    I can't fault the production values of this game, everything is top notch. The ability to be able to jump into your enemies works really well. Level designs are clever and imaginative. The way they incorporate the 8 bit Mario is also done very well. Cappy is a good addition but in two player (though he's not as fun as you think he might be). So why only a 7? Well, for me the later Mario games (Odyssey, Galaxy, etc) although very cleverly done, can't escape the fact that platform games in this day and age are, to be blunt, quite tedious. It's a game genre from forty years ago, and for me is just too simplistic. I'd much rather be playing a fast sonic level, or shooter like fortnite, or rpg like the wticher. Nintendo have done brilliantly well to keep Mario as high profile as he is, but at the end of the day jumping on top of things is really quite boring.… Expand

    First let's start of as i said before the game is way way way too easy and should have had some difficulty options in order to liven up the gameplay a bit a lot of the enemies at time just feel there to pad the world rather than be an obstacle to Mario.

    Moons . . . too many damn moons what is Nintendos issue lately? with putting way too many collectibles in their games to a point that it starts to feel more like tedium than a fun aspect, I collected almost all of the original moons in the game and a lot of them felt a joy to get they were often hidden well or required some puzzle or platforming to reach after the game however . . . You essentially double all of the moons by touching moon cubes and not only do they mark all of them on your map but a majority of them are just there no work, no puzzle, no platforming It begs the question of why? The other issue with this being you don't need to collect them all to progress the story so what felt like quite lengthy playtime from me i quickly came to realise would be a couple of hours maximum if others weren't too bothered about the collectibles

    My last gripe is with the costumes I understand that we have Cappy so we are supposed to get powers and abilities from others but at the same time all those moons we collected mean nothing more than just cosmetics =/ they should have added slight and subtle effects like the most obvious make the underwater areas suit allow you to swim slightly faster etc. some of them are cool throwbacks but other than that they just seem a tad pointless.

    Either way overall Mario Odyssey should be picked up for the switch it's a great looking and controls superbly I do wish we had more worlds rather than moon cubes so i could have enjoyed spending more time in it's worlds but regardless this is totally a must buy    … Expand

    If you are expecting this to be like Super Mario 64. Then you will be disappointed. You will go a linear path, kingdom to kingdom, almost like Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Mario 64 feels more open world then Odyssey. And you cant sneak in this mario game. i loved to do that in mario 64. it felt more dynamic. Odyssey is too easy . And one thing i feel is frustrating. is when you haveIf you are expecting this to be like Super Mario 64. Then you will be disappointed.     Thought is was ok. Sure there's a lot of new Mario abilities but they're not all necessarily fun.
    I was never desperate to keep playing or jump back into it, & found myself just wanting to finish for the sake of finishing.

    I really like the game but it has one BIG flaw, like many others have mentioned. The game is waaay too easy. Dying with the only penalty of losing 10 coins, I mean for real? The bosses are lauglably easy as well and I havent lost even once against the first few. It's as if the difficulty was aimed toward 6 year olds. Also you only need a very small amount of power moons to progress to theI really like the game but it has one BIG flaw, like many others have mentioned. The game is waaay too easy. Pero no es para nada comparable con las 49 galaxias de mario Galaxy 2.

    No siento que sea un juego malo, para nada, pero no un 8.9 siento que le falto mucho contenido más que su predecesores. Tenia mucho para explotar, aunque los lugares son re jugables hasta obtener TODO, se siente muy corto y pequeño.

Its kind hard to call this a Mario game sometimes. This game has some really cool gimmicks, but it ends up feeling wide and shallow. This is definitely pretty good value for money, and no where near deserving the scores it gets. TheThis game is highly overrated like Botw.     This could have been the greatest Mario game of all time, and maybe it actually is, but there are a few big issues that keep it from being a flawless masterpiece. As I am a pretty experienced Mario player (having 100%ed every 3D game with the exception of 64 and Sunshine), allow me to sum them up.

    1) Controls The core controls are wonderful.     1) Controls
    The core controls are wonderful. They are on par with - if not better than- the magical controls of the Galaxy games. But the forced and awkward motion controls are a huge missed opportunity. They work fine enough and you can comfortably get through the game while ignoring them, but you'll miss out on a few useful cappy moves that keep things moving even more fluently. Having the option to customise the button mapping would have solved this issue.

    2) Length
    You can beat the base game pretty quickly; in my case over the course of a weekend. There's still a lot to do in post game, but it's balanced pretty poorly. I would have preferred a main game that was say 5-10 hours longer, with a shorter and less tedious post game. You could make the argument that this makes secondary playthroughs and speedruns more interesting, but even for those the game is too short for my liking.

    3) Difficulty
    This is the game's biggest problem. If you thought Galaxy 1's main game was easy, this is something else entirely. Even the dedicated platforming challenges can get pretty boring because of the lack of tough segments. There certainly are a few collectibles that require some skill to get, but the overall challenge for me (so far at least) has never really gone beyond "tricky". Even so, the game has a "super handholding mode" you can activate at any time for newcomers to video games. So if you're looking for a hard 3D platformer, well... Maybe give Crash Bandicoot a go.

    Okay so now that's over with let's talk a bit about the fun stuff.

    1) Presentation
    This game is gorgeous. The graphics and art style work together very well to deliver a sight to behold that only gets prettier the further you get in the game. Important to note is that the framerate tends to take a bit of a dive sometimes in New Donk City, but overall it stays at a fairly steady 60 fps.

    2) Level design
    Apart from the relative lack of challenge, I love the level design. There are tons of collectibles everywhere, with a lot of them being hid away very cleverly. Exploring the beautiful worlds is a ton of fun, and even after finding big important items the level doesn't end, so you just keep going for as long as you want. That way the pacing keeps up the entire way through and you're always busy with something.

    Okay, to prevent myself from rambling too much let me try and wrap this up.
    Despite its problems, this is a fun game. You may not find a challenge here, but what you will find is a huge smile on your face from beginning to end. It oozes with the timeless Mario charm, callbacks to his entire career, adorable characters and so much more.

