This is a long awaited game in the Metroid series and as a huge fan of the series this is amazing. The graphics and art style look great and the gameplay is fun and challenging. Honestly, I'm not the biggest Metroid fan. I like most of the games well enough, but I find many of them aren't worth the high scores they consistently achieve. Honestly, I'm not the biggest Metroid fan. I like most of the games well enough, but I find many of them aren't worth the high scores they consistently achieve. In a year like 2021, where it feels like a lot of games are good but nothing special, Metroid Dread successfully provided me with the best gaming experience I've had this year.

For what it's worth, Dread is definitely the most appropriate title for this game, thanks to the horrific creatures inhabiting the planet you're trying to dig your way out of, and extremely strong robots called E.M.M.I. Those robots become increasingly more powerful as the game goes on, and become particularly difficult to deal with. Being chased by the E.M.M.I. is panic-inducing, and you'll likely die to them many times, which only serves to bring about that feeling of dread when you realise there are more waiting for you.

I don't think the game is perfect, but many of my complaints aren't anything too major. The controls, combat, bosses and story all feel great for me, and I took the time to get every possible bonus I could which took about 20 hours for me. I'm aware many people are comparing this game to Hollow Knight, as a single playthrough of this game is much shorter than that game, however I'll argue I enjoyed Metroid Dread a bit more than Hollow Knight, if only because I felt that Hollow Knight really started to drag on toward the end of it's play time, and some of the enjoyment was definitely lost on me because of that. Metroid Dread is condensed enough to not have such an issue, with bonuses for players that want to challenge themselves.

The best 2d metroid IMO, had sky high expectations for the game and they were exceeded. It's a combination of the best elements of fusion and super metroid, along with a few new elements(e.g. the EMMIs) that work fantastically.

Pretty good 2D Metroidvania and will satisfy all the cravings of Super Metroid lovers. A couple of new gameplay features and upgrades keep the series fresh so it doesn't just feel like a rehash. My biggest gripe is the map is absolute garbage. It's messy and really hard to distinguish all the symbols on it, which isn't a good thing for this kind of game.

People are complaining about the graphics. The graphics are fine. The art is actually beautiful. The animations are so well done they remind me of the first time i played the original Prince of Persia or Flash Back and seeing the rotoscoped animations. Dreads animations are site to behold at a rock solid 60fps in game.

Play control is tight and fluid.

Music is subtle where it needs to be and nostalgic and epic where it needs to be . Perfect.

People who complain about how linear it is haven't played it . That is just a fact. The game is a perfect hybrid between Metroid 3 and 4. It does funnel you to where you need to go on a set path when it needs to, but also completely opens up and lets you explore to your hearts content in between big moments. I honesty don't know how they could have done this any better than they did. It is near perfect.

The challenge is much higher than previous 2D entries but , its also 2021 .Games are just harder now and to be honest i feel like if it was any easier people would be complaining it was too easy, so I think they found a good balance. Tough but fair.

Too be honest the only thing that is keeping me from giving a perfect 10 is some questionable save location decisions where a part of the level will close off and not allow you to back track to a save point for a bit , and sometimes that is exactly when i want to save. So I'm forced to play for a bit longer than i want for that session to find the new save point. That does get annoying.

Other wise as a long time Metroid fan I couldn't have asked for a better sequel after waiting 19 years, and it is definitely one of the strongest games in an already amazing series. Buy it .

Having been too young to enjoy Super Metroid when it first released, and having went down the Prime path when Fusion released on the same day, I've never played a 2D Metroid on release before this one. Now with SO MANY games like it out, Dread comes at a time when Metroid games are just the funny word at the beginning of the genre name. Samus Returns on the 3DS a few years back was an ok return to form for the 2D games, but it was still just remake. Now the first true new 2D Metroid game has come out and it does alot of things right but also fails to stick the landing for me.
What the game gets very right is the atmosphere and the tone set by the game. What little story is here is done well, even with the few voice over lines sprinkled in throughout the game but they are very few and far between. I would say, however, that you really need to at least have a general grasp of the overall storyline to understand some of the stills that show up sometimes because the game does nothing to explain anything that's happened in the past, outside of a rushed opening movie. It also really does a great job of making Samus a supreme badass in cut scenes and how she kills bosses. I liked how they portrayed her here, even though she literally only says 1 line in the game. The boss encounters are fun, but I was really hoping to see certain staples of the franchise return in some way or another that just arent present here at all. No spoilers but the one returning boss was at best 3rd on the list of bosses I wanted to see again. Although the final boss was actually pretty fun, if brutally hard at first.
However the game falls behind several other side scrolling games in the genre that Metroid popularized over the years. The controls are very hit or miss for me. Certain moves just arent very responsive, like the Screw Attack and the Speed Booster, especially when you're required to hit them with pixel perfect accuracy to get some of the hardest power ups in the game. Also the game seems almost allergic to indicating to you where you need to go next in the story. And the ships AI that's supposed to do that for you is basically no help at all throughout the whole game. I spent 12 hours getting 100% on my first run through and about a 1/4th of that was me being lost trying to find either the path forward or an out of the way pickup that did nothing to help my overall battle prowess.
At the end of the day, Dread is a very good Metroidvania game that does alot of things well and, most likely, ends the main Metroid storyline on a high note. However there are better games in the genre now that would be far more deserving of your attention, if you've not played them. And its hard to argue that this game is even better then Super Metroid. Dread has its merits but it does feel like Samus and her crew have been passed by other games in the genre that bares its name.

