I would have liked the whole game's use of the capture mechanic to be like in cap land, where there were Winged Goombas that you could capture for fun. I didn't really like to capture many enemies though, I felt they were clunky and very situational. Some of the best ones like the tank, winged gooma, Tropical Wigglerr Flying Dino Dude and Dinosaur are fun because they shake up the game play so much. I was hoping the levels would be bigger, like maybe all Sand Kingdom size, but I know that it's quality over quantity. Some of the moons felt like Korok seeds, just because they were so easy to find.
I've been negative, so now what I liked. I loved the fact that Cappy can be used as a platform to jump off of. It made me feel like a bad ass when I could scale a wall from my platforming ability. The moons that have some form of a level I really enjoyed. Being able to jump from a high place and being able to get to a platform made me feel cool. Moving around felt fun, platforming was fun and the levels were never badly designed, maybe just bland at some points. The motion controls were really, really well implemented in my experience. The cap attacks like homing cap were easy to perform consistently. I have not finished the game, so I might redo this review if my opinion changes.

Super Mario Odyssey is exactly what you'd expect in a Mario game, and I mean that in a good way. It's fun, colorful, inventive, well-designed, energetic, and a great multiplayer experience. The Moon-shrine thingies (I refuse to search up what they're even called) are fun to collect, but most of the worlds you travel through feel too safe and simplistic to leave an impression on me. Plus, the motion controls feel uneven and convoluted on first try.

Regardless, Super Mario Odyssey is still worth checking out. Great level-designs, unique details, crisp animations, and has that palpable sense of joy that most Nintendo games possess. The lack of challenges is a little off-putting, so I can't say it's as memorable as Breath of the Wild. Still very good. 8/10

Super Mario Odyssey is by far the best 3D Mario title that Nintendo has ever produced. It owes so much of it's success to Super Mario 64 and is extremely creative and innovative with the new "Capture" mechanic. However, I am only giving t a 9 out of 10 because of the issue with the motion controls. While they are appreciated, Nintendo could easily map these motion control options to actual buttons. For example, rather than having two buttons to throw Cappy, have one to throw him and one to do the spin attack. This issue could easily be solved in a patch or update though, and when and if that does happen, I would increase my score to a perfect 10 in a heartbeat.

The graphics in my opinion are absolutely gorgeous and are a massive step up from Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube and the Galaxy games on the Wii, outputting to 1080p 60fps when in the dock and 900p 60fps when in handheld mode, which is very impressive considering how massive the game is.

The main object of the game is to collect Power Moons, which are the equivalent to Stars in Super Mario 64. While Super Mario 64 had only 130 stars, increased to 150 on the DS remake, Odyssey boasts almost 1000, and that number could go up even further inf Nintendo decides to make and release DLC that increases the number of moons and kingdoms, which by the way, there are currently 17 kingdoms as of the time of writing this review.

Another great addition to this game is the various 2D sections where if you go into a pixel pipe, you come out the other side as a]m 8-bit 2D Mario, paying tribute to the original Super Mario Brothers game released on the NES in 1985.

What also amazed me about this game is Nintendo's incredible attention to detail. For example, when you enter an 8-bit section, the music alongside the game turn into an 8-bit version of itself and whatever outfit you happen to be wearing for Mario a the time will also be represented in 8-bit.

