The controls for this game are extremely clunky and terrible, both with the joy-cons and the pro controller. Everything feels a bit sluggish and delayed. Half the time when you try to climb ledges (which is a lot, it's an action platformer after all) you either fall, or go into this weird hanging jump animation loop because you didn't transition from the forward to up buttons properly,The controls for this game are extremely clunky and terrible, both with the joy-cons and the pro controller. Everything feels a bit sluggish and delayed. Half the time when you try to climb ledges (which is a lot, it's an action platformer after all) you either fall, or go into this weird hanging jump animation loop because you didn't transition from the forward to up buttons properly, or you didn't hit the forward button at the perfect time right when you hit the ledge, or hold the forward or up button for the proper amount of time.. And if you try using the analog stick for movement, if your holding the forward button, then rotate it down, you won't duck like you'd expect. You actually have to let got of the forward position and then press the analog stick again downward to duck...

Maybe I've been spoiled by similar games in this genre that have come out since.. Games like The Messenger, Cyber Shadow, Infernax, etc., all have buttery smooth controls that just make you want to keep playing, even when the game gets tough... Even JoyMasher's previous game, Oniken, had better controls. The controls for this game made it practically unplayable for me, unfortunately.. I don't know if this is the case on other platforms, but it was for me on the Switch.

Odallus may look like an NES game, but it plays and handles progression like contemporary titles, respecting the player’s time and offering numerous secrets in an exploration-based 2D world. I went into Odallus: The Dark Call looking for Castlevania and left with an engaging experience that pays tribute to both classic 8-bit titles and modern Metroidvania games.

For now, I’ll recommend Odallus to those itching for the atmosphere of early Castlevania games and those relishing a good dose of difficulty. More casual fans may want to look elsewhere.
