The joycons are not the best motion controllers ever made and in Pokemon Let's Go they're really frustrating. I'll explain. To level up in this game, battle trainers is not very effective. Encounters with wild pokemons doesn't turn in to a battle (if you didn't know it yet), is a throw a pokeball and good luck, just like the mobile game, Pokemon Go. Here is the problem, most of the Pokemons moves like crazy all over the screen, and with awful motion controllers like the joycons, is way too hard to throw the pokeball to a side of the screen (and when you want to throw it to the center of the screen, the pokeball goes to one side, it doesn't make any sense). And that's it, you NEED to master the Pokemon catch if you want to play this well, and that is very very very frustating. Of course, you can play it in portable mode and throw in pokeballs is not that hard, but I want to play Pokemon in my big TV for the first time. Great remake, bad decision to make motion controller mandatory. They screw it the entire game with that. Expand

I got exactly what I was expecting with a few changes here and there. The main story, collecting the badges, and facing the elite four are all typical of what I would expect of a Pokemon game, and I don't really have any complaints apart from the atrocious throwing mechanic which pretty much forces you to play hand-held if you want to be able to catch anything. If that were the only issue, this game would have a higher score from me, but, sadly, there is a GLARING problem that comes in post-game.

In all other main-name Pokemon games before this one, you have the option to fight wild pokemon in order to grind experience. This game is missing that. It might not seem that big of a deal until you get to the post-game content where EVERYTHING from Mewtwo to the Master Trainers are significantly higher level than the elite four you just defeated. Normally, that would be fine, fun even because it's an extra challenge, but not when they have effectively removed the main source of grinding levels: battling wild pokemon. Now, you are forced to chain-catch the same pokemon over and over again in order to gain experience, which also doesn't seem like a big deal, until you factor in seveal things:

1.) You have no control over which Pokemon shows up. So you could be trying to chain-catch one particular pokemon, but it might go from appearing every few seconds to never appearing at all.

2.) If the Pokemon DOES appear and it's not either Huge or Tiny, it gives very little experience when you catch it.

3.) If you don't catch the pokemon with the VERY first throw of your Pokeball, the experience you get from catching it is lowered significantly. That means, if it breaks out of the ball even once, you lose experience. And you can only get decent experience post-game by catching VERY high level pokemon, which means your chances of catching ANY of them on the first ball is slim.

4.) If you don't get either a "Great" or an "Excellent" throw, the experience you get from catching it is lowered significantly.

5.) If you get a chain going, and the pokemon you're trying to catch runs away before you can catch it, it breaks your chain and you have to start all over.

In other words, they have turned the ONLY means of getting decent experience into a chore. The only other way to gain experience post-game is by re-battling gym leaders and challenging the elitor four again, but the experience you get from those things is negligible at best. Just to put it into perspective, I wanted to raise a Dratini post-game so that I could have a better chance of defeating Mewtwo. I challenged Brock's gym to see how much experience the Dratini would get from the battle. It was level 27, and by the end of Brock's fight, the Dratini had gone up a measly ONE level. So it would take literally months of challenging gym leaders every day to get the Dratini to the level I need it to fight Mewtwo.

The game is okay if you only want to beat the main story, but they have effectively made end-game content a chore, not fun.

It’s infuriating to see something so long awaited and with so much potential, falling short on crucial gameplay standards set by previous, older entries in the series: you can now freely move your Pokémon from your team to your PC without having to visit a Pokémon Center, but you can’t look for a specific Pokémon to trade online (GTS has been completely removed). You can see Pokémon in the wild without having to engage in multiple random battles hoping to see the one you’re looking for, yet you cannot battle them -nor make eggs to breed your own (the egg breeding system has been removed). The experience sharing is surprisingly perfectly balanced, yet 90% of the battles with trainers end up being a “press A to win” fest, removing any kind of strategical thinking whatsoever present in previous titles, which is made worse by the fact that 95% of the trainers never have more than three Pokémon to use in battles and they are almost always repeated in set of three of the same species, making it even easier to win by spamming the same move without even having to think. On top of that, the day/night cycle is gone, along with weather changes and abilities. Pokémon can no longer even hold items and berries.

The game has the best graphics ever seen by the series as a whole, and that’s pretty much the only thing it has going for it. It’s really pretty to look at, but reveals itself to be an extremely linear (much more so than previous games) experience from beginning to end, lacking a lot of the complex game mechanics we’ve come to know and learn throughout the years. On top of that, the game presents some truly idiotic game design choices which I find absolutely baffling in a 2018 title. Gone are all the quality of life changes we’ve come to love from Sun and Moon. Every single action requires you to navigate a menu and manually select whatever action you want to take: for example, if you choose to ride your Charizard, you’ll have to open the menu, select team, then make charizard follow you. This makes you go pretty fast, but also makes you unable to interact with anything on the ground or surmount certain obstacles. It would be great if you could just press a button to dismount charizard in a matter of 1 or two seconds, yet, you are required to open the menu again, select team and select another Pokémon to follow you, which makes Charizard go back into his pokeball and consequently enabling you to interact once again with the environment. A simple action that should take 2 seconds at best takes now 10 seconds because of idiotic and archaic game design, which again, after seeing all the improvements made from previous games, simply baffles me.

Let’s go can be seen as perfect remake of Yellow, throwing 20 years of improvements in the trash and going back to lacking every single thing that Yellow also lacked. Don’t forget that Pokémon Yellow came out in the 90s, though, while Let’s Go came out in 2018. There simply exist no justification for all the things missing in this game. Will it hit your nostalgia hard? Sure, it will. Some of the moments you’ll be presented with will have a chance to make you tear up, depending on how much you loved and grew up with the original game. Once those moments are gone though, you’ll realize how shallow and hollow this game really is, making the original from the 90s seem at times more feature packed and thought out than this one.

Let’s Go comes with a lot of shortcomings. Whether you’ll be able to get past them is up to you and your love of the series. OG fans like me will surely give it a try, but not doubt, they’ll end up being disappointed. Sad to say, but this is not a Pokémon game to be taken seriously, and it angers me that Kanto was chosen to be the protagonist of this half assed, lazy “remake”. I can only hope they will learn the lesson for the eventual Let’s Go Gold and Silver.

While random battles were cumbersome to many, the outright removal of them alltogether may appear very jarring to returning players, especially with the lack of an option to turn wild battles on or off. Controls are another confusing addition, requiring players to use one Joy Con controller when in Docked Mode without any alternative options. While this is made for the Go inspired capture mechanic, the feature is at best mixed, with numerous pokeballs wasted for little reason.

For all the positives and negatives Let's Go provides, the highest I can give it is a 5/10. For some players, Let's Go will be very fun. Others will loathe the forced changes to the Pokemon formula. As a recommendation however, do not listen to those claiming these are perfect or the absolute worst games in the series. Let's Go is neither. These games are a moderately adequate return to Kanto, with changes to the traditional formula that will be a joy or pain depending on the individual player.

Honestly I like the game. The graphics are a nice update... I do wish they had given all the Pokemon real "voices" instead of just a few (it's jarring when Pikachu or Eevee have an voice, but everything else just get random blast of noise that hasn't changed gameboy of the 90s)...
However I can't get away from the fact that I HATE the Pokemon go style capture system. With an absolute passion.