    Switch owners, you definitely don't want to miss out on this one (though I don't really think that will be the case).    … Expand

    I still do not understand the review's scores. It is very short with very little ambition, and it is way too easy. Finished the main story in about 8 hours with a little more than 250 moons, not a bad game, but it looked like just a demo of Super Mario Galaxy...

    I was really really excited for this game. Nothing I love more than a 3D mario game. Sadly it's not quite up to snuff. My main issue is that it's just too easy. Sure they can hide stuff in a level and finding them can be a challenge, but there is very little actual platforming and none of it is particularly challenging. The 'moons' (did we really need to ditch stars?) are so plentifulI was really really excited for this game. Nothing I love more than a 3D mario game. Sadly it's not quite up to snuff. My main issue is that it's just too easy. Sure they can hide stuff in a level and finding them can be a challenge, but there is very little actual platforming and none of it is particularly challenging. The 'moons' (did we really need to ditch stars?) are so plentiful and easily gotten it doesn't feel like an accomplishment.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed. Nintendo marketed this as a big comeback to the old 3D mario style, and since there were now huge kingdoms with several moons (this game's take on stars) I thought it'd be something similar to Super Mario 64, and it feels like the game really tries to cash in on that good ol' 90s nostalgia.
    So, setting the superficial stuff aside (blocky suit and hat, for example) let's see how this game compares to the previous entries.
    64 had 7 stars per level, whereas Odyssey ranges from 30 to 80 per kingdom, give or take. The kingdoms ARE bigger, yes, but the amount of moons doesn't scale accordingly. This means that moons have inherently less value than a star had in previous games.
    In my opinion this has both positive and negative sides: on one hand, the player can be rewarded for finding hidden secrets in the map with something that actually holds value, instead of say, some coins; however, the player doesn't feel as satisfied when getting a particularly hard moon if they are getting one every 2 minutes for doing next to nothing.
    After finishing the game, getting moons seems like a chore, and the 250 and 500 moon rewards are not very fulfilling.
    This leads me to my next complain: hardly ever in this game, did I feel like there was a platforming challenge that actually seemed hard. This is a huge letdown because Mario's movements in this game are an absolute joy to perform, but you never really get a chance to use them for something that makes a difference, besides the occasional golden koopa race.
    And unfortunately, to me the captures seemed like something very gimmicky rather than an actual challenge. Almost every time you need to use a captured monster, the challenge is identifying that you need that capture. Once you take the frog to the place with the high ledge, you get your moon and the deal is done, no platforming skill required.
    The thing that gets me when comparing this game to Galaxy 2 for example, is the fact that upon getting all 250 stars, the game rewarded you with a painfully hard level where you had to apply everything you had learned during the game. It was a brilliant reward to give players who wanted to go the extra mile and doing the 100%.
    Mario Odyssey has two post-game levels: Dark Side of the Moon, a boss rush; and Darker Side of the Moon, a platforming level comparable on the surface to Galaxy 2's Grandmaster Galaxy.
    The problem is that the idea of difficulty for this levels is having them be long (and without checkpoints). They're not difficult, but you can get easily frustrated when after dying you have to repeat everything from the start.
    I had an interesting thought while playing this game. BotW and Odyssey were marketed kind of similarly, as a more open and adventurous game, with a bigger focus on exploration. There's a big problem with this approach for Odyssey, as opposed to Zelda.
    The only tangible rewards you can ever get out of exploration in Odyssey are moons and purple coins. This takes A LOT out of the mystery of exploring the land. In Zelda you can get new armor or weapons with unknown effects, or new ingredients to craft or cook, that's rewarding.
    Another problem with exploration in this game is that there is content locked before the endgame for no apparent reason, and this isn't communicated clearly. When I first began playing and reached Cascade Kingdom, I decided I was going to get every moon in the level before moving to the next one, but then I realized there were moons that were impossible to get, that is, blank spots on the moon list. After beating the game I went back and found out what those moons were: A Peach moon, which is a regular moon given to you by Peach, a couple of underground levels, a second koopa race... I don't understand why this content is locked at the beginning. The game is supposed to give you freedom to explore every kingdom, why don't they just do that? The moons that I had gotten and the layout of the level had become a blur by the time I got back and I had to re familiarize with the level and remember which moons I already had for no good reason.
    Overall I don't think this new approach suits Mario very good, and I hope to see a real comeback to the harder levels of previous games. I hope people start seeing this game for what it is rather than what it looks like, so we get better Mario games down the line.    … Expand

    the game is good but it does not deserve the high rating it is receiving. The game is very reminiscent of super mario 3d world and a bit of super mario 64. The phases are relatively large and a little pointless which makes the player get a little tired and not look for all the items in the stage.

    There are several frame rate drops and it seems that the game does not run at 60fps.

    The game camera is extremely bad. At times it gets in the way and you end up dying depending on what you are doing.

    Anyway ... the game is nice but not for a 10 or 9.7 note ... It was shown a great innovation in Mario with the use of the hat, but in general the mechanics of the game is the same as always and the use of hat is repetitive ... this way, maybe because of the little innovation I noticed, at most it deserves a 7 note ... it's a nice game, modest ... nothing more ... more a fail of the nintendo ...

The game is aimed at younger players as most adults with gaming experience will beat the main story without dying more than a handful of times. The first half of the game is that painstakingly easy. The second half adds some challenge though with collecting numerous moons (a few difficult). Don't expect to find any sortFun, beautiful, 3D plat-former with some new gimmicks thanks to Cappy.     Comment 2: Loved Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, even Super Mario Bros ... but this game can't hold my attention and seems like it was made for very young players. Sad!

    If you have played very much Mario games earlier, then you will sometimes get tired of Mario Oddyssey. I had the kind of fun, but the '' weary feeling '' got into the game quite quickly. It is the same goal when you travel to the places where you go. If you intend to collect ALL the moons, well good luck. Nothing beats Galaxy 2 yet in my opinion

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoy it at first sight. But after two worlds it is bored. Each world is different but at same time is the equal at the previous one. You arrive, search for moons and special coins, and kill the world boss with the same dynamic.
    The history has the same profundity and history that the previous one: save the princess.
    It is a good game, but it’s not a 10’s game.

