However, I am delighted to say that this game absolutely exceeds ALL expectations. I've not beaten the game yet, but I'm willing to say this may be the single most perfect Metroid game Nintendo has ever given us. This game, unlike so many others in the last few years, gets a 10/10 from me, and this is high praise, as I am a very harsh critic.

The reason I'm able to give M:D such a high score is because it doesn't hold back in the slightest. If it's going to punch you, it's going to give you everything it has. Bosses are beautifully crafted and not one single boss has been too easy or lame. Every single one has challenged me, killed me, and forced me to think outside the box to beat them. Each death adds to your skill in ways most other games don't even touch on, even Samus Returns.

This game is built on the Samus Returns gameplay style. While I really enjoyed SR, M:D takes this engine to a new level. There are numerous quality of life improvements and tons of well thought out mechanics, much more so than SR. If Samus Returns were a food, it would be a hamburger, filling and delicious. If Metroid Dread were a meal, it would be a 3 course at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. I mean this in every way. A hamburger you eat and you're done. M:D just keep coming and coming and coming and its amazing and terrifiying and beautifully crafted.

The sound design is so incredibly amazing. Rarely do I find myself in quiet rooms outside the safe area. The ambiance is superb. The soundtrack makes your heart race. When you're in danger, YOU ARE IN DANGER, and the audio beats right along with your poor overencumbered heart. The music and sound design makes this game feel like, "It's GOING," or, "It's HAPPENING!" Moments where you catch your breath are sweet sighs of relief, readying yourself to enter that doorway and get back in the fight or flight again. The only criticism I have on sound is that they reused the heat and lava warning sound from SR. That blaring alarm sounds so low quality next to all the other sounds. They also reused the parry sound, but that fits right in.

Art. Art is good. This game's got hella art. See the art. Very pretty, much gaze. The graphics, while not the best, still looks incredible. The stylization Nintendo is known for for making lower resolutions look outstanding is here. There are aliasing lines, but I can ignore those.

Enemies are much more varied than in SR. Each one has its own timing for parry, and some don't even have parry as an option. There seem to be enemy types that all areas abide by, but instead of how they did it in SR where new enemies were just recolors, every area has their own enemy models. Going to a new area and seeing new gnarly toothed floating things of rage is really cool and every zone has enemies that fit it's environment.

So far the story is phenomenal, and I rarely give stories high praise. I won't say much here because these are spoilers you won't want spoiled. Needless to say, Metroid type s*** is HAPPENING! This game has a lot of cannon. Metroid Fusion is important, being the last mainline 2D Metroid game in the series. Exploring the game later on after a certain event takes place (you'll know what I mean when you get there) is unbelievably cool and nostalgic. Beating my first... uh... certain.... boss... filled me with IMMENSE pride, like I showed it whos boss again and told it to sit tf back down. This story is very well crafted and I hate that I shant say anything more about it. 10/10. This game also has voice acting! And it's good!
Controls are tight. If you get hit, you are unable to move for a split second. The puzzles in this game are all well thought out and thought provoking. There were a couple spots where I thought I was softlocked but I was just being a big ol stupidhead. Being a veteran of Metroid games, I feel I have been able to find my way through the maze of the map fairly easily, but then again, I think the map design and room placement is also just really good.

If you like Metroid, have played a 2D Metroid in the past, and have played Samus Returns or Metroid Fusion, this game is for you.

Just a disclaimer for the weak of heart. This game is named Metroid Dread for a reason. This game will fill you with dread as you watch helplessly as you die. There are zones where you are powerless against the specific type of foe. I joked with one of my friends that this game could have also been called Metroid: Scary or Me
    Edit:
I have beaten the game and hard mode. If I had one critique it's how your aim locks in the horizontal position even when holding down aim. Makes killing a certain ceiling emmi a bit difficult but not because it's actually hard.
This game is top ten, easy. Well done, developers.