Black/White 1 and 2 which had the battle subway, musical hall, engaging stories, secret legendaries, and a tournament to fight dozens of series icons, along with triple and rotation battles. All of these games were $40 with tons of features. The you look at Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. There is no depth to this game, it is repetitive, and while there are dozens of hours of gameplay it never truly changes up or gets more challenging. The game holds your hand the entire way through, it is extremely easy and honestly, there is very little reason to play it. The only reason to get this game is out of a lack of contest, there is no other traditional Pokemon game on the Switch. The game is going to sell well regardless due to the fact it is a Pokemon game and the Switch has such a high install base. Kids will enjoy this I'm sure, but if you want a Pokemon game with more depth, challenge, and replay-ability, tell Gamefreak by voting with your wallet by not buying this game. On the other hand, if you just enjoy the world of Pokemon and don't care about the mechanics of it and want a fun casual game you can relax and enjoy on your tv or on the go, then I would recommend this. All in all this game is not a disappointment, they advertised EXACTLY what it was from the get go. A casual game meant for casual gamers, newcomers to Pokemon, and young children or adults who grew up with Pokemon to play with their own kids. I can't fault this game for not being something it was never advertised as, a game with depth, compelling story, characters, and gameplay. HOWEVER, I can fault it for calling itself a main line Pokemon title priced above all those before it with not even a third of the content that those games had, yet is priced at 1/3 times the price. This game is a rip-off price-wise, I would not recommend paying this amount of money no matter the type of 'gamer'/fan you are. Wait for it to possibly go down in price, because in the end, you really aren't missing much. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positives:
Seeing Pokemon on the over world is cool but outside of the lets go style of games that focus on singular gens, i wouldn't expect to see in future titles.
The motion controls when i used them worked decently.
Some of the gyms get a makeover for the better, Blaine's gym in particular comes to mind.
Access to the PC anywhere is cool i wouldn't say its a game changer though.

    Negatives:
There is nothing new for long time fans.
Catching the same Pokemon over and over again to grind for exp is pretty tedious and battles are not much better as the game really gives you no real reason to not use your partner Pikachu. The Go inspired catching mechanics are not great as it feels like there is really not much you can do to increase your odds of catching Pokemon. This feeling is at its worst when facing a legendary Pokemon and/or snorlax as the game forces you to tire them out with a battle which has a 5 minute time limit for some reason. if you win you get to attempt a capture. However the battling phase feels entirely pointless as the Pokemon does not seemed to be affected by the battle. Connection with Pokemon go is another not well thought out part as you have to recapture anything you transfer over, these are not instant or even easy catches in most cases, forcing you to waste resources. Also for whatever reason the Pokemon you transfer over can run away, there not gone forever in fact they're right where you encounter them. Which begs the question why can they run in the first place.

    The Worst:
My biggest problem with the game comes in the form of Meltan. To get Meltan you have to transfer a pokemon from go to lets go (Which you cannot transfer back into go.) after doing this you get an item in go, using said item will spawn meltan for 30 minutes. after the 30 minutes you have to wait 7 days to reopen it which requires you to transfer more pokemon after the 7 day period. Then you can transfer meltan into lets go however there is no way to evolve Meltan in lets go. This is a problem because Meltan takes 400 candies to evolve in go and walking with Meltan takes 20km to get a single candy. I caught 10 Meltans on my first opening of the box which is 30 candies, so to get the optional dex entry for Melmetal you have to waste probably months catching Meltans and then do the one way transfer into lets go. .

Now nothing against Junichi Masuda, but he is totally disconnected to what Pokemon was about, I'm not trying to wear rose tinted nostalgia goggles when I say this but Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are his take on Generation 1 and it shows that he doesn't even know anything that made Generation 1 such a great experience. They could of remedied this by implementing a wild battle system with the Pokemon Go catching system in place but it was either one or the other and with that all wild battles were axed. Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee could of also benefited from the designers making it less streamlined than it already was, Pokemon Red and Blue aren't the most complicated games in the world and they are very linear RPG's, making them more streamlined is more insulting rather than making it look like the developers are holding your hand through the game. There was a lot right in Let's Go like the music re compositions and seeing wild Pokemon on the over world like just like how Pokemon Ranger had them, following Pokemon are back from Heart Gold and Soul Silver but with all of these nice compliments I can give it, it fails at being something everyone can enjoy which was Masuda's intention with this title as people who are into Pokemon are going to probably shrug this game off as a babies first Pokemon game, casuals are going to find the games difficulty insultingly easy deeming it boring, and the kids who were once our age when we played Pokemon Red and Blue are going to completely ignore Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee and play there Fortnite and Minecraft. If you can look past these issues I have brought up with Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee than you'll probably enjoy it more than I did or if your a beginner who wants to get into this series may I recommend you play a vastly superior title like Heart Gold and Soul Silver and then work your way to play the other games in this franchise. Because of this i won't go deeply in the competitive side of pokemon. I'm a competitive player myself, but this game exaggeratedly damages competitive battling with just the removal of abilities, items and moves in an unnecessary attempt to simplify the game. The game is a remake of Pokemon Yellow and takes us back again to Kanto. The graphics of the game are appealing and well done, thanks to the Switch system, the games can really shine much more than they could in the 3DS. However the same can't be said about the OST and some animations. The OST isn't really that bad it's just mediocre, the OST is mostly the same tracks the original gameboy games had but played with violins. Animations for 3D NPCs in the overworld have always been lazily performed and barely changed from the Sun&Moon games, in fact most animations are reused assets from the previous titles. Some move animations like thunderbolt have been updated and have new refreshing visuals but the rest of moves (95%) still have disappointing animations like they did in previus 3DS titles.
The gameplay is fine and the story is barely changed from the original gen 1 games, even though the gen 1 games story sucked, the emphasis the let's go games puts in some moments makes it somewhat acceptable. When it comes to difficulty the game isn't that easy as it was expected to be, if you are not a new player, don't use overleveled pokemon and disable automatic switches in the game options, if you do this the game can be hard enough, even though the pokemon games have never been too hard actually, some pokemon have always been bad when it comes to moves, stats and typings, the candy mechanics can make your pokemon too powerful so the best thing to do is just to use them on pokemon that are weak like non-mega beedrill, or pokemon that you caught with bad IVs. There is one thing that is kind of a double edged sword, this is the following pokemon function. What could possibly be bad about this? Evryone likes to have following pokemon back, and you can finally mount on some of them! The bad thing is the automatic friendship gain with having pokemon outside of the pokeball. The Pokemon amie has been removed (kind of a stupid move, just to centralize eevee and pikachu playing mode), so how do you make pokemon that aren't pikachu/eevee adore you and automatically use insanely broken tactics in combat? With the following function. What that means is that if you don't want your pokemon to be overpowered because of friendship you are forced to not have following pokemon nor mounts(damaging the only source of fast movement). There are no field moves like cut in these game, just like the previous titles, even though these time is your pokemon who cuts/surfs/flies/etc it's done in a kind of stupid way but it's just fine. The game having some alola references, certain dialogues, and updates moves and types are the only references you'll find to other games, overall nothing too special like always. The Post-Game is non-existant besides the fact that they have something called master trainers who are just a bunch of boring battles to show how "good" you are with a certain pokemon. I must say that this is the first game where i have fully completed the pokedex, a popular post-game sugestion for pokemon players is to try to "catch'em all" which was something usually too hard and tedious. With the shortened pokedex and the faster catching system you can actually try to complete the pokedex (easier with someone who has the other version of the game).

The main thing the game has changed from previous titles are wild pokemon catching, which isn't really bad. It's easy enough and simple enough to throw pokeballs and it is more realistic having pokemon on the overworld than suddenly finding a gigantic pokemon on some tall grass.Catching wild pokemon is overall easier but at the same time it's harder when it comes to ensure a catch. If you don't want to waste your masterball your only other option is to use an ultraball with a berry, an the pokemon can escape if you fail too many times which is kind of uhh... It doesn't really make the game harder, it makes the game luck-dependant which kinda sucks. When you are playing normally the catching system will be better for you, on serious cathes like shinies and legendaries, you may choke because of your depressing bad luck. There is no sleeping/false swipe and you can't even use all of your pokeballs since the pokemon will eventually flee. Also as there are no wild battles, you will have to level up you pokemon with wild pokemon catching. Which may fill your PC too much. In conclusion the pokemon go catching system has it's pros and cons.
To summarize, the game is a step back and definately not worth 60$

-The ability to walk your Pokemon was a welcoming feature returning from Heartgold and Soulsilver.
-It was fun catching all 152 mons in the game.
-It's one of the more freeroaming Pokemon games, you can catch most of the legendary Pokemon with only 3 badges.
    Cons:
-Mew is locked behind a $50 paywall. I only got him due to Black Friday marking it down by $30, and even then the first Pokeball Plus I got didn't contain the Mew despite being new.
-The game is appealing to a casual market in a series that is already casual as is. The game is too easy and holds your hand a lot, even blocking off gyms untils you got Pokemon with a certain advantage.
-Post game is lacking. You pretty much level up your Pokemon inorder to battle the strongest trainer of that respective Pokemon.
-The catching is not explained very well. The mons would jump around left to right, and the game doesn't tell you how to throw the ball inorder to reach them. The game's tracking is also poor, making it so your ball will sometime be thrown the EXACT opposite way you intended.

