My fears coming into this game were proven correct, not enough new content and runs horribly on switch, not worth the steep $70 price-tag. Save your money and just replay BOTW instead.

It is a way to expensive DLC with new and terrible mechanics. I really liked the first or main game. This is a disapointment.

Tears of the kingdom, more like tear in my eyes when I play this... Gottem (True though, its not a very fun game, it is quite boring and the game has terrible framerate 3/4 of the time felt the game was empty alot of the time despite open world and the puzzles were mediocre at best. I miss the old Zelda games when they were actually fun to play)

It's botw with some slight extras

Nintendo continues to be a detriment to there own games with there stubbornness and fascination with sticking with there overpriced, underpowered hardware, totk suffers from being a PS3 gen game in a current gen world. 720p and 20fps is unacceptable for a $70 2023 tittle. Nintendo didn't have to create a new engine, and the world was already mostly built from botw. I'm not even going to mention the stupid high price of 70 bucks and piss poor performance and graphic fidelity. Game looks like Wii one or Cube is disrespectful to studios that strive to make games really awesome, they took the easy way out to do the same, no real innovation just fan service. Someone should demand that Nintendo sacrifice a little more out of respect for technological advances, 60fps 4K, games with current techniques, not hackneyed formulas.

6 years to copy and paste BOTW. Oh my God, Nintendo just destroyed my illusions.

The first 2 hours of the game are exactly the same as BOTW. But THE SAME! Same story, same steps (even the snow part and the tedious cooking). Hyrule is, again, the same map. So it changes from "I'm going to enjoy discovering the map of Hyrule" to "Oh my god, again the same map and this tedious towers

The weapons. In BOTW there vere some very nice weapons. Here you have to craft very stupid weapons with rocks and other things. They ruined the weapons scheme.

I've been playing for 10 hours and I don't know if I wanna play more just to walk for hours in the same scenarios, mountains and lakes.

Finally, the switch. This game should have been launched with a new Switch. Simply the console is too old to decently run TOTK.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 720p 20fps Are you kidding me?

The game I was so eagerly anticipating turned out to be a major letdown due to its poor optimization. Despite my excitement and high hopes, the game's lowly 720p resolution and stuttering 20 frames per second left me feeling extremely angry and frustrated.

I was constantly plagued by lag spikes, choppy animations, and sluggish controls, which made even basic gameplay actions feel like a chore. Every time I tried to immerse myself in the game's world, I was pulled back to reality by the constant interruptions and slowdowns.

It was especially infuriating to know that these issues could have been easily avoided with better optimization. It was clear that the developers had neglected this aspect of the game in favor of flashy graphics and other superficial features. They had failed to prioritize the smooth and enjoyable gameplay experience that gamers like me crave.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of betrayal and disappointment as I played through the game. All my excitement and anticipation had been for nothing, and I was left with a subpar gaming experience that barely resembled what I had been promised.

As I navigated through the poorly optimized world, I couldn't help but wonder how much better the game could have been if the developers had put in more effort. It was clear that they had squandered a great opportunity to create something truly special, instead settling for a half-baked product that was barely functional.

All in all, the game's poor optimization left me feeling incredibly angry and let down. It's a shame that such a promising title was ruined by such a simple and avoidable flaw. Until the developers can address these issues and deliver the polished, optimized experience that gamers like me demand, I won't be wasting any more of my time or money on their games.

The game suffers from every Breath of the wild 's flaws, that were criticized LONG after the game was out to avoid being in trouble with nintendo, this game suffers the same barrage of fanboyism on day one, but little by little everyone that has played enough of this game see what everyone with a sound mind see :

The same boring map as Botw, you rediscover absolutely nothing, it is even boring to have to redo all the same map, they couldn't think of any new mechanics too forcing you to accomplish 120 shrines on the main map and 32 in the sky. Not to even talk of the reused korok system . what is even more outrageous is the divine beast tier easy 5 sages dungeons. Not a single one was difficult, at all, the ambiance of BOTW was darker and felt like there was also much more at stake then this disney ified, cheap "sequel", the issue here is to sell this as a new game, it is not, it reuses 90% of all the known assets, animations, ennemies, there is maybe only 4 new ennemies in the whole game. one of them crawl on the roof of caves, one of them is a tree, another one is a pool of bloody hands trying to catch you, and the last one is a 3 headed dragon, THAT's IT !!! the rest of the game has every same reused ennemies from botw.