This becomes a bigger problem the longer you play as more mechanics are added such as the shinesparking that the game relies way too much on in its shinesparking puzzles, they just arent fun as the solution is ususally obvious, just incredibly frustrating to do. Dreads controls need to be more tight for its difficulty to not feel cheap. Samus still moves with the same segmented crouch, then morph movement she had on snes and the stick sucks for it, the aiming is really good though so im glad they made that work well. The music is the worst from any metroid game, incredibly disappointing. EDIT: Now after reflecting for a while i think i was a bit hard on the game as i had decided to 100% before i started. The games controls become very frustrating first when you do several endgame shinesparking puzzles in a row. Im going to keep the score at a 7/10 because nintendo keeps the price at 60€ though Expand

I really didn't enjoy my time with Metroid Dread.

As others have said, the game is brutally hard. The enemies move extraordinarily quickly. And, when they connect, it's a huge amount of damage. Could the game be fixed simply with a difficulty slider? Heck, could an option to cut the damage dealt in half go a long way toward making it fun? Clearly, the developers must have realized

So, why isn't there a difficulty slider? I believe that if you could crank the thing down to easy mode that there wouldn't be anything left. They needed the difficulty to be hard, because: the story is thin and there's minimal world building. The puzzles aren't challenging. If you could play as a tourist, the game would just be too short, and you'd say it wasn't worth $60. (It's not worth $60.)

I had about four hours in, fighting some boss. After 20 or 30 tries, I realized that I wasn't making any progress. That the small wins I had were due more to random luck than developing any particular skill with the game. Maybe people are playing this thing with a mouse and keyboard adapter instead of the pro controller?

And, ugh... the lack of music. The lack of atmosphere! I really can't understand all the positive reviews.

This is the 2nd Metroid game I haven't finished in 25 years. You know what the "Other" one was.

They created a 3h main story, made it complicated with "difficult" fights ( EMMIs and more ), created a chaos in the maps with the power ups, made it hard to move from one place to the other on the same territory..... I played 10-11 hours and I felt I threw 8 of them. It was not a fun experience and I found myself feeling obliged to finish this just because I bought it. When I realized that I quitted it. Its beauty can't save the bad implementation.

And that is refreshing considering many modern Nintendo games shy away from challenging the playerbase.

My biggest gripe has to be the music as the OST seemed to be tacked on as an afterthought. Nothing came close to standing out like "Kraid's Lair" or "Brinstar Depths". The story was also told as an exposition dump towards the end of the game instead of slowly feeding it to you over time and I thought that could have been better handled. Without these features addressed, I cannot give Metroid: Dread a 10.

Besides some of the bumbling critics and players, who aren't very good at video games to begin with, everybody will find that every single section of the game flows smoothly back and forth between locations. The designers knew exactly where to put doors and blocks for you to find them after getting new power-ups without ever shoving them right in your face. I have limited experience with Metroid games, so it's not as if I knew what to look for already. It was so difficult to put the controller down as I kept wanting to get the next power-up, then beat the next boss, then find the next area, and repeat.

Credit isn't given enough to the enemy designs in this game and how well Mercury Steam and Nintendo did with them. Regular enemies, the E.M.M.I., the mini bosses, the bosses, and then on top of all that, they found a completely sensible way to make the easy enemies on past locations more difficult to face when you return later in the game. It impresses me to thing about how much perfect planning must have gone into this game to make it as fun as it is to run and gun, discover and adventure in Dread.

It sounds like I'm praising this as the perfect game right? So why a 9/10? Well, it's 2021 and video game writers should be putting a little more effort into making the story something we can connect with an understand. The story in Dread was interesting when mentioned, but rarely ever progressing. I suppose it's difficult in a 7-9 hour game to pack more than 30 minutes of story content into it, so I'm not even sure myself how this could've been improved.

Another thing to mention about 2021 is that the video game industry has made it acceptable to release broken and unfinished games and sell them at a $60 price point. Nintendo still has you to falter and accept this low standard, and it has to be commended how hard this game was worked on to make such a complicated formula accessible to everybody immediately at launch. One of the Switch's best library additions to date.

