As a hard core fan of the pokemon series this was a major disappointment. the fact that they cut so many key features to appeal to a demographic of people that downloaded the app simply because they had a phone. Main stream features that have been in the series since day one have since been scrapped because the kids couldn't understand it. honestly quite sad to see such a series fall.

On the other hand this games step back on a lot of other mechanics: deformed art style, day-night cycle removed, all the competitive aspects of the game has been removed (abilities, breeding, items). I don't care about the target of these games but in my eyes this is unacceptable and a symptom of laziness on GF's part.
I don't want GF to hold my hand during the entire game, i want challenge. They should have made a game where competitive is accessible by more people, they should have introduced mechanics to make the training of competitive pokemon faster. i don't want to talk about pokeball plus and GO connectivity, i think they are garbage.
I feel GF is making fun of us veterans, i can't see anything of what i love about pokemon in these games which recycle an old region, only add a few new mechanics and trashes a lot of consolidated mechanics from 20 years of franchise.
I think I'll play Zelda BOTW since i didn't finish it, perhaps i'll start master mode (yes GF that is a game, and i'm not talking about the open world, i am talking about the technical aspects of that game, if pokemon ever reached that level i would be the happiest man in the world. I know it will never happen but dreaming is beautiful). I'm waiting with pleasure the 2019 titles with little hope for a change compared to the last years.

Too simplistic to appeal to veterans of the series and too needlessly patronizing and handholdy to serve as a meaningful introduction to the series for new players rather than a frustrating and superficial one, Let's Go can only be described as an unsolicited stripped down version of what already is one of the most newcomer-friendly series on the market and a walking contradiction failing to entice anybody by trying to excessively cater to only one side of the new/veteran spectrum. Abilities, Items, Wild Encounters, Traditional Catching, Breeding, and most notably any Pokemon not part of the original 151 are not present in the game and alternatives to act as a substitute are mostly not provided or do not feel substantial enough to warrant the change in the first place. Additions that weren't present in Yellow are very scarce compared to other remakes and even then they are mostly friviolities that while cutesy and cheerful they don't suffice to quell the irritation caused by the game's barren and unchanged Kanto trying to ride on the coattails of nostalgia out of rapacious greed instead of attempting to improve the experience. This is honestly a spit on the face to fans of the franchise. Charging $60usd for literally Pokemon Yellow with HD graphics does not seem like a good business decision on Gamefreak's end. There's less content than FireRed and LeafGreen, take that into consideration.

Can I ask what the **** the people who are rating this a 10 are smoking? And can I have some

The game has taken major steps back, looks like an upscaled 3DS game, removes many of the mechanics of a Pokémon Game, and simply doesn't know who it's trying to target. The game is 'comfy', but it's sure as hell not worth its price. Oh and Mew is locked behind a 50$ paywall because Gamefreak is

    BADDY BAD!

    1) Horrible aesthetics: outdated graphics, recycled animations for both pokemon and human NPC's, iconic pokemon didn't get their battle animations fixed (pikachu moving on the z axis, not even hopping, for kicking moves and floaty fall; blastoise shooting water from his forehead instead of using its cannons). 2) Lame OST: Generic orchestral arrangements that don't even reach

    2) Lame OST: Generic orchestral arrangements that don't even reach the quality of fan made remixes that can be found on YouTube.
    3) Performance issues: FPS drops when there are too many pokemon in the screen or during co-op despite the subpar visuals.
    4) Boring campaign: The game gives you no reason to use other pokemon than your starter to get through battles, as it can stomp on everything you find. Probably why some parts of the game require you to have caught a number of pokemon to advance or get something extra. You have out of your way to lose in this game. No challenge whatsoever. No gratification.
    5) Assumes kids are stupid: Probably the most terrible aspect of this game. It's aimed at children, but doesn't try to stimulate them in any way. It's thoroughly condescending from the very beginning, from the lack of suitable challenges for them to the constant, over the top hand holding. CHILDREN ARE YOUNG, NOT STUPID. Seriously, giving this game to a child is insulting their intelligence. Pokemon Let's Go is all about instant, fake gratification and the reason it teaches is "You're too stupid to learn and get better at things, but don't worry! Making any sort of effort is bad!" Most likely detrimental for any kid's development.
    6) Full Price game that has less content than remakes of the same games that came out over a decade ago: Kanto is exactly the same. Scarce post game. Scarce online features which require a paid subscription to be accessed.
    7) Confusing design philosophy: Junichi Masuda has stated that these games have been simplified because kids play games on their smartphones now. He has also stated that Let's Go is aimed at kids because they haven't been able to play go, as they don't have smartphones. You also need a smartphone to unlock and evolve Meltan and Melmetal. So what is it, mr. Masuda?
    8) Just straight out disappointing: A lot of long time pokemon fans have dreamed about the day there would be a pokemon game on a home console. GF's debut on a system like that has shown poor graphics, poor gameplay, cut content, and general blatant laziness in development.