    I'm giving the game 7 out of 10, because i'm not a Nintendo fanboy, and I acknowledge the existence of other games, that deserve 10 out of 10, and Mario Odysses is definitely not one of them. Mario Odyssey is a fine game. It is fun, but a very repetitive. It uses a lot of mechanics from previous games, and invent just a few new. The main problem of this game, is that if you're notI'm giving the game 7 out of 10, because i'm not a Nintendo fanboy, and I acknowledge the existence of other games, that deserve 10 out of 10, and Mario Odysses is definitely not one of them.     This game was great though it is the same old reground mario game. The only difference is a new hat that lets you posses a mario creature. For a 3D platformer it's pretty great, though there is way to much stuff packed into too little a space. It didn't pull me in like Galaxy or 64 did. This game was way too over hyped.

    Okay, I think most people would say that Nintendo has had a pretty damn amazing 2017: Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Arms, Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and now Mario Odyssey. That's an exclusive lineup of first party titles that any other publisher on earth would kill to have. It's the best year any publisher has had in a very, very long time...perhaps    Umm...how can I put this...?

    Okay, I think most people would say that Nintendo has had a pretty damn amazing 2017: Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Arms, Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and now Mario Odyssey. That's an exclusive lineup of first party titles that any other publisher on earth would kill to have. It's the best year any publisher has had in a very, very long time...perhaps ever. All of those games are excellent, a few of them are game of the year contenders on their own, and Breath Of The Wild...well, I've written a long review where I tried, and failed, to get across in just 5000 characters how good a game it is. For me BotW is the greatest game ever made, so Nintendo would have had an incredible year even if it wasn't for all the other brilliant titles they've released.

    In light of that, in light of the incredible run of form they're on, and in light of just how much I enjoyed the Mario Galaxy games - which are the only 3D mario games that Nintendo really got right - I was expecting...a lot. I bought a Switch for this(I played BotW on my Wii-U in case you were wondering) and I waited to unbox it on the day Odyssey was released and the game came in the post - all because it's an 'event' kind of game.
    It genuinely pains me to say it, and I've been fighting against the feeling for a while now, but this is just nowhere near as brilliant as Galaxy 1 or 2. I'd have a hard time saying if it's as good as Super Mario 3D World. The problems are not that numerous but they are significant:

    - It's too easy. Simple as that. A lot of people have said it, and they're right.

    - The sensation of actually getting a moon is far less rewarding than getting a star(the moons are basically the Odyssey equivalent of stars from previous Marios) in Galaxy 1/2 or SM64. This is because there are over 800(!) of them. If you've played Breath Of The Wild think of it as the equivalent of collecting Koroks and nothing else- Koroks are fun, and they're a mild diversion in BotW, but to structure an entire game around them would not be enjoyable. And it isn't. Allied to that is the fact that some, even most, of the moons are as easy as finding a Korok. This touched on the problem of difficulty again.

    - But the difficulty is probably not the main problem. I could deal with it if it wasn't for the fact that the level design is so...uninspired. For anyone who's played either Mario Galaxy, even if you didn't like it as much ass I did, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to remember some piece of level design that impressed you, something that surprised you. For me those games were full of surprising, original, mind-bowing environments - I remember, for example, a level set in a house, where all the lights went off and a spotlight began moving through the place. As long as you stayed inside the spotlight you were okay but step outside and you died. Not because you couldn't keep up, or some enemy got you in the dark, but because the _only parts of the level that existed were the parts lit by the spotlight_ and if you wandered off you just fell into black nothingness. This allowed for a whole load of clever, on-the-fly challenges as you had to keep up with the spotlight. This was such a stunning level, so breathtakingly original, that I had to rewrite the previous bit three times before I could accurately convey what happened when you played it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in anything I've played so far that comes close to that level, or the many, many ones like it in Galaxy 1 and 2. The license to experiment that came with setting Galaxy in space and zero grav environments is lost in Odyssey, which is just flat progression from island-world to island-world.

    - Which leads me onto the final significant criticism - it's open world, which a lot of people like. Personally I don't think it works for Mario. Or at least Nintendo still haven't managed to make it work. When they put Mario in tight, focused, self-contained levels it is intense and imaginative and they can experiment with the design. There's no filler in the Galaxy games because they don't involve the constant wandering around and backtracking and empty spaces that all open-world games have. I fundamentally disagree with the idea of 3D Mario games being open-world - I think the twitch gameplay and imagination and focus and intensity of 2D Marios, which I grew up on and which I love, is diluted when it's transferred to an open world. The whole ethos of Mario is pure gameplay - it's not exploration and wandering about, and that kind of stuff just doesn't suit Mario, at least not as Nintendo have done it so far.

    There are a plenty of good elements to Odyssey - the controls are very tight and some of the Cappy captures are...fun. And the costumes get a big thumbs up. But fundamentally it is just lacking in the starburst of imagination and breathtaking level design that makes Mario at his best the greatest video game character there is. The setup is that similar of Mario Sunshine which was an absolute ground breaking game in the series, and a much improvement on the big seller Mario 64.
    The special ability to over take enemies like Hammer bro, Goomba, Bullet bill and even a T-Rex...... A FRIGGIN' T-REX!!! An ability introduced into the game makes it really enjoyable to play, and it's good to see from Mario Sunshine that Nintendo EDP have come up with innovative ways to keep Mario fresh with a change of ideas by involving these abilities as apart of a story.

    Now I use the term "story" loosely as Mario doesn't really have a story, well a good one anyway. Now if like me you're thinking "who buys a Mario game for the story?" then I can level with you, but the fact that they have tried to implement a story (and a weak one at that) tells me that they didn't really take in consideration how weak it really was. It's so unnecessary, that you don't even need to pay any attention to it, the ending is only stupid anyway.

    It's far from an amazing game, but if you want fun and easy game time, then this is a certain purchase for you.    … Expand

So to is Super Mario Odyssey. It would be easy to take shots at the low-hanging fruit of where the game fell to tropes and creative inconsistencies, from lifting the plucky and annoyingly explicative sidekick/minder from Zelda's playbook to the jarring artistic conflicts between the PS2 absurdist nightmare of the Luncheon Kingdom, the 360-era uncanny valley of New Donk City (which inexplicably has a cartoonish Mario character as torch-singer-in-chief) and the ripped-straight-from-Final-Fantasy Ruined Kingdom. SMO's problems, however, go deepen than that, straight through in fact to the definition of what makes a Mario game.

