This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game, but a few flaws (and the extreme frustration of Darker Side) made me give it a 9.

    Cons:
    1: Difficulty
Now, I had no problems with how the game is too easy and I think that it was a medium challenge (but I am slightly sad that there aren't higher difficulties, but most Mario games don't have them, so I ignore this) but then Darker Side has to come and frustrate me beyond belief with no checkpoints and a pretty difficult challenge.
    2: inconsistencies:
I had a few small problems with this through my playthrough, like how I throw the cap, hold Y and dive but I don't dive, or how I clipped through a wall as one of those cloud things in the Snow Kingdom (or the Ice Kingdom, I forgot its name) when the other side of the wall that it was part of was fine. Honestly, these barely impacted me, but I decided to mention them anyways.

    Pros:
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.: Basically everything else:

It is an understatement to say that I loved this game. The art style, the music, the gameplay, and the content level (most importantly the gameplay) were all things that made me come back for weeks after I got the game with the Switch along with Splatoon 2 (I never played Splatoon 1, and Splatoon 2, or Spla2n as I jokingly call it, is also great) and also get more games for the Switch, like Arms and Darkest Dungeon!
    Summary:
I really loved the game and you should get it.

However! I should note that this is one of the few Mario games I would recommend not going for 100% unless you absolutely want to. Some Power Moons are almost impossible to find near the end of the game and you shouldn't have to ruin the experience with frustration right at the end.

That being said, Mario Odyssey is the only reason you need to pick up a Nintendo Switch! It has the most replayability of any Mario game to date with no playthrough guaranteed to be the same. It's a blast to play and the graphics are amazing. That's really all you can ask for in a game. I'd rank it as my second favorite Mario game behind Mario Galaxy 2.

My only critique would be the satisfaction of getting moons dropped a bit halfway through my journey to Bowser. Some of them are just laying around. Some more effort to get them (more akin to the Mario 64 stars) would bring about more joy in obtaining them. The post-game really picks up the difficulty though and completely saves it for me. And it's probably the best looking Mario game I've personally ever played. But the gameplay here is your standard Mario stuff. Find the Star, or Moon in this game's case, collect enough of them to fight Bowser for at least the 50th time, and then spend a crazy amount of time trying to collect all 999(!) moons in the game to prolong the experience. Thankfully the game is very fun, even if the controls arent as tight as I'd like for them to be at certain points. Mario has a ton of new moves to keep himself in the air for longer but things get very tough when the more precise jumps now just don't seem to have the expertly crafted precision that a few previous games have had in the past. It can make getting all of the moons a bit tougher when some of them require such precise timing and jumps to even have a chance of getting them.
At the end of the day however, this is still a Mario game, and the exact game that will sell even more Switch systems going forward. Nintendo has really hit a home run with how they've let the first 6 months or so of the system develop and it'll be even harder to find them going forward now. People will find this game very enjoyable, even if the 3D Mario games have become a bit stagnant in how they go about their business. But I guess if it's not broke, then there's no need to fix it for Nintendo. And, with there now being 1 Mario game for every 4 Switches sold only 3 days after launch, the money talks in this situation.

A perfect game for younger games, leaves a little to be desired for older ones in search of some more difficulty, I think they could have made the bosses a little more difficult but I understand they wouldn't want to alienate younger gamers who own the switch and older gamers can find that difficulty in indie titles.

The game also has a pretty good storyline with Mario's New friend the Hat, and plenty of collectibles with the moons and purple coins in all the different worlds. Collecting the coins to unlock different outfits and treasures is sure to provide plenty of end-game content for those complaining the game is too short. While I don't think Mario Odyssey deserves a 9 (and a 10 I think is all but impossible on this platform) an 8 is where it truly sits and is definitely the best entryway to Switch gaming for gamers of all ages and backgrounds.

Probably one of the most best looking game on the switch so far next to Breath of the Wild so far, and on the cusp of Doom which looks like it will be one of the best looking games this year out on the switch.

The game starts out with the cliche of Bowser kidnapping the princess so she can become his bride, in a snazzy white outfit. As Mario you meet Cappy, a ghost like possessed hat that takes the remnants of your trashed Mario hat and becomes a copy of it, with possessable powers allowing you to throw your cap and take over enemies.

