This is graphically one of the most beautiful games that has ever been made. The combat system is a fresh take on classic turn-based combat. There are secrets to uncover, and different ways to power up. The boss battles are difficult but very fun. The characters have fun individual stories that have a lot of heart. The writing/language style is as beautiful as the graphics. The soundtrack is as good as any other JRPG out there.

It's an easy 10/10, and people are missing the mark by a long shot when complaining about the stories.

I think the main takeaway here is the discoveries (about themselves) that the characters make. Yes the gameplay might be a bit "repetitive" when looked on the outside, but if you look at it in the context of the character's journey and inner battles, I think that it makes sense. I feel like the game makes a good point of showing you that those are the 3-4 phases you will go through if you have doubts or have lost yourself, or if you just want to become a better version of yourself.
The music is definitely a highlight. I often put some of it on Spotify when I want to transfer myself to another place (Frostlands themes are my favorites). I tried an experiment where I would turn on the characters' songs and try to guess the character and got all of them right! I think this shows (to me at least) how well written and how fitting the music was for the characters themselves.
The game can get a bit grindy, especially if you are trying to beat the final boss. But that's the thing with most RPGs. You can say it's forced, but I don't think so. As I've already mentioned, I think the main theme of the game is personal character growth. This is well conveyed with the story. Even though that was linked to stronger and stronger battles with demons of past and present, I still think that it makes sense that you have to grind - none of the character's motives weren't to become world beaters. They just tried to do what's right for their beliefs.
I don't know the replay value of the game, haven't tried it yet. But I'm sure that at some point I will be replaying this.
Another thing I really liked were how the towns themselves radiated with a specific culture. My favorite (as with the music) was the frostlands. I really liked the idea of a frozen land where most people would be staying at the inn or at their homes near the hearths. The other places are very well done too, and do show some of the problems of medieval days (as well as now sadly).
All in all I think this is a great all rounder. I love this game and it inspired many emotions in me. I'm thankful for that and it got me thinking about whether I need to go on a similar (spiritual, at least) journey to find my real purpose in life.

Very nice graphics, great experience. The reason I come to this game is because it has a really good soundtracks (one of the reasons I play JRPGs). The downside is that the plot of each character has no relationship and interaction between the characters, but for me, the story is temporary. I still give 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly a gem that hearkens back to 90s nostalgia in JRPGs with modern quality of life updates. The sprite art is fantastic, the backgrounds are stunningly beautiful for a game of this type, and most of all, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and emotional. All the characters story lines are very well written, and you begin to feel a connection to them early on as they struggle with their pasts and present, and wanting to better themselves. There is a bit of lack of crossover in the main story lines, but that doesn't affect it too much in my own opinion, since you have free reign on choosing where to go and who to recruit and use in your party.

The gameplay mechanics play much like other turn based JRPGs of the time with a fresh addition to the battle system, which while combined with other parts you discover later in the game, lead to interesting and fun strategies. My only gripe is there is a need for a bit of grind in some areas, but that's to be expected of a JRPG.

    Spoilers ahead;

Once you finish the main game you're able to take on Galdera, a secret boss, after completing a seemingly innocuous side quest involving a seemingly unimportant character. It ties together all the story lines in a very satisfying way, making you think about how many generation it took to set in motion all the events that affected the 8 characters lives.

It's incredibly fun, addictive and there are hours and hours of content to explore, depending on how much of the game you decide to check. It's an almost perfect JRPG.

My only complain would be that the story feels a bit weak, since there is never a "sense of urgency" or a global issue to be addressed. You are just checking what 8 people decide to do with their lives. There is no mission, apart from the dozens of sidequests and individual chapters for you to investigate.

But I don't even want to say this is a "bad" thing about the game. It's just a different approach. This is an almost perfect game and that would alone justify the purchase of a Switch.

The dynamic ways the background is used gives it a almost pop-up book feel, (probably why the Wayfarer Edition had one), and overall it gives Octopath Traveler a look not any other game has achieved.