In conclusion, not only has has Nintendo produced 2 incredible games, Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, both of which are 10/10 quality on their new smash hit system, the Switch, but Super Mario Odyssey I think will go down as one of the absolute best video games... OF ALL TIME! WELL DONE NINTENDO!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In Super Mario Odyssey, there are lots of places to explore. This game focuses a lot on the capture abilities, and many areas are based around them. I really liked this mechanic, and each and every capture is different, except for a few exceptions. I also liked the kingdoms in this game. While some are pretty small, they all feel big in their own way. Each kingdom holds various moons, which are similar to the stars and shines of previous titles, but also the korok seeds of loz botw. I was shocked finding out there is 883 collectible moons in the game, and even more shocked when you can buy the rest for a total of 999 MOONS. Each collectible moon feels rewarding, but I don't really like how you can buy them. I can take one point off for that, since instead of doing the hard work of finding all collectible moons you can just buy them. Each of the platforming sections feel difficult to the skill level they are targeting, and some sub levels in the kingdom do have difficult challenges for a rookie platformer like me. Most enemies were not difficulties, but that makes sense, since in this game enemies are to control, not kill. Though I didn't like how easy some bosses were, another point off for that. The only boss that seemed hard for me was the dragon boss.
In summary, Super Mario Odyssey is a great game that celebrates this great franchise, but it does have its share of flaws. I enjoyed this game to my hearts content, and loved exploring the diverse areas of the beautiful game. I hope that when you play this game, you feel the same.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game, while in my non platforming or collectathon fans opinion is near perfection and is undoubtedly a masterpiece is not without two faults that stop it from being a perfect ten in my honest opinion, (the only other one i consider myself a true fan of is Mario 64) the two faults lie within only moderate parts of the game, being the repetition of bosses , forced fights with Bowser's minion wedding planners multiple times each for the main story, while i could see why they did this i would have really preferred some more moons in different smaller areas, well hidden or even in plain sight/ awarded for completing a mission like the others, this bleeds into the post game where as a chunk of the challenges are re fighting the bosses, yes this is pretty common in video games but over the years the Mario series has proven to be more creative than this, that said i know a lot of people like boss rematches are popular but ive never really liked them, aside from maybe going back to fight ganondorf because of the epic nature those fights are presented with and usually only fought once in the game, also a bonus kingdom shares in this theme with the dark side of the moon housing a boss rush tower and seemingly not much else, the icing on the cake however goes back to when the amiibo were first revealed in their packaging , logos for the kingdoms are shown on a globe completed across all three boxes, isle delphino from Mario sunshine to my knowledge being the only one not to be in the game, while the mushroom kingdom was shown but was never in any trailer, serves as the love letter tribute setting of the post game in the form of peach's castle from super Mario 64 , complete with Yoshi still hanging out on the roof waiting for Mario to come say hello and throw his hat to control his reptillian friend, a couple of things i forgot to mention are the oddly real looking dragon boss, sent at you by Bowser as well as an escape sequence right befor the credits with the final area collapsing around you, which brings back flashbacks of escaping hyrule castle in ocarina of time, the only big differences being that there is no swerve extra boss phase and that you actually get control of Bowser himself to get yourself and Peach out of there set to a track that puts even jump up superstar to shame. In conclusion i can say without a doubt this game stands as my all time favorite Mario and platformer and these few small admittedly personal gripes should not deter anyone from buying this game, it is a must own for any switch owner Expand

I've only got one major complaint: the controls. Sure, for basic gameplay they're acceptable. But playing tabletop mode makes Mario's movements limited as you're unable to preform so many of the hat spins and throws. Even more so when playing in docked mode with two separate joycons the actions never seem to work. I've never once been able to flick my hat up or down--and spinning it in a circle is always a hit or miss. This is obviously frustrating, as I'd like Mario to move, jump, and act with as much fluidity as possible.

That being said, still an amazing game overall, and definitely worth the purchase price.

It brings delightful mechanics and new interesting exploration that hasn't been seen in the series since Super Mario 64. The textures, framerate, and cartooney-graphics on the switch are a match made in heaven. This game is definitely worthy of being ranked amongst some of the best video games of all time. While I'd love to give this game a perfect 10/10 there is one major gripe holding it back; the controls. The controls are, well, not great. For the best experience the game should be played with the joy-cons separated due to the motion control aspect of throwing "Cappy." I have issues with the joy-cons for separate reasons that I won't list in this review. But in summary, the controllers don't sync well from a distance (i.e. which is not so good for home theatre setups), the thumb-sticks are in an awkward position, and the motion controls aren't always super accurate. I can't tell you how many times I went for a circular throw of Cappy only to have Mario throw him straight forward. I originally thought that the motion controls were a gimmick until I saw them being integral in games like the new Zelda. Games like Super Mario Odyssey make me concerned for the future of gaming on the console. There is a reason I went out and bought the $70 pro-controller. I didn't want to have to deal with the gimmicks or the cramping. The controls really disrupt the experience of the game and makes it much more "choppy" than its handheld controller predecessors. What's worse is that the other two methods of playing aren't much better either. If you want to play in handheld-mode get ready to shake that switch worse than a 90-year-old with Parkinsons. Want to play with a controller? Have fun trying to get accurate motion controls. That's what justifies the two point deduction. All-in-all this game is a must buy if you own a switch. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not buying this game. Expand