Samus moves faster than ever, with her new skills giving her much more mobility and efficiency in battle (no longer will you just shoot, jump, reposition: here, you dash, parry, slide, desperately fighting for survival against really tough opponents that make this one of the hardest metroids to date). Dread is overall much more combat oriented than its predecessors. And let's not forget the EMMIs, whose haunted rooms brilliantly balance the pacing by bringing in the suspense and tension needed to keep things interesting. Regrettably, the game will often block your path backwards to push you on, to keep that tight, fast pacing that really sets it apart from any other metroidvania, at the cost of losing the freedom to choose for yourself when to backtrack and get stronger and when to push onwards. It feels like there are only two or three moments when the game lets you off the hook and tells you to just explore on your own and relax a bit. But it works. You really want the next powerup because "if I go back now I won't be able to get that energy tank", and so you go straight into the mouth of the beast, the really fun and well designed bossfights that will put your skill to the test and make you feel awesome when you beat them.
However, this heavy focus on combat doesn't mean the game forgot its essence: exploration. Dread does a really good job at leading you on the right path while giving the illusion of freedom, allowing you to get lost only when it wants you to, and once you have enough powerups to see how far you've come, you'll be able to really mess around with the map, opening all kinds of shortcuts and alternate routes. Thanks to a well-thought out teleportation system (with each portal connecting two specific areas, opening up only much later in the game to lead you to any other portal on the map) you'll always find yourself with some new area to explore. The map is very detailed and will have all kind of information, from powerups, to what kind of door or obstacles you've seen, and even hints at where the next secret might be, plus a welcome addition of pin ups the player can use to mark areas of interest. However, it never tells you where to go to progress the story, respecting your intelligence as a player and its own level design. You'll still get hints from Adam, but only in the form of speech, without any stupid pointer leading you there unless you put one yourself.
Sadly, some paths will be one-way only, locking themselves after your passage and forcing you to circumnavigate them to go back, even in the endgame when you have all the upgrades and should be able to open whatever passage you please (although this doesn't happen as much as it did in Fusion). As for the potential to break the sequence, while that remains to be explored in depth by the community (which will no doubt find many exploits, such as getting the bombs before fighting Kraid, leading to a nice little reward from the devs), the game keeps the player on a leash. The wall jump will be of little use, and you get the morph ball and the bombs surprisingly late, meaning you won't be able to infinite bomb jump till about halfway through the game (and of course the same goes for the speed booster and shine-sparking). This means tricks like reverse boss order will probably be out of the question, which is the only factor holding the game back from being on the same level as Super and Zero Mission. However, it is still possible to get one or two small upgrades earlier than intended (I managed to get a power bomb expansion before getting the power bombs themselves). Still, the excellent pacing and atmosphere more than make up for it.
The backgrounds are incredibly detailed and often include some animations that will make the planet feel more alive than ever, thanks to an exceptional work from the artistic team.
The optional puzzles for some of the harder-to-get upgrades for 100% are very challenging and will put both your mind and your skills to the test, being pretty much as hard as the ones in Zero Mission. It's a little sad, however, that while you do get extra lore in the form of chozo archives for your item collection percentage, the only way to unlock different "endings" (not story endings, of course, just different postcards after the credits) is to speedrun the game. It would have been nice to still get a different Samus animation for 100% completion the way Fusion, Zero Mission and Samus Returns did. But really, any flaw is very minor compared to the excellent work that has been done: a Metroid game that, after so many years, can finally stand tall amongst its peers, from its legendary ancestor, Super Metroid, to other excellent contemporaries such as Hollow Knight. Here's hoping this is only the beginning of a new era for Metroid, and that MercurySteam and Nintendo will keep collaborating on many great games to come.

The new adquisitions, the slide and the flash shift, makes the game feels like a Megaman X in steroids. It justifies the fact that the boss battles are so challenguing and difficult, because of the variety of movement options, This difficulty in the boss battles would have been unfair in other Metroids due the movement limitations, so it is really fair to me ( I heard a lot of babies crying about it, GIT GUD).