Story wise each character partakes in their own and while some character's story didn't draw me in at first, others were very entertaining.

Combat is enjoyable and the complexity picks up when you add more characters to your party.

The music is quite enjoyable as well. There are the combat tracks that stick with you after you set the game down alone with the characters quotable lines but you also have tracks that help deliver a specific emotion the game wants you to know. Overall the music is very fitting for the game and the bonus is it's quite good!

I received the Wayfarer Edition and for what I was expecting I was very happy with the product. It came with 8 pages of a pop-up book that has great detail even for a pop-up book. I do wish that it was easier to have a page from the book stand up so I can display it. The coin is very detailed and quite real. (Did the classic bite test.) The cloth map is nicely detailed with art of the map and official art on the back. It also came with a 14 track CD of some of the game's music. I have yet to listen to it, but it seems most of the common music is recorded on it.

I have tested most of the English and Japanese voice cast and there are some characters that will make you chuckle from their acting, but overall I really enjoyed the cast in Japanese and English. If you don't like one or the other, you can freely choose to change the language option.

Overall Octopath Traveler is an excellent game for those who enjoy playing RPGs. I'm giving this game a 9 because I believe it does many things well and earns this score by nailing down what makes this game fun, but I do wish there was a bit more interaction between the characters and some of the characters felt a bit generic in terms of story telling that for me drop it from being a score of 10.

I really enjoy this game and I hope you do as well. Onwards Travelers.

Octopath traveller is unusual in that it sheds the typical large overarching narrative in order to tell 8 isolated and simpler but still endearing stories. While your 8 party members work together in combat their stories are their own with a few overlapping plot points that come together at the end. The lack of inter-character interaction is lessened by skit scenes but it still seems strange to be playing a party that doesn't interact like a party, that being said the quality on show here more than offsets this one issue.

The soundtrack is absolutely incredible and one of the best I've heard in a decade. Combat takes what the studio developed with bravely default, slightly reduces the amount of different jobs, but gives us a ton of additional strategy with the break system. The 2D-HD graphics are both nostalgic and technically impressive at the same time. Voice acting is surprisingly on point, although H'annit's mannerisms leave something to be desired. All in all, if you're a turn-based JRPG fan, this is a must buy, and I hope Square-Enix takes note of it's success.

Been playing the demo since January and the full game since release.

Square managed to recreate the ambiance and overall feelings that so many of us have been willing to experiment again and for this I thank them :)

Glad I did as my thoughts changed a lot since I first played. I wasn’t necessarily disappointed by it at first, but I thought it wasn’t exactly as deep as I wanted it to be. It also felt more meandering at the beginning as well and combat was a little longer than I wanted it to be, and I felt a lack of coverage.

All these things kinda changed upon completing the game. I think overall it took me about 90-95 hours to complete the whole thing. The characters are great. The combat improved substantially upon unlocking secondary jobs, which allowed more coverage and made fights feel more even. And obviously this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. Graphically it is phenomenal and I feel it will age very well in that regard.

If I had one gripe, it would be the connectivity of the stories. Yeah, taking on the optional final boss does give a little insight into how they’re connected but it is still kind of a stretch, and still is only optional. Each of the stories are good, but it’s really hard to believe that a whole party is working together in them. You fight with them but no character ever really bleeds over into another’s story. I found this to be mildly disappointing but overall didn’t change my views of the game majorly, it just is what kept it from a 10 in my book.

Other than that I can say it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, in most other aspects. The character customization is deep, the combat is more like a complex puzzle, the stories are interesting and have depth, but wrap up just before overstaying their welcome. And the world is quite big despite being linear. I feel the game is worth it’s price tag for sure. Just wish we’d have more character interaction.