The game is fun, but the problems it carries brings it down a lot. 6/10 game, knocking down a point for the Pokeball Plus thing.

Looks beautiful! But it sucks. It's a little bit too much casual-directed, that's why this game is not for me. The only thing I really like about this game is that we can see Pokémon in the overworld now. And they can be outside of their pokéball and walk alongside you, but not inside buildings, not even the little ones. That sucks.

Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee are remakes of Pokémon Red & Blue and are pretty underwhelming remakes at that. For the average player, this game is a great experience and is not too challenging as it builds itself as a game for newcomers into the series who have no experience with Pokémon or have dabbled a bit with the mobile game Pokémon Go. For the average player, this game is a great experience and is not too challenging as it builds itself as a game for newcomers into the series who have no experience with Pokémon or have dabbled a bit with the mobile game Pokémon Go. However, for the diehard or big Pokémon fans, this game feels like a slap in the face and a dumbed-down version of such a great game. It's not too offensive for the fans but is very mediocre and hardly offers any challenge. It's great for Nintendo to try and introduce newcomers to the series, but as the first Pokémon title on the Switch is does everything but make the Pokémon fans suffer. Throw away all strategy and fun that the Pokémon series is known for. The catching mechanic has been implemented directly from Pokémon Go so you don't actually battle the Pokémon when you catch them, just a simple toss from the joycon or a click of A. You catch them based on a ring, Green meaning easy to catch, yellow meaning moderate to catch, or red, hard to catch. But unlike the mobile game, if the ring is not green, don't expect to catch the Pokémon with a regular Pokeball because it's borderline uncatchable. In Pokémon Go you could still catch a red ring Pokémon with a regular Pokeball, in this game it feels like there's no chance. Speaking of the joycons, the control scheme of this game is so poorly made, there's no option to play on the TV with a Pro Controller or Joycon Grip, just a single joy-con or a Pokeball Plus. I bring up again that challenge is nowhere in this game, I'd be lying to you if I told you I lost many battles. Losing in Pokémon teaches you to use strategy in your second fight that you didn't use in your first battle, but as said before, unless you're new to the series, you won't lose a lot. You would also think that a game on the Switch would show some evolution to the series, but the animations in the game are stiff and have almost no flash. It stays true to the original games as every animation is pretty static. I've never finished the game and probably never will as i find almost no reason to. That being said the game introduces wandering Pokémon which is one of the only positives I saw from this game, as being able to see the Pokémon before you walk into it stops you from running into Pidgeys & Zubats over and over again. It appears to me as Nintendo wanted to make a game that would draw in old fans of the series by making the game Red/Blue remakes, but it comes off as a shameless cash grab as this game isn't worthy enough to be comparable to those games. If you don't know much about Pokémon and have always wanted to get into the series, this game is obviously made for you and you might enjoy it too! And for Pokémon Go players this game does appear to have some sort of functionality with the mobile game so maybe it might interest you. But for a big fan of the series, this is one game you probably won't regret skipping. Expand

A remake of the blue / red / yellow pokemon saga without further ado, very faithful to the originals. GameFreak needs to evolve in the technical and artistic section. We are in 2019 and it seems that it is not a nintendo game with these GameCube graphics. As it is a remake after all, what less than adding voices to the main characters, which they have not done. I do not recommend it.

Let's Go Pikachu by comparison is a barebones remake of Pokémon Yellow.

You know... the game where you start with a Pikachu and obtain Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur from various NPCs just because Nintendo wanted to cash in on the success of the Pokémon anime.

The main difference is... there's also an Eevee version where you start with the Pokémon that was Blue's starter in Yellow instead - because double money for Nintendo!

Which begs the question for the consumer: Do YOU want an electric type that refuses to evolve or a normal type that refuses to evolve, and that's why I think everybody went with Let's Go Pikachu, because let's face it, Eevee sucks.

So much of Pokémon Yellow's DNA is in this game that it's shocking. Even Jessie & James appear as occasional boss encounters, and just like with Yellow, have hardly as much character as they do in the anime.

Whole heaps of content synonymous with Pokémon as a series have been gutted out for the sake of simplicity, sanitisation and parity with Pokémon Go. A few examples:

    1. Random wild Pokémon battles have been removed in favour of a Pokéball throwing minigame that works passably well with the Switch's controls.

    2. Your smack-talking rival from the original game, manga & anime series, has been replaced with a friendlier, more boring, more lame and more sanitised "friendly rival." Trace is frankly an insult to fans of Blue and Gary Oak.

    3. The Celadon City Game Corner has no minigames. It's not even like in HG/SS where the slot machines were replaced with other minigames. They're completely gone.

    4. No bicycles. Cycle Road is now Pokémon Road and you can traverse it by foot. Mounts have been added to the game but they just feel so weird and janky, especially when you automatically dismount just to jump from a ledge and remount after you land.

    5. HMs are now Secret Techniques which your companion Pokémon can learn. This means that you're dependent upon your starter to use moves. Thankfully, the combat version of these moves are repurposed as MMs in their original locations and TMs are reusable...

    6. The Safari Zone has been outright removed and replaced with "Go Park", a place which allows you to bring Pokémon from Go into your game. It's a one-way trip, by the way.

These are just a few of the glaring problems that Let's Go has as a game. It isn't so much a remake as it is a low-effort rehash. The game is competently made but it's not what you'd expect from a Gen 8 Pokémon title. It feels like some failed experiment to create a game that has parity with Niantic's hit mobile game which backfired tremendously.

Let's Go Pikachu does a good job at preserving this familiar setup, and I had no trouble getting absorbed in this game the same way I get absorbed in pretty much every Pokémon game I pick up.

One of the cool things about Let's Go Pikachu is that it also presents a few welcome changes to the long-held standards of the franchise. For starters, catching has been completely overhauled, modified to appeal to newcomers who enter the franchise via Pokémon Go. I thought this was a pretty cool way to shakeup the formula and set this game apart from its predecessors. Wild Pokémon encounters have also been changed, so that you can see various Pokémon wandering around in the wilderness before you encounter them. Although its more of an aesthetic thing, this change really went a long way for me. Not only is it easier to avoid unwanted encounters (though they still do happen), it also adds a lot to the visuals of the Kanto region, and makes the world feel more real.

Speaking of visuals, the overall look of this game is also very nice. There are a lot of new cutscenes and added animations that make the game feel much more alive than previous 3D Pokémon games have been. The designs for all the important characters (including the protagonist, the gym leaders/Elite Four, all the bosses, and a bunch of supporting characters) are all really nice looking. The environments also look neat.

Pokémon walking behind you, a fan-favorite feature from HGSS, is also finally back, and actually improved somewhat. You can control which Pokémon walks behind you (instead of it just being the one in the first party slot), and you can do more than just walk with them. There are ridable Pokémon that replace the bike, flying Pokémon that let you soar through the sky (post-game only though), and various water Pokémon that'll take you through the ocean (after you get the surf secret technique). Unlike the mounts from previous 3DS games, these are all your own Pokémon, and interacting with them like this helps with the art style to make the game one of the most immersive Pokémon games.

But the game is not without its pitfalls.

Let's Go Pikachu adds plenty of new features to the game it's based on, but preserves many of its flaws as well. The plot is just as tacked-on and empty as the last time these games were remade. Once again, Team Rocket show up to do lots of generic villain stuff. Giovanni is just as forgettable as ever, having almost no presence outside of the two times you battle him. This should hardly come as a surprise to those who've played the originals (or most Pokémon games) before, but it's still disappointing.

Similar to this, I am of the opinion that the Kanto region is the most boring region in Pokémon, geographically at least. There are a couple cool areas here and there like Pokémon Mansion and Lavender Tower, but they pale in comparison to landmarks that came in later games. So even though they look nice, they're boring to play through.

Regarding the gameplay, I have two main complaints: the repetitiveness and the EXP gain.