From there You take a ship of the Hat people called the Odyssey, and travel from world to world, running after Bowser and his gang of wedding planners as they steal a ring, boquet of Flowers, the perfect dress.

The game runs at a clean 60 frames per second, in 1080p Odyssey, the Switch pushes itsself to the limit which is a great thing for the game and also disappointing for switch owners who were hoping for even better looking game in the future.,

The sound in this game is incredible, some of my favorites being the Wooded Kingdom jazzy soundtrack for the Mario 64 Water level inspired Lake Kingdom.

As far as I am concerned, this game is a 9/10, the only thing that would make it a perfect 10 would be a little more difficulty.

It may be a bit self indulgent in certain areas, but for a series with this kind of stature, you can be assured it's earned. Every level is so densely packed, so encouraging, and so rewarding. Around every nook and cranny there's bound to be more moons to snuff out, and coming across them seemingly never gets old.

Since everybody has already gone on for days about everything great about this game, I'll spend a little time on some of the complaints I have:
-there's more than 850 moons in the game, but I'd say only 400 of them can be found doing worthwhile and truly activities that involve acrobatics or platforming or something else of that nature, whereas the rest are found doing things that aren't particularly exciting to challenging, such as light fetch questing, or jump roping, or looking at paintings, or throwing your hat onto things, etc. Collecting every moon is optional, so it never really gets in your way, but there are soooooooo many moons to collect, and less than half of the moons you can collect are collected doing the exciting stuff.
-It is a really easy game. And that's fine. But of the 400 moons that you get doing the truly fun and exciting stuff, only around 20 of those moons are collecting doing anything genuinely challenging, such as that "darker side of the moon" portion at the end, which is the most one of the wonderfully enraging platforming sequences in any Mario game, and it just seems to stretch on forever, and it's so rewarding when you finally finish it. But there's only on sequence like that. I would've honestly liked their to be a few. Maybe not a few that long and frustrating, but it would have been nice to get more than just one prolonged sequence that tests the acrobatic skills you'll need to acquire from playing through the game.
-There isn't much replay value. I found plenty of replay value in Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, because basically all of the stars are collected doing fun acrobatic platforming or boss fighting with varying degrees of difficulty, but I don't see myself replaying Odyssey anytime soon, because only just less than half of the moons are collected doing fun stuff, the rest were fun to collect at the time because of the joy of discovery and figuring out what I need to do in each area to get new moons, but now that I know what I have to do, replaying it would just be busywork, whereas replaying through platforming sequences (which is what Super Mario Galaxy is based around), is genuinely fun to replay.

But other than those fairly minor complaints, Odyssey is honestly some of the most fun I've ever had with any video game. I was tempted to give it a ten, because there is no single part of it that feels cumbersome, it's all a job to play from beginning to end, but I opted not to, just because I don't really see much replay value.

When was the last time you could say you beat a Mario game in one weekend? This is a fairly short adventure. Considering the number of games released on the same weekend as this one, that could be a good or bad thing. On the other hand, you could beat Zelda fairly quickly as well and still have a lot to do afterwards, so maybe Nintento is following that same "playground" philosophy.

It was also kind of repetitive. Get to a kingdom, defeat it's boss, which opens up the kingdom so you can explore and find more moons. A couple of the boss fights are repeated too. The boss fights are also kind of easy, and since I normally hate boss fights, I had no problem with that.

The game blows its best kingdom about half way through, and nothing after that except the final stage can really compete. It's a level that felt like a grand finale, which makes me wonder if they shifted things around post-development.

Its very easy as compared to other Mario games. If you try to 100% the first kingdom, you basically get enough moons to sail right through the next kingdoms. Nothing really feels earned. Even some of the trickier platforming areas can be "cheated" with no penalty... In Mario 64, every door you opened felt earned, Mario Odyssey just lets you blast through them.

Saying that all that, this isn't my favorite Mario game, but it was still fun. It felt like a celebration of The Mario games even paying tribute to his origins. You discover a lot of elements and characters from previous games. I still felt compelled to explore and find Moons. You'll get a lot of ah-ha! moments as you play.

There was still a little satisfaction of finding those hidden moons that years of Mario gave me the instincts to find. Pushing up against walls, or trying to jump up above the screen to a secret ledge were second nature. Even when you're done, you still have tons of moons to find and more "mini kingdoms" to unlock.