10+ years later for me, and near enough 20 for long time fans, we finally get to see what happens next, and it doesn't disappoint. The setting of the game felt extremely atmospheric, the lore implications extremely interesting, and the game play felt absolutely amazing after an initial teething period.
I would also like to point out just how *detailed* the backgrounds to rooms are in this game. Metroidvania's are a type of game that will have many rooms, and they could of just gone the easy route and made them copy and pastes, but almost every single room from start to finish, felt unique.
The new abilities felt amazing to use, and Samus has never been faster, leading to some extremely tense and adrenaline fuelled boss fights.
I can't recommend this game enough, this was almost everything I've wanted in a Metroid game in the last 10 years.

It's a great game and Metroid is probably my favorite franchise but I wish it did a little more and after 100%'ing it in 10 hours (I don't count the filler like Hard Mode which is cheaply hidden behind a Normal playthrough and the speedruns) it doesn't feel worth $60.

The exploration is very well designed, you never feel as though the game is holding your hand, as the level design itself subtly guides the player to the critical path. Difficulty balance is another strong point, the game is certainly challenging, but is never unfair; the addition of checkpoints directly before boss fights and E.M.M.I. encounters saves a lot of time in backtracking and is a great quality-of-life improvement. The storytelling is probably the best in the Metroid series so far, cutscenes and plot are placed very deliberately throughout, and never feel like they get in the way of gameplay. The length feels just about perfect, there's more than enough content here and it never feels as though Dread has any real bloat. The game does end a bit abruptly, but this is a well established series trope, so it's not really a big deal. The boss fights are exciting and a great challenge, with Samus moving the fastest and most fluid she ever has. The game is lots of fun, I recommend. Expand

The only thing I would like to see added to this game is incentive to complete on the higher difficulty. Like in Metroid Samus Returns you get the Fusion suit. Dread is awesome. The game is difficult enough for an adult to find challenging. While the game is non-linear like the past entries in the series, there is a better intuition of where to go next based on the map design. Gameplay is excellent. The atmosphere is good.

Only thing holding it back is sub-par music and the intro narration is a bit lame.

    Gameplay: 10

    Conclusion:

You don't have the proper tools to stealth or escape from then. And you have to do it over and over again. What where they thinking. So frustrating.

Then the balancing is an issue. The bosses are way to difficult compared to the rest of the game. I don't want it easy (love me a soulslike and other hard games). But this one is frustratingly difficult and it has to do with difficulty spikes, where the boss battles stand out. The boss attackrate is extreme you often have extremely small windows to attack instead you are running, jumping, sliding phasing out of the way from the endless projectiles. Doesn't make you feel powerful at all.

the there is something off with the controls. The character moves to fast. You can nudge to move a little, if you nudge you probably fall of the ledge you are standing on. It just doesn't feel right and that is important when precision movement is required in combat and traversal. They got this one wrong.

I would not recommend this game. I rarely throw my controller in frustration. Whit this game I have done it several times. I would say play Super Metroid or Zero Mission instead of this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. VERY MINOR SPOILERS in this review.

Let me preface by saying that I am a new Metroid fan, having never played a game before in the series. I had to create an account to post this review, that should say a lot about how much I love this game, barely 3 days after launch. This game is SOOOO GOOD and such a joy to play! Samus's movement is really smooth and fluid, the platforming feels really good, and over the course of the game, the various power-ups you receive make it even more of a joy to traverse the environments.

The enemies start off pretty weak but as you explore newer areas in planet ZDR, you start encountering tougher ones, some that can even take out an entire energy bar. But the combat options are very good, the melee counter in particular is excellent and even absurdly powerful at times. The bosses are pretty tough, but fair, and you feel satisfied after beating them.

As for the EMMI zones and the EMMIs themselves, I really love this mechanic, makes the game live up to its name "Dread", the fear you experience while evading capture from these enemies is really fun to experience. The EMMIs progressively get tougher, but like the bosses, it feels super satisfying to beat them. I have only reached mid-game and the difficulty has gradually ramped up.

Performance of the game is pretty much near perfect, except for some of the elevator and train sections where the framerate takes a hit, but that's nothing to lose sleep over. The combat and platforming are pretty smooth and look really good in near constant 60 fps.

