Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan is a fun action platformer that harken back to the retro games. It has elements that you may recognize from the Mega Man series, Castlevania series, with some others mixed in. The music is catchy, and the level designs are solid. The game is challenging, yet fair, and the difficulty makes it even that much more rewarding to beat. The story is interesting with the Mayan backdrop, and you can tell that the team did their research on the Mayan mythology. I also really enjoyed the humour in the game. I definitely recommend Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan. Expand

    + Great pixel art.
    + Controls are tight
    + Not overly maze like.
+ It's not full of gimmicks that hurt other retro style games.
+ Doesn't get too difficult too quickly.
+- Music is a mixed bag, some great and so irritating music.
    - I love finding secrets but with this game it's kinda forced and not an extra.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sydney Hunter is back and better than ever! This game delivers on its promise of adventure, fun and danger. Every stage area is unique in its own theming based on the Mayan god of its boss stages. The colors are vibrant when they need to be, the atmosphere does a great job of feeling like you’re truly venturing through a cursed Mayan temple with enemies on every screen. There’s plenty of traps to beware of including fire pits, spikes, shooting spears and more. The weapons, sub weapons and item pick ups are all very useful and each serve a purpose in every stage. There are save areas in the levels that not only let you save your progress but also replenish your health meter, which is more than appreciated. The difficulty can be harsh at times, especially with a certain boss, but control makes up for that. The game controls very well and is tight, something you always need in a platformer. This game excels on adventure, something to keep you coming back for more. Expand

Amazing game! The graphics and playability are an awesome throwback to the retro good old days. The story is very well thought out and is a really fun adventure. The soundtrack is amazing. I’m really happy I picked this one up, highly recommend!

I did a pretty in-depth review of this game over on my youtube channel called "Media Glitch." I really enjoyed this game; infact, it's what the gaming community needs right now. Well, Sydney Hunter does a great job reminding us of why we're all gamers today. I see some reviews complain about backtracking and to that, I say "welcome to retro," and you obviously didn't play the games of old like Metroid or The Legend of Zelda on the NES because they were full of that. This game does so much stuff right from the great graphics to the outstanding level design. The story and culture of the Mayans were handled with great care. It shows in all the details and names spread throughout the game. The music is top-notch, and the game difficulty is just right. The gameplay is smooth, and if you die, you know it was only the fault of your own and not inadequate controls. Do your self a favor and picked this one up. It will help you relive some of those great memories of the past or help you understand the history of videogame and where we came from. Expand

Honestly, most of the game is great, but there are a few absolutely BAFFLING decisions that make it so annoying for me. As an example, if you put unskippable cutscenes in your game, that you have to watch each time you lose against the boss, **** you and your game. Wouldn't be as bass if boss designs were less obtuse, especially the last one. Game is fantastic. Very retro feeling but polished like a modern game. You can really tell developers put their heart and soul into the game. Game is difficult but is rewarding when you practice some parts a few times. Props to the developers.

This is one of the best platforming games to come out in years. It takes every good aspect of many classic platforming games and creates an unforgettable masterpiece. The graphics, music and gameplay are all top notch. If you are a fan of classic platforming games, Sydney Hunter is a must buy.

Wow, I didn’t see this one coming. I love retro platform games, especially those with Metrovania ingredients, and “Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan” ticks all my boxes. Beautiful pixel art, great chip tunes, but more importantly, great gameplay. The levels are well designed and encourage exploration in order to find all its secrets. Beautiful pixel art, great chip tunes, but more importantly, great gameplay. The levels are well designed and encourage exploration in order to find all its secrets. The game is quite difficult, but never unfair. The controls are very tight (you can never blame them), and there are enough save points as to not make you play massive sections again. It’s a pleasure to revisit levels once new abilities are acquired. My only tiny criticism is that it took me quite a while to work out what to do against the very final boss.

“Sydney Hunter” is a contender for my personal game of the year. Once, I started it, I struggled to put it down until it was finished, which took a few days. I had never played a Sydney Hunter game before, but this one has made me want to try them all!

Great platformer game. This reminds me of Montezuma's Revenge. I bought it and told my granddaughter about it. She bought it, too. :)

This game has MANY rough edges, unpolished gameplay and generally amateurish production quality.
I have no idea why there are so many overwhelmingly positive reviews for this game... the only thing that makes sense to me is the possibility that most of the reviewers were paid.
By the way, the creator of the original Sydney Hunter game seems to agree that this game is trash:

Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan has great playability, keeping things challenging and allowing you to re-challenge main bosses. It’s just a few glitches that hinder the gameplay and subtract from the experience, yet it still remains extraordinarily fun.

Retro-inspired 2D platformers simply don't get much better than Sydney Hunter so grab your whip and get ready for a great time.

While the adventure held my attention for a little while, eventually the backtracking and repetition wore me down. Those looking for a demanding action-platformer with Metroidvania elements may find buried treasure here. Others are just as likely to find Sydney Hunter full of fool’s gold.