So that's why I'm giving this an 8. It's not perfect. I doubt I'll remember it much once I'm done with it. It's still fun, but it doesn't quite achieve the magic that Mario 64 set the standard for years ago. I still recommend you pick it up, as it is a must-have for Switch owners.

It is the old classic Mario story, Bowser kidnapped princess Peach and Mario is there for her rescue. To accomplish that, you must search for moons. Well and there are lot's of moons. I really thought that I already found many of them, but than realized that just in this "world"/"level" there were 69 moons ... and you only need a fraction of them to continue the story.
And that the biggest flaw of the game in my opinion. Yes you can try to get them all but there are so many that you get the feeling they were just positioned so you have to do something after the story is over. It's more or less like getting all the flags in the old Assassins Creed game. It just isn't fun after you got 40 in the current world. Yes there are different worlds that also have many moons, but at some point the fun getting them is just over.
It's a good game, but not as good as the hype promised.

By all means, it's still a good game with some great ideas, but having finished it I can't think of one kingdom I actually loved and couldn't wait to play again, or one (pleasantly) memorable piece of music--which is a first for a Mario game, for me anyway. Some music didn't fit the scene well at all (Seaside, I'm looking at you), and I found the various shops and items to be needless. Why would I want to buy all this crap for the inside of my ship that you see for about 5 minutes total?

Still, a good game. Just not in the same league as Mario 64 or Galaxy. People need to chill.

It's by no means an open world game but at the same time you can freely explore where ever you like ! I love this fact, and every inch is filled with secret and interesting things to explore! I was worried about this game being too easy, and while the main game (going from the start to the end of the story) is very very easy the secrets and everything make it a little hard! So I believe you'll have fun regardless!

The plot is well...... pretty awful.... More than awful.... I guess Nintendo isn't just good with stories :p (only played 3 of their games though I'm a new fan!)

Overall the game is amazing and feels kinda magical :3 I mean I don't know why I enjoyed it so much :3 But I just did a lot! this has been the case for the many Nintendo games I've played lately :3 (well I've played 3....)

Some of the music here is also top-notch, with the Cascade Kingdom music being a highlight.

My only criticisms (fairly minor) with it are that Power Moons (replacing Power Stars and Shine Sprites from previous games) are almost everywhere, thus making it feel like less of an accomplishment when you receive one. Whereas games like Super Mario 64 awarded Power Stars for completing sometimes lengthy missions, here, you're given Power Moons where you'd likely find 1-Up Mushrooms in other games. Also, there is an odd lack of music in some areas.

Ultimately though, I think these criticisms more come down to personal preference, so Super Mario Odyssey still gets a 10 from me. It's a fantastic adventure and highly recommended to any Switch owner.

After clearing the story mode, I am now going back and getting more stars but I am feeling like its a chore and not fun. Having said that while I love Mario Odyssey, I personally think its missing several things to the game - creativity! I loved the Galaxy series much more because the each of the planets offered a different perspective and challenge. This seemed more like the same with different setup - Fire, Ice, Water, and etc. I enjoyed this Mario but I don't think it its a Masterpiece that everyone is calling it. I think the Galaxy series was way more fun and challenging! The story in the Galaxy was so much better too! This game seemed a little to basic and entry level for Mario players except the DARK Moon!

Story - 7 - Lack thereof. Could have had more characters (Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Toad) to play a more important part in the game
Controls - 6 - the controls is the reason why I die most of the time. The camera is not fixed but it should be able to determine how far or away much easier from certain things.
Gameplay - 8 - seemed almost the same for each world using the magic hat. It's gets a little old. I wished they pushed more toward having different characters and their abilities to help Mario on his quest.
Graphics 9 - great graphics and 60 frames is great both on TV and Handheld
Music - 9 - Wished they had more of it!
    Overall - 8

It seemed as though they were running out of ideas and so they just rushed the star idea to place them everywhere. MORE IS NOT BETTER! And wished they did more on the story and interaction of each characters. I think the professional reviewers aren't being really honest if they have played all of the Mario games this is definitely not the best. Having played all of the main Mario games I can see the differences and creativity in each. The "magic hat" while it was fun I think they over played it too long and shouldn't be the entire game.