Each world you visit in your journey doesn't overstay its welcome and is very consistent and smart about treating the player to wonderfully designed sandbox environments and well thought out mini challenges. The real highlight however isn't what we already know about 3d Mario, its what's new to the party. Mario on his predictable yet charmingly traditional journey to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser meets a new friend, the top hat shaped ghost named Cappy, who allows Mario to possess and control new and old enemies. One cant help but wonder how Nintendo come up with these insane ideas, but this mechanic is more than just your typical gimmick and proves that Nintendo still have the skill and genius to successfully supply joyful and mind blowing moments. Playing as a Bullet Bill, Goomba and other old enemies is beyond satisfying, but surprisingly the new enemies prove to be the best monsters to capture and play as. As well as your standard minions stopping you in your path, you'll also meet some of the best bosses in Mario's history, one of them in particular left me speechless and I'm sure will do the same to you. The game is a jaw dropping package of new ideas built on a solid foundation made by previous Mario games, and im thrilled to say that this is yet another Masterpiece by Nintendo.

I never experienced the older Mario games, as this is my second 3-D single player Mario platformer. However, being a Game Historian, I have noticed the combination of new ideas, controls, and advanced movement with nostalgic bosses and gameplay, a feat achieved by many of the newer Triple A titles on the Switch. The persistence of the spirit of the old games continues to live on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a while now I have felt that Mario games were getting stale. They were always fun though since the Galaxy games every new entry felt the same with little creativity. Well it seems as though Nintendo finally let out their crazy ideas at once for Super Mario Odyssey as it is the most creative and wacky Mario game in ten years. To start, Super Mario Odyssey is a game that is simply pure fun. It is the modern day Super Mario 64 with tons of collectibles, great music, and colorful environments. The main thing that makes Mario Odyssey great is how fun it is to control Mario. He has many of the moves from past games such as the triple jump, long jump, and dive. But the thing that really adds more to this installment is the new hat character Cappy. Cappy allows Mario to make insane jumps and control his enemies making exploring each Kingdom exciting and unique from one another. The game's main story is short which may be disappointing though I feel the game really gets going after the final boss as each area gets filled with more power moons to collect and even a post game kingdom longtime fans are sure to love. Some of the areas in this game are undoubtedly the best in the Mario series. The best kingdoms are the largest ones such as New Donk City, Steam Gardens, Tostarena, and Mount Volbono. Though some Kingdoms are lackluster due to their small size and lack of areas to explore. There is one kingdom in particular later in the game that looked really unique aesthetically though there weren't many things to do in it which I felt was a really missed opportunity. There are some areas in this game where I felt Nintendo could have done more with.Super Mario Odyssey is probably the first game that really shows of what the Switch can do. The power moons are quick enough to get individually for handheld play but also satsfying to collect for long play sessions on the TV.. I also believe playing with the detached Joy cons is the best way to enjoy the game as they allow quick movement and allow you to target your cap throw to enemies, objects and collectibles. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is the most fun Mario game since the Galaxy games. It returns to the sandbox style of Mario 64 which makes the game feel familiar but the surprises of the kingdoms and capture abilities gives a much needed breath of fresh are for a franchise that was starting to feel generic. A tribute to 64
Super Mario 64, one of, if not the most loved 3D platformer of all time set the standards, along with Crash Bandicoot, of what this type of game should be. They set the bar high, and not many other titles have been able to reach it, let alone exceed it. Along with games such as the remastered Crash Bandicoot "N-Sane Trilogy" and "A Hat In Time" This particular 3D platform feels like a special tribute in honour of the 3D Platforming era of the mid-to-late 90s. It's smooth gameplay, remarkable graphics and it's cute and charming story makes this game what it is, and the possession cap ability adds an extra layer of gameplay. The hidden collectibles on each map makes every space used for something that isn't just platforming. Overall, this game is a beautiful, remarkable achievement in gaming history, and it's selling fast, as well as the console.

    OVERALL VERDICT:

    10/10 - Masterpiece

It's amazing graphics, attention to detail and smooth, responsive controls makes this game shine through all the other titles of this year. It's beautiful soundtrack makes it stand out, and it is an essential game to buy in the new year.