If you’re feeling like it’s a bit of a drag at the beginning, just stick with it. The first 10 hours are the hardest to get through, but after that it is such a joy to play. Loved how long it actually is. Felt I got my money’s worth

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is fantastic, in almost every regard. There are periods of grind, which you can expect from turn based RPGs, but that has always been my bag - so take into account your personal preferences here. The battle system starts off relatively simple and straight-forward, however the game becomes more elaborate as the enemy parties have varied and mixed up vulnerabilities and attack patterns - that you will be putting more thought into how you use your BP more and more as your reach later chapters. Which gets me to the story.

The individual stories are very interesting, as are the characters you enlist and follow along with. Now - while that is true, this leads me to the one (and probably only) main issue I have with the game. The characters rarely interact with one another. Loose ties until later in the game, which seems odd in the early chapters. Just a band of strangers helping each other out or something? But it gets better - I promise (maybe a mild spoiler, I guess).

Additionally, I have to comment on the fact that the Voice acting is standout excellent - an A+ effort for the western release, wish this much effort was put into all VA for Japanese imports. It must be lauded.

Story- 8 characters in this game that have their own self-contained story. I understand why people dont like that the stories dont come together in one overarching story, but whether that affects your choice in purchasing the game or not is up to you. For the stories themselves, some are pretty interesting like Cyrus or Therion, while others like Primrose, Olberic and Alfyn are pretty average, "safe" stories. Now though the characters themselves dont really come together, what I really like is how the lore that centers around in each of the stories, help give a much bigger world and connects the stories themselves more than the characters. There's also a secret 9th path, well if u could call it that, that does bring the lore and the 8 paths together a good bit. (Reason for why the 8 character's stories happened and indirectly involved with each other) But on how to find the secret path you will have to find yourself.
    >Graphics- Its what the devs called "2D-HD" which honestly does look great. The pixel art is gorgeous, the 3D models are simple yet effective. The pixel textures do kind of repeat, which honestly is great for nostalgic purposes of the limited memory of 16bit games. Some of the techniques they use in the game is pretty advanced like Bokeh DoF, complex specular maps, water is beautifully animated and have their own reflections, all objects that im aware of interact with the light, the character sprites themselves hav their own real time shadows that interact with light also, the small cloud shadows that move across the scene, alpha effects are pretty high res, etc. All give this game such beauty, it almost gives a sense of it being a living diorama. 720p 30fps Docked and 576p 30fps Handheld, which is understandable tbh with the techniques it uses. Its kinda hard to see the lower res which is great tbh.
    >Music- The music is gorgeous and blends pretty well to feel like a background that honestly makes me feel immersed in the world. It also contains 3 different Battle themes, so you wont grow tired of hearing the same theme throughout the game, like other games do. Some of my favorite themes are from the Woodlands and Frostlands
    >Gameplay- Whichever character you start out with has the combat start out pretty simple with BP (that feels just like Brave in Bravely Default), where you can stack and use these points that can make you hit the enemy multiple times, boost how much health you can heal, boost magic damage or increase how many turns you have a status buff. As you level up and collect other party members, the game auto scales its level requirements in each of the areas for you to traverse in for combat. As you defeat each enemy encounter you get Jp (job points) which you can stock up. You start out with a base job that pertains to the character and these Jp can be used to unlock more skills that pertains to your job. (each unlock will increase the amount of Jp you need for next unlock; 50, 100, 500, etc.) As you unlock more skills of your job, you unlock Support skills which can be used in combination with any other support skill unlocks from other 2ndary jobs. (can equip up to 4) There's a total of 12 jobs in this game, 8 of them are the ones that pertain to each character (Dancer, Apothecary, Warrior, Merchant, Scholar, Thief, Hunter and Cleric) but their are also 4 secret jobs that are technically like a fusion between 2 jobs in the pool of 8. They can only be obtained by going through their dungeons which require to be very high level'd. (Starseer, Runelord, Warmaster, Sorcerer) Unlike obtaining the other 8 jobs by simply finding their cave, and walk up to it and grab it. Game requires deep strategy the farther you get in. When to correctly time your use of BP and amount, which characters to give ur BP, who to buff, etc. The game constantly keeps you engaged. I've had a few team wipes caused by one **** up in my choices. The game is very grindy also. Their are also Path Actions that are unique to each character....well technically 4 different ones where each one is shared between 2 characters with small variations.(Purchase/Steal, Challenge/Provoke, Scrutinize/Inquire, Allure/Guide) These do have some relevance in need to be used for the stories.
    >>In conclusion, this is a beautiful game with great music and gameplay. I haven't played many classic 16bit JRPGs but this is definitely a game I do recommend to people who love nostalgia, a good challenge or just like playing retro games. (and also dont mind the grind it requires, or a more or less average overall story)
    >>Rating: 8.7/10
Update: Beaten the True Final Boss in Octopath. It was a 2 phase fight and made u use all 8 of ur party members. But man its one of those games where the Final boss actually requires skill/strategy to defeat instead of just grinding away in levels. (levels only give increment boost) Now THIS is wht a Final Boss/Super Boss shuld b like. Very few Jrpgs actually make it a challenge nowadays tht require skill.