The costumes as someone else mentioned, while they are nice and fun to look, but weren't integral part in the game! They could have easily made the costumes important to the game mechanics which I agree could have helped break the "HAT" trick idea. I felt that the hat was a great idea but it was over used and wished they would the outfits play a part into the game!!

I think Nintendo doing great things and love my Switch, but this is just not a Masterpiece as the Galaxy Series are! And to be honest its definitely NOT best in the Mario series and people are over exuberant about playing another Mario game and the reason they are raving about it, But after the dust settles they will realize that the Galaxy, Sunshine, and Mario N64 games were much better in design and creativity.

I like that I don't have to exit and re-enter to get another power moon. I don't like how cheap they are to get. In 64 and Sunshine you had semi-elaborate plots playing out for each shine, and other shines you could get as a side objective. Power moons are just rewards for doing obscure tasks around the kingdom.

Broodals were fun the first time around, boring the second time, and annoying the third time. Why recycle the same fight THREE separate times? Defeat all four of them, rinse and repeat. Nothing changes.

The soundtrack is forgettable for the most part, but there are a few good tracks. Mulitplayer mode is disappointing. Playing as Cappy is boring for Player 2 and makes the game less intuitive for PLayer 1. In terms of difficulty, Odyssey isn't particularly difficult. There are no lives. Whenever you "die", you lose coins. There were a few tricky sections, but for the most part Odyssey wasn't extremely challenging. But that's not a bad thing at all. It’s your standard Modern Mario game; you run, you jump, you kill little mushroom people under the command of a giant fire-breathing-demon tortoise in the confines of a claustrophobic level roughly three and a half jumps in length. And yet, there is something about the atmospheric sound track, brightly colored visuals, and happy go lucky shouting of the small Italian plumber from Japan.
The game clearly draws inspiration from Super Mario 64 with multiple hub levels that you travel through, collecting enough Power Stars – er Moons in this one for… some reason? – to move to the next level. I wasn’t a fan when Nintendo did this with Super Mario 64 and I often find myself wondering why everyone is so crazy for the old 64 Classic. Maybe it is because I took my rose-colored glasses off about the time Nintendo re-released Major’s Mask for the 3DS, but other that the evocation of childhood nostalgia, I don’t have anything positive to say about games from the N64 Era.

And yet, even though Odyssey is following the same formula as it’s N64 counterpart, I find myself enjoying it immensely. I do wish the game lasted a little bit longer, all in all the story runs you roughly 2-3 hours with the rest of the replayability coming from the Power Moon Collect-athon that follows. While it’s fun to go around trying to find all the Moons you can, I also feel a little jaded at the fact that there wasn’t more to do. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting a 30+ hour long story line typical of a JRPG, it just feels lacking. Considering the hype that was built up for Super Mario Odyssey since its initial announcement, I feel more should have been done to increase the length of the game.

Although the Worlds of Odyssey are small they are packed with things to do. Each nook and cranny are filled with different things to do in order to collect the Power Moons. So much so that you might almost consider it oversaturated, but at the same time; the oversaturation of things to do makes up for the lack of room to move and run.

I think the thing that has drawn me into the game the most is the music and sound design. Although the sound of Mario triple jumping can become a bit tiresome after you’re required to do it 13 times in a row; there is no doubt that it is an iconic sound and Odyssey would have suffered without it. My hat is off (ha) to Nobuyoshi Suzuki on his work. Each song for each world and each event feels unique while also drawing inspiration from previous titles to not only give you the feeling of a Mario game but the feeling of something exciting and new.

I really don’t know what else I can say about Super Mario Odyssey other than this; The game is by no means a disappointment, but it is a little disappointing – if that made sense? I went into Super Mario Odyssey expecting a Mario game and in all honesty, that’s what I got. I just wish that with all the hype, all the buildup leading me into Odyssey there was more to it. I do still recommend it to any fan of Mario, Nintendo, or the Switch; but I’m not sure that I can recommend it to anyone else. In addition to that, if you were thinking about buying yourself a Switch, just to enjoy Super Mario Odyssey (like I did with Zelda) I’m not sure I can recommend doing that either. The game is good, but I don’t feel it’s good enough to drop a couple hundred dollars on.