I can't recall if it was like this in previous games, but it felt like every route was absolutely flooded with trainers. Getting through areas like the Rocket HQ, Rock Tunnel and most of the later-game routes took me literal hours of fighting trainer after trainer after trainer, over and over again. And nearly all of these trainer battles have absolutely no strategy to them, requiring only mindless button mashing. Because of the limited pool of Pokémon this game has, you also end up fighting the same handful of Pokémon dozens or even hundreds of times.

In spite of this forced grinding, gaining EXP is extremely slow. Even when consistently facing Mons that were ten levels above my current one, it could take forever to gain even a single level sometimes. I'm the type of person who likes to rotate Mons in and out of my team pretty routinely, and this was especially frustrating for me because it felt like it was encouraging me to just capture six Pokémon early on in the game and only use them.

Also, quickly as I'm running out of characters: some of the in-game models were missing light-mapping in battles (which looked weird), and Pokémon walking behind you could get glitchy. The postgame also requires lots of grind. Like so much grind I didn't even bother.

Let's Go is most fun in the beginning, when everything is new, and in the end, when your progress starts to add up. But in the middle, there's a lot of slog to get through. As a long-time Pokémon fan, I could overlook the game's numerous flaws and get a lot of enjoyment from it. But if you can't do the former, you probably won't be able to do the former.

You can't even use a pro controller. Did you spend an extra $70 for that pro controller? That's too bad, because you can't use it at all. They wanted to cash grab with the Pokeball plus sales to force you into their gimmick of spending an extra $45 for a stupid Pokeball controller that will only be useful for this game. That's 100% the audience they were targeting and they obviously stopped caring about their true fans.

I just can't help but feel like the company didn't care very much with what they were doing this time around. It's a back to basics Pokemon game that removes around 50% of what makes Pokemon fun. This is not a good game. It's neither a good Pokémon game nor a good RPG in general. The Pokémon series has always been a very casual and simple part of the JRPG genre, it's made to appeal first and foremost to kids after all. In recent times Gamefreak have adopted the strategy of simplifying the games even more and that's extremely apparent with Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee. These games ignore a plethora of features that have been a staple of the series for many years in favor of cashing in on the Pokémon Go hype by implementing features from that game. This to me seems like a very weird choice to make. Who would have thought that the very first mainline Pokémon title released on a home console would remove features in sake of implementing game mechanics from a mobile title of all things. It feels honestly very bizarre. Apart from that, the game doesn't look what I would expect a home console Pokémon game to look like. It looks like an upscaled 3DS game. This is especially pathetic when you compare it to other bestseller titles on the Switch, such as Mario Odyssey, which looks and runs magnitudes better than Let's Go. This to me really just indicates a lack of effort on Gamefreak's part. They know that whatever they do, the game will sell well. Thus they'll just put in minimal effort and people will defend them for it.
Not everything is wrond with these games though. I like the concept of Master Trainers for example. I think it could be expanded upon so that it doesn't just fall down to whoever has the faster Pokémon wins but there's definitely potential for some fun post-game content there.
To be honest, it is very difficult to think of more positive things to say about Let's Go so I'll just wrap up my review with the next few sentences. I don't know who these games are for. I don't think kids are too stupid to play any of the other mainline games and I don't think if you have nostalgia for gen 1 that you would seriously enjoy these games more than the originals or Firered/Leafgreen. Let's Go feels like the biggest stepback in the history of Pokémon. Now we'll just have to hope that Gamefreak keeps Let's Go seperate from the "real" mainline games and that they'll positively surprise us with next year's entry.

The graphics are okay, marginally better than Gen 7 (though the capture sequences are virtually indistinguishable from GO), and seeing Pokémon roam around the overworld is pretty cool and something I hope carries over to later generations. No HMs is nice but USUM already fixed that. Thus ends my list of pros.

I don't understand all the meddling with the core formula. The story is that GF wanted to make the game more accessible for new players so they removed wild battles, abilities, held items, etc. But last I checked, young kids have spent the last 20 years being able to figure out the inner complexities of Pokémon, beginning with those of us who started with Gen 1 when we were 6 and 7, all the way up to the kids whose first Pokémon game was USUM. Not to mention every iteration of Pokémon has sold like hotcakes, so it's not like having abilities or whatever was frustrating new players to the point that they weren't buying the game.

The real reason that this game has been so stripped down, that the difficulty is such a joke, is because it was obviously a rush job and a cash grab. Wanna know why IVs, which are easily the most complex thing about Pokémon, made it into the game but not abilities? Because IV's are easy to code into a game, it's just RNG pumping out a series of numbers. Same with natures, which are even more frustrating than IVs (still in the game despite being universally hated). Unlike abilities, but putting abilities in requires effort, unique animations, effects, weather (also removed), etc. Same with hold items. Nobody ever complained about hold items, we've been able to figure those out since the first time we gave Totodile a berry in GS, but those got purged too. So don't buy the BS that GF was concerned with new players being confused - what really happened is that they didn't have enough time to cram everything in before the holiday deadline.

The GO mechanics are also supremely frustrating, mostly because the catch system is designed for GO (a F2P game) and not a game that people paid $60 for. Pokémon GO is designed for kids to spam Poke balls until they have to use Mommy's Visa to buy more. Getting a Nice/Great/Excellent has zero bearing on catch rates, which is now 100% RNG that the player has very little control over - all you can do you is press the berry button and hope that the Pokémon doesn't immediately run away. The result is a catch minigame that feels incredibly frustrating - anyone who has hurled 5+ ultra balls into a green circle only to have their 30+ chain broken because the target fled knows what I mean.

It's charming being back in Kanto, and seeing a big-ol Onix rumble around is cool. But this game is not worth $60, and with less features than the 3DS games it might not be worth $40 either. I understand why this game exists, but man is it a disappointment, and if GF doesn't really crush Gen 8 then my interest in Pokémon might finally collapse. Also they left Stealth Rock in the game but removed Rapid Spin and Defog. You have been warned.

The point is, there's nothing that makes this game worth more than FireRed, a game that came out over a decade ago. If you don't already have FRLG or something to play GBA games and you just really like the look of this game more, then sure, you'll have fun. If you don't fit that description, then I'd only recommend the game if you play GO and have children to play with, since I imagine that would elevate the experience a bit. Although, while we're on children, I'd still recommend you get them FRLG instead. If you're a parent and you don't really get Pokemon, don't be fooled by people who say this game is better for kids; Pokemon has ALWAYS been a good fit for children, so the additions that make this game more childish and easy were completely unnecessary. I enjoyed FRLG as a kid, and I still come back to it. I would've enjoyed this game too, but I'm not so sure about that second part.

For veteran Pokemon fans, the game is fun as long as you don't think too hard about all the stuff that's missing or where they went wrong, and the fact that that's the most positive thing I can say about it should tell you all you need to know.

Kanto's graphics have been updated. The presentation and music quality is greater than ever before. The return of following Pokemon brings a certain magic to exploring the overworld and the game is filled is with loving homages to the franchise's early days, both for casual and more dedicated fans.

So why is my score so low?

Because for all the effort the games put into style, accessibility and a warm feeling of nostalgia, the core experience under the hood feels strikingly shallow - a problem many have had with the series as a whole lately.

The removal of wild battles in favour of a Pokemon Go style system, and the availability of only the original 151 Pokemon + 2 newcomers are the most striking changes, enough to put off many fans by themselves, but ultimately only the tip of the iceberg. The difficulty has been lowered compared to both the original Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and their remakes Fire-Red and Leaf-Green years prior. The post-game content, the pride of some of the most well renowned Pokemon experiences like Gold/Silver and their even better remakes, Emerald and Black 2/White 2 is particularly barren, with the aforementioned remakes of the same game: FR/LG doing more in this regard in 2004. The wireless features the franchise has had since 2006 have been stripped back: random wireless battles and the Global Trading System are no more. The removal of various layers of battling complexity: held items, abilities and more have also put a major dampener on the competitive side of things, an aspect of the franchise that has only been growing in recent years.