    "Cons":
    - Music is not the most epic in a metroid game but it still really atmospheric and well placed
    - E.M.M.I battles could have been better, but still are really dramatic, and finding the proper place to shot them is really satisfying

I personally loved the story, and I think they took a real chance continuing from fusion, which was a risk in and of itself. I think the finale was one of the most epic things I've experienced in gaming in a long time, and I HOPE that Nintendo gives Mercury Steam the opportunity to continue this series.

Perhaps even the definitive metroidvania. Although you can play similar, longer games from the same genre for much cheaper, none have the vast level of polish found in this game. It's clear from the moment the title screen boots up that the game is a triple A title.

I'm glad this game wasn't released on the DS as the movement feels fluid and precise with the switch's additional controls. I would like an option to use the right stick to aim, but it never felt like it was the games fault when I missed a shot or failed a parry. (although parrying an E.M.M.I was a wonderful feeling) I will note the shinespark seems easier to use than the last entries, however that may just be because I'm more comfortable with it than when I first played zero mission and fusion. However the inclusion of the shine spark makes 100% less plausible to new players and it's never taught in game, which was what made Super Metroid's level design go down in gaming history.

The loading screens for fast traveling are a bit long and broke the flow of gameplay a little bit, however they aren't really noticeable until you go back to 100% the game.

The difficulty is reasonably high, challenging but not hard, so it's not a game you should pick up for small children, but that's part of why it has an age rating. Adam doesn't hold your hand like in fusion, however he does still give you direction. A nice blend and it's always nice to speak to him after beating a challenging boss or escaping an E.M.M.I room.

I also think it's quite linear. Not a necessarily bad thing, and I defiantly spent less time blasting walls wondering where to go than usual, but quite early on you run across a boss called Kraid and with the map so closed off early in the game, you don't have the option to backtrack to upgrade your health as you've probably picked up all the energy tanks you can on your way there. The difficulty of Kraid was defiantly higher than he should have been at that point in the game, however the other bosses felt well balanced and genuinely fun to fight.

The E.M.M.I rooms where a fantastic addition and where I died the most. They are a fun extension of the stealth that made my blood pump in fusion with the SA-X. It trully feels like the perfect next step. I do hope they can expand it again in the next game, however long that takes to make.

The story was exiting yet fairly simple and went a direction I didn't expect. It's not required to play any other games before this to understand the plot, but I'd recommend playing at least Fusion first as to avoid spoilers in case you want to go back and play that game. It doesn't spoil any of the other games much and never mentions the prime games, but Fusion has a heavy impact on the story of Dread. That being said, the old games aren't very accessible at the moment unless you have a Wii U or a GBA, so maybe hold out for a fusion remake or port.

I do however think that locking a collectable behind an amiibo pay wall is unfair. They did the same with Samus returns for 3DS and it meant that I could never truly complete the game.

Metroid has always had a rough time with sales, so I hope that this game will be the one that brings the franchise out from Nintendo's dusty "to do sometime" list and back to being the third pillar of Nintendo. The perfect blend of Mario's platforming and Zelda's story and openness.

    1) The game is just too expensive (IMO) It retails for 80 CAD (Canadian Dollars) (without the taxes included)
    2) The backtracking is tedious and totally not worth it
    3) The E.M.M.Is are just seriously lacking I was expecting to have them breath down your neck the whole game however that wasn't the case. They are stuck within their zones and after the first one (White/None Damaged One) you realize that they aren't scary just more of a nuisance
    4) The bosses fights are just a chore, they hit for a lot and barely take dmg
    5) The E.M.M.Is are pretty much all the same with barely any variety (They have slight quirks but not enough to make them memorable)
    6) Mini bosses like the Chozo Warriors are constantly reused and become boring and a pain to deal with.
    7) Out of the 7 E.M.M.Is you only really fight like 5 of them (The Damaged one is a tutorial of sort and the Red one just dies in a cutscene)

There is exactly 0% exploration. The game constantly forces you to go in one direction and then a wall breaks behind you or a door malfunctions. You are then trapped until you beat the next boss there is no back tracking to explore to get more gear or find more health. if you miss one then you missed it. good luck finding a way back to that health tank, when the game changes the layout on you and lets you do no exploring before forcing again to the next part. But that's only if you can kill the creature in your way. If you cant beat a boss then you are stuck until you can. there is no way to go back and look for more missiles or health.

