This game makes you want to break your Switch over your face. Seriously, don’t buy it. While the graphics and aesthetic and atmosphere and music are laudable, the controls are incredibly frustrating to the point where playing this game is basically self-harm. Seriously, don’t buy it. While the graphics and aesthetic and atmosphere and music are laudable, the controls are incredibly frustrating to the point where playing this game is basically self-harm. Everything good about Rain World is completely invalidated by the un-fun, on-rails, main-character-handles-like-a-shopping-cart difficulty. I love hard games like Dark Souls and Celeste – but those titles have a sense of payoff and accomplishment. Here, you just control a pathetic slug who keeps dying over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, replaying the same screens again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again. Reading the previous sentence is exactly what the game feels like. Keep your money and watch a 25 minute speedrun ... AND MY GOD, I wrote everything above before viewing the ending. This game completely abandons its own “small creature vs nature” premise at the conclusion, making the player endure navigating the sperm cat through quasi-mystical realms that are so dark and blurry you cannot even comprehend what is happening. Save yourself from this self-important nonsense. You only have one life. Don’t spend it on Rain World. Expand

Rain World is an indie experience that does not try to hide its difficulty level but which will no doubt find plenty of fans warming up to its very well crafted world and art style. Its gameplay may feel frustrating at moments but Rain World is overall a very involving game that will get players to lock their attention on the game.

The main appeal I saw in Rain World was in its art style and the design of its enemies. Its mechanics need some fine tuning for it to be the masterpiece it has the potential to be. If you’re looking for a game that’ll really try your patience and give you a good challenge, then I’d absolutely recommend adding this to your library. Otherwise, I’d recommend you look elsewhere.

Rain World does an excellent job in letting you know when the cycle ends, sometimes too much so as the game makes heavy use of the rumble function to let you know the end is nigh.