Cappy. He can capture ALMOST ANYTHING. Even a hand in the Knucklotec fight, to revive the feel of punching goombas.
The number of moons. 833 not including Crazy Cap ones. I salute those people who 100%ed this game, as there is so much content.

Crazy Cap stores. Tired of regular ol' Mario? If you earn enough kingdom specific purple coins, you can buy a new outfit for Mario. There are a total of 42 outfits and 41 hats.

The difficulty progression. As you get further into the game, the difficulty increases. Take the Cascade Kingdom and compare it to the Darker Side for example. You probably get it now.

I've been adding lots of pros, and I don't want to add more because it would take a long time.

Cons: Not really many. The number of moons would go here too because there are way too many.

I love this game so much First one thing people seem to bash on about is the difficulty, some say its the same old 2d game slapped into a 3d game.2 Words you are wrong first its a Mario game just look at Mario galaxy 2 and tell me that the final boss is even partly hard and I will face palm myself.Just tell me how you could compare that final boss to you freaking possessing a trex in the 2nd world thats about 11 or 12 kingdom's before the final boss the final boss,Some say its total old content. When in reality have you possessed a tank, yoshi,a trex, and Bowser!Or get chased by a trex in new donk city. Then later have a section where you go pixel mode and play jump man aka donkey kon the first game Mario aka Jumpman debuted in?In fact the only reason I consider giving it a 9 is because of the motion controls and thats it.Added Sarcastic remark The games totally easy its not like every single technique has its situation use which takes time to practice and the fact every transformation has a limit you have to go and find a way to make it useful example People who don't know how every transformation is useful someway:Oh look a useless goomba it can't jump high it's useless.People who do know how every transformation has a use:Hm a goomba what should I do.1 minute later finally I stacked 100 goomba now I can jump to the sky. Also side note for people who don't know you lose 10 coins and you can buy stuff with it in a non mario rpg game! Super Mario Odyssey is a brilliant game which seamlessly throws back to the classic while mixing it up with innovations like Cappy and the new kingdoms to explore. This game also allows Mario to control and move way better than any of his predecessors. With so much to do even after the main story, Super Mario Odyssey will bring you back after time and time again, like it has many others.

This game features a welcomed and appreciated return to form, with the platforming akin to the days of 64 and sunshine. but it still struggles to escape the shadow of Super Mario Galaxy, a game which it has failed to top in my eyes. Some of the tedious missions, but mostly a real lack of interest to collect them all, keep me from liking this game as much as Galaxy or 64

Super Mario Odyssey attempts to bring new ideas to the table without going overboard and right away it just straight out worked. Sure the changes to certain Mario gameplay may be a huge hit-in-the-spot, but you can easily ignore all of this game's problems due to the way this game's presentation is being shown right when the game is being played. Just how many games do I need to give this very high score anyways? This is the best game of all time on the Nintendo Switch. You get to explore different worlds and it's a very relaxing game. It's doesn't exist words for how good this game is, it's that good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. In my opinion, it is the best Mario game of the franchise. All of the kingdoms are quite lovely and offers a great variety places to explore. It is what I consider to be the true sequel to Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64 era. Though, the main story is quite short and easy and can be completed in around an hour, that isn't what makes this game amazing. So if you're someone who doesn't like collectathons and trying to get every little thing then this game might not be for you, but for someone who loves to 100% games then this game will be perfect for you. There are over 850 moons in the game (maxing out at 999 moons including the ones you buy from the shops infinitely) and most kingdoms have regional coins which you collect to buy stickers or props for your Odyssey (usually 50 or 100 regional coins per kingdom). The game is NOT perfect in any way, and that's the only reason why it doesn't get a 10 from me. Just to say though, that is not a bad thing to say about a fantastic game like this, I want games that are not perfect already as it'll give room for improvement in the next lineup in Mario games. You will get a TON of hours out of this game, as I currently have around 700 moons and already have 52 hours into the game. Solid game, definitely worth the $60 you must pay for it. Expand

    Level Design

Almost every level in this game is gold. From sand kingdom's sprawling expanses to metro kingdom's hustle and bustle to luncheon kingdom's food -themed delight, every new kingdom holds a new suprise.