Even memories storytelling system is as janky and badly managed as BOTW with 11 tears, so, 11 memories to find and you can find them, again, one of the biggest flaws of BOTW repeated the exact same way, in an anachronous, desynched manner, forcing you to rewatch all of them in a chronological order because we didn't feel like guiding the game with quests that make sense story telling wise at nintendo, profiting from the nature of the open world to get lazy AGAIN.

There is also a lot of cut content from the trailers we saw, and they will obviously be made into dlc's, when we saw link in a special environment on the back of a huge animal, that is nowhere to be find in the current game, if you release a trailer for the game and cut content that was advertised as is before launch, i call it false advertisement. The trailer also gave the promise of a darker, more interesting game then botw dungeon wise, and nintendo saying the dungeons will not be divine beast like but have more of a regional feel to them and not do the same thing again. Guess what... These dungeons are as bad and as SHORT and easy as divine beast, even a toddler can finish one in under 20 minutes, and the bosses are way way way too easy too. leaving absolutely not much of a memorable moment , any taste in the mouth as they are done way too fast and give you absolutely no challenge.

Great Sky Island was beautiful and colorful and felt fresh until it slowly starts to creep in, as you progress in the game, that barring a few changes this is the EXACT SAME GAME.

    Zelda is absent.

The story is told through memories.

The Calamity is now called The Upheaval.

Weapon durability still exists, but worse all the weapons have decayed so you have to glue goofy **** to them so you can hit something more than six times.

All the Sheikah slate abilities are swapped for different but equivalent Zonai abilities.

    Complete shrines to get orbs.

Collect 4 orbs to upgrade health/stamina.

They're so similar Nintendo could have released them at the same time like Pokémon Games do. Instead of Pokémon Red or Blue you would have Legend of Zelda: Breath or Tears. Do you want crafting mechanics? Pick Tears. Or do you want action mechanics? Pick Breath. The differences outside of that are minimal and superficial.

I just can't believe I paid $90+ CAD when I could have just kept playing Breath of the Wild. I thought this would be the safest game to pre-order of all time, after how great BOTW was. And yet having been burned a few times in the past by pre-ordering, I somehow got burned again.

The story is hollow and pointless and the NPC and side quests are all boring. The game is not really a The Legend of Zelda game but an indie sandbox game like Breath of the Wild but with more sandbox elements like fusion, limited and boring vehicle building and so on. The "dungeons" that are mentioned by the critics that say that this game is a masterpiece are even worse than in the prequel. The music is still minimal and also recycled and the graphics are ever worse with worse performance. Gameplay is boring and frustrating and story is bare-bones. Let's be real, what would the score be if this game wasn't made by Nintendo and the critics were impartial and professional? Tears of the Kingdom is shamelessly overrated just like Breath of the Wild. I am a Zelda fan and these two games aren't what I consider Zelda games and are not masterpieces either. The first issue is immediately obvious: the game is hideous, in fact it looks worse than Wind Waker and yet never goes above 20fps (with frequent spikes in the single digits). Not that the "graphics" are the only issue, the art direction might be the worst I've seen in a Nintento title to date, second only to BotW. Second is the absolutely terrible story that is a slap in the face of any self-respecting LoZ fan. I won't spoil what happens but I was gobsmacked at the contempt the writers are showing for their fans (who will probably happily take it and beg for more, as is the nature of Nintento fans). Third is the gameplay: hilarious to see the same people who (rightly) criticize Ubisoft and EA's boring "open world" make-work trash celebrate BoTW and TotK, games that are even more bland and tedious and in fact go out of their way to be as dull and repetitive as possible. And finally: if you aren't going to let me play as Zelda then don't put her in the title of your game, to do otherwise is deceptive advertising which, by the way, is illegal. Expand

And no, I’m not pulling that out of a hat: the creators of BOTW have admitted they wanted to make a game like Skyrim in the Zelda universe.