    Positioned like the answer to the abortive and much-debated Super Mario 64 sequel, to be fair SMO superficially ticks a few boxes in that regard, namely sandbox worlds, and mission-defined and exploration-based collectibles. That said, to this reviewer, the desperate appeal to casuals and first-timers was on parade virtually from the first moments of the game. Movement control was what one would expect from a modern 3D Mario, which is to say masterfully tight, and in the context of this game criminally wasted by the utter lack of opportunity or demand for precision jumping and platforming. Worse still, any such requirement would have been robbed of the slightest urgency by the lack of the traditional lives system, indeed of any possibility at all of losing the game. Instead, it feigns the pretence of a Sonic Boom-style currency-as-lives faux-penalty that is rendered laughably pointless by the sheer volume of coins that can be accrued with virtually no effort at all.

    Super Mario Odyssey is not a bad game at all, but it is not an especially good game either. It is a thoroughly lower-middle-of-good, baby's first Mario game that is meant unquestionably to appeal to a new, younger audience that has less love for challenges than it does for colourful guided tours whose difficulty curves fall slightly below skimming a EULA on Steam and clicking Next to continue. It will undoubtedly be championed in years to come by those that have sought something, anything, vaguely resembling the success of Nintendo's meteoric domination a generation ago. Already, polls and screeds are ferociously trotted out, generating ledes questioning whether the newcomer has eclipsed the masters of the past. From a visual and mechanical perspective, this cannot be argued nor should it be surprising, the newest iterations of technology are almost always superior. The greatest consideration, however, is the degree to which the game affects the industry as a whole. Super Mario Bros. established the platformer as ultimate genre of its time. Super Mario 64 spawned a decade of powerful and successful mascot-driven 3D platformers. Will there be a resurgence in 3D platformers following on from such a standard bearer as Super Mario Odyssey? If the performances of Yooka-Laylee and A Hat In Time are indicative, almost certainly not. In that context, Super Mario Odyssey, whilst generally (or perhaps vaguely) worthy, is, just as arguably, one more very refined horse buggy for buggy enthusiasts in a world having long since moved on to the automobile.    … Expand

This is compounded by the fact that there are some moves that are LITERALLY NOT AVAILABLE to users who don't use motion controls. Example: You flick the joycon to throw your hat. This works pretty well and when you flick your joycon again in midair it turns the hat into a homing missile. Very handy. So you flick once, and then flick again in midair (same action both times). But if you throw your hat with Y (since you dont want to use motion controls) it throws the hat, but the homing missile option isn't even available unless you actually flick your wrist. it's not like it lets you just press Y again midair. This makes no sense and really hampers a game that truly revolves around its controls and their response. Motion controls, until they can guarantee accuracy at the same levels of button presses need to only be an OPTION in games. Especially in a platformer.

    Next negative: It isn't open world, no matter what you read. The game is split into "kingdoms" (these are just levels). The levels themselves are fairly open with no direction, and there's a fair amount to do in an area after gettin enough moons to move on, but it is decidedly not an open world. I was hoping they would go sort of the direction that the lego games do - open level designs, but also a huge open world with puzzles that is how you traverse to the levels of the game.

    The sounds are great but the graphics are "meh". The game can't manage to run at 1080p for some reason, and has quite low res textures, very similar to the low res textures in BOTW. Disappointing.

    The game is a solid mario product and very fun, the mechanics of gameplay and the different abilities that can be utilized by possessing different creatures is the primary new thing in this mario game. It could have been better, should have been better but still a recommended purchase.

    Don't believe the hype train that says this game is the best game ever. it is a slightly enhanced mario game that follows every mechanic in games before (with the one exception of gaining new abilities by possession, but even this has been partially explored before in this franchise). It's a fun game and very enjoyable but there is very little new here or anything that made me go "wow".    … Expand

    You remember the blue coins from sunshine? Imagine those, but it's the entire game. Probably the most underwhelming 3D Mario game, but it's still pretty fun. Pick it up if you own a Switch, but don't run out and buy a Switch just because of this game.

    This all sounds terrible but it's not that bad, it's just not what i expected and after seeing all the praise im baffled. This is not the best game ever, or the generation, it's not even the best mario game of the year, that's Mario+Rabbids. I feel like those reviews are based on nostalgia and because it's nintendo.     this was a very short game. Could use less hand holding from the developers. Was left wanting a lot more worlds to explore. the game basically played itself. I am optimistic that the next one will be better.

There are truckloads of moons just hanging around, most are not even a challenge to get (2 minutes apiece, tops). I also found the difficulty bar both too low for a seasoned gamer    I had great expectations about this game, which ultimately proved underwhelming.

This is never shown, and not explicitly sign-posted for the players. The only indication is an obscure explosion sign on the platform to "show" you have to stomp on it. This goes against what the game has taught you where things vibrate when you're suppose to stomp on them. A good design would have been to put a Power Moon on such a platform and when you stomp to obtain it, the stairs swap orientation.
    Another example is where you have to fight an octopus boss by shooting it. You NEED to raise yourself to a certain height before your hit registers. This makes no sense because all your projectiles hit the boss. There is no clear indication of where the hitbox of the boss is. There is a hint where cappy says, you need to go above the head. But the boss has magma on his head initially. After the first hits, the magma is removed, so you think the initial hint is only meant to remove the magma.

    The movement of Mario is also sloppy, where you slip and slide a few steps before moving. WHY? This makes the control feel slippery. Sure, you can get use to it. But again, WHY? It doesn't serve ANY gameplay mechanics. A platformer needs to have tight controls.

    By the middle of the game, I felt like I wanted to just get the game over and done with. I don't get why this gets a higher user score compared to Breath of the Wild, which has FAR better world and game design. I look forward to finishing the story so I can go back to the world of Zelda.    … Expand

    However, I didn't really enjoy the game throughout the journey. I actually forced myself to finish more than half of the game (not even include post-game contents). Story is very weak. While I agree it's a very well made game and has some absolutely fantastic moments, these moments are often short-lived and much of the rest of the game is taken up by the tedium of searching for / chasing down moons.