    Mechanics

Cappy is a wonderful addition to the cast of this game, and as mario's companion, he has a lot of cool moves. my personal favorite is his ability to possess many of the game's enemies. controling timeless enemies like the Goomba, Bullet Bill and Chain Chomp is a blast, and many of the boss fights are desinged with this mechanic in mind.

    Story

This game's story is pretty basic. Bowser has kidnapped Peach so that he can marry her, and Mario and Cappy have to stop him. over the course of the game he steals many wedding-related items from the kingdoms, such as a ring from the Sand Kingdom, a Dress from the Lake Kingdom, and so on.

    Conclusion

I'd say this game is very, very good. the only problem that I have with it is that it's maybe a little too easy, and by that I mean the actual story part of the game is a little to easy, but that's about it. thanks for reading my review. bye!

Super Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess PeachSuper Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess Peach but nevertheless nobody plays mario for the plot anyway. Odyssey takes the standard platform genre and turns it into a sandbox styled environment. Mario will travel the globe going to numerous kingdoms of willd and abstract themes such as the luncheon kingdom which is a rainbow delicacy world or the seaside kingdom where the oceans are made of fizzy water. Each kingdom is PACKED with creativity and charm and most of them are giant. Some kingdoms are smaller and has less exploration value such as the cascade and lake kingdoms but the majority are gigantic. The main motive for travelling to these worlds is that Bowser is collecting possessions and relics from these kingdoms to use at the wedding where he will be officially married to the princess and Mario must go on a wild chase through each kingdom trying to catch his "minions". This is another thing that the game does extraordinarily well the koopa kids are scrapped and no longer exist and have been replaced by "the broodals" a play on words of "the brutals" and "Bride" and are the head party planners of the wedding. It's genuinely lovely to see a new type of mainline enemy because lets be honest, we all knew that the koopa kids were getting really old really fast. The boss fights however are the very standard 3 hit phase bosses we find in many games but especially mario. Each boss must be hit 3 times and each one of them will make the boss battle harder but the chances of you dying are slim, the bosses are really easy, granted this is a kids game but there's a difference between easy and a complete pushover (which they were) however some kingdoms have a regional boss that can only be found in that kingdom aside from the broodals such as a giant squid or mechanical flower machine??? Like I said the creativity in this game is astronomical so the bosses are bound to be creative. Although they are easy there is a certain post game activity where you will fix this problem. The game isn't meant to focus heavily on story. instead it focuses on exploration and diving (quite literally!) into every nook and cranny of the kingdom, if you want to rush through the story you can do it in an hour, but that's if you are properly speed-running, the game WANTS you to explore so if that's not your thing you may find the game disappointing. Aswell as a game of endless creativity, new enemys and boss battles and reminiscing to the days or classic Mario, Odyssey has the biggest move set ever in a Mario game, the amount of tricks and parkour you can play around with in this game is mind blowing. To list a few: Dive, roll, cap jump, cap dive, cap roll, ground-pound-jump, twirl, double jump, and many many more. The main attraction however is the brand new capture ability which REALLY puts the cherry on the cake, early in the game a hat creature from the cap kingdom takes control of marios cap after it gets shredded to pieces creating basically a living mario hat. Throwing your hat at an enemy will allow you to essentially dive into their body and take control of them. As you can imagine this opens tons of possibility's! You can be a bullet bill to soar through the skies, play as a hammer bro or goomba, swim through lava as a lava bubble and my personal favourite is that you can be dinosaur and rampage through the lands of cascade kingdom! The games main collectables are called power moons and they are used to power up the odyssey (your ship) there are absolutely tons in each kingdom and in some there are even over 100 to collect, there are a grand total of 999 moons to collect which are even more than korok seeds in zelda so there's plenty to do there. Another collectable are regional coins which are different designs for each kingdom, you can use these to purchase stickers or souvenirs for the odyssey. Collecting regular coins allows you to buy outfits for Mario including some really nifty original styles in the post-game. Talking about post-game, the post-game has huge value, probably one of the biggest I've seen. Most of the moons dont become available until after the ending is unlocked and a few more tricks and appearances become available including some new kingdoms which is a delight because in a game as short as odyssey you need tons of post-game value which is delivered well. There is a mode called snapshot mode where you can freeze the game and take wonderful pictures with countless filters which can then be used for mobile or desktop backgrounds.
In general odyssey is a switch mustbuy, great exploration, outstanding creativity and an absolute joy to play keeping you hooked for ages

