 in one 1000 in the other. Its so discouraging knowing the bad reward before you do anything.
2.Shrines interior is the same and you got 120 of them in botw and 150 in totk.Again repetitiveness on its finest.
3.Map besides shrines and koroks basically only has bokolin camps with sometimes no reward at all.
4.Cooking is tedious and boring.Btw you still cant have quick items. If you need to heal during battle you have to pause enter menu chose food and chose to eat it….
5.Towns dont offer much content and there are 1-2 worthy side quests.
6.Weapons brake and you lose interest fast.Fuze is a pain. You need 7 moves to fuze two owned weapons:open menu , pick weapon , throw it , pick ability fuze , open weapon menu chose weapon , chose fuze…
7.Divine beasts like the rest of the game is on repeat. They all are the same , same as the new “dungeons“ 8.Battle is poor and uninteresting.

Critics and fans never talked about these of course and they still dont. How can such a terribly repetitive game be a 10 ? Well its a zelda thats how.

Totk is an even worse position since its the exact same game with some add ons.It basically a meme game now where you minecraft structures and post videos of goofing around. Theres no game out there with such map but empty of meaningful things to do.The map is empty of any essence.
I would rate this a 7 for the sake of some new players that experience it for the first time.BUT giver the many suspicious 10s it gets to counterbalance them its a 0.

BOTW is the greatest game ever made. Every village, every side quest, every unexpected twist and turn was a delight: an incredible voyage of discovery, and those discoveries were thrilling. Where as some weapons actually take on a new look when combined, other quiite simply have said item stick out, looking like an eye sore.
You would expect so much better from the Zelda franchise, it certanly made legendary games before, this just feels like a last cash grab before they let go of the brand and moves on.
It could have been a great game, even though this new format is not my cup of tea, but i cant fathom how little have been done during 6 years in development, when you have free mods for games like skyrim, made up by a small team of ~5 individuals which remodels and change the basegame to a bigger degree than this changed the original BOTW, it feels like a fan made mod, and it does not justify its price tag.
There is ofcourse some fun to be had playing, but it bores too soon, and for the price its a rip-off

There is one problem that really bothered me with the game, and then there's one devastating problem I have with this overrated piece of crap game. The problem I have is it's boring. It just wasn't fun to me with the short time I played. I've finished every Zelda game but could only play 2 hours of this, not because of the boredom, but because of the devastating problem I had with the game. The building mechanic controls of the game are so bad. Horrible even. They aren't fluid and feel so unnatural to use. And you use these controls so much that I found the game unplayable. Not to mention the crap you build never seem to work right. It's a mess for me. I gave this game a zero because it's a 70 dollar game, and with all the hype it received??? I honestly lost interest after ragu told me to do two more shrines.

    >weapon durability works the same way

    >The gerudo dancer outfit now says "meme worthy costume" in it's description

    >The construction feature of the game will autodetect if you are making a swastika

    >no playable Zelda

    >There's references to shriek and how "he" transcends the idea of gender

They don't outright call her a tranzy but the intention is pretty visible

    >There are only 4 dungeons (+ hyrule castle, SAME hyrule castle map)

    >Its the same area you can see in the trailer with Sidon!

    >There's a souvenir that depicts an earth globe but it's called "the universal fun balloon" which is a reference to the company making the Nintendo theme park at Orlando.

    >Zelda turns into a dragon after link has been killed off screen so she has to step in and access the secret power she had all along and save the day because the hero has nothing on a princess of wisdom (this is a exact line from the dub)

    Overall an unmitigated disaster.

then there's the NPC's that transform into mega annoying enemies that don't give you much useful stuff. what does that teach me nintendo? it teaches me that I get punished for talking to NPC's, so naturally, I don't feel safe to talk to NPC's any more. genius move.
Oh yes, then there is the GODDAMN GATHCA MACHINE, which has me wasting the resources I collected, just to try and get one of each item, I don't play games for gambling mechanics, this is reprehensible.
The amazing stuff you can make, disappears if you walk too far from it, some of them even disappear midway through using them.
If you want to ride a horse to travel faster, you can't use fast travel because the horse can't fast travel, except that is, if you go to a stable, where it can then be teleported from one stable to another... there is no logic to this.
I go to trouble of exploring, to see if I find something interesting, and what's my reward? another bloody shrine, where i can solve a puzzle to get a light orb, to go to a statue, to choose either heart or stamina.... another convulted bit of BUSYWORK, rather than actually finding tangible things in the world like heart pieces.