    Before I dive in I should mention that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is my 2nd favourite game of all time (it actually knocked Super Mario World from this spot) and I'm a big Mario fan in general. I should also probably mention however that while I liked Super Mario 64, I didn't love it and furthermore I couldn't even play Super Mario Sunshine past the first few levels due to it's poor camera, uninspiring environments and lame premise: Mario cleans up graffiti with a water canon; come on. To this day It's the only main series Mario game I've never finished (Lost Levels included) and therein probably lies much of my problem with SMO; I'm clearly more of a fan of the linear-style Mario games rather than these sandbox collectathons, still I think it's worth mentioning (mainly for those who believe SMO does no wrong) what are, imo, serious flaws with the game.

    But first I will list what I did like about the game - I still gave it 7/10 so I must have liked something!

    Firstly, it's Mario and the game still feels fantastic to play and move Mario around the environment. On top of this Cappy provides some great new moves to Mario's usual repertoire making Mario more fun to control than ever.

    2nd, the capturing mechanic is SUCH a great idea and at least 50% of the things you can capture add some really fun dynamics to the gameplay. Power-Ups are often one of the most enjoyable things in Mario games and capturing boosts the number of skills you can acquire well beyond previous records.

    3rd, the combined use of surprises and nostalgia adds a lot of fun moments into the game. A few bits in New Donk City in particular such as **that** moped chase down the back alleyway as well as the scene you play when the festival kicks-off had me smiling from ear-to-ear.

    Finally this game is easily the funniest Mario game outside of the Paper Mario series - a lot of this is in the text spouted by the inhabitants of the various Kingdoms which had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion.

    So onto the bad.. my main complaint is that a large number of the moons just aren't fun to collect. I'm not talking about the random ones that you have to search high & low for (although there are too many of those) I'm talking about the ones hiding in plain sight that force you into some monotonous task to obtain. These challenges are almost always repeated over-and-over in the various Kingdoms with little to no variation (something previous Mario games have excelled in avoiding) - these "challenges" can be broken down into 4 main categories:

    1) Chasing after things

    Chasing after Rabbits / Chasing after shiny birds / chasing after sheep and herding them into a area - all very boring

    2) Finding certain items:

    Captain Toad / Peach / local currency to buy a local's outfit / shop + coins so you can buy moons / sphinx so you can answer a boring (& ridiculously simple) question / kingdom portals / underground items via HD rumble effect / capturing inanimate objects to move them out of the way - None of these things I found fun to find in the slightest

    3) Doing something quickly:

    Collecting musical notes before the timer runs out (dull) / Timer Challenges (some fun, others not) / Koopa Races (way too many of these, although to be fair a few are kinda fun & actually have some variety)

    4) Minigames:

    These sound more fun than they are but at least most aren't repeated ad infinitum: RC Car / Beachball / Jump Rope / god-awful Trace-walking game. There were a few mini-games such as Bound Bowl that were really great but again these were sparsely available in comparison to the (literally) hundreds of moons that weren't much fun to collect at all.

    Another major bugbear is the lack of challenge. All over the internet I've seen this comment countered with: "yeah, you clearly haven't played the last Kingdom yet" to which my response would be; having a game which is pedestrian in difficulty for 99% of the experience only to ramp up to 11 for a single level doesn't equate to a difficult game overall - it's a shame because '3D World' pulled this exact same trick and was worse off for it. Why have Nintendo lost the ability to gradually ramp up the difficulty during the course of the game? They never had problems with this in the past and I really hope the trend doesn't continue.

    All in all - If it were up to me these things would have elevated the game into something amazing instead of just good

    * 20-40% less moons in each Kingdom - removing most of the ones mentioned above.
    * 4-6 fully fledged additional Kingdoms

    This is a pretty good game but isn't a 10/10 it's just a platformer with the normal Mario story and less interesting transformations then banjo Kazooie. The fights with Bowser are the highlight of the game. Just can't justify giving a mediocre game like this a better score than some of the best games of all time.

    It is a really decent and fun game with lots to do. The thing that trew me off was the level design and bosses. Only bowser feels like a real mario boss the rest is just made up weird stuff that doesnt belong in the game. Secrets are wel hidden en i really enjoyed the rest of the game.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous and runs smoothly, whether you play the game docked or inOn the surface Mario Odyssey might seem to be the best 3D Mario game ever made. It's a return to the sandbox style Mario games like 64 and Sunshine, where you get to explore many worlds while making use of Mario's diverse set of moves and abilities to overcome any platforming obstacle in your way. The soundtrack and overall game feel are also up to Nintendo's usual high standard of polish.
    That said, I don't share the sentiment of Mario Odyssey being the best 3D Mario game. I think it's honestly one of the weaker ones for several reasons:

    1) The controls are quite weird. It's not like they're dysfunctional, it's rather that they are a bit underutilized. Mario Odyssey essentially only makes use of 3 buttons. A jump button, a button that lets you throw cappy and the ground pound. Each of these functions is for some reason tied to multiple buttons, which deprives the game of having a more fluid control scheme. Whereas Mario 64 lets you dive with just the press of a button, Odyssey makes you combine the attack and ground pound buttons, which just feels unnecessarily clunky, especially when you want to swim faster under water. This game also felt the need to lock a huge amount of moves behind motion controls (which are absolutely terrible in handheld mode and very uncomfortable for anyone who doesn't play with the joycons separately). This could've easily been solved by utilizing the buttons of your controller more efficiently.

    2) It's way too easy. And I don't mean to be condescending by using this cookie-cutter criticism that always gets thrown around. I don't really play single player games to have difficulty, that's what multiplayer games are there for. I do think that Odyssey took it a bit too far though. Mario games are usually a comfortable ride, but get really hard after you're done with the main game. Odyssey never gets to that harder point. The last challenge level of the game was something that I breezed through without dying once....maybe it's because Mario can cover huge distances by diving into your cap in midair and maybe it's because I played Mario 3D World a few months prior, where the last level took an eternity to beat because the platforming challenges couldn't be bypassed so easliy.

