There is a lot I enjoyed with Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. When I’m winning, I like the gameplay loop. The art is fantastic, and looks great when I play in hand held mode. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes starts out as a welcoming game. After a few battles, I begin to see the cracks. Enemy heroes I play against are two, sometimes three, levels ahead of me, something that is not easy to overcome. The random drops of units on my side don’t feel equal to the ones my AI enemy gets. I feel like I’m always on the defensive during the campaign. But the multiplier is excellent, pass-and-play is exactly what I want in a game like this.

Clash of Heroes is basically a puzzle game crossed with a turn-based strategy title. Players take turns to move their individual units aroundClash of Heroes is basically a puzzle game crossed with a turn-based strategy title. Players take turns to move their individual units around on their grid in an effort to stack similarly coloured units vertically (to start charging for an attack) or horizontally (to create a defensive wall). After a set number of turns the attack launches across the centre line towards the opponent's army, interacting with any enemy units which are in the way, and possibly damaging the enemy leader as well.

Specials units are also dropped at random and these launch more powerful attacks once activated. The single player campaign provides good value entertainment (and needs to be played to unlock extra characters) but, for me at least, it is the multiplayer that has brought me back to play time and time again as it can often become a very tactical affair.

This Definitive Edition is essentially the same as the 2009 original just with a bit of upgraded artwork.

So simple to play, but experimenting with different units, items and strategies makes a playthrough of this a really enjoyable and engrossing experience. I enjoyed the story and I really appreciate some of the 'unique' challenges implemented in some of the battles to switch things up a bit. Levelling up in this game is always satisfying, as is unlocking and playing with new characters and new battle units. It took me 34 hours to finish the campaign and I loved every minute of it! You must give this a try if you like turn based strategy games! Full Review »

The core gameplay holds up after all these years, yet other parts show how dated/lack of development compared to today's expectations.

The core gameplay holds up after all these years, yet other parts show how dated/lack of development compared to today's expectations.

    Cons
    - The writing is just passable enough to progress the story, although it's really an eye-roll at times... I did find a lot of the characters to be annoying to indifferent.
-The factions that you play as in the story surprisingly get worse??? Very odd design choice, but it's noticeable starting at act three, where you have to grind battles for experience points to level up. Necromancy faction feels very weak until you get a certain few artifacts and the better units. Then after that the demon faction feels also weak for awhile and same thing you have to grind battles. Then when you get the extra turn artifact it becomes too easy. The last faction feels the weakest, the magic faction is way too weak, all of the units just feel overall like there's too many negative aspects, and the hero ability is just terrible, it's up to chance if it does anything. An easy fix they coulda done is pick five spots for the lightning bolts to land, and you cant pick the same spot multiple times, that's way more fair for this ability. This in turn makes the last act of the story just drag on because the magic faction is just terrible and the fights take way too long, and just feels like a chore. I pretty much quit at this point because this feels like a difficulty spike but due to very poor design choice. For this being a definitive edition they could of maybe made some alterations to make this faction a bit stronger.
    - Some general bugs/poor design, as sometimes the music will play during a "cutscene/conversation" then abruptly stop when the conversation stops. Also during battle the music will sometimes not play, or a rather odd design it will play then finish the song, be quiet for a bit before playing another song, just kind of poor design.
    - In the story mode, I'm not sure why your "sidekick" for each act doesn't do anything. It would be cool if it was like a special unit, or they provide a small buff. Because their commentary during the story is very minimal and they don't add enough to the story.

    Pros
I like the overall art style, with the different designs for each of the factions and units.
If they ever make another game like this, I would like more dynamic backgrounds
-The core gameplay is honestly quite fun, I like the strategy that results of the combine 3 units, with also other units that require two, or even four. and being able to combine/stack. I wish there were more games like this to be honest.
-Gameplay and controls are responsive and easy to understand

Overall, a solid game, but with some flaws.
