This game makes you want to break your Switch over your face. Seriously, don’t buy it. While the graphics and aesthetic and atmosphere and music are laudable, the controls are incredibly frustrating to the point where playing this game is basically self-harm. Everything good about Rain World is completely invalidated by the un-fun, on-rails, main-character-handles-like-a-shopping-cart difficulty. I love hard games like Dark Souls and Celeste – but those titles have a sense of payoff and accomplishment. Here, you just control a pathetic slug who keeps dying over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, replaying the same screens again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again. Reading the previous sentence is exactly what the game feels like. Keep your money and watch a 25 minute speedrun ... AND MY GOD, I wrote everything above before viewing the ending. This game completely abandons its own “small creature vs nature” premise at the conclusion, making the player endure navigating the sperm cat through quasi-mystical realms that are so dark and blurry you cannot even comprehend what is happening. Save yourself from this self-important nonsense. You only have one life. Don’t spend it on Rain World. Expand

The organic feeling of the ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits it are unlike anything I've seen in any other game - it truly feels alive and breathing. Observing and studying the world around you is the key to get to where you want to go. Everything from the general ambience, to sound effects, the designs of the levels, the constant search for food and shelter, outwitting and stealthing by enemies - to mystical otherworldly encounters and surprising mechanics that will literally turn the world upside down - this is just pure beauty all the way through. One of the best games I've ever played hands down. Expand

I have some mixed feelings about Rain World. Part of me loves it to bits, but part of me also curses some of the gameplay hell it put me through.
On the negative side, this game just does not give a crap about giving you a truly enjoyable experience. That was clearly the intent of the game designers, and it works to a degree, but often leads to some painfully stressful gameplay moments.

On the negative side, this game just does not give a crap about giving you a truly enjoyable experience. That was clearly the intent of the game designers, and it works to a degree, but often leads to some painfully stressful gameplay moments. Almost every enemy in the game kills you in one hit, checkpoints can be ridiculously far apart at times, and due to the random nature of how enemies and level-traversal can work, losing progress can be very disheartening. Death is a surprisingly punishing mechanic in this game, and yet it comes very often, swiftly, and straight-up unexpected at far too many times. I will go as far to say that there were a handful of levels towards the second half of the game that had flat-out bad design, because the developers refused to give you the necessary information or tools to succeed in some very tough/obtuse challenges.
On the positive side, Rain World offers an incredibly unique and mystical experience. Its visuals, story, music, and atmosphere are some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing in a game. There are plenty of moments in the game where you discover something new, and these moments are usually underscored by haunting, lovely, minimal music tracks. The gameplay, despite my gripes earlier, is still very well crafted as well. Exploration, risk-taking, and experimentation is rewarded and there are many fun and brilliant interactions to be had with the many creatures in the world. The ending is also probably one of my all-time favorites in a game; it's one of those crazy, abstract visual spectacles that lingers with you. The pixel artwork is hands down the best I've ever seen, and the enemy and character designs are all great, fluid, and memorable.
These things I have mentioned elevate the game to something higher than just a platformer; it's an experience. Strictly based off of gameplay, I would give Rain World a 6 out of 10. Based off of story, visuals, presentation, and atmosphere, I would give it a 10/10. As a whole experience, it evens out to an 8/10.
Rain World is an absolutely fantastic game held back by some periodically rage-inducing gameplay. It still always found a way to keep me going and wanting to experience more in spite of that, though. Recommended to those who love weird, abstract gaming experiences.

A masterpiece, nothing less. Give it the time and dig into the Rain World Wiki though, because there is almost no handholding provided in the game

One of the best games ever made.
There's nothing quite like it out there.
    Just go and play it.

This game is definitely not my cup of tea: though I'll try to be fair because it is subjective. However where it loses me is that in its desire to be free roaming it becomes too disconnected from any sense of good progress and storytelling that it ends up being mainly an exercise on platforming exploration without much boundaries which can be considered a positive for many players but for many others it would be desired to have more structure. This’s hidden gem of survival gaming. This game is not for everyone, but its fit to me. I love this game. It’s simple in mechanics and very hard like survival games should be. Only bad thing is control system, you need to spend more time to learn it and get used to it, but if you play using 8bitdo pad with great d-pad this game can be more accessible.
For me it’s one of the best games

For me it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played on NS and I think this game fits perfectly into the format of a portable console.

It's a fantastic game I love this game with all my heart. At first it seems difficult to control, but later it becomes just difficult :) I love the fantastic atmosphere combined with difficulty. If you like survival games this one is perfect.
    True underrated gem

The controls are not for everybody because the only actually interesting movement option the game shows you is the lunge and its pretty limited. One thing that I hate myself for is watching that video of the entire game because I imagine playing the game blind and discovering the beautiful and terrifying world of rain world. The game is also very vague at times of what you have to do I didn't have that problem because of the video, but i can see why people would be confused of what to do. In the end I still think this game is a masterpiece, and im very excited for the downpour dlc. Expand

Rain World is an indie experience that does not try to hide its difficulty level but which will no doubt find plenty of fans warming up to its very well crafted world and art style. Its gameplay may feel frustrating at moments but Rain World is overall a very involving game that will get players to lock their attention on the game.

The main appeal I saw in Rain World was in its art style and the design of its enemies. Its mechanics need some fine tuning for it to be the masterpiece it has the potential to be. If you’re looking for a game that’ll really try your patience and give you a good challenge, then I’d absolutely recommend adding this to your library. Otherwise, I’d recommend you look elsewhere.

Rain World does an excellent job in letting you know when the cycle ends, sometimes too much so as the game makes heavy use of the rumble function to let you know the end is nigh.
