Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan has great playability, keeping things challenging and allowing you to re-challenge main bosses. It’s just a few glitches that hinder the gameplay and subtract from the experience, yet it still remains extraordinarily fun.

None of it quite meshes together as effortlessly as the games from which it takes influence, and there are some minor frustrations to take note of. Primarily, unlocking new levels requires a set number of crystal skulls which are hidden among stone blocks – these can be quite tricky to find on your first visit, so you’ll likely need to replay levels two, or maybe even three times to unlock enough to progress further, which can prove irritating after a while.

While the adventure held my attention for a little while, eventually the backtracking and repetition wore me down. Those looking for a demanding action-platformer with Metroidvania elements may find buried treasure here. Others are just as likely to find Sydney Hunter full of fool’s gold.

It has elements that you may recognize from the Mega Man series, Castlevania series, with some others mixed in. The music is catchy, and the level designs are solid. The game is challenging, yet fair, and the difficulty makes it even that much more rewarding to beat. The story is interesting with the Mayan backdrop, and you can tell that the team did their research on the Mayan mythology. I also really enjoyed the humour in the game. I definitely recommend Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan. Full Review »