Alfyn's story in particular was a snoozefest for me while Primroses had me all emotional. The mechanics are solid and deliver a great turn based rpg. The progression is pretty fun, but I would have prefered if it were deeper. If each job had split off into two advanced jobs and you had to choose which one to advance to, that would have been great. Not only would have their been more jobs, as I finished the game long not needing jp, but it would have deeper customization options. The dancer could advance to either assassin or necromancer (physical burst damage or dark magic). There also could have been a better end game. As it is, I think *slight spoiler* there is just one dungeon. A whole post game main quest chain would have really let you make use of *slight spoiler* those 4 jobs you can unlock.

    1. Mechanics
The mechanics are smooth and feel great. Its a classic turn based system with the bar showing who turn it is and various action can effect battle order. It may play slow for those with no patience for this type of system but it looks great. Think the battle system from FFX with additional mechanics.

    2. Graphics / Sound
Honestly I was worried about going back to a 16 bit look but I was so wrong to worry. The Sprites are adorable and very expressive. Combine them with excellent lighting and haunting sound tract and you have got a recipe for success. I cannot believe how beautiful this game looks in a classic sense. Final Fantasy has gone for photo realism now adays and Dragon Quest is going with the anime look but Octopath say screw that I can make old school look cool.

    3. Story
The stories are very fun and sometimes haunting. I made a deeper emotional connection with some of the characters in the first few minutes than other video game protags after 15+ hours (Looking at you .Hack... so boring). Really this story was a breath of fresh air after the failures of most other games the past few years. I mean the big titles like GOW, Persona, Horizon, and Nier were all great but leave them behind and none of the non-AAA games really stood out to me UNTIL NOW.

Summary: BUY BUY BUY. I give this game 9/10

I really enjoyed Octopath Traveler, it's incredible.

    PROS:

    - The gameplay is in general outstanding.

    - The combat system is great and adds some interesting strategy. Battles are often engaging, there are real decisions to make involving when to use BP, whether to cast status effects, or when to use Steal or Collect commands.

    - Outfitting the party is a lot of fun, choosing which characters, equipment, jobs and skills to use to create a balanced or focused mix. There are a lot of choices to make, but there are only 10 or so stats that can be affected. The process was always fun, and never felt "fiddly" or confusing.

    - The graphics are fantastic, the world map, character art, diverse monsters, backgrounds, boss art, dynamic atmosphere effects, etc, etc are all completely awesome, it's a gorgeous game.

    - The voice acting is good to great. I've heard some bad voice acting in the past and thought that this voice acting was fine. The key problem in general with voice acting is when it takes you out of the experience because it's bad or over the top, but that happened very rarely for me with this game. There is quite a lot of voice acting in this game and I'm glad they have it in there, it really does add a lot to the experience.

