The biggest problem that DioField Chronicle faces is probably its theme. Post Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Game of Thrones, the new Lord of the Rings TV series, and all the rest, you’ve got to wonder whether dark Euro-fantasy is starting to wear thin on audiences. With that being said, the elevated presentation and abstract qualities of the game will hopefully help it find an audience even among those that are bored of the standard approach to the genre, and the relatively fresh take on real-time combat will hopefully help intrigue people. When you consider that 2022 has arguably been the best year of all time for the sheer quantity of excellent JRPG releases, the fact that DioField Chronicle comes across as a fresh and different approach to all of them is a truly impressive feat.

I set my expectations for The DioField Chronicle relatively high, which is a recipe for disaster. However, I’m pleased to report that I enjoyed this game at every turn. This ambitious cast star in a narrative that is running a contest for how much wool they can pull over each other’s eyes, and I am here for it every step of the way. I’d like some more, please too. A sequel or something in the same world with more political mayhem sounds fantastic. And more Waltaquin.

The Diofield Chronicle has been a pleasant surprise. Square Enix has come up with a new tactical role-playing IP with a deep and challenging real-time combat that brings a touch of freshness to the genre. Despite dragging narrative problems, if you like SRPGs, this game can earn a place on your console or PC.

Despite its shortcomings, The DioField Chronicle is still a solid tactical RPG experience with enough JRPG tropes to interest fans of both genres. The unique gameplay provides plenty of challenge, though it can require a lot of grinding to keep pace with the difficulty curve. The art style is beautiful both in and out of combat but the characters and plot fail to live up to the same standard. In this case, its ambition outstretched its means and it fell just short of where it wanted to be.

Despite the occasional stumble, The DioField Chronicle turns convention on its side regularly enough that even the more familiar elements feel fresh much of the time. Players have regularly encountered evil empires, warmongering generals, sneaky alliances, and corrupt church officials within the genre, in classic RPG experiences ranging from Suikoden to Final Fantasy Tactics and beyond. Those familiar tropes and themes have rarely been married with such a fresh combat system, however. There’s room for improvement across the board, but what’s available already is worth a look by strategy fans new and old alike.

Playing The DioField Chronicle, I kept thinking of the popular meme: “Mom, can we have Fire Emblem? No, we have Fire Emblem at home”. The DioField Chronicle could have been a competition for the Fire Emblem series, but it’s not as complex as it pretends to be, fails to offer anything more than just solid basics and ultimately turns out to be bland.

The semi-real-time battles are fun but a lack of depth soon dulls your enthusiasm for this limp Fire Emblem wannabe, as the rest of the game is taken up by tedious, choice-free conversations and lengthy cut scenes.

It gets a lot better when you get more into the game. The game without a doubt is beautiful. They definitely did well in this category. All the observable stuff like voice acting and music, is great. Perhaps many are comparing it to something like fire emblem. It is strictly combat, and there isn't much else. But the star-craft sort of controls on it are quite enjoyable. The characters could be a little more diverse in nature, but not too much of a problem. Strategy games like this aren't usually so strict on story, so there's not much to that. But there are a lot of details with the history of Diofield, which is observable in the "library" that there is in this game. I like SE trying out little niche titles like this.

It's a fun game and if you like the genre can give you around 30h of fun. However the history is a bit mediocre and the battles are very similar. The gameplay is solid and have a good artistic design.

Conclusion: if you like the genre can be a good option to spend some hours

This game is really rather dull, don’t believe the hype - or the fake “user” reviews.