Odyssey looks like a straight successor to the Mario 64 and Sunshine line of sandbox 3D Marios, but it is much more than that. Naturally, it evokes, honors, and is sometimes directly inspired by the games that came before it in its characters, music, and mechanics. But it also has new things to say as well, like fusing classic-style 2D gameplay with the 3D world and using a completely newOdyssey looks like a straight successor to the Mario 64 and Sunshine line of sandbox 3D Marios, but it is much more than that. Naturally, it evokes, honors, and is sometimes directly inspired by the games that came before it in its characters, music, and mechanics. But it also has new things to say as well, like fusing classic-style 2D gameplay with the 3D world and using a completely new possession mechanic to add constant variety to Mario’s abilities and exploits.

That possession power, embodied by Mario’s new sidekick/headwear Cappy, is Odyssey’s big new idea. In keeping with Nintendo’s decades-long tradition of charmingly nonsensical storylines, he’s a hat with a soul, and he’s teamed up with Mario in order to rescue his sister Tiara who… wait for it... has been kidnapped by Bowser along with Princess Peach. (I said it was charming, not original.) Cappy’s power allows you to possess many other characters by throwing Mario’s hat at them, which bizarrely slurps Mario’s physical body inside of the enemy and gives you full control over their powers. Cappy’s also used as a jumping pad and a weapon, sparing Mario’s tuchus from an untold number of butt-stomps this time around (though you can still do that, if you wish). Many of the cleverest and most smile-inducing possessions are best left to be discovered for yourself, but whether it was thrashing about as a huge, realistic-looking T-rex in the prehistoric-themed Cascade Kingdom or becoming a lowly Goomba but then making a stack of Goombas 10-tall to win over a hard-to-impress Lady Goomba, Odyssey mixes up the gameplay in surprising ways in each of its 16-plus worlds. Throughout the entire campaign, you’re using new creatures in new, game-changing ways on a regular basis.

Odyssey’s inspired integration of 2D gameplay – complete with Super Mario Bros.-era 8-bit art – deserves special mention. Entering into a pixelated pipe in the 3D space transports you to a side-scrolling 2D challenge that takes place on the surface of an object in the world, almost like Link’s 2D transformation in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Most of these sequences aren’t too long – I wished they were longer, in fact – but each blends pure, weapons-grade retro gameplay with numerous other callbacks while still mixing things up in ways they never appeared in those original games, such as flipping gravity or wrapping the 2D scene around the corner of a 3D object. They bend the rules so far they go beyond even the most ambitious creations we saw in Super Mario Maker. It’s also super fun seeing Mario’s new costumes get translated into the old 8-bit art style. My favorites include the aviator suit and the retro-colored builder outfit, for no other reason than them being fun looks for the veteran plumber, but you can also mix and match hats and outfits to your heart’s content.

Of all the disparate lands Mario visits in his Odyssey, the urban-themed Metro Kingdom is my favorite. We’ve never seen anything like its semi-realistic look of New Donk City in a Mario game before. Not only do its urban obstacles allow for some kinetic platforming – bouncing off of the hoods of cars and flinging yourself off of city poles, for instance – but tucked-away minigames like an RC car race and a jump-rope challenge are great diversions. All the while, the sheer artistic contrast between the city and Mario’s consistently cartoony look and proportions have already generated interesting discussions about who – or more specifically what – Mario actually is. (Was “plumber” just a euphemism for some kind of goblin all along?) The end of the New Donk City portion might, in fact, be the very peak of the pleasure that Odyssey delivers on a consistent basis. Its conclusion is a literal celebration that doubles as a figurative one; Odyssey is pure joy that seems to understand and relish that about itself. On that note, I strongly recommend playing on a TV whenever possible. It’s not that it plays poorly in handheld mode – it runs perfectly smoothly at 60 frames per second in either mode, although there are no touchscreen controls even in minigames where they’d have made sense. The drawback to playing on the go is that the tiny screen doesn’t do nearly as good a job of showing off the scope and detail of the characters and worlds, such as the funny faces Mario makes when performing certain actions and the tiny 8-bit icons hidden on some walls. (Toss Cappy at them to get a quick gold-coin reward!). Of course, it’s every bit as good a game in handheld mode.
Overall Super Mario Odyssey is a brilliant adventure and love letter to the series that made Nintendo a household name.