Look, it’s fun at times, but why play TOTK instead of Skyrim or Minecraft (both of which are on the Switch and regularly go on sale—which TOTK will certainly not do for the next several years)? They do it better, take less time, and they’re 1/3 of TOTK’s asking price. For me to try Zelda again, it’s gotta do something different. Otherwise Elder Scrolls 6 is getting my money—I can already safely project it’ll be a game that will look better than all of the BOTW successors of the next two decades AND it will be more immersive AND it will cost the same. Plus, I’ll get a head start on how Zelda’s gonna play for the next 15 years ;) From these reviews, I get the sense that fans want Zelda to go stand in the Elder Scroll’s shadow for the rest of time. It’s one thing to like a game, it’s another thing to naively claim something revolutionized the gaming world (aka “this is a masterpiece!”) when it most definitely did not. TOTK’s changes were solely influenced by a) Skyrim and b) Minecraft and c) what it did in BOTW. Those are the masterpieces. The games that other games try to replicate for sales. And not one of those three are “perfect” or “without flaw”.

And then, for those who want to read it, the *optional* review rant :)

I don’t want blind enthusiasm to give a false impression of where the series should go ie convince somebody who is unsure whether or not they will like the game to buy it. Hard for me to take the “perfect” game score seriously when reviewers are clearly turning a blind eye to the game’s flaws. I’m glad you like it, but a false GOTY forecast masterpiece of perfection is misleading. The consequence of convincing people on the fence to buy the game gives Nintendo, who needs little coaxing in this regard, reason to just sit on an imperfect formula. Small improvements on a formula are still based on an original game design. There’s a lot of “not fun” parts about this game I don’t want to see again. Many of those existed in BOTW and I was devastated when they returned. If it’s a direction you’re happy with the series taking, and want to actively push for it, then you should be able to acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly and still say it’s your favorite game and help people feel comfortable trying it, without making them feel bad if they don’t. Sure, it really can be flawless and perfect, but that’s for your own personal experience, not the experience of the person who’s trying to decide whether or not the game is a good fit for them. I wish I could believe in a perfect game—but there is no perfect game in my book (there’s nothing wrong with rating a 10; my issue is with all of the reviews I have read belligerently insisting that TOTK is flawless and that nobody should dare dislike the game). Not even close. But I digress.

If you find doing that over and over again to solve identical problems tedious, you will have a bad time. I personally find it irritating when the game constantly gives me obstacles like a wide chasm with prosaic building blocks on the side. It's like developers are more worried about their mechanic not being used enough than my immersion and flow. BotW was never THIS heavy-handed and prescriptive.

The story offers nothing of substance. Most of the time you are running around meeting old characters in new places on the map to get random quests. Even if you are curious of "what happened to that spot I liked", you will probably only find a Yiga hideout there for no reason. 90% of cinematics is Link staring at his hand or sword, even as something horrible is happening/just happened to his friend (Zelda). In BoTW almost every major character had a little character ark - Zelda (with self-doubt), Link (opening up), Rivali (pride), Sidon (grief), Mipha (unrequited love), Yunobo (courage), Paya (being assertive), etc, etc. Many characters had real flaws. I've watched streamers finish TotK, and it's as shallow as a bird bath. Most characters are content, all struggles come from facing an external enemy, everyone is dedicated to Link from the start so there is no tension in him winning them over, or when duty calls them. No relationships get meaningful developments, in fact it feels like friendships and love regressed from the first game.

To sum it up, Tears of the Kingdom is a huge time sink with massive copy-pasted areas and repetitive tasks, reskinned core elements, a few new mechanics that many will find tedious, and no interest for character development or telling a powerful story. I wish I could get a refund.

