My Universe – PET CLINIC CATS & DOGS is not the game I had hoped it would be. Instead, it’s a generic and repetitive simulation game with gameplay that doesn’t fit the price tag.

Rather than being a game for the whole family, My Universe – PET CLINIC CATS & DOGS is very much for younger kids. I can see them enjoying it for a couple of hours before the repetition cements itself. But this is a $29.99 game, and there’s no way to justify that price. The quality isn’t high enough for what ends up being an average game in most respects that kids will grow bored with.

I fully expected a rough around the edges experience, but not one that was this achingly monotonous. I bought this for my five year old daughter and after about four hours, have ended up half playing it through because she gets bored after a while, but wants to watch the progression, which is minimal. Essentially, dogs or cats come through the vet doors. You “treat them” which involves repetitive mini games. The games don’t vary much, press and hold the a button, or follow a sequence, move the cursor over an animal. It’s rudimentary at best. For the treatment of each animal you get money and along with fulfilling a list of jobs (watering plants, treating so many dogs or cats etc) you level up. You can then spend the money on creating new rooms (which opens up new mini games), but some are locked until you reach a specific level. When a new animal comes through the doors I hoped that there would be some variety, but in reality certainly in the first 5 hours, you get either a pet who has ticks, a pet who needs medicine or a pet that needs a booster injection.

And therein lies the problem. It’s so monotonous and slow paced to get anywhere and open up anything remotely interesting. With about ten to fifteen hours grinding (and it really is a grind) you can get to a stage where everything is opened up. But really, each of the other rooms you open up are a variation on an already tired theme. I love playing games with my daughter, she loves them too. But this one lacks significant value, I’ve had free iPad apps with more variety, content and challenge.