    - All of the “cap-tured” enemies control very well and add a lot of variety to gameplay and puzzle solving
    - There are no hard game overs so making small platforming mistakes that result in death will only cost players a handful of coins
    - The addition of costumes is great and it’s nice that they don’t have unique attributes, otherwise you’d have to run back and forth from the Odyssey to complete different puzzles
    - Everything about the ending sequence on the moon
    - There’s plenty to explore and collect after the story is over and there is a ton of incentive to continue the journey after the credits roll
    - Great Soundtrack; Completely Orchestrated
    - The hidden photos make great use of the Switch’s screenshot feature

    Mixed:
    - The story is lacking a lot of charm that other titles brought to the series … but that ending sequence on the moon made up for it all brought it all back!
    - You can blast through the story in about 4 or hours if you really wanted to but there’s so much to collect along the way; players should take their time
    - You can only get certain moons after the story ends, which they don’t make very clear; on the other hand, players can see the worlds grow before their eyes, which makes them even bigger than they initially appear
    - There are over 800 moons to collect but a lot of them can just be purchased from shops post game for 100 coins each

    Bad:
    - Some actions can only be triggered by motion controls and they can’t be adjusted in the options
    - Some worlds are only used for a single boss fight which was disappointing considering the potential of their themes

Absolutely excellent. Mario Odyssey's hat "Cappy" adds new jump mechanics and the ability to play as various enemies. It was simply delightful the whole way through, and the Balloon World is not only a great addition of gameplay, but also grants much-needed coins for those striving for the 100% mark. A great Mario title, and a must-play for any Switch owner.

In terms of gameplay, the game reminds me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: there are tons of puzzles and challenging fights that even experienced gamers may have trouble getting through. What makes Odyssey stand out from other Mario games is that it is completely open-world and you don't spend the entire game going level to level. You have to figure out where to go and how to get there, and it's not always obvious. The other main thing that separates Odyssey from previous titles is the map. There are so many different worlds, each with decently large maps. Also, each world has a store with exclusive souvenirs to decorate the Odyssey. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece and I would highly recommend it.

CLASSIC MARIO! Builds off Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy to be an amazing true mario game while also having a lot of fresh new stuff. The main storyline is pretty short, and not very hard. Going back and trying to get every moon is where you'll get the most time in-game.

    GRACIAS NINTENDO.

Each Nintendo console has a flagship Mario game, and usually is one of the best games for the system. Odyssey is no disappointment, certainly going to be considered one of the best Mario games and by extension, best video games period.

Odyssey is not a "hard" game or deep. You have your basic Mario premise, Bowser has kidnapped Peach and it's Mario's job to rescue her going world to world chasing Bowser (in this one Bowser is going to marry Peach, which is new). But the defining new game mechanic is Mario's hat. Originally Mario wore a hat so they didn't have to animate hair on the NES, but now his hat allows him to attack enemies and more importantly, take them over! By throwing your hat at a Goomba, a Hammer Bro, a Fish, a freaking Dinosaur Mario becomes said enemy, able to use all of their abilities.

It's by this mechanic that Mario opens up new sections of the Worlds, defeats the bosses, and you have a dozen different ways to traverse the World. There's no linear method to beat the World. Sure, there's goals, but you can hop over the walls, go around the back of the mountain, climb the stairs, whatever you want! The controls on Mario's quintisential jumping and platforming skills are very tight, though somewhat annoying that they are semi-motion controls (I'd prefer not at all), but that's my only gripe with the game.

It's a beautiful, fun adventure, easy enough for a beginner/amateur to beat, but challenging to the expert if you want to get EVERY Power Moon. It's a game that every Nintendo Switch player needs to play, and is almost worth getting the console just to play, but certainly the Switch is worth it just for Mario and Zelda.

This game is an amazing work of art. Each world is lively and enjoyable with TONS of collectibles throughout. The main story line was cute, but really short. That's why I'm giving it a 9 instead of a 10. I love all the thought that was put into each Kingdom. Each kingdom is vastly different than the next which kept the game interesting. I will continue to enjoy this game for many more hours.

I, instead, had low expectations because ever since 2010, I've felt the franchise had experienced a serious downfall, and my hype was on Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade 2. Instead of seeing a masterpiece in the trailers, I just saw a 5 or 6/10 game, but decided to give it the benefit of doubt, and not jump to immediate conclusions. Eventually, I got my hands on the Switch, and Super Mario Odyssey as well, and decided to give it a chance. And as you can see by this 8/10, I believe it's pretty clear that the game largely exceeded my initial expectations, but it still left something to be desired.