Is it marketing and hype or just reviews from gamers who have no idea what the Zelda names means? In all fairness, if this game was called Adventure Island instead, it would be a hit. However, Nintendo opted to go with the franchise name, Zelda. How is this a Zelda game? There is no tri-force, no dungeons that store special items that help progress the adventure. Heck, where is the adventure at all honestly? You will find yourself walking around an empty world absent of color or life while you cook random things and fuse random objects together like this was an incredible machine. You will be swinging tree branches or shoot arrows with items that break after a few uses. Constantly fighting camera angles and wondering to yourself, what am I doing and why? Better than Breath of the Wild - Yes. A true successor to the Zelda Franchise - Not even close. Nintendo could of make this the most amazing Zelda adventure to date with their open world, but fell flat on their face. Maybe they assume gamers today are not capable of going on adventures where you must locate hidden dungeons that hold secrets, maybe they do need huge stars on minimaps that say GO HERE. None the less, for those who do enjoy cooking and fusing stuff together, fighting the same 8 monsters, defeating shrine after mindless shrine or just like to play games with no failure, then go for it, you will like it. However, for those older fans who remember what Zelda really stood for and the epic adventures that came before us, do not waste your time or money. I'd like to say Nintendo will get it right eventually, but lets be honest, they are done. We will never see another great Zelda game, so lets just hope they port Windwaker over to Switch sometime soon. RIP Zelda. Expand

it's a kids' game. if you're older than 8, it'll annoy you constantly with how much it explains everything and how each character repeats dialogue even within the same conversation. it makes finding things too easy, imo, with stuff like the sensor that tells you where nearby shrines or other things are (more clearly than it did in BotW). the characters are typical one-note Nintendo characters and the story is very simplistic and is stuffed to the brim with Nintendo's classic conservative authoritarian propaganda - "defend the monarchy, praise the gods, restore the status quo. hierarchy is good. just have faith and play your part, and you'll be rewarded." - i'm annoyed by how much it constantly feels like an after school special trying to teach kids the virtues of eating vegetables, obeying adults, and doing chores. etc. and the constant puns are excruciating. everything related to writing (story, messages, characters, dialogue) sucks. there's some frustrating controls, especially on horseback, and related to building things. and the game doesn't do anything new. it's BotW again.

but, if you enjoyed the first one, this is more of it. the mechanics can be fun, there's lots to explore, and it's very pretty.

While young, it immersed me in a sense of adventure and whimsy I hadn’t experienced. Nintendo built on that formula for decades with varying degrees of success and despite initial criticisms (ie, Majora’s Mask and Windwaker). But Nintendo gambled and ultimately prevailed.

Not so here. Here, corporate profit was the only driver.

I’ve invested a number of hours into TOTK at this point, and I intend to play as close to completion as I can (perhaps out of habit or spite), but absent a drastic change in the gameplay, this game is a shadow of Breath of the Wild at best. Not only is the world literally the same, but the side quests are highly similar and the fundamental game mechanics are identical. More distressing is the continuing detachment of the story from the gameplay. While it might be vogue these days for games like Elden Ring to pursue a largely plotless story line, what has always given Zelda a leg up is the immersion of its players in its history, plot and outcome. TOTK perpetuates the increasing blandness of Hyrule both from the lack of impending doom brought by Ganon but also by the sheer number of pointless side quests (never mind the failure of Nintendo to invent new non-traditional Zelda plots).

I’ll close with this: I remember waiting at a Toys R Us when OoT was released to get a copy of the gold cartridge, and I bought a Nintendo Switch precisely so I could play BOTW. No more. Until Nintendo rejects the corporatist pattern of rehashing old IP and reembraces its commitment to develop Hyrule, its lore and the essence of what makes Zelda Zelda, I’ll be holding off on future purchases of both Nintendo systems and Zelda games. I refuse to contribute to the mediocritization of one of gaming’s most cherished franchises.