I think the shallow feeling of the games as a whole can be summarised with one analogy to another Pokemon remake many years back. The original Pokemon red and blue were ripe with speculation surrounding the mysterious 151st Pokemon Mew - all playground rumours aside, Mew was unattainable aside from very sparse, inaccessible events. Then came Pokemon Emerald in 2005: in it Gamefreak put the effort into crafting a special event in which you could finally catch Mew with some special in-game story content. Players had been curious for years and were finally rewarded. Now compare that to Mew's availability in Let's Go. With the game's efforts to reignite nostalgia and the magic of the early franchise, it would've been all to easy to implement a special Mew event: maybe as a reward for catching all 150 Pokemon, or as a homage to many of the rumors back in the day: the perfect cherry on top of a game. Instead, Mew was locked behind a paywall: an accessory that cost real world money to attain, all for the privelage of obtaining Mew with no extra bells or whistles, story content or magic to speak of.

This is a problem many, myself included, have had with the franchise to various degrees in the past five or so years. Constant alluding to days past instead of moving forward. Cutting out difficulty and depth in favour of adding extra style over substance. An ever shrinking amount of content per game owed to misconceptions about what the children of today want, completely ignoring that the franchise attracted so many newcomers throughout its history with exactly the opposite - and it is many of those fans in particular that feel left behind with Let's Go.

The games look, sound and play impressively. No doubt by themselves they are a fun, harmless Pokemon experience, and will reignite the magic in many, But in the context of Gamefreak's current approach when developing the franchise and the milestones set by previous instalments, Let's Go feels like a hollow "return to form" and foray onto the Nintendo Switch, wowing on the surface but offering little underneath. This is Pokemon far from its best.

It's okay if you like Gen 1 and want a timewaster that you can shut off your brain and play for a few hours, but if you're expecting anything deeper then look elsewhere. This was clearly made as a quick filler for this year to cash in on the Go players, with the bare minimum effort put in while presumably every one else in Game Freak is working on the 2019 game/s.

Honestly as a Go player the catching didn't bother me as much, it worked decently with the Joy-Con. Following Pokemon and being able to ride on them as well as not having to use HMs was nice and I wish they keep this feature for future games. Some of the battles in the game can be pretty challenging if you don't excessively catch Pokemon and keep around the same levels as your opponents. I don't really have a problem with the 'chibi' artstyle they went with for this game, but the graphics and animations look flat and unfinished which is frankly horrible for the series' first HD game on a home console especially when put next to other Switch games. The soundtrack is just the same 5 instruments over and over making every song sound exactly the same, they weren't memorable remixes in the slightest. The story is just the same as RBY with the odd new thing here and there, only your new 'Rival' in this game reminds me of the 'friends' from Pokemon XY and not in a good way. And features like online random matches, abilities and held items that were in every previous game were removed for absolutely no good reason, with nothing of note added as an incentive to play the game beyond beating the Champion or catching Mewtwo.

Definitely don't buy a Switch just for this game, it's not worth it. Only get this if you have literally nothing else to play on your Switch, and even then only buy it if you can find it cheap, because that's what this game is. It's definitely not worth £50/$60.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty much the same typical pokemon game you ever expect from Game Freak. Nothing screams challenging single player content. For a JRPG it's pretty low in standards. I'm just going to cut to the chase and give you what exactly what you want.

Is there single player post game content and is there any good replay value?

Yes there is post game content such as the master trainer battles, and SPOILERS! You get to fight trainer Blue, Red, and Green. As for replay value, no. Most modernize pokemon games from the 3DS era onto the Switch STILL weak in the replay value department.

There! That's pretty much what there is to it. If you want to buy the game because it's "Pokemon" then by all means go ahead, but if you pretty much play every single game in the generation. Expecting more of a hardcore single player challenge, more post game content, higher replay value for single player content. I'm terribly sorry but you're sadly mistaken if you think you'll be getting those.

Funny enough, the story is just as bland as X and Y. Despite it being a remake and all. Then again, Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green always had terrible stories. Don't expect that to change.

Overall, it's just another cheap cash grab, lack of replay value and most of all. Another babies' first JRPG. It's not worth playing and I suggest everyone to turn away from it and hold off until gen 8 comes around. Though let's be real honest. Gen 8 will be **** too so long as Junichi Masuda, Shigeru Ohmori is at the helm of directing these games. Nothing will ever change.

It's an ok game but definitely not worth $60. Motion controls could be better, exclusion of Pokemon, ExP share can't be turned off, animations are a step back, lack luster customization and lack of abilities and held items.

There are some aspects of the game that I like. For example, I believe that you are able to choose which Pokemon you want to catch instead of random encounters is nice and I preferably quite like it. I also think that because of the new combo feature and the Shiny Charm, it makes catching shiny Pokemon more enjoyable and easier rather than spending hours on end trying to find that one shiny Pokemon you were looking for. There are many features that are unpleasant and disappointing about this game as well. I found this game to be quite fun when I was playing it. I liked battling all the gyms and battling the Elite Four again, but after that I quickly lost interest in the game. I myself am not a shiny hunter so that takes the aspect of "chaining" as I call it and filling up the PokeDex out of the question. The "Master Trainers" don't provide a interesting thing to do after the game, and Team Rocket does a lousy job of trying to battle your trainer again after the game. Overall, I am disappointed in the post game adventure unlike Sun, Omega Ruby, and X. I also am not a fan of the catching mechanism that Game-freak used in this game. I find myself using too many Pokeballs and infuriating myself on how Pokemon somehow instantaneously flee from battles breaking my chains. I am used to spending 1-3 Pokeballs in the other core games rather than 7-9 Pokeballs in this game. I also dislike how there are only 151 core Pokemon in this game (excluding the legendary, special Pokemon, and the Alolan Pokemon). This makes for the game to be somewhat boring and tiring going through. I honestly think there is a lack of story line here both in game and post game. The way that Game-freak merged the game with Pokemon Go was disappointing and unpleasant for the core gamers. Overall, I think you should give this game a try. It's not only my opinion that shapes your mind to whether you want to buy the game or not. I think it should not be called a core series game and more of a sub-series game. Disappointing overall. To start with the positives I had about this game, the visuals are admittedly nice, especially compared to the game we got a year later. It also adds to the “cuteness factor” this game has with Pikachu & Eevee. Am I sick of seeing them plastered on every piece of marketing involving Pokémon? Yes. They’re still adorable in game though. I also like how they brought back Pokémon following you & how shiny Pokémon actually appear shiny in the over world, why they didn’t bring that shiny feature back in SwSh (aside from the DLC you’d have to pay $30 for just to have Pokémon follow you, wild Pokémon still won’t appear shiny tho lol stupid af) is yet another bafflingly stupid design choice that they can add to their shamefully long list of stupid design choices. That’s where the positives end & I have to get angry with TPC yet again. Why.. WHY are you remaking Kanto AGAIN?! Who is asking for this trash?! Kanto is the most boring & generic region out of all the Pokémon games I literally cannot name a si how memorable location that wasn’t done better in another Gen. Even most of the Pokémon in this Gen are either ugly or dumb, aside from a handful of good ones. How this boring ass generation continually gets preferential treatment over half a dozen other BETTER gens is beyond me. Nostalgia sells & GameFreak is gonna milk it until I’m dead clearly. They’ve been out of ideas for a while now but this game really put the nail in their creative coffin imo. These games just shouldn’t exist. The extra time and resources that went to these games should have gone towards Sword & Shield, maybe they wouldn’t have turned out the way they did if things went that way. At this point I’m so sick and tired of seeing the same 151 Pokémon and same tired ass region that I will never touch this game again, or any like it. Some positives would be the music, graphics, and the fact that Pokemon actually follow the player.