Firstly, the game marks the first time Mario's cap serves any purpose besides being part of Mario's design. In this game, the cap is an entity named Cappy, who assists Mario on his journey to save Princess Peach, because Tiara (Cappy's sister) was taken by Bowser as well. Cappy can do multiple things in this game, such as allowing Mario to control other beings or acting as some sort of platform for Mario to extend his jumps. The game features several areas (kingdoms) to explore. In them you can collect Power Moons, which are required to advance in the main story. There's so many Power Moons in the game that it can take a long time to gather them all, depending on how much time you dedicate to the game. I also love the visuals in this game (best-looking Mario title I've played), as well as those segments where you become 2D Mario in segments that resemble the original Super Mario Bros. back in 1985. And it's also cool how you can customize your ship and get special outfits for Mario.

However, I have several complaints. The story is pretty much the same as always. The difficulty is low for most of the time, except in some Bonus rooms or in Boss Rematches. It's cool how Mario can wear several types of costumes, but I wish they served any other purpose aside from allowing you to get access to some rooms, like having some sort of special ability, a strength and a weakness. The bosses are awesome-looking, but nearly all of them are underwhelming in dificulty, even Bowser himself. The music is very forgettable, except for maybe 2 or 3 tracks. The motion controls in the game feel so forced. Cappy may give a lot of gameplay options, but character-wise, he's the worst companion Mario has ever had. And Nintendo seems to have attempted to create a group of villains to replace the Koopalings, but they failed terribly: the Broodals. All of them are highly dislikeable, have extremely easy boss fights and are so generic and boring.

Super Mario Odyssey is a good game to a certain extent. Sure, it exceeded my 5/10 expectations, but it still isn't the first game I'd recomend parents to give their son/daughter for Christmas with a Nintendo Switch. However, the game is fun, and you will probably enjoy it all the way.

I am usually a lot cheaper than that lol. But Super Mario Odyssey was definitely a system seller for me and the first Nintendo system I have owned since the SNES back in the mid 90's. The last time I played a Mario game was to its end was Super Mario 3 and I guess as I got into my teenage years my tastes for games started to change so I left Mario and Nintendo behind. But now I have a big boy job and want to own anything I can afford so here we go I got me the Switch Odyssey Edition.

The first thing I noticed right off the bat was how tight the controls feel even with my pro controller. At no point did I ever even think about input lag and Nintendo should be commended for making this a priority. The detail in the world is just incredible given the hardware limitations. So much detail in every corner of the map. Mechanically this one of the most clever and well thought out games I have ever played. Every move that Mario and his captured enemies can perform has a purpose and the platforms are designed based on these abilities and not the other way around. The story is simple yet fun. It is not a punishing platformer but rather enjoyable to discover and explore. I fell in love with the 2d sections that really brought me back to the Mario that I loved back in the day and these sections felt great to play as well. My favorite part of the game was the 2d platforming section in New Donk. What a nostalgia trip. Lastly, I would be doing the game a disservice if I did not mention the amazing soundtrack.

I only have few criticisms but they do bring this all-time great down just peg in my book. After you get through the main story the game does become a bit of a grind. Really all there is left to do is collect remaining moons, get new outfits and replay boss battles (that were slightly above average to begin with). As you collect more moons you unlock the ability to go to the dark side of the moon and the darker side of the moon. These are just boss gauntlets. I hate boss gauntlets in any game I just feel like too much of the focus was on the main story and left us wanting more in the post game but did not deliver.

With that all being said this is still one for the ages and definitely one I could see myself replaying down the line. It really makes me want to go collect older Nintendo systems and play all the Mario games that I missed over the years. 9/10 Amazing.

There's a few objective problems with the game that nobody can disagree with, like the lack of a viable control scheme that doesn't include motion controls despite all of the duplicate button functionality. Makes the harder content unplayable or overly frustrating with the pro controller or playing in handheld mode. Even with the joycons, the motion isn't reliable for some actions, and the analog sticks are so sensitive at high speeds, some of the moons are more difficult than using a pro controller where the sticks are more subtle. This is big enough to take any game out of 10/10 contention. I feel like if a reviewer only plays on a television using the joycons separated from each other, they will never understand the pains with the other setups, and that's a very big problem for a console that is supposed to be as flexible as the switch and this is their flagship title.