This game is the disappointment of the year. I got it for free to test it and following all the hype I expected something great but what I ultimately got was nothing more than bad.

There are some positives; the game looks nice and the environments have a nice vibe to them. Furthermore, exploration is fun and the combination mechanisms are innovative and have a lot of potential. The allow for some really creative approach but are restricted by the clunky controls quite a bit (see next part for more on this). Too often a valuable building part falls down into the void and is gone until the game is restarted. That's not too bad though because it gives a sense of caution.

The music is decent and sound effects fit the ambiance well but neither are something special. Voice acting is well done for the few spoken lines there are, but again, Link doesn't respond verbally to anyone.

If that was everything about this game, it'd probably get a 7 or 8 score but the combat and the controls is what's the real catastrophe. They're just bad, really bad.
First and foremost, who'd though putting the "run button" on th topmost button was a good idea. Not only does it hurt my hands but it also blocks access of the other face buttons. It's also so unintuitive, as other similar games have the run command on the downmost button, a shoulder button or the right analog stick.

Even worse is the combat itself. While it doesn't help that everything breaks on you in the almost worst possible moment, switching weapons and gear is a chore in how the buttons are configured. That's as unintuitive as running. I'd rather open a menu and scroll through it then pressing two buttons while trying to choose the right weapon with a third one.

Finally, the biggest no-go for an action-orientated game the complete absence of an "evade button". You can block attacks with a shield, but if you don't have one you're screwed. Because there is no dedicated evade method you have to run to not get hit, using that stupid button layout, while also trying to get closer to attack. That results in getting hit by enemy attacks a lot, because they have a god-like precision and many hit like a truck, even with a literal pebble causing you to have to deal with even more unintuitive menus to access healing items.

    Conclusion:
I can't recommend anyone to play this game at all because combat and controls are abysmal. Even the most difficult Souls-likes have much better gameplay and are more enjoyable despite their difficulty.

The story is very bland, and while the few dungeon areas and bosses are much better than BOTW, they are a tiny part of the game, and trivial to solve//beat.

Building things is fun for a few minutes, then you realize you have to remake them whenever you go anywhere like inside of a shrine, and it is way faster to run or glide. The battery power makes any machines essentially useless for anything other than novelty, if you want to actually use a contraption you need to spend a LOT of time grinding to upgrade your batteries, you will not get a reasonable amount of power just by playing or progressing through the story.

Overall this game is like a BOTW + mod, it adds some things, and some of them are interesting, the gameplay is still the same and pretty solid, but it feels like the same game all over again. The rewards are things you already had in the last game, only a few people remember you, and nothing is nearly as exciting to explore as you have already been there in BOTW.

This game is not bad, it is fun and enjoyable to play, however it is extraordinarily disappointing if you have played through Breath of the Wild.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Update: After 105 hours, finished the game. The depths are an afterthought, you just need to do enough there to gain batteries and complete a couple of quests and the rest is pointless. The story is also an afterthought: let's be clear, there is no path to the story which can be summed up as: intro cinematics, getting your companions, expanding your stash and unlocking regions, defeating bad guy, end cinematics *** credits *** more end cinematics. The number of main quests is actually extremely small, and the number of side quests is actually mostly fillers, barely more. The game is made to make you grind and watch the load screen to get a couple of items to be strong enough to defeat the bad guy at the end. Many times in the quest there are either issues with translations, or plain logic. As mentioned it's not a true open world as there is no story progression through your exploration of the map. FPS drop throughout the game is truly unbearable and the hindrance of your companions is also unbelievable annoying. It is said that repetition is the key to comedy, well this game is the plain demonstration: what a joke.