    - The music is exceptional and there is a lot of it, I didn't really get bored of the battle music. There are multiple boss and battle musics so that helps.

    - The stories are good to great. Each character has 4 chapters (Which each take 1-2 hours each). In each you have to travel to a town on the overworld, advance the story in each town, go through a dungeon level, and defeat a boss. Each of these 4 steps can take 15-30 minutes. It's a bit formulaic, but each chapter feels a lot different than the last, as each character advances on their journey. Most of the chapter stories are quite engaging, and there are only a couple that I thought were a bit odd, or somewhat unresolved. I personally love the "16-bit theater" which is a bit exaggerated, and I thought the writing was really good.

    CONS:

[Edit: I have played beyond the 8 main stories and completed more side quests, and as a result I need to remove some of the Cons from the list!]

    - The side quests have issues. It's too easy to complete some of the NPC side quests inadvertently without reading any of the dialog. I often complete them unintentionally without knowing it. Side quests should require some kind of purposeful action by the player. Other side quests are extremely ambiguous, sometimes you have to travel to a certain person in a specific town, but there are 24 towns! I didn't know I'd have to be taking notes on every NPC in every town so I'd know which of the hundreds of villagers to talk to for a given situation. There needs to be better hints than what is recorded in each Journal entry.

    - I actually didn't have to grind for the entire main game, which was fine, but it meant that I was a little overpowered for the entire 2nd half of the game, it wasn't a big deal, but I was looking for a little more challenge towards the end.

    - More meaningful inter-character interactions would have been good.

Not much else to say, I really enjoyed the whole experience, it took about 90 hours or so and I still have a bunch of post-game side quest dungeons to explore.

What a beautiful and subtle game this is. Music and artistry are masterful done.

Its not without some room for improvement though, the ties that bind the 8 characters together require a lot of digging, and while you can get to the credits without exploring deeper into the world's lore I urge anyone to pursue the "optional" super boss, which neatly wraps the adventure together.

The game is gorgeous. It is a callback to SNES style of RPG, like FF6, but modernized with shimmering water and snow. The music in this are amazing! Every land has a different sound and gives you a different feel when you go from one place to another. Some stories are weaker than others, like Tressa’s which has become convoluted towards he end. The lack of overarching story for the cast is also a con.

A breath of fresh air in an action RPG dominated time. Square found a way to write a love letter to 90's JRPG fans. Innovative combat, wonderful music, and a colorful cast make Octopath Travelers a great addition to JPRG fans and Switch owners alike.

Seems like Square Enix is convinced that graphics and contstant action are the only way to go which has completely ruined the Final Fantasy series for me as it just turns out to be a terrible action game labeled as a Final Fantasy. There are only two complaints I have about this game. The first problem is that all the weapon sprites look exactly the same and this really bothers me for some reason but not a big issue for most people. The second problem is that the characters really have no interaction between them for most of the game. Its like they just travel together for no reason and ignore the fact that others exist when going through their stories. Other than that, I am loving the fact that I get a new turn based RPG instead of having to replay old PS1 and PS2 games to get a great RPG playthrough. Well done and I hope this sparks the return of turn based combat that never really needed to go in the first place. Expand

The only flaw that I can give to this game is the fact that the stories from the 8 characters are separated from each other but this fact, in my opinion doesn't change my game experience that much. To conclude, I said this game is unique because each character has different habilities, each character has different gameplay, each character has a different story and the artstyle even though pixeled it is in HD which make it gorgeous with the various environments the huge map offers. Octopath Traveler quickly has become one of my favorite JRPGS. In my opinion, very few games- be they old or new- can stack up to the overall quality of this game. In my opinion, very few games- be they old or new- can stack up to the overall quality of this game. The music is compelling and original, while also serving as a nice throwback to older titles of this genre. The same can be said of the “16 bit” graphics- the sprites are reminiscent of FF6/Suikoden 2, but Octopath differentiates its models by placing them on a three-dimensional backdrop which creates several instances of “hidden”, FF7-like areas of the map. Generic village interactions can be spiced up with character specific skills (Path Actions), coming in a “good” and “bad” variety. For example, the Warrior and Hunter have “Duel” (good) and “Provoke” (bad) respectively, which allow them to challenge a town member to a fight. There is no consequence if the Warrior loses his 1v1 duel, but the Hunter, aided by a cohort of animal companions, will cause a reputation dip in town on a loss.

