Some salty person very obviously made a ton of accounts to give negative ratings. Notice the written user reviews are varied, yet positive. No negative written reviews. Someone was really just that mad at the game and had the time on their hands.

I don't think I've every been as conflicted playing a game as this. There was maybe one character in this game that wasn't awful and completely unlikable. The game play is very simplistic and there's not real strategy to it at all. You can basically just move all your units ahead together and win every fight. The story itself isn't all that great either and the game doesn't look particularly good on switch. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for this as there are so many infinitely better tactical and strategy based JRPGs on switch. Expand

Not sure why there is such a quantity of low reviews. It was like they were only critiquing the demo.
It gets a lot better when you get more into the game. The game without a doubt is beautiful. They definitely did well in this category. All the observable stuff like voice acting and music, is great. Perhaps many are comparing it to something like fire emblem. It is strictly combat, and

But the star-craft sort of controls on it are quite enjoyable. The characters could be a little more diverse in nature, but not too much of a problem. Strategy games like this aren't usually so strict on story, so there's not much to that. But there are a lot of details with the history of Diofield, which is observable in the "library" that there is in this game. I like SE trying out little niche titles like this.

One of my favourite games of the year. For the entry game of a new IP, this game has a lot of potential should it have sequels produced for it. I really enjoyed the combat and the dialogue between characters. 10/10. Like I said, one of my fav games of the year, I’ve played around 60 games this year and it’s definitely my top 5 for enjoyment. Another awsone jrpg to play on the go. Grate game with awsome tactical combat to explore, lovable charters to meet and an interesting world to immerse yourself in. Playing through Diofild I could not help feeling like this game was a modern Japenese version of the amazing Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 games, even though the differences are obvious, it felt siimlar in many ways.

Overall a great experience. The game shines with its fast paced tactical combat. Feels very much like a mix of fire emblem gameplay with a game of thrones style story. The story does have some pacing issues, and can be a bit repetitive, but the good cast of characters and excellent gameplay make up for it.

I am really loving DioField Chronicles so far. Has a real Fire Emblem feel to it. Square-Enix really did a fine job. I havent ran into anything i dont like and i am 21 hours into the story and its a good story in fact. Graphics look nice, runs smooth and the voice actors arent too bad either. I love RTS-RPG games and DioField does not disappoint. Go give it a try!

A great strategy RPG. Love the art style. Love the story. The characters are awesome. Wish they went even deeper on the story and character building. Combat is great. I'm a huge fire emblem fan, and this sratched that itch well

This game is really rather dull, don’t believe the hype - or the fake “user” reviews.

Edited Mar 16 after finishing the game: The story is wow. The end was WOW (but they could've fleshed it out a little bit more... still WOW). Original, Mar 12, 2023: It's not a bad game at all. I'm currently at what I think is the halfway point of the game (given how many chapters I know there are) and did every subquest up to that point. At the very minimum it's a 7.5-8, but I'm giving it a 10 to counterbalance the reviews that basically never gave the game a chance. I was hooked by the end of chapter 1. The artwork is fantastic, voice acting is great (British English and Welsh accents as opposed to high pitched overly dramatic American English, thank goodness lol), good graphics, good RTS gameplay. Interacting with characters at the base is reminiscent to Fire Emblem Three Houses a tiny bit, but there's definitely not a lot of depth to the point of it becoming a social sim.

The performance on the switch could be a bit more smooth with slowdowns of graphics in between loading screens and there are control glitches in terms of targeting enemies. No doubt this is probably a better experience on PC, especially with more graphical power and better controls (even though there are a lot mixed reviews on Steam as well). It could have benefitted from more polish in terms of the menus, equipment systems, balancing, and more variety in objectives and adding more varied fighting styles (like how I've heard Octopath 2 improved over its predecessor in nearly every way). With the exception of weapons, it's a bit annoying to have to check what your characters have equipped before buying more stuff. The story might introduce too much to process at certain points, but even then, there's literally a library that you can visit to catch up and get more details on any character, plot point, the political power struggle via drawings of copies of the world map, or any battle.

If this was literally an RTS game given a different name with "Final Fantasy" or "Fire Emblem" attached to it, it would've gotten a higher score, honestly. So don't let the negative reviews fool you; this is a valiant attempt from Lancarse/Square-Enix. They were hoping to make this a new franchise that continues on and I certainly hope they do just like with Octopath. With improvements, it could become a release to watch out for.

Diofield Chronicles is definitely a decisive game for me. I liked the gameplay at first but realized how easy and repetitive it can get (specially if you are a veteran in SRPG's).

The story is fine but one of my problems with the narrative is how confusing it can be. You definitely need to pay good attention to all names, places and the game will throw a lot of world building at you at once. It doesn't help that most of the villains you encounter at the beginning and middle part of the game the nobles for example have no particular faces and just get some name drops and the game expects you to know each character and and and... Narrative wise this game feels like it wants to be another brilliant masterpiece like Triangle Strategy but Triangle put a LOT of hours to build up all characters the main cast and the villains so that you don't forget any character in that game while Diofield Chronicles, also made by Square Enix definitely lacks the polish Triangle Strategy got.

Overall Diofield Chronicles it's alright and if you can find the game for a reasonable price I would definitely pull the trigger but I don't recommend buying it at full price and I definitely would recommend to go with low expectations on this game.

A less than 5 rating? Thats way too harsh. I personally like the game even the games not perfect. The story and the characters are just OK but the gameplay is where it shines. Its a PC type strategy game like command and conquer but played on switch with a touch of fantasy. It reminds me somewhat of batte realms fused with FF tactics.

A decent strategy game, feels like if they make it to be a mobile game. It's a fun game and if you like the genre can give you around 30h of fun. However the history is a bit mediocre and the battles are very similar. The gameplay is solid and have a good artistic design.

Conclusion: if you like the genre can be a good option to spend some hours

It's the kind of scrappy contender you want to root for, but while its battle camera keeping you at a distance proves a smart move, the same can't be said for its story. [Issue#378, p.119]

Playing The DioField Chronicle, I kept thinking of the popular meme: “Mom, can we have Fire Emblem? No, we have Fire Emblem at home”. The DioField Chronicle could have been a competition for the Fire Emblem series, but it’s not as complex as it pretends to be, fails to offer anything more than just solid basics and ultimately turns out to be bland.

While The DioField Chronicle has some technical issues on Nintendo Switch, it is one of Square Enix's most interesting games in years, and one I recommend to anyone looking for a great strategy RPG. The diorama aesthetic is gorgeous and I love what the team did with the narrative and soundtrack here. Hopefully we get a sequel or story DLC in the future.