To sum up: Pokemon Let's Go is a $60 console game which believes kids are stupid, has had little effort put on it, and tries to hide its faults behind confusing and contradicting statements. NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY!

    - The graphics are on par with XY/ORAS games, not even SM when it could easily be Pokken since the switch is able to handle it
    - Paid online, which said paid online removes features like wonder trade and GTS
    - $50 toy and trading are the only way to get Mew legitimately when HGSS gave players a very similar toy with the game and didn’t make it impossible to 100% the game without someone

    - $50 toy and trading are the only way to get Mew legitimately when HGSS gave players a very similar toy with the game and didn’t make it impossible to 100% the game without someone paying extra
    - Similarly, the only way to get Gengar, Alakazam, Golem/Golem-A, and Machamp are though trading (the likes of which is harder do to previous factors and that the fact that 2 switches are required) or by playing Pokemon GO on a smart phone where you catch hundreds of Pokemon in that line or walk/drive thousands of kilometers while its on or getting lucky with encounters
    - Several animations are literally copy&pasted from SM
    - Blastoise, a flagship pokemon, still shoots hydro pump from its forehead
    - Many Pokemon just move on the axis during attack animations
    - Aerodactyl in the museum is literally just an aerodactyl model and no modifications to make it appear as a skeleton
    - Gym Requirements break traditional nuzlocke rules just so that GameFreak had a lazy way to make the game easier
    - The one of the downsides of having a Mega on a Pokemon, being the item they hold preventing you from hold other items, is now gone, and there is no downside to using most megas like Alakazam, Slowbro, Gengar, Charizard-Y, Blastoise, ect.
    - Because of how AVs work, the EVs of these games, everything is bulkier than what they were in Gen 2, likely being less balanced than Gen 2 and 3
    - Co-op makes battles 2v1s in your favor and offers nothing else in gameplay when the possibilities are infinite
    - The Champion has a Jolteon with 3 moves, 2 of which are Quick Attack and Pin Missile
    - In fact, the Champion only has 3 moves for each Pokemon
    - So do many Master Trainers
    - Some master trainers will have a flying type with a ground type move
    - Since there is a Master Trainer for every Pokemon, you will need a living dex or fight the NFE Pokemon first even though they are post game
    - Chikorita to Zeraora are all missing entirely. No transfer from the real mainline games or even GO
    - With the former, many Gen 2 and Gen 4 cross evolutions are gone
    - No Day and Night cycle what so ever
    - You can run from trainers
    - Wild Battles are now just GO like catching
    - EXP Share can’t be turned off at all
    - With how hard they deliberately made making competitive teams, the Nintendo Switch is now more likely to be hacked as no one is realisticly going to build a legitimate team
    - With how hard the games are and how many Gen 1 references there are, the games are somehow meant for little japanese kids
    - Despite what paid shills have said, Musada says he hope the future of Pokemon is more like LGPE
    - It took them 5 years to let you ride Kangaskahn, and your starter is the one in its pouch
    - Machamp doesn’t princess carry you even though it did in SM

I'd read so many negative things online on Twitter and elsewhere, and I was still determined to enjoy it in spite of the evidence before my eyes "because it's cute", "because it's Kanto", "because nostalgia". And I did, at first. Meeting Pikachu for the 'first' time, Pikachu meeting MC's Mom, was all very cute, but then it dwindled.