Honestly, my only complaints are the boss themes seem slightly generic, not too unique, and that you can't remap the controls in-game (although you do get used to it after a while). Even then, I rate this 10/10 and an absolute must have, even if you have never played a Metroid game before. I've read a lot about how the duration is pretty low, and while I'm someone who prefers longer duration games (cost is a big deal for me, so I prefer a good price-playtime ratio), in this case I do not regret spending $60 on this game, purely because every moment playing it feels so amazing and enjoyable.

I have to acknowledge first my own bias: Metroid means a lot to me, and I'm an unabashed enthusiast of the Metroid-vania genre. If you're someone who finds games like Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Ori, past Metroid titles, etc... too difficult or frustrating (or just uninteresting), then this game isn't for you.
However, if you're either a veteran fan of the genre like me, or you're just

However, if you're either a veteran fan of the genre like me, or you're just looking for something tougher than the standard Switch release and are looking to try something new, then this is a MUST play. MercurySteam has easily crafted their finest game to date, and created another worthy entry to the 2D Metroid saga. The design and form here is so tight that I legitimately can't conjure any criticisms. It's simply that good.

Welcome back, Samus. We missed you. See you again when we finally get Metroid Prime 4.

Wow, what a hell of a game. Have always loved Metriod since 1989 on the NES. My favourite is Super Metroid for SNES!! I love this saga!

Don't understand the massive negativity around this game. "the game is too hard" I'm not even wasting my breath on that one. "the games exploration isn't as good" that, is something I agree with. Having recently played Samus returns, the difference in exploration is night and day. But they traded for better gameplay, which oo boy. Samus controls the best she ever has. I don't even wanna begin to try and explain why the negative user reviews make no logical sense and have the level of comprehension of baby's and how or why they completely miss the point of the emmi system. It was a really cool experience, overall, Mercury Steam refined the formula and listened to player feedback from Samus Returns.

The movement is superb and the combat is waaaaay better. The story: amazing, with a good conclusion and a lot of lore. I think it ends the main storyline on a really good note. The only thing that sets back this game for me and the reason I didn't give it

The only thing that sets back this game for me and the reason I didn't give it a 10 is the soundtrack. It's forgettable and there isn't a piece that made me go "wow, instant banger" I think they could've done a better job on the music department.

I have always been in love with the metroid series and this one is in the top 3 for sure right below super metroid and above metroid fusion. It is a fun and tense experience with amazing gameplay and beautiful 2D environments.

The game runs smooth, looks good and is quite satisfying to play. It encourages to explore and proceed deeper into the world in order to find its collectibles and power ups. This has been done before in all Metroid games so there was nothing new in that case. Me waiting for a Metroid game for 4 years and then finishing the game in like 9 hours is quite disappointing. For a Nintendo franchise and for such a big game studio I was expecting 40-50 hours of playtime. I loved playing hollow knight so my expectations ware somewhere there but unfortunately the game ended before I got even excited. All in all good game, who ever likes Metroid games will feel like home but for the price and length of the game…. Not worth it. Expand

NOPE! DO NOT BUY!!! *** Although Samus’s new design is decent, I’ll give ‘em that… with Nintendos track record and just based on the gameplay and look of the game alone, and if you’re someone with half a brain, you don’t even need to play to know that this game is a worthless, insulting, money grubbing, lazy, sorry excuse piece of s#@% of a game and barely even that! No love for this franchise in almost 2 decades and this is what we get?! Nintendo is always at least a whole generation behind the competition in terms of power and graphics but they still could have done better than this. There is no excuse for this BS! They don’t even care. Like Disney and their endless barrage of tasteless unoriginal live action remakes. If they’re going back to the side scrolling roots, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it better be on the same level as games like Ori, especially if you have the balls to want $60! This is barely a step above “Other M” and that game was also pure trash! Yet there are plenty of morons out there that just eat this s#@% up and that’s how Nintendo keeps making money and continuing to produce utter garbage because they know you will buy it… and pay full price too! This game is worth maybe $5. Definitely not worthy of a full $60!!! It’s like a cheap, rushed mobile phone game for kids and the graphics suck! The only thing missing is ads. Watching the gameplay and seeing enemies, big and small just disappear in what looks like a singe frame when you kill them, with no particle affects, no corpses, no cool explosions, just… nothing. And that’s after you fire you’re entire arsenal at them and don’t even make a dent because the game forces you to rely on this new dumb blocking/counter system that seems to be the only way to actually get through the game. No voice acting, no dynamic backgrounds or meaningful scenery, bland atmospheric music… everything’s flat, nothing stands out and nothing is memorable, except the fact that you just suffered through this sorry excuse of a game and will never get that time back. It’s like they did the bare minimum to get a passing grade of 65. But this is a solid F+ and that’s being generous. True gamers and fans know better and will not put up with this BS. Still to this day, the greatest entry in the franchise is Metroid Prime! The first game, not the sorry @$$ sequels that started this downhill plummet into where we are now. Anyway, a big F U to Nintendo and I hope you go broke if you’re going to continue to push this crap on us, you disgusting, fat, lazy, money grubbing A-holes!!! Expand

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