Characters all also have unique battle skills in combat (Talents). The fusion of Talents, weaknesses, breaks, role differentiation/flexibility, Skills/abilities, and Battle Point storage/management propels combat to the top of the list of Octopath’s strengths. This combat serves as a clear spiritual successor to Bravely Default, but also is unique enough in its own rights via slight tweaks to its progenitor’s system. Very few battles will ever feel similar, which helps with the stereotypical humdrums of JRPG grinding. The one area in which Octopath falls short is in the plurality of stories- rather than one cohesive tale- accented by the lack of character interactions. All in all, each individual vignette is still compelling enough to hold your attention enough to want to complete each story. If you can look past this, I promise you will not be disappointed with what this game has to offer.

Seriously, buy this game! It's worth the money! If you're unsure about buying it, try out the demo! It gives you 3 whole hours to play the game!

I've already played over 25 hours, and I'm not even done yet!

    PROS:

    Great graphics
    Great combat system
    Decent voice acting
    Great world (open world too)
Amazing music! (My favourite has to be the battle theme!)
    A lot of play time!

    CONS

There are side-quests in the game that are hard to understand. A character just tells you something, and gives you no hints whatsoever!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Have had 60+ hours on this game. reaching the final part of the game. here is my review:
    Pros
    - Very good gameplay
    - Caters to what JRPG fans have been wanting
    - Individually, storyline is magnificent for each of the 8 travelers
    - Addictive, at least for the initial 30-40hours
    - Great music

    Cons
    - As what some may have mentioned, the storyline tries very hard to interconnect all 8 characters.
however they are only barely connected. Even after doing all the subquests after completion as well as final dungeon (spoiler)
    - difficulty is decent.
    - A little bit of repetitiveness throughout the completion of quests & character storylines.
    - Background blur/graphics can take abit used to.. can sometimes confuse the player as to where to advance.

Hopefully they will improve on the cons of the game. There is room for improvement but this game is one of the best if not the best switch games.

The stories can sometimes get a bit too wordy for my taste, but overall they are interesting enough. The fact that the characters do not really interact doesn't bother me at all.

Aunque he jugado grandes juegos como God of War, Detroit become human o Super Smash Bros.

The presentation was just amazing. They develop “HD-2D” graphics. The landscapes and character design are just unique and refreshing to the eye. You can feel the throwback of old school JRPGs with the updated aesthetic. You’ll just be amaze on how they change and improve the pixel graphics.

The Battle system on the other hand feels familiar with a twist. It still incorporates the turn base system in the past but with the added Boosts system. The player has to choose the timing when to spend the Boosts points so that they can deal “massive damage.” It is a lot of damage when timed correctly. It’s simple concept but refreshing in the same time.

Music was god sent. Composer ,Yasunori Nishiki, created such an incredible sound track. The sound track was probably one of the best sound tracks I’ve ever heard. People should play the game with the music alone. Nishiki reminded me of Nobuo Uematsu when he created the music for Final Fantasy. The music was just timeless and legendary. Please listen to it, you’ll not be disappointed. You can find the whole soundtrack at spotify and youtube.

They story of Octopath individually was great. People can really feel the the trials and tribulation per character and how they face and grew from it. The overall story of as a group needs a little work BUT all was answered with the post game content. I was shock how all of it tied up in the end.

Overall Octopath was such breath of fresh air this generation and it didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for a JRPG to play just try Octopath.