After the first half dozen or so Pokemon encounters, the process felt repetitive. A half dozen later, it felt like a chore. I figured I could get by with just catching what I intended to use, but no. The game enforces capture quotas for you to continue past certain points.I would honestly prefer mindless fetch-quests over this.

I stopped playing. No amount of willpower to enjoy it made me enjoy it. Pokemon has been part of my life since childhood, and the loyalty that roots in you still wasn't enough to make me enjoy this insulting cash-grab of a game.

I am genuinely disappointed that someone else wasted their money on this in my name.

One can only wonder how much was paid to those 37 critics for "generally favorable reviews", because my experience left me with barely anything positive to say.

Oh, yeah, and I forgot the reuse of animations, models and looks like textures too. At this point I'd preffer just to wait and emulate it on Yuzu or the other Switch emulator. Doesn't look that bad though, but the shadows are just a pixelated mess, and the animation to run just feels off, and then the fps drops.
Well, let's take this as a beta test for the next Switch game.

Common excuse? The lower budget then. Which makes no sense for a $60 game. This should have cost $25, and instead what we got is a full priced release that better not be a preview of what's to come in the next year.
To top it all off, this is using a basically upscaled port of the engine used on the 3DS, as this does not offer graphics worthy of a home console game (even for a Pokémon game, this could have a much more interesting, detailed overworld), and yet it STILL manages to have its framerate dip at times.

Truly, a disaster that better not set a precedent for the upcoming titles, sold at more than twice the price it's actually worth. Keep that in mind when reading reviews from the press, who didn't have to pay for this title.

And yes, its a kids game, but Nintendo themselves advertised it as a game "to keep veterans on their toes". Which is ridiculous.
Region got recycled for the 7th time, character animations got recycled from the 3DS models, which feels lazy. The battle animations are also extremely unimpressive considering the switch has very high potential in that regard. The frequent frame drops the game has are inexcusable for a 2018 game. As for the new additions:
Catching mons with motion controls feels klunky and bugs out often. Proper targetted catching can be bought for an additional 50$ and the Pokeball Plus is an absolute nightmare for controlling your character outside of the catching process.
Arbitrary requirements to enter gyms are now present, with one of them forcing your to enter a gym overleveled. Thanks for spoonfeeding me, Nintendo.
It is a pretty game. But thats about it. Not worth the 60$, and very disappointing for Pokemons grand entrance on the switch.

-Back to fixed camera despite the switch now having dual analog sticks.

-co-op player can't interact with anything.
    -all battles become a 2v1 instead of a 2v2 when in co-op.
-Returning to Chibi models of XY.
-Less character customization than both SM and XY.
-Battle animations that are worse than Pokemon Stadium, a 20 year old game.
-Tons of cut corners for overworld character animations (some walk like robots in only 90 degrees, some just do a static jump to convey an action like hand chopping, some just have an emote quote bubble above their heads instead of giving them facial animations).
-Motion controls are forced despite portable mode not having it.
-You still can't skip cutscenes, only the very few CGI movies in the game
-Copy-pasted the story from Yellow but edited some parts to make it worse, like your "Friendly Rival".
-Instead of reimagining the region, they copied it 1:1 and just gave it a graphical paint job
-low effort "Master Trainers" being the only post game and is the most tedious grind in the entire franchise
-Legendaries feel like checklists instead of explorative hunts because they didn't change ANYTHING
-Instead of giving Mew its own in-game quest, they force you to buy a $50 useless peripheral

The only TWO postives about the game are them changing random encounters to physical encounters (which they should've done a long time ago) and following/riding pokemon. Both could have been done better though. The former has pokemon popping out of thin air so it feels unnatural and the latter just feel like robots that follow behind you except for the occasional scripted event where it "finds" an item. Riding pokemon just feel like a sprite swap with increased speed. It feels nothing like riding a horse in BotW. And it's annoying how they disppear every time you go near an NPC or ledge.

