If you were a video game developer and you happened to have a time machine, and for some reason you decided to use that time machine to travel specifically back to visit me on a Saturday morning around 30 years ago, and then you asked my childhood self what the perfect video game to make would be, I'm pretty sure I would have invented Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge on the spot. This game is the stuff of a young Turtles fan's dreams. [Issue #60 – July/August 2022, p. 68]

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge not only recreates the joy of encountering a Ninja Turtles classic arcade game from back in the day but perfectly mixes in modern-day conveniences like advanced combo controls, a multitude of moves, and characters that genuinely feel like they play differently for a more varied experience. Combined with all the deep cuts to the original 1987 cartoon and a powerful soundtrack featuring many songs from surprising sources, you have a powerful love letter to a long-running franchise you’ll want to return to again and again.

Shredder’s Revenge is a triumphant return for the Ninja Turtles. For all the reinventions and expansions of this classic property, there’s nothing quite like the original. Seeing the spirit of both the cartoon and Konami’s classic games so faithfully reproduced here was wondrous to behold. At the same time, Tribute Games has also managed to one up the games that came before it with a sharper combat system that allows for all sorts of creative ways to take down foes. Boss fights lack some of the nuance to defeat that rank and file grunts provide, but the spectacle of these battles makes up for that. Shredder’s Revenge is available via the eShop, but there are a number of ways to get hold of the game physically, as well. No matter how you play it, the heroes in a half shell are worthy of your time.

Two years in the making, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the best Turtles beat 'em up ever made, and a faster, better-looking, and more entertaining affair than even Streets of Rage 4. It looks delicious, sounds superb, and rekindles childhood memories beyond all expectation, time-warping you back to 1987. Its combat system is so much fun to mine that you feel compelled to keep coming back to try new strategies, and with its awesome multiplayer the experience evolves again and again. Like any beat 'em up, it does get repetitive as you enter the last third, but that’s more a fault of the concept than the game. Our only regret is that we didn’t use anywhere near enough puns in this review, so let’s close by saying Shredder’s Revenge is an unprecedented shell-ebration.

This new TMNT game stands out for being an artistic explosion with detailed pixel art and a good amount of nods for the most nostalgic. Its gameplay feels very smooth both on local and online multiplayer.

Even as a shorter game and with limited character leveling, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is arguably the best beat-em-up and TMNT experience ages. If you have a buddy or several to tackle the forces of foot clan evil with, jump on this one.

After that initial sugar rush, Shredder's Revenge inevitably feels a little thin. [Issue#374, p.121]

    Graphics: 9/10
The sprite work in this game is absolutely top notch. Really, I don’t know what else I could’ve asked out of this game in terms of how it looks because this is exactly the kind of presentation we should’ve gotten out of a TMNT game for ages now.

My only complaint about the art in this game is everything is a bit smaller than I’d like. This leads to problems which I get into below.

    Sound: 10/10
From the head bopping tracks to the hard hitting sound fxs to the excellent voice acting, the sound department hits its stride on all angles. Im sorta disappointed that we didnt get Pat Farley back as Krang and Baxter Stockman back. Really kinda confuses me as to why, considering he recently reprised his role in the 2012 series. But despite the new voices for all the other minor characters, Im glad that we got the main 4 reprising their roles nonetheless and the new cast still do a phenomenal job.

    Gameplay: 8/10
For a spiritual sequel to the originial arcade beat ‘em up titles, this game does a fantastic job at capturing the bone crushing gameplay, along with adding some new mechanics to the game to make it easier.

However, while I do appreciate the new special attacks and items, I do have an issue with how much easier the game suddenly becomes when you’re using them, ESPECIALLY in multiplayer. The sheer fact that you can taunt to refill the meter and constantly spam specials suddenly takes away any and all challenge you can get out of this game, and it does make it difficult to get the urge to play it more than once after a while, even with friends.

In addition, adding the ability to play with up to 6 players was something I was extremely excited about, but once I saw how the smaller sprites were even harder to identify at times with the chaotic gameplay with a full party of 6, I realized that this made this a bit more of a hindrance than I’d like.

Despite these issues, the gameplay is still pretty fun and enjoyable, but it certainly makes it to where it’s enjoyable at short bursts once you beat the game.

    Story: 8/10
If you’re looking for super deep lore in a game based on the 1987 series… boy, you dont know this series do you?

Still, the story in this game is as action packed yet humorous as you’d except out of that iteration of the franchise. In a way, it almost felt like I was watching an extended episode.

    Difficulty: 1/5 (Very Easy)
Even on the most difficult setting, the gameplay mechanics I mentioned make this an absolute breeze to plow through, especially if you’re playing multiplayer. Playing single player MIGHT give a challenge on the hardest difficulty, but it’s almost mandatory to play a game like this with others.

    BOTTOM LINE:
    9/10

Despite the faults this game has in the gameplay department, this game serves the very same purpose the original arcade titles aimed to do: Provide a quick and fun multiplayer session with random people or with friends. I highly HIGHLY suggest getting the switch version just for the sake of being able to bring this game with you on the go and while meeting with friends, busting out this title to play locally.

If you never got a chance to experience the joy of the original arcade game and you’re looking for an awesome time, this is your best bet!

The game isn'tPeople aren't wrong when they say this is the greatest TMNT game ever, and possibly one of the best beat 'em ups ever as well. The game isn't perfect though, all the playable characters handle basically the same and for me the game would be better if they all handled differently and I'd have liked to see higher resolution pixel art but I do see what the devs are going for here, they want the game to look as much like the cartoon and retro era games as possible. I'd have liked the music to be more catching as well but this is also another personal preference. Other than that, TMNT Shredder's Revenge is a must have beat 'em up for TMNT and beat 'em up fans.