Also the Bosses are usually located away from a save point, so if you decide you need a break and want to play something else, then you will lose you place in the game and be moved back to the last save point. No manual saves and no save points near irritatingly difficult bosses.

Many will say this game is perfect because they are afraid of getting called a newb. This game is a huge let down for old fans of the classic games. Hopefully Prime 4 isn't this awful of a game.

If i wanted to punish myself i would play through hollow knight again. I really wanted to love this game but every time I beat a boss there is no break in pacing to explore, you just have to go fight the next boss. **** DISAPPOINTING

I hope you like to do a minibos fight 5 times in a row because you **** up 2 quick time events back to back. NOW START ALL OVER!!! YAY SUCH FUN!!!!

This game is tough, but never once felt unbeatable to me. Even with my generally sub-par mechanics I was always able to slow down, retry the encounter, and find the pattern needed to win. Often I found that my faults were in impatience, that I acted too quickly rather than having been too slow. That patience and finding the rhythm to any boss fight is key for this kind of game, and that's a good thing. There are moments that will be tough, but there's always something you can learn to get through it.

This game mixed the eerie solitary feeling of older titles, Metroid Fusion's partly guided path and all around better story, and some modern flair to bring a new touch of action to the series without sacrificing what makes Metroid, Metroid. I particularly enjoyed the story, which I won't dive into so as to remain spoiler free. Overall Dread leaves some of the series most awesome moments and obviously the best graphics the series has seen.

It's not without flaws, the game is more linear than predecessors and didn't leave as much time as I'd like to explore for powerups, but I don't feel it significantly reduced my enjoyment in the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was Just playing Hollow Knight to warm up to metroidvanias again. It's still the goat

I came into Metroid Dread pretty negative because I saw the art style, and the rather bland trailers, and I was a bit worried. The E.M.M.I insta kill concept didn't instill fear into me like running from SA-X, one shot and you lose like 4 energy tanks, but still live, so you are forced to stay in the sprint.

But, the E.M.M.I grew on me in another way. Like gamer parkour really. I became less scared of death (because I would die like 3-6 times.) and became more interested with the vast use of abilities I could use to outsmart / outrun them. At first, very spooky, but then you realize you will just find baby mother brain, and mess their day up sooner than later. I did like the variance of abilities they possessed. The music was fantastic though, and helped with the tension

    Classic Metroid Tension: 5/10

This is a Metroidvania, so of course, I play for those collectibles baby! Plenty of missile tanks, some powerbombs, and a new to Metroid concept, large missile tanks and also energy tank pieces. I liked this concept, the more the merrier. I do wish Super missiles were a collectable. That was my main infatuation with Metroid Fusion, the loads of collectables, it was ridiculous how many energy tanks you could get. On another note, there was some amazing puzzles on acquiring some of the larger collectables. Primarily using your speed boost ability. The trickiest to master of them all. But very, very rewarding to finally get right. Was a huge fan of the creative puzzles to acquire collectables. Wish there were more though, and I sort of wish the area didn't glow when a collectable was nearby. I personally like it when you have to work for those hidden items on your own, and scan each room manually. I'll take it though

    Collectables: 8/10

Environment. This was my greatest fear. Getting a "Metroid" atmosphere with 3D art style. At first, it felt generic, and it still could be a lot better honestly. I wasn't really scared ever. And that's what I want in a Metroid game. Think of Metroid: Fusion in general, or the start screen of Super Metroid. Metroid Prime 2 anyone? All of these games had you teetering on the edge. A freakin' pixelated game is making me poop myself! I never quite got there with Metroid: Dread, and I thought I might with it being in the name. However, the E.M.M.I were a great attempt at that, but instant kills don't strike fear into you once it happens once or twice, it just becomes a standard case of trial and error.
The release of the X virus into the world, and seeing it all change to increase the difficulty of the other areas, and seeing changes in environments when the lava generators were turned off was fantastic! That was my favorite moment in the game; seeing the X virus at all was like: "dayum, its not extinct!!" Very cool moment. Some of the environments, especially the water ones were nice to look at, but many felt rather uninspired. Fire place, Water place, Grass place. Part of me appreciated this for Metroid Fusion nostalgic reasons, but Nintendo does this already for Mario games, we can do better there. The Chozo areas, much better