On top of that, the exploration is rather tedious, especially in the endgame. Anyone who enjoys to literally kick every stone and check out the entire outer edge of each world will love this aspect, but everyone else will probably end up getting quite bored because the worlds all have very unoriginal filler content. ''Go carry 4 acorns across the entire map and wait for a moon to come out // race against these koopas twice // catch those bunnies again // take the dog for a walk and hope that he finds a moon etc''. And I know that in 3D collectathons, the main collectible is there to give the player a sense of progress, while also unlocking more stuff as the game goes on...but Mario Odyssey stops rewarding the player way too soon, so collecting the remaining moons in the endgame turns into quite the chore. The only moons that were constantly fun to get, where the ones inside these self-contained challenge rooms. That's where all the good level-design resides in. Everything that has to do with exploring the worlds itself is very lackluster however, since all you do is just run around...and that's sadly not even an exaggeration.

    I've collected 887 moons in my first file and I often attempted speedruns of the game. Anyone who has a switch should get this game. It didn't get anywhere close to reaching its potential, but it's still a great time for anyone who doesn't necessarily wants to 100% the game.    … Expand

    Like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey feels watered down and generic compared to the rest of its own franchise. Its worlds have disparate art styles that make the game feel incohesive. There is a lack of proper platforming, which has instead been replaced by running around large levels more than jumping. Often times the player will get moons much too frequently, which makes them feel much less rewarding than power stars in past games.

    There are a few mini games, but they are not good. The Volleyball and Jump-rope mini games are more chore than fun, particularly when it comes to getting the harder of the two moons locked behind each mini game.

    Some of the challenge levels in Dark Side and Darker Side are poorly designed. Looking at you, Breakdown Road (aka unadulterated BS). Most are lazy copy/paste jobs of earlier levels with some form of artificial difficulty thrown on top to do the designer's job for him. Some of the ridiculous challenge levels can be helped with the game’s assist mode when they are too annoying or too much of a chore to do legitimately. However, some of these levels are poorly designed in an unintelligent way that makes assist mode useless. I never use assist modes unless the game really forces the issue, but at least they designed it properly so that when you beat something with assist mode on, it still actually counts as beating it.

    Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is sadly a bit lackluster compared to some of its great predecessors like Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64 and the Mario Galaxy games.    … Expand

    Thought this was a decent mario game, not the best levels or most memorable, mario controls really well and its fun to pull off moves to zip around the levels, but the level designs are too simple and the over-abundance of moons diminishes the feeling of getting one. I dont really see myself coming back to play this too much but overall i still thought it was a good game, just not a masterpiece

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game feels like a combination of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and both Mario Galaxy games in one massive entry. A fun title that will be the focus of several Mario related subjects until the release of New Super Mario Bros Deluxe.
    However, there are a few things that weigh this game down quite a bit for me.

    Firstly, while I do enjoy the costume gimmick, I don't see the appeal several of the costumes and needed to purchase specific costumes for certain moons.

    Secondly, the game play isn't entirely innovative. Sure the whole "Mario possess objects with Cappy" is cool and all, but after a while it gets old (not to mention a lack of enemies you can capture) and boring much like the gimmick of having a Luma fight with you in Mario Galaxy.

    Finally, after finishing the core game and collecting as many moons as I had the patience for, I didn't see any replay value. In fact the main games end, where the Mushroom Kingdom is unlocked, there isn't much else to do.    … Expand

And the great story tied in with the difficulty of that game, which felt very appropriate. However, mario odyssey's game difficulty in relation to story progression felt very unsatisfyingly easy, and was very bland for a 3d mario game. I could skip parts of the story just by collecting moons. And the boss battles, an exception being the last bowser battle/sequence, were lacklustre as hell. I know Mario games usually have a young fan base, but still i wish there was more challenge in relation to the story. I'd trade a good story for a higher difficulty anyday. However, i have learned that the best way to play this game - for me - is just to treat it as a scavenger hunt/puzzle game. Collecting all the moons is a challenge in itself, and because of the switch's nature, i can pick up and play for 10 miniutes intervals and collect moons in that time, slowly collecting all of them. And that is when Mario Odyssey shines, when you don't focus on the story, and explore the worlds around you, and their puzzles buried in them.… Expand

    Others are right about the game being easy, but i still liked it. I think though by the end I was just not feeling it as much and so never bothered to collect/complete everything, I was just burnt out. I think it's a solid title but wouldn't be in my "best of" collection.

    Pretty good game, actually my favorite 3D Mario game. Lots of creative worlds, sharp controls, the only problem is that the "Moons", which are what you collect this time, can sometimes feel a bit cheap, as there are too many of them and some are too easy to get. Some of the worlds are too small, and it could have used another world or two, but overall a solid game.

I really hate drowning damage and Cheep Cheeps moved too slow, so I turned on assist mode. I really don't like the 6 bonus hearts, because they make the game too easy in my opinion. I toggled assist mode off for Wooded Kingdom, not only because of the extra hearts, but also because disabling instadeath when falling off ledges is boring. Then I got to Seaside Kingdom and turned on assist mode. Ground pounding the squid was pretty hard, but I managed. After that, I went to Luncheon Kingdom, struggled to capture the fire thing, fell into the lava, repeated the process twice, and then ragequitted. However, the rest of the game is awesome and fun. I just wish there was an assist config like in Celeste and Darkest Dungeon because just two options are pretty limiting and extreme. Overall, I recommend this game if you can get over these annoyances.… Expand

This is for me one of the weaker 3D Mario games when compared to the challenge and level design presented by Mario galaxy or even Mario 64, which this game claims to be a successor to, yet for the most part fails to understand adding value to tasks in order to get a moon, making them feel more Korok seed thanA stellar collectathon game but for a 3D Mario game, I expect a little better. This is for me one of the weaker 3D Mario games when compared to the challenge and level design presented by Mario galaxy or even Mario 64, which this game claims to be a successor to, yet for the most part fails to understand adding value to tasks in order to get a moon, making them feel more Korok seed than power star. I was also baffled by how you’re forced to visit each kingdom in a mostly linear order despite the game claiming to be more open-ended, while also lacking any real hub world like peaches castle from 64. Instead the actual areas you visit feel like hub worlds where you search for secrets, moons and challenge rooms rather than feeling like actual platform challenges in of themselves. While I appreciate the more open feel of the levels they just feel far too easy with no real consequence for death other than losing coins which are easily replaced. The mechanics like capturing are interesting but never feel fully taken advantage of to create the ingenious level design last seen in the Mario galaxy series. And don’t get me started on the amount of lazily copy and pasted content throughout the game. There were far too many instances where I had to ground pound a spot to get a moon or buy one from the store which count as actual missions by the way. While you can always skip these ones if you want, I ended up finding that very few of the moons actually felt rewarding to get, making a lot of the game feel like unnecessary filler.