These games are absolutely terrible and the fact that it's getting such positive reception makes me fear where the future of the franchise is headed. Whatever happened to standards?

    What's terrible about it? Well

What's terrible about it? Well there's so much that it's really hard to say for certain, but I have to be honest, its worst, and most heinous crime is being boring. Fantastically amazingly boring. Beyond that, the game has removed features that have been a series staple for 16 years, items, abilities, and about 656 monsters, most of which I really like. What did we get in its place? Watered down, milquetoast Pokemon Yellow. Yellow was 20 years ago and by virtue of its limitations still quite charming. This is anything but. Every two out of three balls will miss, guaranteed, wasting time, wasting money. The few quality of life features the games do have are overshadowed by the game's major problems. Additionally if you are familiar with Pokemon go, the rules for a monster fleeing are different, and can happen anytime instead of just after a failed catch.

But why is it important to give this game a bad reputation? Because this laziness, this pandering to the lowest common denominator could become the way the rest of the series is. Imagine Pokemon 9 with even less new monsters than XY or Sun and Moon, with more restrictive movement than Final Fantasy XII. That's what this game could portend. However, maybe Morimoto will be the director from now on. Fire Musada and promote Morimoto

Another thing that they did was remove the Safari Zone, and you can tell that this seems to have been done late in game development because they didn't replace the dialog for a lot of NPCs in Fuchsia City. I played all of the GameBoy (Original/Color/Advance) games and I found this title to not live up to expectations. Another somewhat annoying thing is that you can't skip the credits when you beat the Elite Four, so grinding them to reach level 100 isn't going to be any fun. If this was a $30 title with the previously listed issues, I would probably rate this game 7/10 mostly for nostalgia's sake. I have been playing Pokémon for the last 20 years, and this game is a disgrace to the franchise. The game's director,I have been playing Pokémon for the last 20 years, and this game is a disgrace to the franchise. Now, don't get me wrong, this game does have entertainment value, but absolutely not worth the $110 for this game plus Mew. The months leading up to this game's release have been the most confusing times prior to anything I've ever seen revolving around a video game. The game's director, Junichi Masuda, has made so many claims that all refute each other in terms of the target audience.

The games take place in Kanto, so there is no reason to market this game to younger children because they don't have nostalgia for Kanto.

Yet, he said this game was for kids that weren't able to play Pokemon GO due to not having cell phones.

Yet, still, the only way to obtain Meltan and Mew are through playing Pokemon GO and buying a $50 peripheral respectively. Not things his claimed target audience are going to be able to do.

He has stated that Let's Go is also intended to get younger players introduced into the more mainline games, yet on the same token, has said that younger players don't have the attention spans for complex video games like Pokemon anymore.

These conflicting claims aside, there have been a lot of decisions in respect to the gameplay that point to a low-effort release, but I'll highlight the positive aspects first.

    - First, the removal of wild battles. This was a controversial move, but not inherently bad. I understand this change, and why it was made for these titles specifically, as the players coming over from GO are going to be most familiar with these mechanics (but I thought the target audience was kids who didn't get to play GO? Hmm...)

    - Secondly, wild encounters are no longer random, but happen in the overworld. For me, this is a welcome change, as it helps the setting feel more alive.

    - Thirdly, pokemon can follow you and allow you to ride them. Something fans have been asking about since Black and White.

But here's where the games fall short:

    - The games only have the original 151, plus the new mythical, Meltan and Melmetal. All the other pokemon have been removed.

    - The difficulty of the game is nonexistent. Gyms have prerequisites, one of which is that you are stronger than the gym leader before you challenge it.

    - The new height system for pokemon means absolutely nothing. The models don't scale depending on how big the pokemon is, all are the same size regardless of what the game tells you.

    - Abilities, held items, several moves and eggs have been outright removed from the game.

    - EV's have been removed from the game, but the stats you CANNOT control, such as IV's, remains.

    - You play as a new character to the pokemon franchise, yet there is no customization, unlike the previous two generations as well as GO.

    - Animations and models have not improved in the 5 years since X and Y came out. Most pokemon still stand around as if they are just waiting to get hit.