    Environment / Atmosphere: 7/10

Mechanics. At first, acquiring abilities felt like "ahh man, I've gotta remember another button" and I spent a lot of time shooting my grapple at enemies instead of missiles or shooting a missile instead of sliding in a panic, but over time, I grew to love the buttons and the feeling of being a Samus. A good Samus too. I also loved just about every mechanic in the game, and that there are ways to skip certain areas if possible because you have such a vast set of tools that not even the game testers couldn't figure it all out!

    Mechanics: 10/10

"This game is too hard, its only for hardcore metroid fans." - 0, 1 star reviews. The game is challenging, yes, you will die. but it rewards those who learn from your mistakes, get better, its not that bad

    Difficulty: 10/10

I beat and aced the game in 10 hours and 56 minutes. A 60 dollar game. I think that's a solid time to ace a game overall and most people won't do that on their first play through, but I paid 60 to do that. Guess how much I payed for Hollow Knight....15 bucks full price. I have 17 hours in the game, still haven't even beat the game, let alone end game content. Metroid Dread is a great gaming experience, but not a 60 dollar gaming experience. Nintendo do what Nintendo do tho.

    Bang for Buck(Price): 5/10

In closing, there were some frame drops for a game that looks like maybe it shouldn't have frame drops. Story was rushed in the beginning, but made more sense, and eventually hooked me later, but not like Metroid Prime games. The final encounter was awesome, and loads of challenging at first. Some micro areas were very tedious in making you run all the way around, even in end game spots. Map was sometimes overwhelming, but large too!

    Overall 8/10

My one complaint with them is that the map becomes a little too powerful in these sections. It pauses all the gameplay and allows you to plan out your next couple steps. I think the EMMIs were a little more fun before I realized that.

The combat is great, and most upgrades were useful in both combat and exploration. One particular upgrade was so powerful in combat that once I had it, I felt like I couldn’t go back. But it wasn’t overpowered, just strong. The boss fights acted as great checks for my combat skills, though some certain bosses were repeated a few more times than needed.

The exploration was also very enjoyable. That’s to be expected out of a metroidvania, but the secrets in this one were particularly good, sometimes being hidden behind optional puzzles, which are much more enjoyable than you’d expect from a game where there are no required puzzles.

All in all, there isn’t really much to dislike about Metroid dread, and any complaints were minor in comparison to the soaring heights of the rest of the game.

Scratches that metroid itch. Super tight controls and gameplay. Plot is good and the addition of voice acting is a welcome addition. Game is pretty challenging, but it's fair. Only complaint is that no matter how many health tanks I had, it still felt like it wasn't enough. Overall all, it is my favorite ge so far of 2021