There is enough challenges in this game to feel a sense of fulfilment once you complete a level, collect that damn seemingly elusive moon or beat a boss. However, there is also a real urge to do one better by collecting more items or coins to unlock outfits for your favourite protagonist. Who knew that Mario would become the fashion icon he is in 2017/2018? And who knew parading him in these outfits would bring simple joy?
I played this game and I smiled a lot throughout and it had me thinking, I cannot remember the last time I played a single player game (please do not count having a friend play as cappy as multiplayer, it isn't, it's torture) where I actually laughed out loud as much or even just smiled.
Well done Nintendo, all that is missing is a better multiplayer mode and larger levels. It's a game that ended too soon on the first play through.

The gameplay is astounding, the visuals are beautiful, the story is, well, it's a Mario game, so it doesn't matter, the music is incredibly catchy, Cappy serves as a great sidekick (who comes with a side bonus of cap-diving and breaking the game). I have got up to beating the Darker Side, and the best part is New Donk City. It is a huge, innovative, open-world map, but there is always something to do. Bowser's Kingdom isn't just a simple lava dungeon, but a Japanese-styled mansion world, with my favorite enemy, the Pokio. The Moon served as a great final level, with the Dark and Darker Sides being, well, hard. The callbacks to Super Mario 64, particularly in the Mushroom Kingdom, are great (I grew up with the DS version, so it is quite nostalgic to me) and when the update comes out, I'm grabbing the outfits, I'm using the filters, I'm playing Balloon World, and I consider this game the best Mario game of all time, and my personal favorite game of all time. Now for my problems. This game has a lot of nit-picks watering it down. My biggest problem is the difficulty. Easy games for me just seem boring and no want to replay the main game over again. Also, why forced motion controls? i like playing my switch portable mode but forcing motion controls sometimes make me dock it or play another game entirely! Luckily, you can totally get past the entire game without using motion controls, but i'm somewhat of a completionist and some moons require them. The transformations are personally fine, but they aren't a game changer they just feel like power-ups in disguise. I would give this game a 7.5/10, i can't do that so i just rounded. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. YES YES YES ALL THE YES! This game...THIS! GAME! IT'S THE BEST THING I'VE PLAYED IN A LONG TIME! As someone who grew up playing games like Sunshine and Galaxy it would make perfect sense for Nintendo to step back into their comfort zone why'll also pushing their mascot forward. And if anything it was a perfect idea. They pushed Mario back into the open world, sandbox styled gameplay why'll making him explore all these great, wide, wacky worlds (Sorry. I just had to) And bringing back old characters like Pauline and even put Mario in Nintendo's version of dark souls. All the controls feel fluid and nice. They're not too stiff but not to loose either. Basically a perfect mix of the two. The one problem i have with Mario in this game is that trying to move on small platforms are in the sky is pretty, pretty, pretty hard. With the sky you do have a bit more control since throwing Cappy allows you to snap your movement in a different direction but when you're trying to sneak on a platform to be sure not to fall into some icky goop in the Lost Kingdom it can be really hard and you might even end up falling down and doing the exact opposite of what you wanted to do in some cases, depending on where you are. Other than that the game is just absolutely phenomenal. I mean it has it's flaws as all games do but you can still enjoy the heck out of it from start to finish. All the post game content is great as well. You've got the Mushroom Kingdom, you have more power moons to collect, You have Weegee's Balloon World and you even have more costumes to collect. Never have I found joy in simply moving a character around. This is a must buy, no going around it. That is the general review.

