While the Switch performance isn’t perfect, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a ton of fun throughout my time with Prodeus on Nintendo Switch. I love being able to sync across Steam Deck, my laptop, and Nintendo Switch thanks to the in-game account, and having access to the complete experience with no compromises on the content side on Nintendo Switch makes this an essential for first-person shooter fans. Games like Prodeus and DUSK are absolutely gems that you owe it to yourself to play if you, like me, enjoyed Doom back in the day. Now I just need a vinyl soundtrack announced to go alongside the physical release coming.

Prodeus is the kind of game that knows exactly what it wants to do and executes that vision flawlessly. It’s not complicated and it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, but every inch of this experience was clearly crafted with passion and talent. The intense firefights, expansive arsenal, metal music, and sprawling level designs all come together to make Prodeus feel like a game that’s just the right mix of retro and modern. If you have ever been a fan of Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, or any of the indie boomer shooters of the last few years, you owe it to yourself to give Prodeus a shot. Even if you haven’t much been into the genre before, we’d say this is an excellent place to jump in and see what it’s about. Wherever you stand, we’d give Prodeus a strong recommendation; this is absolutely worth both your time and money.

Prodeus is an unashamedly loud and brash FPS that manages to put a true modern twist on the retro shooter.

If you want a very artistically and technically accomplished Doom clone, Prodeus absolutely delivers. Support for fan-made levels can potentially expand your experience somewhat but the option to create your own is missing from this version. Performance on Switch isn’t flawless but it is still very playable and looks great the whole time. While it struggles to find its own identity along the way, and comes off more as an elaborate mod or a fan game than a title of its own, Prodeus does still stand as a solid though unoriginal shooter.

If you want to scratch that retro Doom FPS itch, Prodeus could be just the game to do it for you. The Switch version is inferior to other platforms hence even more retro, but the true magic lies within its fast-paced gameplay and lots of enemies to cut through with a flashy arsenal. If you like games like these, give Prodeus a chance.

A tribute to the early days of FPS. It's a must for anyone who was a fan of DOOM, Duke Nukem, and others in the 90s.

The graphics are top notch, giving a gloriously gritty look that mimics the oldschool sprite based shooters of yesteryear, and at the same time giving a modern sheen to things that really fits nicely with the aesthetic. And then there's that Andrew Hulshult soundtrack, WHOA BABY! In my opinion it's the retro FPS of the year on Switch. Full Review »
