Game super fun when running around figuring out puzzles and what not. Reason why it’s not 10 is THE BOSSES HOLY CRAP!! It get good until bosses, then the game has a big spike in difficulty, especially the final boss. Also I think the damage is a little high on some enemy’s. Overall 9.2, would highly recommend.

The game is already fairly difficult to begin with, and hard mode takes it a little over the top for the average player. Having played every other game in the Metroid series, Metroid Dread was a must buy for me. Unfortunately having now completed the game, I was left somewhat disappointed for a number of key reasons.

    1. Difficulty

The game is noticeably harder than any other Metroid game I have played. I thought Prime 2 on hard mode was hard, but I honestly found Metroid Dread on normal mode harder. I think the reason for this difficulty is that fact that most bosses and enemies now seen to do considerably more damage per hit (usually over 100) which is not the case in previous titles. This is compensated for by the fact that bosses now have a checkpoint outside, but I still find it frustrating to die over and over again to beat one boss, even if this was the intention. Also, I really hate the melee countering, I'm not going to explain why, it just needs to go.

    2. Atmosphere

Metroid Dread does not have the same feeling of desolation that is characteristic of a Metroid game. The planet feels very mechanical and lacks many natural environments, and the natural areas in the game felt very generic and too similar visually to areas from Super Metroid or Zero Mission, most areas were also filled with enemies, which is fine in most cases, but I felt that certain areas could have done without to help build a stronger atmosphere, especially considering the game is called "Dread".

    3. Music

This is more a subjective point but I just do not like the music, it is rare for me to complete a game and not remember a single piece of music from it. Most of the music was lacking a consistent tune which makes it just sound like an incoherent jumble of sounds; the same is true for bosses as well unfortunately.

    4. Portrayal of Samus

I didn't feel that Samus was portrayed in a consistent way with previous games, she felt a lot colder and angrier in this game. In games like Metroid Fusion and to an extent Super Metroid with its intro, Samus occasionally gave short monologues stating her view on the current situation, this is something I think the story would have benefited from, as all we see of Samus in Dread is her killing things which, during some boss battles, make her actually appear somewhat sadistic.

All in all, while this review might seem rather negative, the game isn't all bad and did have some good moments, I also like the addition of new power ups to keep it fresh, however I just do not feel that the price justifies the game.

The bosses in this game are solid. Take for example the combat with Kraid, the combat is so smooth and joyful yet I barely noticed any frame drops during the combat. Each new boss takes a few attempts to understand the boss but once you get the hang of it, the intense fights are commendable. The boss fights aren't too long, they aren't repetitive (not the soldier bosses), the combat is smooth & intense, the bosses are also not too hard and not too easy. They did a great job striking such a good balance.

The game slowly opens up making Samus more powerful after each upgrade, unlocking new abilities that Samus didn't have before making the character more powerful and joyful to play. As the game opens up, the Samus's combat abilities increase which allows more ways to tackle a boss/explore.

The final few minutes of the game is so well implemented. I'm skipping this section to avoid spoiling the good content.

Overall, Metroid Dread is a very well implemented game. With intense combat, right balance for bosses difficulty, super smooth gameplay and fast combat, great bosses, intense E.M.M.I gameplay, great level designs make this game a masterpiece.

We are to mindlessly repeat deaths for progress based on pattern recognition as the game's core direction, however exploring, pondering, analyzing and discovering are mechanics that feel like they have been put aside. Maybe the map is just too small, and well too 2-dimensionsal. The weak sound track only diminishes the experience. You can only experience a game once for the first time. Nintendo was good at balancing that experience of discovery and progress, from finding that enemy weakness to stumbling on the game secrets in the older Metroid games. This one does not play like a Metroid game and this is possibly just a generational thing.

Only Retro Studios was able to create a Metroid sequel worthy of being called a Metroid game in my opinion. Nintendo has been for a while a dying company, particularly as a console game developer since the N64/Wii days. So they concede and let MercurySteam patch their holes and take the hate. Nintendo games are supposed to be fun. This was their only redeeming quality as a game developer. At least Nintendo was able to gamble on the future of their francize in the hands of people who brought us Turok. Instead they direct and create an archaic, frustrating, and arguably outdated game that feels mediocre today. This is a genuine cop out, a lack of vision. The Other M was more of a Metroid game... wow now that is just something I did not expect to ever state.