Update: played the game for 60+ hours, it’s empty, grindy, and repetitive to give a semblance of depth to this game. It’s a very empty and soul-less game. The stuttering and fps drop is really annoying, same as the cut scenes (if you’ve seen the cutscene for a shrine once, twice or three times, you just end up mashing the controller’s buttons). Thank god there are duplication bugs to help getting food and coins rapidly, because this game is worst than a chore. It’s bad enough that I start to root for the antagonist… it’s really not an action or rpg game, barely a Minecraft clone with unnecessarily idiotic puzzles).

I don't get the hype: the game is ugly, stutters, lags (controler or joycon response is... slow), and the world is empty with inconsistent use of voice acting.

Game mechanics are incredibly poor (doing a simple 360 takes 4 seconds, looking around to 'solve' the puzzles is equally enragingly long), no possibility to tune any game parameter or remap anything, it's worse than a PC game designed in the early 2000 and it's not refreshing to see pixelated shadows.

The use of some kind of cell shading to mask the low capacity of the console as well as using supersaturated textures with a mix low polygon models with high quality particles makes the game appear even weirder.

I've tried playing this game but every 5 minutes I quit since it's really just not that good and it's not even trying to be good nor modern in any sense of the term: it's like playing a game of watching the paint dry using one hand and wondering why this kind of stupid controller setup is.

I get it, people like to play games that basically play themselves, do not require any kind of character development, skills, or involvements so they just enjoy watching pretty colors playing in front of their eyes but I think there is a limit to that kind of mindlessness. Even games like the sims 1 have more depth!

Another theory for those justifying the time it takes to pass the "tutorial" section is the sunk cost fallacy: a self justification not to face the fact they wasted money and time. As such they need to self justify, and justify to the eyes of others, having wasted their time.

Interesting fact, just checked and most of the new 10/10 scores are from users with zero other rating or review. In this case, I'd look at the 4000+ positive reviews as being highly suspicious. Maybe 10% of genuine positive and the rest being bots or paid fake accounts.

After the tutorial area/island... the game felt very bland to me. Quite bummed out about it. ;(

Boss fights range from a fun puzzle to a horrendous showcase of the abysmal combat - the final boss is an especially poor showing of this.

I found the shrines by far the most enjoyable part of the game finding them to be enjoyable physics puzzles. The building system is also ok, feels very much like Gmod.

Over all it's a fun puzzle game with a terrible open world and poor combat system bolted on.

o jogo é muito bom, mas não ter legenda em português do Brasil é ridículo

The game's story and objective feel very disconnected from the vast amount of new content.

Playing older Zelda games, I had the felling that every new unlocked item would open new puzzle opportunities for relevant content or some side quest that would give me a relevant item. The ultrahand power is a very cool feature, but its nature of allowing you to build almost anything in anyway

Playing older Zelda games, I had the felling that every new unlocked item would open new puzzle opportunities for relevant content or some side quest that would give me a relevant item.

The ultrahand power is a very cool feature, but its nature of allowing you to build almost anything in anyway means that the puzzles can't have hard, well thought, specific solutions. You are open to solve it your own way, and so the puzzles to go from point A to point B end up being ridiculous easy (and sometimes not even needing the ultrahand power). Solving challenges with relevant items like the hookshot, iron boots, zora's armor is what was fun in Zelda and enabled the opportunity to have well designed puzzles, dungeons and items.

The fuse power is a step in the right direction, but hasn't been used to its full potential. Allowing new utilities to your items based on what you hunt or find is really cool and I used a lot. There are many fusions with a really cool effect to explore. In relation to weapons I still prefer just using an unbreakable master sword than having other 10 breakable items, but giving them the right fusion can help in many different and smart ways.

The enormous amount of content and collectibles doesn't help either. It's really annoying to keep changing outfits just to climb or swim or glide. Also selecting items for fuse operations is a pain. I know some people like the appearance customization, but the old green tunic with upgrades along the game is what I would go for. Continuously pausing your game to find X outfit or Y item to fuse breaks the game flow and fun.

The chasm gets repetitive really fast. Running in the dark to find light to explore what you have just passed in a map the same size as Hyrule is not fun at all. It's also filled with nostalgic items that looks like a hard try to catch old Zelda fans emotions and ride the past games successes.