    This is the personal review:
When I was young, my family owned a WII and a DS. we had a collective amount of about 10 games for each system. The most fun i had was playing Mario Kart and Wii sports, and that was about it. We eventually sold our Wii, and for 5 years, that was the last time I played a Mario game. Then one day, I was in school and I was looking for computer games to kill the time. I eventually found this game called "Super Mario World". I was like "Super Mario World? What's this? It's probably just some dumb fan game." But it was unblocked, so I thought "why not?" and I played it on a web emulator. (I didn't know at the time) After that I found the game really enjoyable, but a bit challenging. Then, I found Super Mario 64 on my free time, downloaded an emulator and rom, and played. Again, it was fun, but I could tell it wasn't aging fine, and it took me a while to realize I could just play via controller (Don't play 3d games on keyboard). After both those games, I begged my parents to get a Switch, so that I could play Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild, and also Super Mario Odyssey when it came out. In august, I got the Switch and 2 months later, the game that inspired this review. As I am typing this i am tear driven, not because I returned the game, but because playing this game has made me realize how much I missed out when I was younger. Everything in this game makes me feel like I'm 6 again, when I felt invincible and never worried about anything. That's why I've written this review 6 months after the games release. The exploration is probably the best part about this game, but there was never a boring part at any point. This game is so fun in-fact, that it has inspired me to start off on the creation of my own games.
Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps Mario Odyssey is just a passing Fad, and in a few years it'll start to age like its predecessors before it. But in my eyes, this game is a timeless masterpiece, and nothing can change that

Na minha opinião, só o fato de ser possível controlar os inimigos já torna esse jogo um dos melhores jogos do Mario, senão o melhor, de todos os tempos.

Too many moons are the same, however the world design is great, and I love how beautiful everything looks. Asides from similar moons, this game is amazing. I don't feel it deserves a 10, but it certainly deserves a 9.

Its polished, works well, and the joy cons make the game feel so unique and work perfectly! MASTAPIECE Expand

This game is so amazing, I believe people over hyped the wrong game when BOTW and Odyssey were announced. I think that Super Mario Odyssey should get praised more for its open world style based game. Each world felt completely different from the last. It kept me coming back to see what kingdom I would be going to next! If you have a switch and you DON'T have this game BUY IT!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mario Odyssey is truly a Mario game for the ages. Definitely a must have for any Switch owner, and a system seller for those who don't. Being Nintendo the game looks amazing, great detail and vibrant colours make this a very unique Mario game. It also has very unique levels for a 3d platformer; you go to a black and white hat world, to a mechanical jungle, to a japenese fortress, to the moon! The character Cappy introduces a really clever gameplay style. Capturing enemies is fun and every capture is used in an interesting way. There are so many moves and manoeuvres to explore the great levels. The bosses are also pretty good for Mario, special mention to the Broodal mech and final bowser fight. In conclusion an amazing start for Mario on the switch. Let’s hope it just gets better from here. Expand

My favorite game of all time, Super Mario Odyssey is here! keep in mind, this review is coming from a kid. Now, one thing I want to mention. Everybody says this game is too easy, but why? Everybody says this game is too easy, but why? I just don't get it. If you think this game is easy, well, make it harder on yourself! There are so many different moons in each kingdom it's insane! If you are going for the easiest moons, and the least amount of moons possible, then it's your fault that the game is easy! All you need to do is go and force yourself to find those more difficult moons!
The music in this game is absolutely flawless. I wouldn't say BOTW status there, but the music really matched well with the environment. I always felt like I was "in it".
Gameplay mechanics? Perfect. Cappy adds a whole new level to this wide, expansive game, and really makes it more fun to move around. The controls never feel like they are slipping in your hands, and Mario just moves so well that even if you are going around, collecting Moons that you've already gotten, you still have fun doing it! I literally wander around kingdoms for no apparent reason, just because I love moving Mario so much.
Oh, and can't forget about the post game content. No spoilers here, but just to say, there is infinite post game content. With added secrets, added stages, Koopa Freerunning, and now even Luigi's Balloon World, you will never get bored!
And, just all of the throwbacks to the old Mario games, like 64, and even a surprising amount of Sunshine, there is infinite nostalgia for you to crunch down on, like a never ending feast.
Honestly, just everything about this wide, open-world game makes me want to never put it down. 10/10.

Well, I think pretty much everything has already been said about this game. It's Mario at his absolute best. Razortight controls, beautiful varied worlds, tons and TONS of Moons to collect, the typical Mario/Nintendo charme, nostalgic 8 and 64-bit throwbacks, an amazing new gameplay mechanic in form of Cappy... P.S. I find the bad reviews here to be hilarious. These are people who also give BotW a ZERO and Batman vs. Superman a TEN. Go figure.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