I don't want to play Ori or some other pain in the ass 2D platformer profiteering on nostalgia. I want to play Metroid, a Metroid true to what the technology can provide today. The spirit of Metroid was inherited in Prime, not Fusion. Nintendo, if you can't produce, just stop already.

I 100%'ed this but I don't think I'll play this again 10 years from now out of fondness nor nostalgia. I guess Metroid is just not for me anymore.

Prime 4 - I can't dislike this franchise and hope for the best.

Criticisms are mild: The game contains the "energy part" collectibles from Other M which while this method of gaining health may work in zelda, they feel incredibly out of place in a Metroid game. Speaking of collectibles, this game loves to dangle out of reach collectibles in your face at any opportunity it can, moreso than any other title in the series, which may be to encourage multiple visits to certain areas, but it's still a little jarring. Also without spoiling anything, the game almost feels like it has a case of Spiderman 3 syndrome with its antagonist. Too high difficulty, lack of choice of difficulty of the game, absolutely overloaded control - to perform any action in the game there are not enough fingers, the plot is "for show". After spending 14 hours completing the game of the last boss, I just looked on YouTube, because I'm not ready to spend so much nerves and break the console because of such garbage as metroid. complete failure. I do not recommend it! Expand

I wouldn't describe any component of this game as being above mediocre, and many of them (controls, plot, environment visual design) are extremely underwhelming. Game falls far short of the standard set 25 years ago but Super Metroid.

I love the parts of the game outside of EMMI encounters, really nailed Metroid with a Super Metroid feel.

Also the QTE **** from Chozo birds, get the **** out of here.

I'll check before I buy next time. If there's these elements in the game, hard pass. I'm supposed to be playing Samus Aran - a badass. Instead, I get to be Jill Sandwich in a Soulsborne game that nobody asked for. And much like a Soulsborne game, upgrades don't matter. Get all of the energy tanks, great you get to take 6 hits instead of 5. Big Whoop. And I didn't even hunt down missiles and I never ran out. Confirmation that it's not about exploration and upgrades and it's all Soulsborne.

And the exploration is cheapened. Immediately after you get a fancy new gadget to access things you just saw, the game is like no - that's walled off now by a new gadget and here's yet another EMMI that has even less of a time window to defeat and yet another QTE Chozo. The EMMIs get so ridiculous at the end that you have to grind through the same obstacle course for 1 minute and same 10 second load time and repeat only to fail and fail again. How the hell did this pass QA? What are these glowing reviews? Did you even finish the game? Take your ableist nonsense elsewhere.

Stunning presentation and superb controls. Sound design is second to none. My only gripe is the over reliance on the EMMI mechanic which can be a little repetitive. It would have been better with a single EMMI who stalks Samus throughout rather than EMMI "zones''. Also the kind of AI used in Alien Isolation would have been perfect here. Respecto a los bajones de FPS solo se notan en lugares en específico, como lo son elevadores o el transportador, no lastra para nada la experiencia, respecto a su jugabilidad y controles creo que tiene que ver muchisimo con el tipo de jugador que seas, en lo personal al principio me resultó incomodo pero con forme vas progresando en el juego se vuelve mas comodo y respecto a su historia no quisiera spoilear, asi que limitaré a decir que es decente con momentos muy buenos, sin duda no me arrepiento de comprar este juego.

Combat and mobility system are by far the best on the 2D saga, you'll just need a little bit of practice to adapt to them, but mastering Samus' abilities aren't that hard.
If I can find some sort of "excuses" to say it's imperfect, the only two things I'd say are soundtrack (fitting, but a little generic for such saga and music legacy) and linearity from beggining to end (that's debatable, since between beggining and end you have to get back almost always to %100 it)

Anyway, giving a 10 for those funny kids making review bombing, so I suggest to give back more 10s :D

The E.M.M.I were my biggest worry but they ended up being a lovely addition that provided much needed fearful and tense situations. They also don’t overstay their welcome and are used in new ways each time you encounter them. My only issue is that towards the end of the game it becomes a little more Metroid Fusion-esque and often bottlenecks you into where you need to go instead of discovering stuff organically but this is a minor blemish on an otherwise incredible game. They should be skippable but are not and just become more and more frustrating as the game progresses.

The SA-X that they obviously were inspired by was scary and much more sparsely inserted in the game. The EMMI seem friendly with their Portal 2-look and feel.