In OoT we had child link, adult link, the ocarina... in MM we had unique mask powers... in WW we had the boat... In TP, twilight helm and wolf link... BoTW we had open world exploration and survivorship... I just feel that TotK doesn't have something memorable... maybe Zonai devices and the ultrahand system?

My final feeling is that the quantity of content has increased and the quality of the content has decreased. It's a good game, one of the best main story line in all the Zelda games and an improvement from BoTW. But everything else just feels disconnected, the feeling of progression when you make a new discovery or solve a new puzzle is replaced by grinding useless collectables and rushing through easy puzzles. After 6 years of waiting, I wouldn't recommend at current price.

I would give it a 6, but there are so many 10s that I feel I need to balance.

General game loop is okay, heavily resembles BotW. A bit more content should be expected from a game company as massive as Nintendo in my opinion, especially if it's supposed to be a new experience. It did not feel like a new experience from BotW, and definitely did not feel like 6 years of game development went into it.

It did not feel like a new experience from BotW, and definitely did not feel like 6 years of game development went into it.
There's hardly any new art in the game. It's mostly reusing old assets from the previous game in all aspects - from the environment to enemies. Most people are sold on the game being expanded upon greatly by the sky islands and the depths. A lot of these places use just a handful of modular assets, there is no true crafting of these structures by an artist. At this point they could've laid off the art team and would have delivered the same experience just about. I'm personally a game developer, and I can sniff out corner cutting a mile away. People say that the depths doubled the game's size. That's true in the literal sense, however I'm willing to bet money that this was generated off of an inverted height map from the hyrule surface, which takes zero time to do. Then was populated by the same few foliage assets, and a select few locations in there were hand-picked for some TLC in an attempt to try to make it seem like somebody cared for creating it. Generating an environment and foliage does not take too long, but the standard player probably won't notice and will still be impressed by the 'doubled-sized' game.

    Abilities:
Ultrahand: This was fun, overall I enjoyed the freedom to create things to help move around or attack enemies. It's the one thing that held the game's score up for me.
Ascend: This was convenient, but overall did not add any ground-breaking aspects to the game to really change how the game felt compared to BotW.
Recall: Objects did the thing they just did, but in reverse. Not necessarily something that sets this game above anything else.
Fuse: I find it lackluster. I see no difference in combat really compared to BotW. I still whack enemies to death, or whack boulders that are in my way with other boulders (on a stick). And when it comes to fuse+arrows, it's neat that items in your inventory have more of a use, however it's inconvenient to sift through all your items for the same 3 or 4 items you'll use. Even if you sort it, it doesn't make combat truly feel any different.
Autobuild: Good for my air bike, glad I didn't have to recraft it over and over again manually.

    Performance:
I'll give credit where it's due, mostly consistent 30 fps on a switch with a lot of these systems working is impressive, however come on Nintendo, we need a new device that's not stuck in the past. It's good that after creating BotW and forking off somewhere into development and overhauling for TotK, it managed to stay optimized for the most part. From what I saw BOTW started serious development back in 2013, so after 10 years total on a project (TotK IS forked from BotW and nobody can convince me otherwise), there was plenty of time to allocate to these optimizations. I just wish more time was spent in other areas though to make it feel like a new game.

    Story:
I won't spoil anything, but honestly not much would be spoiled. It's a Nintendo game. They're more known for solving puzzles versus creating a truly compelling story. I'm finished with my playthru of the game and I did a lot of side-quests, I'm convinced that I'll forget most of it by the end of next month, it's nothing to rave about.

    In the end:
General gameplay loop is alright, more or less the same as BotW which isn't bad necessarily. After playing through the predecessor and coming to this, I feel like it was not worth $70 though. It was the same game packaged again and everybody ate it up because it was hailed as the next Zelda game. If I didn't play BotW and if I didn't have my game developer background maybe I would have enjoyed this more. I can just see all the corners that were cut during gameplay, and it feels insulting to be a consumer of this. Not worth $70, not indicative of 6 years of work, 4/10. Congratulations, you implemented 1 cool feature with ultrahand and things are slightly more optimized.
I'm not going to just give a pass for huge companies that choose to cheat out the consumer.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