Have you ever bought a painting that resembles EXACTLY the same one that you may have bought 6 years prior? With just a different set of colours? Well, apparently, far too many people did it this year.
Same story, same setting, same gameplay. Try to compare the 1st minute of gameplay of BOTW and TOTK starting from the *spoilers* Room of Awakening.
Simply put, payed for nothing. The tiny little issues that were present in the prequel, evolved into stupidity, without being too honest. And on top of that, there is of course new stupidity, once more, without being too honest.

There is no way it would've scored higher than a 75 average. This game would be crucified by critics for low-budget graphics, poor draw distance, bad lip syncing, low unstable FPS and lack of innovation. Gamers would be roasting it by calling it a PS2 game. And then these game journalists have the audacity to rant and virtue signal over studios crunching, even though they are the main reason why crunch even exists in the first place, because every studio has to work at least 100 times harder than Nintendo to get a 90 overall Metacritic score. Playstation Studios had to crunch hard to become a critic darling with those graphics and over-produced cutscenes, but Zelda devs can make copy/paste shovelware and get treated like the Messiahs of gaming. I don't even want to hear about the Switch being underpowered. They are charging a premium next-gen price of $70, so I expect the same level of quality as PS5 and XSX. Not my fault these greedy cheapskates at Nintendo refuse to release next-gen hardware. There are hundreds, or maybe even thousands of indie games with higher quality than this trash for a cheaper price, yet get much lower scores from critics.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to touch this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. Nintendo, you can make all the indie quality games you want. But when I get a $70 game with no guaranteed online multiplayer, that is where I absolutely draw the line. How dare you give me half of the game for $70. I might've actually had fun if it had online. That's the least they could do after increasing the price for this low budget game. It's funny when Zelda fans make fun of COD for being the same game every year. At least there are new maps and graphics every year, while Zelda is the same map and graphics in 6 years. It's mind boggling that this game gets universal acclaim for indie quality at $70, when others work much harder and get panned by critics and gamers. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support laziness.

TOTK is a total asset flip of BOTW. Now add a super clumsy building/crafting mechanic, remove the life of the original world, and insert a weak story- thats what this game is. I do not recommend this game. Complete waste of time and money. If you haven't played BOTW, go play it and ignore that this game ever existed.

Not a Zelda game anymore but a sandbox game. Never in a million years would I imagine a zelda game where I rotate objects and stick them together like minecraft and its even worse controlling it with a controller. I miss the old Zelda.

Overrated Sequel. It's just BOTW with some minor additions. And why are breakable weapons still a thing in this game?

Other good open world games let’s you actually choose your own experience this way, in this game it usually just means that you can skip parts of the game. Fun…

There is no loot in this game just like the previous game. Why would I care about this new cool weapon if it’s going to break very soon. If I have a full weapon inventory I’m not going to bother opening the chest and see if the weapon inside it is stronger than what I currently have since it does not really matter. What matters is how many weapons you have not how strong it is since it will break during combat. Why not have fewer weapons but make sure that they actually matters and feel distinct from each other. That way I’ll actually care about what I find. This does though match the rest of the game very well in that sense that it prioritizes quantity over quality. Skip this one

This game is a huge steaming pile of garbage. The greedy developers are charging $70 for a mobile game. It doesn't even have the AAA quality to justify the $70 price tag. Just when I thought Nintendo has done the greediest thing imaginable, something even greedier comes up. They are charging a $70 next-gen price for a game that isn't even on a next-gen console. Just when I thought Nintendo has done the greediest thing imaginable, something even greedier comes up. They are charging a $70 next-gen price for a game that isn't even on a next-gen console. Are you freaking kidding me? This game can barely runs at 30fps 720p and dips to 20fps in combat. When I pay $70, I expect a performance and fidelity mode. The graphics are a joke. This whole cel shading stuff is just an excuse for developers to be cheap and lazy. The textures are pukeworthy. The physics are beyond horrible. The combat is boring and repetitive. The story is terrible. Cringeworthy running animations. It's the exact same game as the last, even the map is the freaking same. It's just new missions, cutscenes and attaching things. It's literally $70 DLC. When it comes to voice acting, Nintendo are extremely cheap. $70 only to get "oh ah uh hmm" voice acting during in-game dialogue. That's pathetic. Lack of enemy variety and laughable boss fights.

