Humankind abandoned Earth as it entered another ice age. Over time, those who came to hold dominion over the world were... rabbits!?

After humanity left, the rabbits referred to humans as "giants" and revered the massive ruins left behind as "Smokestack Mountain." Those fearless enough to violate and excavate this sacred site are known as "rust diggers." The protagonist, an old rabbit named Stamp, is one such rust digger, making a daily routine of excavating Smokestack Mountain.

One day, on his way back from exploring Smokestack Mountain, Stamp encounters a rust digging team known as the "BBs" and ends up joining them in a quest to delve deeper into the heart of Smokestack Mountain.

Along the way, Stamp discovers records from ancient information storage devices called "D-TAMs" scattered throughout the ruins. One of these records appears to belong to his estranged daughter, hinting at her peril and revealing hidden truths about the world he once believed in.

To unravel many mysteries and follow his daughter's trail, Stamp continues his journey into the depths of the ruins...

With a big world to explore and a compelling story full of twists and turns, Rusty Rabbit offers a pretty meaty campaign that stays interesting all the way through. The gameplay loop and upgrades are very satisfying and keep things fresh along the way. Whether you’re familiar with the artist’s work or you’re brand new to it like me, I fully recommend Rusty Rabbit.

Rusty Rabbit blends heartfelt storytelling and platforming action in a post-human world ruled by rabbits. While its mech controls require patience, the emotional core and worldbuilding shine through, delivering a charming experience that lingers longer than expected.

These issues aside, Rusty Rabbit was still an enjoyable adventure with a unique story and colorful characters. While the platforming and combat were held back by some design issues, and though I was personally frustrated by an occasional lack of guidance in the game, I still think this is a fun adventure that’s worth checking out.

Developer SoFun has crafted an endearing and occasionally hilarious world full of mystery, which even after credits roll feels poised for bigger things. However, at launch, the game feels noticeably slow and the visuals seem compromised on Switch, which brings borderline sluggishness occasionally into frustrating territory. By no means a dealbreaker, and not necessarily a barrier to the dozens of hours of fun gameplay you can find, but we hope to hear of some updates that make exploring Smokestack Mountain as enjoyable as it should be.

Rusty Rabbit has some interesting ideas, but they’re buried under tedious and somewhat undercooked gameplay.

Rusty Rabbit is a game packed with potential, thanks to its intriguing premise, promising gameplay loop, and distinct art direction. Unfortunately, it struggles to capitalize on these strengths. The combat lacks impact, the gameplay loop quickly becomes formulaic, and the visuals feel dated, all of which contribute to an experience that, while occasionally enjoyable, ultimately feels uninspired and forgettable. There are glimpses of here and there, but the game never does quite enough to stand out from the crowd.

Rusty Rabbit needed a tune-up, but there's still some treasure to find in its scraps.