Now if that's what it actually was then maybe it would be fine, I would understand if they were limited by hardware or something but they're not. Nintendo has already shown what the switch is really capable of and astounded us with things like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. In comparison this is utterly pathetic. Especially as one of their mainstay franchises.
It just feels so barebones. So many basic features have been stripped away. Of all the features removed the absence of wild battles is the most noticeable. Sure they could be annoying but that annoyance mostly came from the fact that these encounters were randomised. They found the perfect remedy for that by having pokemon appear in the overworld, the player can now decide what pokemon to encounter when they choose. But why then remove the battle element? Having to use this silly catching mechanic for the entirety of the game is just not fun and the joycon controls for it are awful. At least those battles gave some kind of variety to gameplay. And it should be noted that by removing wild battles you're not just stripping away one the most fundamental elements of every mainline pokemon games gameplay but from the story too. The whole reason you're given your starter pokemon in the first place is to protect you from all the other pokemon in the world. In the original red and blue Professor Oak yanks you out the grass and tells you it's not safe out there. Here in let's go the pokemon in the overworld don't even bother chasing you, they just stand around waiting to be caught. The only challenging aspect of wild encounters now is making sure you've brought along enough pokeballs. Theres very little challenge in the game overall. The incredibly broken candy system and the exp share which is stuck on at all times make the trainers who are already pushovers no obstacle at all. Most pokemon games are fairly easy but at least there was online play to supplement that but here online features are incredibly limited, there's no GTS, Wonder Trade, or Battle Spot and you can only battle or trade with friends locally. With no challenge in the main game, very little post game content and limited online features its just a dull experience overall. The bland visuals don't help either. The environments feel sterile. I was initially somewhat excited to see a revisit to kanto, but only because I was interested to see how it would be reimagined with the capabilities of the switch. There is no re-imagining though, instead we just get the same maps and layouts, outdated grid system included, lazily rendered in 3D. They're reusing the models and animations for pokemon that they made 5 years ago for x and y and i've noticed some reuse of animations from sun and moon for npcs too. And fair enough, we're approaching nearly 1000 pokemon now, it's not worth the time to redo those every game, but surely then that should also afford you time to actually put care into rest of the games visuals. And the soundtrack that I've seen a lot of praise for, in the end just turned out to be generic midi orchestrated versions of the originals that lack any real personality of their own.
And all of this is excused because its meant for children and to bring new people into the franchise. So did children not buy any of the previous games? Were those games not designed with them in mind? Did the kids back in the day who's nostalgia Gamefreak are now banking on drop out of the franchise back then? No. A lot of the 'accessibility issues' this game tries to solve were never really problems in the first place. A full understanding of the complexities of breeding, training and battling required for competitive play online were never necessary to make it through the main story. And you never had to touch online if you didn't want to. This already simple game series didn't need diluting further to make it more accessible. And with Pokemon currently being the highest earning media franchise, i don't evenk think accessibility is even an issue for them anymore anyway.
Really not optimistic about the 2019 games if this is all gamefreak has to show for the switch.

As a long time fan of the Pokemon Franchise I've come to air my grievances with Pokemon Let's GO. I remember when the games were first announced, it felt like a breath of fresh air and like Gamefreak were taking a brand new exciting perspective on the Pokemon formula. I was really excited to buy and play this game, unfortunately to my dismay as time went on things took a drastic change. There are many areas where the game suffers and does a spectacular job of alienating long term fans.

Lets start out with the game itself, which is inherently bad. It's an obvious cash grab aimed at the casual and GO audience. Expecting people to pay $300, then $60, and then maybe another $50 is downright greedy and ludicrous. Also spending that extra $50 on a one dimensional accessory that only works for Lets GO and Pokemon GO is bananas. Not only that, but the pokeball plus already has limited used in Let's GO itself with many people opting to use the joycons instead anyway, and it's the only way to obtain Mew in game!

This game cost $20 dollars more than usual despite having half the usual content. Next is the gameplay itself. Gameplay aspects such as natures and held items have been stripped out with some moves being cut out from the game as well! This waters the game down removing a layer of variability and cuts out a part of the pokemon formula which makes it all the more interesting. Then there is the severely limited online aspect with the GTS, wonder trade, and battle spot not being included with the online services.

I'm just going to start listing things now, maybe go in depth for some that need further explaining. Only the first 150 pokemon included, plus meltan. Every other game includes pokemon from other gens, even the fire red/leaf green remakes so there is no reason LG shouldn't include them either. Graphics are not great by any means, even compared to their handheld predecessor US/UM, with some of the models being ripped directly from Pokemon GO. Overall the effort put into graphics and animations is laughable. Removed wild battles, and the hand-holding or ultra casualization is blatantly obnoxious and even enough to turn literal kids away.

Post game content is nearly non existent and seems almost haphazard, and the game overall leaves one feeling there is much to be desired and that so much more could of been done to make this a good game. Instead we got a half effort, diluted, money grab. Which if they sell well, only serves to further incentivize Gamefreak to continue putting out full priced games that only require half the work. It already happened with pokemon go. Gamefreak and nintendo saw PGO success and now we have the train wreck that is lets go as a result. If the trend continues the lack luster mediocrity that inspired this game could eventually bleed into the main series games.

    1. The game is way too easy. It's impossible to lose a battle. You gain so much experience, that you will always be over-leveled relative to your opponent but also have a team of 6. In the original, going through Mt. Moon was a grind and you either had to fade out or go back to the Pokémon Center. In this game, you just blaze through it with your overpowered and over-leveled starter.

In this game, you just blaze through it with your overpowered and over-leveled starter.

    2. Exp. Share should not be mandatory, and it is broken. The experience each Pokémon gains does not change according to relative level differences. This means that the forsaken Magikarp you buy before Mt. Moon will be hopelessly under-leveled, as it belongs to the slow experience group. Moreover, any Pokémon you catch will usually be under-leveled relative to your starter. The only way to train these Pokémon on their own is to remove all other Pokémon from the party and go around catching useless Pokémon in combos.

    3. There are no wild battles. I honestly cannot understand why they thought this was a good idea. I'd welcome novel ways to capture Pokémon. I mean, you could try befriend them and they would willingly want to join you - a bit like what happens with the starter. The new catching mechanics on their own are stale and boring. Moreover, the fact you don't have to battle wild Pokémon means there is no risk-reward to catching Pokémon in places like the Victory Road, Mt. Moon or the Rock Tunnel.

    4. Very poor frame rate performance in many locations (e.g. Viridian Forest) and poor overworld animations.

    5. Lack of content. If the game is focusing more on catching wild Pokémon, it makes no sense to remove all the next generations.

Very disappointing. I think this game is going to simply gather dust.

Now if you're fine with Gamefreak/Nintendo saying "All the fans need to see is that it has Pokemon in the title" then by all means I guess this game is for you. If you're fine with them putting in less and less effort in every subsequent iteration of your favorite franchise then by all means throw your hard earned cash at them and see this the video games sink into mobile/casual territory. The Director himself said in an interview that "People/Kids are used to mobile games and watching games on youtube", so by his defintion, you the consumer have the attention span of an ant to even be able to enjoy fully fleshed out video games and would probably just enjoy watching beautiful scenery than actually playing the games. But enough about that.

See the problem with the games is, its a switch game, not only that but its pokemons debut game for the console itself. Its priced at 60$ which is 20$ more than the previous games and it has less content. This is a fact. Stripping the other pokemons itself is already a huge chunk of the content out of the games. FR/LG had sevii islands in the post-game, HG/SS had the battle frontier, OR/AS had soaring, mirage islands, battle-resort, Delta episode then LGPE has well.. 1 on 1 with a bunch of trainers just re-scattered around kanto. I get it they want to lure in the Go community and the people that left the games a long time ago but at the cost of alienating your LOYAL fanbase. That a bit of a kick in the nuts. Why couldn't they find a middle ground to make the games appealing to both and then again by the way they designed this game it shouldn't even be appealing to the casual-fanbase, in truth its insulting, basically them saying that the games in its current state, a childrens game btw is too much for other people to handle so they had to dumb it down even for grown adults to enjoy? ridiculous. but hey people will probably just eat this up because its pokemon and its pretty.

If you're a long time fan of the series and no matter how much this game looks appealing to you, just think about what this game means for the future of the series. Speak out, vote with your wallet. Maybe you won't feel the effects yet by the already announced gen 8 title, but at somepoint gamefreak is going to realize even without putting any effort into these games that they will sell, I assure you the video games will become shells of its former self. Im sure alot already feels this way with the 3DS games.

In addition, the Go catching mechanics are tedious rather than being challenging or engaging. All of this makes the game have next to no replay value I can understand making a one-off game for newcomers, but REALLY hope these negative changes don't carry over to future main-series games. Yes, they know what Nintendo said about the game not being exactly like the others and, yes, they know about the mechanics that Nintendo said would not be in the game. With that said, that does not invalidate their entire review because, like everyone else, they had their own experience with the game and just want to share their thoughts. So, don't be so quick to down-vote. This is what reviews are for, to show an overall reception of a piece of media. So take in all of these reviews and form your own opinion about the game.