    However, I also realise this game does better in some areas than any Mario game ever. Mario has never felt so good to control and often makes me want to pick up and play the game just because of how satisfying his move set is to pull off. Therefore, this is the best looking and running game in the series with the best controls, move set and camera, though I don’t like how the wall jump has been nerfed and made almost useless. I absolutely would like to see Mario maintain this broad move set for his next 3D outing, be it with a better wall jump. I just wish the game took advantage of his move set more in the level design as many areas feel like walking simulators rather than challenges that actually utilised this move set in clever and interesting ways. Overall an amazing sandbox with extremely tight controls but a disappointing platformer that lacks challenge with many ideas not quite reaching their full potential, making Super Mario Odyssey feel more like a tutorial for breath of the wild. I enjoyed the game a lot and would recommend to any switch owner looking for a relaxing sandbox game, even if it can’t deliver on my desire for a grander platforming challenge. While I don’t think this game is the sequel to 64 or as groundbreaking as many suggest it is, I still believe it’s worth picking up and playing.    … Expand

    Doesn't do much to differ from older games. It's basically Mario Galaxy but better on a better system, with other expected improvements.

    It's good and all, but for me the formula is a little aged by now. Jump on enemies, maybe smack 'em with a hat fiest. That's it though, nothing new. I suppose if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

    It’s only okay, I don’t really care for it, I think it’s a decent Mario game, I’m glad people like it but it just isn’t for me, it has a lot of great stuff but I wouldn’t recommend it if it’s still at 60 dollars and you want to give it to a kid.

    The good:
    - Mario's movement feels fantastic
    - the game looks and sounds amazing
    - enjoyable boss fights
    - coins can be spent on customisation

    The bad:
    - no sort of challenge until you reach the endgame
    - some kingdoms feel like cut content
    - lots of moons require repetitive, mundane tasks to obtain

The visuals are very striking and love that the game runs at a stable 60fps which absolutely makes this the most visually impressive Mario game yet. The controls feel super snappy and the music is incredible. Unfortunately though, these positives straight up do not outweigh the negatives to me. As I already mentioned, the moment-to-moment gameplay just does not feel meaningful to me because of the game's lack of difficulty and collectables (the integral Moon system). This, by all means, does not mean the game is bad but it doesn't mean it's amazing either :/… Expand

    the game is good, it has great level design, amazing graphics and a really good gimmick with cappy, the problems are that its to short and easy, it even has an easy mode when the normal one is really easy already, the bosses are really cool tho, the worlds are to small and uninteresting in some cases, the ending is awful and just a disappointing game if we compare it to something like galaxy

    Un juego fantástico en todos sus apartados en donde una jubabilidad perfecta se combina con un ost exquisito, un estilo artístico precioso, una exploración magnífica y un trabajo mimado hasta el último detalle.
    El mejor juego de Mario creado hasta la época y junta a Legend of Zelda BotW hacen una combinación perfecta para tener un montón de horas de pura diversión.

    If you want to just casually play the game, I think it is a fine 10-13 hour long experience. If you are going for collecting 100% of the power moons, I think it is something around 25 hours. I really want to collect all of them, but simply there is no point for doing it. Most of the power moons are simply lying around in the open, which makes them easy to find, but absolutely not rewarding at all. Take Cat Shines in Bowser's Fury for example. They are always locked away behind some kind of a challenge (such as riding Plessie, chasing down a rabbit, chasing shadow Luigi, general platforming on islands...), they are challenging to get and feel rewarding. In Super Mario Odyssey, that is no longer the case.

    The other thing about Power Moons is that there are way, way too many. That amount is absolutely unnecessary, and could have been lowered by 250 at least. Most of the moons are in the open anyway. There are around 850 unique moons to collect around the kingdoms, but the rest is locked away, because you have to buy the remaining 149 moons from shops for coins. Not only that it is an extremely lame decision, but you can buy the moons indefinitely, allowing you to reach the 999 goal (100%) with not much effort. Just buy tons of Moons. And if someone does so, you are not going to feel like collecting actual moons anymore, because you simply have the golden Odyssey sail, no point in doing it. Not mentioning that some of them make absolutely no sense. Why would some idiot even make a parking lot for motorbikes on a roof with only one single spot and even give you something for parking there? How did they expect citizen to regularly reach there!

    Nintendo's idea about purple coins is absolutely ridiculous. There is no way to find every purple coin in the game without looking for them, there is no way to buy a hint like for Power Moons. Now you might be thinking, that they are around Power Moons to find. Well, yeah, good point, but not really the greatest. There is always a chance that someone may miss some while going for the moons, either because they just want to play the game or miss them by accident. If that happens, what are you going to do? Do all moons again to traverse most of the kingdom one more time only to miss them again, or look them up on YouTube? All collectibles in all games which force the player to look them up on YouTube are bad collectibles, and purple coins cannot save themselves from being crap, that is how Nintendo created them.

    I really like that you can dress up Mario in some costumes, most of them look really really good. Some of the outfits grant you access to specific areas through the game and certain characters have some reactions when talking to them with a specific outfit. Most of them are really expensive, though, especially those ones unlocked later on (prices go up to 9999 coins for one item!!!), and they are absolutely unnecessary. Could have been lowered to 75% price.

    A big plus is that the game has lots of post-game content. If you completed the game on 100%, you still can kill some time playing Luigi's Balloon World, which is fun, if you don't encounter hackers, but that's a story for another time.

    Tanks are an absolutely ass capture. No, seriously. When playing while capturing a tank, you will feel that it is really off. They are so slow and aiming is painful as hell. The crosshair moves at different speeds on Y and X axis, meaning it is really hard to aim (and obviously, you cannot change it!)

