Resident Evil is most certainly a game that belongs back in the 90s. It's no longer scary, the dialogue is terrible, the controls are terrible, and the item management is horrendous. On top of that, bringing it to a portable console is just madness. With any portable console game developers need to take battery life into account, and they haven't. With any portable console game developers need to take battery life into account, and they haven't. Ink ribbons are hard to come by, so using one to save 30 minutes progress while on a train or having a longer play session, seeing your red battery light come on and having no ink ribbons or a typewriter to save is simply unforgivable. This will always be a "classic" and will be alot of people's first ever memory of the survival horror genre, but you want to battle against the games puzzles and enemies, not the controls or inventory management. You can't even drop items.

For dienhard fans of the original only. And even then, you might wonder why you even enjoyed it.

All these years later, Resident Evil remains an excellent survival-horror game. The puzzles are still good, the brief bouts of action are still tense, and the scares still deliver even if you know about them beforehand. The appeal of this port is the fact that the game can now be portable, so the benefits of the smaller screen really come into play. It might have slightly longer load times in some areas, but if you want to play the remade classic on the go, this is a well-done port.

Still one of the best video game remakes, albeit with some old-school mechanics that show its age, the Nintendo Switch release of Resident Evil finally means a proper Resident Evil game you can crap yourself while playing on the crapper.

Resident Evil’s flaws are every bit as glaring today as they were back in 2002. The controls, the awkward camera and the game’s item management are all sources of irritation. And yet, despite these issues, Resident Evil HD is still an undeniable classic. No other survival horror game has managed to channel the same compelling level of tension. If you’ve ever played Resident Evil in any of its incarnations in the 23 years since its original release, you’ll know exactly what to expect: one of the most genuinely unnerving games the industry has ever produced. Having the game in portable form is just extra icing on the cake.