So, what video games did I have, which I didn't finish yet, to play between December 2019 and January 2020? Pokemon Sword, the second route of Fire Emblem Three Houses and Final Fantasy 4 on the ioS. So basically, three RPGs. The last two RPGs I've said about, I've made really slow progress on them.
But when I remember Octopath Traveler existed, (last I've heard about Octopath Traveler was from one Nintendo Direct and more than a couple of Youtube thumbnails) I've looked at some of the trailers and played the 3-hour demo... And I was amazed by the 3-hour experience I had with the Octopath Traveler demo and so, I've bought the game! This experience, which took me at least 85-hours to finish, was a great one and so it's time to review OCTOPATH Traveler!
Also, today's my birthday! P.S. MY FOCUS IS UNPARALLELED!!!

You play as one of the eight travelers and make him/her your protagonist (I chose Cyrus), you start to embark on your protagonist's journey, and recruit the other seven travelers and progress their stories as well. Some traveler's stories (in many chapters) are really deep, dark, captivating or engaging, while other stories (in some chapters) are kinda lackluster and not really engaging. But the overall story is really engaging itself and there is an optional extended post-game story with a truly difficult final boss battle (let me remind you again that this is optional).
The gameplay is really creative, in which you have to break your enemies' weaknesses, and each traveler has their own jobs, in which they have their own abilities, attacks, and support skills. There are secondary jobs, in which they're your traveler's jobs and four secret jobs/classes but you'll probably need a guide for the secondary jobs and the four secret jobs/classes.
The visuals are absolutely outstanding and it definitely recaptures the 16-bit JRPGs. Seriously, you might want to stop playing the game to just look at the surroundings. The characters' and bosses' sprites have so much detail put into them, and they just look great!
The music is very amazingly orchestrated. But when it comes to the music in battles and boss-battles, it's really mindblowing! You should really appreciate the musicians and people who went for all of that effort in making Octopath Traveler's outstanding music. You should watch this Youtube video, "How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles", as it explains the music of Octopath Traveler and the transitions from this music piece to this boss battle theme.
When it comes to the side-stories (side-quests), lots of the side-stories don't really tell you (or at all) of what to do in the side-stories. You'll really need a guide for the side-stories. And it doesn't really help that the optional extended post-game story is locked behind at least six side-stories. Yup, you'll really need a guide for this.
The cast of characters is genuinely likable and unique, and the voice-acting is from well-done to extremely brilliant and talented. (I might be somewhat exaggerating)
The difficulty is truly quite tough, it really depends on what level your team is. On the map (of where it tells you where the traveler's next location is), it shows the traveler's next destination (in the next chapter) for their respective story, and it also shows what is the recommended level for the next chapter. I definitely recommend leveling your team (so basically grinding) around the recommended level. If the boss is too hard for you, either go to another's traveler's chapter or grind your team a few more levels. For really difficult boss battles, you'll need to understand the jobs' (and secret jobs') abilities, skills and support skills. So basically, for a difficult boss battle, you'll need to know what you're doing in the boss battle and to have a good (and solid) plan. It takes a lot of strategy and logical thinking to win a difficult boss battle. For the optional secret post-game story final boss, it takes massive amounts of strategy and critical thinking to win that boss battle, so GOOD LUCK!
There are multiple flaws within this game, from how broken the gameplay is (like exploiting the secret jobs' abilities), to how grinding works in this game. Seriously, there are a lot of minor and broken flaws in this game.

Octopath Traveler is partially excellent, and one of the greater JRPGs out there and this game will always have a special place in my heart. This game could've been better, but they tried and it worked somewhat perfectly well! From outstanding visuals to great voice-acting, how could you hate this game? (Well, there's the flaws...) Well, I really recommend trying out the Octopath Traveler demo for yourselves, and then you can decide whether to buy this game or not.
The score for Octopath Traveler is... 9.2! (9)

One of the best modern RPGs I've ever played. A complete experience with all the story and characters :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Octopath Traveler was overall a wonderful adventure, a real travel through a wonderful artistic design and accompanied by an equally wonderful OST.