    - Pokemon Amie (the petting and nurturing mini-game from the past two generations) does not exist for any pokemon besides your partner pokemon.

While these games are intensely flawed, overall, yes, this game has entertainment value best suited for small children. I would rate this game much higher than a 0 if it were already clear that this is a game best suited for children, but the Kanto pandering of these games has muddied up who this game is really meant for. If you are a grown man reading this review, who is not satisfied with the qualities this game possesses, please, do not buy it. This game is perfectly suited for a child who would otherwise need help during the course of a normal pokemon game. If you are willing to spend $60 on a game for a child's birthday, this is not a bad way to go, but do not feel obligated to buy strictly because you are a pokemon fan. You are missing very little.

So if you are planning to buy this, don´t be fooled, while is not as bad as some of the negative reviews say, it is definitely not a good Pokémon game. Expand

This game represents the future that Game Freak wants to take the franchise and its commitment destroying the fanbase that supported Pokémon for more than 20 years in favor of Pokémon GO players. The biggest mistake of this game is the simple fact that it exists.

This game is abysmal and its only mission is to pander to nostalgia cravings and GO fans and it's honestly offensive to people who love franchise for the story and gameplay of traditional games.

Well, this game is pure garbage. Why? Because you can't battle wild pokemon as always, you're forced to do the **** PoGo mechanic. Also, there aren't abilities. It's the same **** game from 1996 but much worse. I hope the 2019 game to be better because this is a shame to de Pokemon franchise

Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are ridiculously easy games that cannot be lost under any circumstances, to the point that it's difficult to really call them games. Experience share cannot be turned off resulting in the player always being incredibly higher level than their opponents, and if they got any ideas about doing something earlier than before they would have a 100% chance of success, the game will outright prevent them, requiring players to have the tools needed to easily beat every boss before they fight them. Catching Pokemon is now a mindless affair that has players throw balls at Pokemon as they put up no resistance whatsoever, effectively turning the entire game into the Safari Zone from previous titles.

The game is a remake of the original Pokemon Red and Blue that offers nothing of its own, instead dumbing down an already easy game to the point of unplayability. You don't have to be a skilled gamer to be appalled at the lack of challenge in these games, as there is so little challenge that there is no real gameplay as the game plays itself, with the "player" as more of a spectator. Nearly all advances the series has made have been left in the dust in the attempt to make the game appeal to a more casual audience. The Pokemon Company has deleted abilities, held items, and over half of the moves in the Pokemon franchise's extensive library seemingly at random. Only generation one Pokemon are present in the game, as the game pretends that the advances the series has made in the past 22 years don't exist. The gameboy advance remakes of Red and Blue, Fire Red and Leaf Green, were far more respectful to the franchise as a whole, as well as having any semblance of difficulty.

One time, when I was 7 years old, my parents promised to throw me an amazing birthday party. Then two days before my birthday I got a bad grade on an exam and got grounded for a week, the whole birthday thing went down the toilet. I thought that would be the most disappointing moment of my life.
    Then I played this game.

The controls (at least on handheld) are wonky as hell and barely work, I can't run down without using the Pokeball, every encounter feels like catching a legendary without the charm, the story is somehow both a remake of Yellow and a sequel to Red/Green/Blue, so it looks like everyone is an absolute moron by redoing everything the exact same way, there are no more wild battles, meaningThe controls (at least on handheld) are wonky as hell and barely work, I can't run down without using the Pokeball, every encounter feels like catching a legendary without the charm, the story is somehow both a remake of Yellow and a sequel to Red/Green/Blue, so it looks like everyone is an absolute moron by redoing everything the exact same way, there are no more wild battles, meaning grinding is entirely money- and luck-dependent, everything is super easy and it insults everyone's intelligence with the handholding being somehow worse than Gen VII, and the characters are a real downgrade from the original. Oak is now a dick by making a joke about forgetting his grandson's name, "Trace" is a poor man's Hat and Green put together (and I hated Hau personally), Green is back for some reason and they changed him too much for that point in his development, and nothing has been improved. There are no more held items nor Abilities (which FireRed and LeafGreen had), the new moves are laughably bad (like the infamous Baddy Bad), the over reliance on charm means every other aspects were overlooked, and I personally did not like the Go mechanics from the ground up, even though that was also a mess in general.