    ANYWAY,
I beat Pokemon Emerald in 3 days when I was 5 years old. That being said, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu (and Eevee. They're the same game. Don't be a sucker and buy both) are dumbed down to the bear minimum.
    - Always on exp share (not a big issue though)
    - Pokemon GO wild battles
    - constant hand holding
    - friendly rival (because children are sensitive and words hurt I guess)
    - No abilities
    - No held items
    - Only first 151 Pokemon (plus Meltan and Melmetal)
    - No working game corner (because I guess that counts as gambling and we must shield the children)
It's almost as if Game Freak assumes that kids these days are getting dumber every year. The games were already easy and, now, they're just lifeless.

I don't have a problem with going back to Kanto because I really like Kanto. The issue lies in that there are no new places to go. In fact, places like the Sevii Islands have been taken out. Personally, I would have really like to visit Johto afterwards but I guess that was too much to ask for.

I also don't have a problem with wild pokemon appearing outside of battle rather than being randomly selected when running through tall grass. The issue with this, though, is that there are so many of them and, a lot of times, you will have your path blocked by randomly wandering wild pokemon whom you can't touch because then you'll be forced to play carnival ring toss with them.

The story is fairly the same as pokemon yellow with little to no change. You start out as a trainer in pallet town and end after beating the pokemon league. Simple. There is also no post game unless you think that "Master Trainers" actually qualifies for being post-game content. I don't see why Nintendo made a big fuss over master trainers. They're just 1v1 battles of the same pokemon and you get a title of that specific pokemon when you beat them but, those titles don't make sense in any context if you use more than one species of pokemon.

You can also try to complete the pokedex but that only works if you get mew who is locked behind a paywall. That's right! You have to buy the pokeball plus to acquire mew which is another $50 ($40 dollars if you buy the bundle pack) because, I guess, EA must've taken Nintendo aside and told them that consumers love getting screwed over at every turn.

Also, half the animations were quite literally ripped from SM/USUM so expect a lot of things to look familiar. ALSO, the graphics look sub-par. The switch is definitely capable of more than just SM/USUM graphics without the black outlines. So, that was unimpressive.

Character customization is pretty shallow despite being much better in previous titles on an inferior console. Once you pick your character appearance, you are not able to change anything about it from then on (hair style, color, eye color, etc.) You can still customize your outfit but, that has been dumbed down to just a few sets (some of which are version exclusive) and any attempt to mix and match between the sets never looks right.

The thing that I think this game does right is the music. The music is always top notch, largely because everything else is still conveyed through text. Taking the soundtrack up to orchestral level is always nice though.

Overall, this game is just... okay. It plays fine. It looks fine. However, once you beat it, there is no reason to ever come back. The online sucks and, now you need to buy a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription to even do something simple like that.

(TL;DR) Not worth $60. Designed to appeal to the very small brain stunted children. This game is Baddy Bad.

Despite the greatly overhauled graphics, it somehow manages to feel less enjoyable running around Kanto than the last time I was able to back in Leaf Green.

However, there is a role for this game as an entry point for new players. It looks a lot prettier than the older games and they decided to tone down the difficulty to a ridiculously easy level. I would definitely recommend this game for new players to acquaint themselves with the Kanto region and the original 151 pokemon. For players who have even touched another game in the series, this game will get boring very fast.

Overall, this is a fairly uninspired Kanto reboot, and I hope that Pokemon doesn't continue moving in this direction.

And the change in difficulty is a real thing too, I played Pokemon Yellow to make sure my nostalgia wasn't blinding me and it was undoubtedly harder. I caught a bulbasaur in veridian forest and raised it to level 6 so it learned vine whip and then immediately destroyed Brock without a sweat. The only bit of challenge came with onyx that actually damaged me, but thanks to my so-called "rival character" giving me 5 potions when I arrived in Pewter City. At Cerulean city I then wiped out Misty with even less effort thanks to Pikachu.
Any novelty in trying out the neat gameplay and having pokemon walking around in the grass wears off within an hour and you realize your left with (so-far at least) the worst Pokemon game ever made. If you still want to buy this, i recommend waiting till its on sale for at most $15

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's Go is a No Go.

Right off the bat this game baits you with nostalgia only to bash you over the head with its poor capture mechanic and awkward single joycon controls. Adding to the frustration, pokemon can run away at literally any time up to and even including when the pokeball hits. Even the Encounter pokemon can run from you too now.

Speaking of Encounter pokemon, you now have to battle them first before you can try to capture them. Plus you only have 5 minutes to beat them in. This restriction is quite unfair as now you need to over power your pokemon to finish the battle in time to get to the capture phase.

The motion controls for the capture mechanic are also inaccurate at times causing your ball to fly off to the left when you want to throw to the right. Most of the time when I wanted to throw directly in front of me, I had to move the joycon up as if I was throwing underhanded. I should mention also that while doing this, my joycon was in the joycon grip accessory alone as not using the Left joycon too felt awkward.

Next is the issue of the box your pokemon are stored in. in every mainline pokemon game, as well as Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness, your pokemon were sent into multiple boxes that could hold up to 20 in the old Gen 1 and 2 games, to 30 pokemon each in Generation 3 and up. Now you have a single box that hold up to 1000 pokemon! Game Freak expects you to be capturing tons of pokemon, but doing so makes it harder to pick out a pokemon to use, similar to picking out a marble from an ever increasing bag of marbles. Without being able to use multiple boxes, sorting pokemon becomes as easy as cleaning a kid's bedroom.

When it comes to training pokemon you're going to have to rely on that capture mechanic most of the time as the only battles you'll be facing are from either 6 specific encounter pokemon, or Trainers. This winds up giving you little personal experience in battling with little room for experimenting outside of battling the elite 4 or Green.

While hyper Training was brought back for this game, it's now rendered moot as there is now a candy system in place to also make a sugar junkie out of your pokemon as you boost their stats with more than just Rare Candies. Beware though, if you take your buffed out pokemon online, you stand running the risk of your pokemon facing a sugar crash and having their stats reverted for the online battle unless you choose the right rule set.

Also online battles and trades are pay walled by the Nintendo switch online service now.

The amount of unique pokemon you can get is also SEVERLY limited to just the first 151 pokemon, plus what might as well be considered Generation 8's first 2 pokemon, Meltan and Melmetal, as they are not usable anywhere else other than the multi-generational pokemon Go. Speaking of Pokemon Go, at the time of this writing, Pokemon Go has pokemon captureable from Generations 1 through 4, but only Bulbasaur through Mewtwo, as well as Meltan and Melmetal can be transferred into Let's Go. This means that in order to get Mew in Let's Go, you need to get the pokeball Plus while the Mew promotion is still going on.

Speaking of that device now, the Mew on it can only be redeemed once. so choose wisely what you do with it. As for how good the device is, I can not say as I do not have it.

While the Game corner does make a comeback, none of the games are playable in it despite the place being converted from a Casino into an Arcade. Instead, you can come here to pick up respawnable items. Fun. /s

The NPC's of Fushia even lie about the Safari zone now as it has been replaced with Go Park.

In past games you could get a bike you could ride to speed up, or ride Tauros in Gen 7. In Let's Go, you get to pick the pokemon you ride, from a selection. However if you get too close to a wall, your pokemon goes back into their ball leaving you on the ground.

Now all that said, I did find somethings likeable about this game. Certain interactions with your partner pokemon were enjoyable, the new Additional story elements were a plus (the additions, not the replacements), and even the part where you get to play as your partner pokemon in the rocket hideout were enjoyable, but they were not enough to save this game.

Nostalgia can only take a product so far, and that distance is even shorter when you have access to the original game, the first remake, and the port to the 3DS. Pokemon Let's go is a No Go, but because of the stuff I did enjoy, I'm giving it a 2 instead of a 1.

This game would have been bad and outdated a decade ago. Now, it's just awful. The art style is uninspiring and bland. The music is repetitive and aged. And the gameplay feels 20 years out of date. The core of the game is an incredibly dull and repetitive lull. The story is generic and bland, so all that leaves you with is the two main gameplay mechanics.