Where to start ? Let me first say it took me 165 hours to finish the game 100%, and to be honest, my opinion on the game varied quite a lot along all these hours. In the first few hours, you select your first character, discover the graphical style of the game and the gameplay with a lot of pleasure. Artistically, and although a bit more efforts could have been done on some sprites, the game just looks beautiful. It's a pleasure to go through the wide variety of landscapes. The turn-based combats are simple but offer their dose of complexity when you start fighting stronger bosses.
After a few hours, once you have unlocked a few more characters, this is where you can start analyzing this game more closely, and unfortunately see the few flaws of Octopath Traveler. Story is a core element of the game with an overwhelming amount of dialogues and, as I will repeat later, the end of the story completely justify spending so much time going through the game. But honestly, some characters have much more interesting lore and stories than others. Without spoiling, the background story of Alfyn, for example, does not seem to be leading anywhere and have any structure, and even the bit of suspense that is created is solved by a scenaristic shortcut. In contrast, the stories of Olberic and Primrose are much more interesting. This creates, in the early/mid-game, an asymmetry in the expectations from each storyline.
The second core problem of Octopath Traveler, which I must say got me quite bored when I reached about 50/60 hours of play, is that the structure of almost the chapters in the game (except a few ones) is exactly the same: you arrive in town with an intrigue ongoing, you progress through a few dialogues giving the context, you go a little further using the special talent of your character, and this leads you to a dungeon. Dungeons are also all the same in their structure: an open area where foes spawn randomly, and a few chests to open, until you reach the boss of the chapter. Once the boss is defeated, the chapter concludes with another few dialogues, setting up the stage for the next chapter. You can explore the vast world and find secret areas, but these will also always have the same structure, so much that after some time you can start predicting where to find secret bonuses/solutions to secondary quests without thinking too much.

If you are a player in the middle of the game, I would however suggest to keep going. Why ? Because weirdly enough, for me the real fun started after about 100 hours of play. Some stories keep being uninteresting, but some are concluded very nicely, although none of them has a very surprising ending. But after all 8 storylines are finished, the game is actually not completely finished... and I don't want to spoil from there on, but this is when you start to explore more, discover improvements to your fighting skills, and with perseverance you can reach the real end of the game... I can't say much about it, but let me just say that even a completely boring storyline like Alfyn's is somehow rehabilitated by the glorious ending. It was crazy how the end of the game completely changed my way of seeing the game, and even made me want to play it over once more.

To complement this review, I must insist and say again that the OST is just divine... The musics keep playing in my head every day since I finished the game. Most of them give a feeling of melancholy, harmony or peace. Some relax you, some give a sad or epic background to the story. A brilliant and poetic piece of art.

Octopath Traveler says its name: it's a real travel through thousands of beautiful landscapes, stories that stutter a little in midgame but come all together in a glorious ending, a simple but efficient turn-based gameplay, all of this glorified by amazing OST. A game that I will not forget.

While those looking for a deep, story-heavy RPG might find Octopath Traveler lacking, the game is a hugely enjoyable modern take on traditional turn-based games of yesteryear with a collection of short story, rather than novel-length, narratives. The graphics represent the pinnacle of pixel art and the score is amazing. This game was pretty much a system-seller for me and well worth every penny and hour spent with it.

You can either hate Octopath Traveler’s art direction or love it, but it definitely will not leave you indifferent. Distinct visuals are just one of the game’s many strengths which make it a feast for the fans of jRPGs – and much more than that. It’s not flawless though – the dungeons are bland and there are virtually no relations between the characters in your party as they don’t communicate almost at all. [09/2018, p.66]

Octopath Traveler is unapologetically old-school, and would not have been out of place if it had released back in the golden age of JRPGs.