Metroid Dread is a game I have personally been interested in ever since I learned about its (then debated) existence ten years ago. I have always been a Metroid fan ever since I was seven years old playing "Zero Mission" and "Fusion". I have always been a Metroid fan ever since I was seven years old playing "Zero Mission" and "Fusion". Those were the last two traditional games we would get for a very long time until 2017's "Samus Returns", and one of those two (Fusion) was the last original 2d game to release. Fast forward ten years from that point, and I find myself at age 17, final year of high school, and finally a new, shiny, original 2d Metroid game, and even though much time has passed since I first played "Fusion" and "Zero Mission", Dread threw me back into the shoes of seven-year old me. I was over the moon just hearing about a new game, let alone Dread, would release in 2021, and the excitement has only grown after my play-through of the game. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is refined and perfected, the level design is complex and intelligent. As an experienced Metroid player, I found myself amazed yet equally perplexed at the world around Samus as I tried to find my war around the rich caverns below ZDR's surface. The game is one of true open-ended fun, rarely holding your hand, and when it does, it is done so in such a subtle way I never even realized I was being guided. The bosses in the game can range from either complete pushovers in the beginning (except for some repeat bosses) to complete brick walls in which I found myself dying and repeating boss fights multiple times. The EMMI (killer robots) serve a satisfying purpose in keeping the player on their toes and DREADing (haha nailed that one) the next encounter the player may have with one of these EMMI. The story I will not go into, but seeing all the story-related events unfold sent so much joy into me and so many cheers out of my mouth. The story serves a great purpose but never gets in the way of progression or gameplay. Finally, the uprages the player can receive all have an important purpose and are used in very thought-out methods. One minor complaint I had was how some bosses were repetitive, but then I stopped to think why there were multiples of these bosses, and that's when things made sense. It's hard to make a review like this without spoiling major or even minor plot points of the story, so I will leave you with this: Be ready to retrace your steps MULTIPLE times, and be prepared to be surprised as well. In my opinion, Metroid Dread is the perfect Metroid game, the best game Nintendo has ever made, and, remember this just my opinion, the best game I have ever played. Metroid Dread was the long awaited and perfect follow up to Fusion as well as a fitting and wonderful conclusion to the Metroid Saga. Where will Samus go next and what else may step in her way? We don't know what the future holds, but for now, let us let out a sigh of relief in knowing that Metroid is back and better than ever. Metroid Dread gets a perfect 10/10 in my eyes.

This was my first Metroid and it's so good that it immediately made me want to play more. The tough but fair difficulty, awesome story, top-notch level design and progression, and some of the best boss battles I've ever played, these were some of the best 13 hours that I've spent on a video game. if you own a Switch, buy this. 10/10

I think this games deserves a 9/10 but due to review bombing from bad players i gave it a 10.

Difficulty is just right, games like this shouldn't be easy, a mistake must be fatal to make you feel the game atmosphere and samus weakness at the begining.

Improvements in añmost every aspect, good story and development, entertaining and feeling like a meteoid game.

Really loved this one! I'm a huge Metrovania fan, but Metroid always seemed to pass me by, it was always on a system that I didn't invest in that generation. It just feels so good to move around and shoot things. Everything is fluid and snappy. A pretty impressive statement when you stop to consider that I played the game on joycons. The visuals looked great, though I was lucky enough to play this title on the new OLED Switch. The game almost felt like it was specifically designed for the OLED. When I put the Switch in it's dock, the game looked a little weird on my 4k tv. One last note, I enjoyed the Emmi portion of the game, though challenging it was cool to see something fresh. I could be wrong, but I don't think anything has quite done the same thing in a metrovania. The Emmi portion did give me strong phantom Hourglass vibes. Expand

This game is the perfect culmination of the entire franchise. The story was incredibly hyped which is rare for Metroid and they nailed Samus' characterization perfectly.

The music, despite not being as catchy as the previous big hitters of the franchise, feels like a natural evolution of Fusion with a mix of the more grandiose flair of the Prime games. I just wish they included the option to lower the sfx and voices in the game to better listen to its soundtrack while playing. MercurySteam has really proven themselves after the great but flawed experiment with Samus Returns and I look forward to whatever they and Nintendo have in store for Metroid 6, hopefully in 3-4 years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to explain, but in my opinion, Metroid Dread is just pure fun. Fighting and figuring out bosses is fun, countering attacks is fun, even parts like backtracking to past areas is made fun the way Dread does it. In fact, there's a part where you backtrack to the first area of the game again, and you find it encased in ice. The first time I saw it, I didn't even realize it was the same area. Then it clicked and I began seeing some of the same parts from before, and it was so cool to see that.