    Also a good thing to ask, why do the characters behave like absolute idiots? I understand that it is a game for kids, but keep in mind that adults and teens play as well. Some of the characters say absolute trash and feel like they have vacuum in their brain. They also made Pauline a gold digger (she does not like cheap nice umbrellas, but likes expensive purses instead LOL).

    The very last two post game kingdoms are not kingdoms and have no reason to exist in the first place. They are not kingdoms, but doors to challenge rooms (one to a boss rush and the second one to a super long and tight section with no checkpoints). They just randomly added couple Moons to one of them to make them seem less empty and left them to rot there, but that did not help. They should have been in the last kingdom of the main story and just opened up after you reached all requirements to access them. With one being significantly emptier than the other, there are more almost completely blank kingdoms around the game. What a wasted opportunities they were, what a pity. Story moment, then random Moons and then bye.

    A bit easy and grindy. Uninspired and empty in comparison with the Galaxy games. A bit of a dissapointment. Mario controls ace, as expected, and the hat/capture mechanics were interesting but that’s about it for me. A pitty.

    A fine game but I must admit that all the 10/10s sometimes leave me wondering if I’m wrong when it comes to Mario games. Very fun but not a “perfect score” kinda game for me.

    Pretty fun Mario platformer that has a lot of diversity. Felt a bit easy but it is a kid's game so didn't expect dark souls level difficulty.

    At best, the game is decent.

    At worse, it's very repetitive.

    Not saying it's bad, but I'm sure as hell not saying it's the best either. Not by a long shot.

    Overall I found the game pretty enjoyable, but honestly I was expecting for something more for a game ranked as good ad Breath of the wild. The story is nice and the levels are fun to explore, but in the end I found it too short and also a bit repetitive.

    This is the first Mario game I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. I loved they made Mario in 3D. Typical Mario story but I enjoyed traversing the different levels within the game. Solid Mario game!

    The Worlds are finally a little bit more imaginative again conceptwise instead of falling back into stereotypes, although there is still a little room for improvement (even weirder concepts for worlds would be amazing). Also the amount of worlds to explore with 10 kingdoms in total (not counting boss-platforms, tutorial worlds, etc) is fairly short, especially compared to other games in the series.

    The music and graphics of the game are straight up amazing though. Very few Switch Games look and sound this good. Not much room for improvement here!

    What I didn't like however was that the main-collectable in this game, "Power Moons", are a little too abundant to be exciting to collect. You receive Power-Moons for anything: Ground-Pounding on a shiny spot, planting a fruit, sitting on a bench... You can easily bypass huge chunks of levels including bosses(!) by just farming Power-Moons and then moving on to the next world. (Some players even reported accidentally skipping bosses due to this issue). The Game's Power-Moon-Counter doesn't even let you collect all the Power-Moons, since it will stop working once you hit 999 Moons. It would be nice to see the number of main-collectables be reduced and have them be a little bit more meaningful again in the next game.    … Expand

    Mario's movement is the most mistake-forgiving and easy to execute to date. Controlling creatures with the cap was great, but so many missed opportunities to do cool challenges with them.

    Balloon World also punishes you for being too good. People don't bother with hard balloons because the risk-reward and ranking system favor the easy ones.

    Overall it's GREAT if you consider it more of an adventure game that won't scratch that action-platforming itch. This Mario game is more Zelda-like than Breath of the Wild, which went the survival crafting route. Devs will change a franchise to a completely different genre and get praised for "innovating".

    In the end, Odyssey is accessible for the Animal Crossing audience and recommended for beginners. Mario 64 remains KING.    … Expand

    So much hype for this game but it doesn’t deserve it. Sure there is a lot of content but the quality is poor. Same old problems with camera controls that have always been an issue with 3D Mario games.

    No imagination displayed in the level design, recycling world themes as always.

    This game felt pretty short and 'lightly' done -- which is good in a way, it doesn't overstay... but also felt pretty expensive for the time considering comparable games. I'm also not a huge fan of Switch controls, which feel like toys compared to the old consoles, and almost every difficult bit in this is down to.

    What started off as a fresh and new adventure turned very quickly into an unwelcome slog through more and more eye searingly bright "kingdoms" that had more frustrating moments than fun. The movement tech felt clunky,    Completely and disappointingly underwhelming.

    The movement tech felt clunky, Mario felt too heavy and unresponsive, the button combos for doing some of the more advanced movement was the opposite of enjoyable, and when there were ice physics... just no... stop.

    It is very clear from this game and BotW that Nintendo has a long way to go when it comes to developing engaging and captivating open world games, because this felt like a less charming Banjo Kazooie in a bigger, less planned out as a cohesive world, sandbox with little nuggets sprinkled throughout.
    It was like being given a meatball sub, but more than half the meatballs were just cubes of bread.
    None of the parts of each level flowed into the next, it was all very segmented, and some of the "Kingdoms" made me want to leave literally as soon as possible. The "Kingdoms" were so unmemorable that I cannot even recall the names of them, where as for other Mario games they are stuck in my memory forever because they were fun as heck.
    All the floor is poison zone was the worst offender, I think I spent all of 15 minutes in that world and I never ever ever want to go back. And Lunchmeat land made me want to gouge my eyes out.

    The only zone I actually enjoyed was, of course, New Donk City, where it was abundantly clear that it had the vast majority of development time spent on it. Out of all the worlds that was the only one where exploring flowed naturally into more exploring, jumping from rooftop to rooftop was fantastically fun, and that was the only zone I got more moons than I needed to just peace out.

    None of the bosses provided even the slightest challenge, I just stood facing them and waggled my left or right hand, depending on what flavor of waggle I was feeling like at the time, and they all fell first try.

    All in all I was very disappointed by the bland, repetitive and all in all uninspired game-play.
    It's a good looking game, it is good for a bit of fun, kids will love it.
    But it is sadly only just a good game, nothing great, nothing outstanding.    … Expand

Also they aren't fun to collect it just becomes a chore . i'm basically finished and I've just bought it ! Its a very creative game but is no where near as good as its predecessors... Buy Zelda not this !… Expand

    While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

    The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]