Did this game do good things? Sure. The Master Trainers are a neat idea (though I feel they went overboard with every single Pokémon having one, meaning for the most part you have to stop them from evolving and feed them candies for the postgame), Blue being canon is nice though ultimately unnecessary, rematching the Gym Leaders is cool (even though it's not the first game to do so), and I guess the Pokémon following you again was nice (though not a deal maker/breaker for me). But those positives are vastly outclassed by negatives that are a lot more essential in a game. The controls barely work, but hey look at that Pikachu's clothes! It's just hiding your head in the sand.

This game is GAMEFREAK's way of delaying the main series game while making money until 2019. Those who bought this fell into their traps and are "encouraging" and allowing them to make mediocre games.

What new content? What graphics? Look at Zelda BOTW. THAT is a switch game. This is a 3Ds game on steroids.

The fact that you can longer battle wild pokemons automatically makes this a different game. I like how every Pokemon in the group gets exp though. Nice graphic. Expected a bit more of the game. Maybe a bit more story and a bit more little side challenges. Not asking for a lot. If I had got the game for $10, I would have gave it a 8. At premium price, this game is garbage.

Why is there still no options to setup the difficulty as I like it? They could for example have listened to the Pokemon fanbase and build in options for Nuzlock runs where one even could configure the details of it. Instead we get a boiled down version that is even more basic than the original Pokemon Yellow. This was a waste of money. Expand

Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to get rid of battling pokemon??? are you kidding me? you spend years, literal years, defending catching these things and you up and decide to throw your morals out and get rid of it? who does that? that's like fighting for a cure to cancer, finding it and saying "welp time to throw this out nobody needs it". I played the thing for like a 2 weeks, put it down cause i got bored and never picked it up again. I can't decide whether to throw it away or burn it because i don't want anyone playing it if i can help it. I work at walmart and the dang thing sits untouched in the glass case i swear let's go pikachu hasn't been touched in 9 months. Let's go eevee was only worth it because of the frickin eevee. I had to start making my own rules for the game just so i wouldn't get bored. I am so glad that sword and shield came out and have battles in them as far as i can tell because we can hopefully forget about this crap piece of game and let it die in the dust. Great for kids yeah but extremely infurating to me. I don't even play competitive. If it had battles i would have no complaints but no frickin no it left me feeling hollow and like all the pokemon i caught weren't even worth it. Another thing is the fricking forced catching the game makes you do, i literally caught a bellsprout and released it after i made it into brock's gym just because screw that piece of crap. The rule's are great as an idea but horrid in exicution and i dare you to tell me it was "fun" because i will debate you till morning come and tell you it wasn't. This game is bad. Now who is it good for? Families. There are good ideas in it and such but it is just a family game. The company may say it's a core game but i will never count it as such nor do i even want to remember it's existance. I got it as a christmas present because i didn't wanna play it and guess what? I was right. about it all. unequivically right. Now if you're a parent that wants to bond with your child sure go play it but the co-op is terrible and it's completely simplified and base-line. They ripped out every bit of challenge from it and i basically beat the game with my eevee while the other pokemon road on its coat-tails, which i got rid of when i went to face the champion because i never needed them. I hope sword and shield are good because literally nothing else could have been worse than this, even games that are literally made to be a joke are better than this joke of a game. Step up game freak. step up. Expand

A simple, nostalgic return to the Kanto region, offers little if you are a series veteran eager for complexity and challenge. But if that's not your main interest, Pokemon Let's Go has it all! It's a simple, cute and fun game that will keep you hooked for hours. An excellent starting point for newcomers, and a great nostalgia trip for those in a search for one.

It’s hard to make sense of the game that’s basically a Switch port of iOS/Android remake of Pokemon Red/Green. Is it a step forward, step backward – or maybe just a shameless cash-in? Turns out, it’s a great remake – the world looks exactly as we imagined it back when we were staring at black and white pixels of original Red/Green. [Issue#235, p.44]