There is nothing to do in the open world. It's just a boring empty landscape of plants, trees, rocks, water and mountains. It's the same map as BOTW. All the lazy developers did was edit the map a bit with the creator tools and called it a day. And no, the map under the world and the sky islands don't count as new maps. GTA 5 Online has gotten new places under the map through updates and players can create sky maps with the Content Creator, so that makes it a different map, right? Wrong, it's still the same map. Not to mention the sky islands in TOTK are copied and pasted. It's embarrassing that a smaller studio like Coffee Stain North can give me a new map for Goat Sim 3 at $30, while TOTK is the same map with worse FPS and graphics for $70. Speaking of which, you can now build cars like you can in a Goat Sim 3 quest, but the cars are much slower. Maybe if they went fast enough, I might've had fun doing stunts off the empty boring mountains. Obviously the developers made it slow so it wouldn't expose a framerate nightmare. When I axed a tree, it shattered like glass and magically went under the ground.

The fact that this low-budget rehased garbage got a 96 proves there are double standards and hypocrisy among these critics. Let's all be honest with ourselves. Forget the PS5/XSX and $70 price tag, If this were just a PS4/X1 game for $60 without the Legend of Zelda title, the narrative would've been so different.

Zonai technology isn't available enough, so i end up walking around for hours trying to find a control stick so i can actually build something. There are a heap of other problems, including the story. The story is already not the best, but the entire plot twist got ruined for me because I watched the memory from lurelin village which quite literally directly showed me that zelda was a puppet. All the memories about immortal dragons and then finding a dragon with zeldas hair and the master sword sticking out of it spoiled that. Anyways im sick of writing this review, i have even more issues with the game but overall it was a very unenjoyable experience, especially coming from BOTW. Expand

And thus Zelda continues as the most overrated franchise in gaming. Glorified DLC for Breath of the Wild, which was already a game lacking in meaningful content and good gameplay. I do not understand the hype. Makes me wonder how this would be received if it didn't have 'Zelda' in the title or 'Nintendo' on the box.

I'm sorry, but I believe I speak for A LOT of Zelda fans when I say that the classic formula worked for a reason. The sense of dungeon-crawling and using items to solve puzzles is just not present in BotW or TotK. Instead you're given all of your abilities at the start and you're handed a bunch of materials in a sandbox so that you can play Minecraft. To make matters worse, the sandboxes of BotW and TotK are VERY MUCH identical. So similar to the point that if you takes out the visuals and story of TotK then it would very much look like a DLC of BotW.

Speaking of the story... it's awful. The base plot is repeated all over the place, the resolution looks like something that was written out of an anime fanfiction, and the voiced dialogue is so cringe that it makes me wish when the characters didn't speak in past titles. VERY frustrating when other Zelda games had much better lore.

Sidequests and their rewards are either meh or pointless altogether. Shrines are even easier than they were in BotW. Combat is still trivial most of the time. Weapons and shields still break way too easily. Dungeons are all "look for four parts of the puzzle to fight the boss". Past abilities and even some past characters are inexplicably missing. These thing combined with many more all come together to make a huge mess of a game.

If you're big into Minecraft or open-world sandbox games in general then you'll like the game well enough. Otherwise old-school Zelda fans (and even some fans of BotW) won't care for this game nearly as much. Bring back the old formula, Nintendo.

Almost decent game, but a very bad and disastrous Zelda (and I'm going to judge it under that criteria), from the Zelda saga it only has the characters and some melodies. It's the same game as botw but with new tricks that further distance the game from the essence of the saga.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