You aim pokeballs. You battle pokemon. That's literally the entire game. After 5 minutes you've already experienced 90% of what the game has to offer. Every fight feels the same, every catch feels the same. The game is just incredibly boring.

The game feels like a bad handheld from over 10 years ago ported to a modern device. The map is unimaginative and linear, the freedom of movement is virtually nonexistent. And the game is scattered with mind-bogglingly bad QoL decisions. The tree chopping ability is a tedious slog to get through, for example, when there is literally no reason for it not to be done automatically and quickly. Accessing what you want requires far too many clicks: three buttons to look at a map, which is completely useless anyway, which in any other game you could pop up whenever you want. And as a whole the game is incredibly slow: there is a painfully tedious amount of downtime in combat.

If the other Pokemon games are anything even remotely close to this, I have no idea how the franchise has lasted so long. I really struggle to think of any redeeming features. And this crap cost me £50.

You dont fight wild poke'mon, you only catch them, with no weakening, using the same system from poke'mon go, just with less skill needed.

Catching tons of duplicate useless poke'mon gives exp to your team, the only thing really resembling training is you let oak grind your extra unwanted poke'mon into candy, and you use that to buff your team.

It's a shallow form on what poke'mon red/blue/yellow was, and its just kinda meh.

I hope my kids like it, because its boring the hell out of me, and i have been playing poke'mon since i was 8 when blue and red came out.

On top of the gameplay issues, there are also technical issues, from the moment the game starts right away you notice the game drops frames, like really bad, movement is not very smooth and the lag gets annoying quickly.

The game overall just feels sloppy and lazy, i hope this trend does not roll over to the new poke'mon games recently announced, because if it does, they will likely kill the series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really tried to give this game the chance, but it just keep disapointing me.
Hear me out, this isnt a hate review like most, I really played it.

I was on board with all the pokemon following you and the fact that they were visible in the overworld, but after playing it and complete it... It doesnt felt like a pokemon game, sure I may not have all the pokedex (because im unwilling to pay 60bucks for another joycon) but Its feels CHEAP.

Controls: First negative point, what is this?. The controls are worse than the TWEWY remix for switch and thats saying a lot, Was it to much to allow us to disable the movement controls if I play on a train?.

Content: Its the shorter pokemon game I have played in my life. I dont know the motivation behind removing 7/8 parts of the pokedex from the game but to lock me from getting all without a joycon DLC is crossing the line. Also The postgame content is lackluster, the masters of each pokemon felt really descompensated (some hard some easy as hell) and after beating them you get a quick dialogue and a title( they keep being the masters but they share their title), maybe expecting a TM at least was too much.

Story: I already was expecting it to be bland or non-existant but for some reason they got out of their way to make unnecesary decisions (like the league champion, that doesnt make any sense).

Graphics: Well I never demanded good graphics but playing it like it is feels like playing a mobile game, I might not be wrong saying that is on the same level of Dragalia Lost a mobile game distributed by Nintendo (with chibi aesthetics), and I remember you this a 60 bucks game for Switch(an hybrid console) vs a F2P gacha mobile game.

Attention to details: Feels like a miss, with only 1/8 of the pokedex you expect that game freak may have worked in new animations for games for those 171 pokemons, but you couldnt be more wrong, they reused the assets and animation of 3ds and ported them to HD, even character animations are reused. At least ( and this are the 2 points) they deepened in the following pokemon mechanic giving them special skills like different levels of flight.

I was prepared for everything while going into this game but not this, this isnt just a short game its a scam. The game itself is worth 20 bucks max. but its sold at x3 that price +DLCs because its pokemon. After BOTW and MarioOdyssey grand start for their franchises in switch pokemon enters the hybrid console gen with a little game that couldnt live up to the expectation.

I may have lost 60 bucks but if with this review I can prevent others from the same fat so be it.

I've been skeptical ever since this was announced and frankly my opinion hasn't changed from any of the things they have shown us.

Before I start on this I must say this game is fine for someone new to the series. THAT is one thing I think everyone can agree on. It's a very basic game and is pretty much meant to be that bridge for people that haven't jumped onto mainline Pokemon yet.

If this game were judged on its own, it may even be worthy of a better score, however that isn't the situation this game calls for.

Let's Go Pikachu is a watered down game that's priced $20 more than Ultra Sun despite the latter having more content and overall being a better designed experience. LGP arbitrarily removes mechanics that have been a series staple, while throwing darts on the wall to choose which mechanics to keep (such as megas). There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to what gets removed and what stays. I imagine the development team for this game didn't have much direction. At its core LGP is a 20 year old game with a new coat of paint, nothing on a deeper level has really been changed in any meaningful way. It's received the most common QOL updates that the series has progressed on but nothing has really been done to make it feel like a modern Pokemon experience. About the only remarkable new thing in LGP is the interactivity with your Pokemon and more importantly your starter of choice. This game is clearly filler to stall time for gen 8, but it also strikes a chord with those people that have a weakness for nostalgia.
If you are very desperate for a new game regardless of quality, you might as well get this. If you are new to the series, this honestly isn't a bad choice. But if you're a veteran like me then this game really offers nothing for the $60 price tag, and I would advise against purchasing it. I for one will be giving this game to my brother and he will probably enjoy it.

It's incredible how Game Freak can dumb down such an incredible franchise to milk as many pennies from the casual audience. Sadly, the new graphics and music can't make up for the removed gameplay elements such as wild Pokémon battles (I guess they were too difficult for the casual market?).
Overall, this is a soulless game pandering to the most casual fans who have only played Pokémon GO.

Lets move on to the battles. Gamefreak managed to make the game even easier then sun and moon. You don't have to battle wild pokemon anymore. It takes another bite out of the strategy these games used to have. Now you don't have to worry about your pokemon's moves PP. The fun part about pokemon games was the catching mechanic. Taking down the HP of each pokemon, inflicting status effects all to make the catching proces more easy. Its completely gone in this game. Now you just keep throwing stuff at pokemons. Its like they thought "hey, lets change pokemon red in a huge safari zone".

I'm so frustrated with this game. This was supposed to be the first big step for pokemon to a new console generation and they blew it. Luckily we still got smash this year, because Nintendo really dropped the ball this year.

This is the laziest, most disgusting cashgrab in Pokemon history. Kanto is basically copy pasted from a game TWENTY YEARS OLD, the only improvement is the new graphics, but that's the least you can expect out of a remake.
The idea of making a new side-series to help new players get into Pokemon was great, but the execution is HORRIBLE. This is a mobile-tier game on a home console system sold for 60$, plus an accessory for another 40$ that locks you out of obtaining Mew (it's obvious why), and the game doesn't even support a pro controller? THIS is the grand entrance of Pokemon on a home console, when Mario got Odyssey and Zelda got Breath of the Wild? The framerate is of course abyssmal, but that's something we've been fed constantly since X/Y, so nothing new here. The only thing that stops this game from being a 3DS game is the resolution, and that is telling enough. If any other franchise tried to push such a **** lazy, soulless husk of a game for 60$, it would be pummeled into the ground by negative reviews, but since it's Pokemon, nostalgia blinded normies are trying to protect the game by giving 10s without even providing any legitimate praise other than "it's cute and pretty" or complainig about negative reviews. There's no point in paying at least 60$ to play through generation I AGAIN when you have Fire Red/Leaf Green or Virtual Console re-releases of Red, Blue and Yellow. I've bought almost every mainline game in the past, got tricked into buying Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (Ultra changes my ass), but this time I'm done, Game Freak will have to up their game next time if they want to have me on board.

Listen, I understand they're trying something different for once in the franchise, sure. But "different" doesn't always equate to good, and this is a perfect example. I know what GameFreak is up to, though. Don't expect GO players to buy a Switch for one game; this ain't necessarily smart from a business standpoint.

A simple, nostalgic return to the Kanto region, offers little if you are a series veteran eager for complexity and challenge. But if that's not your main interest, Pokemon Let's Go has it all! It's a simple, cute and fun game that will keep you hooked for hours. An excellent starting point for newcomers, and a great nostalgia trip for those in a search for one.