Now, I'm not a big Metroid guy. I played and loved Zero Mission, have tried games like Prime and Samus Returns, and even suffered through some Other M. But I think this style of Metroid is my favorite so far. Controls are fun (although I've heard some people not like the inability to use the D-Pad, which I get, but the sticks make aiming a dream for me), the game is smooth as butter (except for some rare stutters during cutscenes), and the item collecting is to die for. When I was trudging through the water area, trying to find my way around while going so slow, it was kind of annoying. But when you get the Gravity Suit and you can freely move through water, it made everything click. Movement is so good in this game. Also, the counter was always kind of a weird introduction, but the way Dread makes it feel when you actually land the counter is such a good time.

The plot is nothing too Oscar-worthy, but it suffices for me. Honestly, I mainly play games for the gameplay, not to be bogged down too heavily by story, but I get if that isn't many others' cup of tea.

Bosses are extremely challenging and fun, but they have tricks that can be worked around. Like, the final boss has this technique where he essentially creates a sun, and the first time I saw that, I was really confused on how to deal with it. Shooting it did nothing, even with Ice Missiles, but then I thought about using my newly-acquired Power Bombs, and it worked. It was such an "a-ha!" moment, and it honestly reminded me greatly of my first time playing Breath of the Wild. The sense of dread (ha-ha) that the EMMIs put into you, at least earlier on, is terrifying. Admittedly, the EMMIs become kind of annoying later on, but it still makes it feel like a puzzle trying to find your way around them.

Honestly, the biggest gripe I had with the game, aside from the few things mentioned previously, are load times. Traveling from area to area takes a comparatively long time. When I first got to the second area, it took upwards of 20 seconds to get from area to area. 20 seconds isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, but you'll be going from area to area pretty often, especially if you want to collect all the items, which I didn't have the guts to do. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's inconvenient.

Other than that, this is such a great game. I get if others don't feel the same about this, but this game might be one of the series' 2D best. It may even rival games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, in my opinion. I will gladly be supporting this game for times to come.

Boring level design, ugly graphics, bland color scheme, subpar music, a focus on sneaking past unkillable enemies instead of exploration, and quick time events make Dread one of the worst entries in the franchise.

As an older gamer who originally fell in love with Metroid on the NES, SNES and GBA, I have to say I really didn't fall in love with Metroid Dread, and I had a really hard time pushing myself to finish it. I stopped playing around the second boss - I had enough.

I really didn't enjoy the survival/stealth sequences, or the difficulty and style of the bosses. They are very different from the past games, to where it doesn't feel like Metroid - it feels like the designers took elements from Cuphead, Dark Souls or Hallowknight and other modern indie metroidvanias and molded them into Dread.

I really didn't enjoy the melee counters either. In fact, I think the window of success for these counters was much shorter than Samus Returns - it felt like I had to press the counter sooner than before. It could be the latency on my TV - although it is in game mode - but I feel like these counter windows need to be a longer.

I'm not saying Metroid is a bad game - it's not. It's very high quality and is very polished. The frame rate is very good and the game looks nice. The character controls are excellent. Unfortunately, due to my vision and my age, I simply cannot meet the timing demands of various activities in this game very well. It's a little too fast and I wish I could slow it down somewhat. The older games were slower paced and I felt like they were fine, even today.

I also felt like the game had less emphasis on exploration, at least initially. The game really wants to press you forward, blocking off your ability to go back at various points very often. I can't say I liked this. I'd prefer a world I can freely explore at my own pace, and be able to backtrack more freely than what is on offer here. I'd also like to collect a lot more energy tanks and missiles to help with me bosses, but there weren't any I could find.

Again, I'm not saying the game is bad. I think the audience more used to modern metroidvanias by many indie studios will feel right at home with Metroid Dread. I just wish the game had more accessibility options for people like me, so I could tweak it to play more like the older games, which were less demanding and more accessible by design. I never played Metroid for difficult combat that expected perfection, and I don't understand why this is so present in Dread for.

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed in what I played. It's just not the Metroid I remember, and as someone who's 40 years old who is blind in 1 eye and 20/400 in the other eye, I just wasn't able to play it like the developers intended.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
