    RIOT – Civil Unrest’s creator, Leonard Menchiari, experienced rioting first-hand at the NoTAV protests in Italy.     Riot: Civil Unrest is strange and unique, with a strong social conscience. The material covered here is important and highly relevant to our times, lending a decidedly edutainment feel to the game as a whole. So, while the game certainly won’t appeal to everyone, its original premise and gameplay make it worth checking out.

    RIOT - Civil Unrest could have been something special, but its move to Nintendo Switch from other platforms hasn't seen that potential embraced any further. The lack of touchscreen support and the absence of a proper tutorial mode are odd decisions considering how difficult it can be to follow the action when playing in handheld/tabletop mode. Even its use of real-life clashes between protesters and police fails to bring anything insightful or interesting to the table. Sadly, this riot is already fizzling out.

    RIOT – Civil Unrest is an interesting concept poorly executed, resulting in a tedious game that fails to achieve its own lofty aspirations. The distinction between police and protester is valid, but is executed in a way that leaves you wanting greater insight.

    RIOT - Civil Unrest features a rather original premise that pits the player in civil strife scenes based off real world events and it does a decent job at that, especially as it allows the player to play both as the rioters and as the forces of order. Unfortunately the game suffers from too many unnecessary problems, including (crucially) issues with its control system and the lack of a tutorial doesn't help. The promise of future updates, on the other hand, is a plus.

    It’s an unplayable imp of a game which had so many changes and iterations during the course of its production that there was actually nothing left to save. The switch version is an early access copypaste and the first game that crashed on my Switch. [03/2019, p.48]