I also think there are valid criticisms about the lack of variety and mechanics, as well as how padded out the game feels, although each person will have a different opinion of that. Once the novelty wears off, I can't help but think that Galaxy is just a better game.

I think this is more like 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

Super Mario Odyssey is as close to perfect as any game can be. After hitting 100% completion, I have to say it's one of the best games I've ever played, and would have been my game of the year for 2017 if not for Breath of the Wild.

What makes it so good? To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games.

    What makes it so good?

To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games. There's something magic about being able to become practically every enemy you encounter and learning how to use their unique characteristics to your advantage. However, even without that fantastic new addition, the basics are all incredible. Movement is fluent, and the quest to find all 880 moons, and the many regional coins hidden in each kingdom, is fun - they make the game a lot bigger than I expected and the challenge presented by the sheer volume and creativity of the moons (which will surely be appreciated by completionists) kept me playing for more than 55 hours (the addictive minigames and leaderboards helped to bolster that playtime). After seeing everything the game has to offer, I was happy with the varying difficulty. Furthermore, Odyssey has an excellent tone, never taking itself too seriously, whilst being incredibly charming. There's a certain polish applied to everything in the game that keeps it consistent and keeps it feeling alive. Every single kingdom is impeccably well designed, from the soundtrack to the characters and creatures that live there. There isn't a single forgettable location, with it even making something memorable and interesting out of snow and water levels. I don't think I could pick a favourite nor the worst - every kingdom is truly special (however, I think it's only fair to give the stellar Metro Kingdom a mention). One of my favourite things was to discover what each kingdom had to offer, because of how distinct each is from the last. There's so much to see, and its a pleasure to be able to get absorbed in the excellent soundtrack and interact with the brilliant environments.

It's fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike it - the variety is so intense that it's hard to imagine that there isn't something here for everyone. It's far better than any other Mario game I've ever played, and far surpasses the likes of Super Mario 64. This is one of those games that is so good that people will be using it as a benchmark for years; it's raised the standards for modern platformers and collectathons.

Every single moment spent playing Odyssey is a moment well spent - this is an objectively perfect game that is deserving of it's universal praise, and of it's name. Odyssey, meaning epic journey, couldn't be a better fit.

Nintendo games are the best. Mario Odyssey is just flat out fun. The worlds are built at a good pace and have you feeling good. The throw back parts are a blast. Cant wait to play it all the way through. 9/10

WARNING: Spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.
So, where do I even begin with this game?
Super Mario Odyssey is, by far, one of, if not the best games currently out on the Nintendo Switch. Retaining the same linear-open-world-style feel as Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 and 2, it more than improves on the format with a host of new game mechanics, a lot of stages and collectibles that'll have you reeling for hours, and one very horrible obstacle at the end. Well, I say horrible, but very difficult. I am, of course, referring to the Darker Side of the Moon, and not the regular Moon Kingdom, with its incredibly long course, incorporating everything the game has thrown at you once more. But, I'm losing track, and I'm going off on a tangent. The motion controls provided by the Switch's "Joy-Con" controllers also compliment the game well, with the throwing gestures feeling almost second-nature very quickly.
I mean, sure, the game has its flaws, such as broken online gameplay in the Balloon World and Koopa Freerunning minigames, with hyperspeed mods ruining the course leaderboards for Freerunning, and impossible-to-reach balloons in the Balloon World.
Overall, the game has a simple but exciting feel about it, and is definitely a must-buy for any Switch owners. If you enjoy a good open-world platformer with simple controls and new features that add a new layer to the game, then you are going to love Odyssey. Oh, and don't get me started on the soundtrack. Trust me, you are going to randomly start humming "Jump Up, Super Star" or "Break Free (Lead The Way)" at some point (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). Kate Higgins does an impressive job on vocals, and on voicing Pauline, who finally becomes a major character, as the mayor of New Donk City - the fictional city within the Metro Kingdom.

This is probably my new favorite 3D Mario game. It controls excellently, has a really innovative new mechanic, and - just like most of its predecessors - has excellent level design. I can't put much more without spoiling, but i will say this: get the game. Expand

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