The next major drawback is the controls. There are just too many buttons and too many combinations to remember. It’s unintuitive and clunky.

I think the game is a little too hand-holdy in its design, but it is by and large the old Metroid formula that provides a few hours of fun, minus the EMMI-parts. I had no problem with the trial-and-error difficulty. Graphics are not that good, but the Switch is getting old and really underspecced now.

Get out. What you want is not important. This game will not accommodate you. If you want to succeed it will take hard work and rote memorization. Buttons must be pressed precisely. Bosses must be defeated precisely and repeatedly. Things must be done in the proper order. Rules must be followed. Violators will be executed. Any exploration or deviation will not be tolerated. There is only punishment--only pain.

The brutal design constantly forces you to play the game the way THEY intended it to be played. What you want to do is not important. If you think because you managed to defeat a difficult boss after hours of practice you deserve to be rewarded with a bit of free time to explore and enjoy your new weapon. Think again. The door has been locked behind you. Now have ANOTHER boss, and maybe ANOTHER stealth section where any slip-up, no matter how small, means instant death and repetition. There is no varied pacing in this game. Only brutal challenge after brutal challenge.

Even if you do manage, for just a moment, to break free from the harsh and rigid DESIGN, what do you expect to find? If you're expecting to find interesting rewards behind that wall, (as you would in any modern indie Metroidvania) YOU. WILL. NOT. You will only find missile upgrades and energy tanks. Nothing else exists in this hellscape. And trust me these same boring relics of the NES era, will be useless to you here anyway. Bosses will utterly destroy you if you haven't memorized the patterns and practiced them to complete perfection, no matter how many you find. A couple more missiles or one extra hit will make no difference.

The controls are great, though! Thanks, but I hate it.

The graphics are gorgeous and it's unbelievable that this is running on a Nintendo Switch. The game reinvents the genre that Metroid originally created and elevates it to an unbelievably high standard. I was also pleasantly surprised that this game is moving forward and doesn't overuse nostalgia like Disney's new Star Wars movies. By keeping nostalgic moments rare, they actually have a very big impact when they happen in the story. Especially when the Theme of Samus Aran kicks in.
I recommend everybody to play Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Samus Returns, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread in this order. You're in for a ride! I also want to ask Nintendo to make the previous games available on the Nintendo Switch for new fans who don't own a Wii U or 3DS.

This game gets a lot right but ultimately can’t decide what it should be and tries to do everything at once. The overall arc remains the same as Super Metroid, but so much is thrown at the wall: the new EMMI sections are repetitive and gimmicky like the Batmobile in Arkham Knight, the parry-based combat tries to ape Dark Souls but slows the exploration to a crawl, and the map is so complex and bitty that power-ups unlock inches rather than miles. It’s not a bad game and there are some great moments, especially some of the bosses. But finicky controls and quick-time parries make this a frustrating, flawed experience. Expand

Overall, I enjoyed the game, but by the end it was a little repetitive, and most importantly, the whole time I was playing, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing a 15-year-old game, not a new full-price AAA game. Even indie games are beyond that now. 7/10

It's a really great game. Storywise it isn't groundbreaking, but it's not bad either. Gameplay is really fluid and fun. It is by far a better looking switch game and the series needs more love.

Game run smooth and playing cool as hell. This is like my memories about old-schoool metroids at ENS and SNES. Map is very handy, some enemies triky but at my current ingame position nothing impossible. EMMI not so hard as i think at start (at least at my position) but it's ok for me. I dont like this type of enemies. But! Ability to kill these folks is amazing!

Phenomenal gameplay - the smoothest gaming experience I've had since Hades. Everything just works so effortlessly. It looks stellar, the map is incredible, the weapons and power-ups are a joy to behold, the enemies and bosses are fun to fight. I only deduct a point for what I personally think is a very run of the mill type of story, and the music, which is average at best. Metroid dread is the cumulation of what metroid should be. It captured the identity of the franchise and pushed it further and better.

This is literally the best Metroid I've played. It doesn't hold your hand. It makes you wonder consistently, "Hey maybe I need to shoot everything in this room" and rewards you for it. Using Samus's abilities make movement really snappy and fun to use. Finding secret blocks is a fun mechanic that really nails exploration. Especially, when you randomly shoot walls and BAM you just got another upgrade, you smart boy!

Fighting bosses can be TOUGH but with enough determination you can learn their attacks and kick some butt. EMMI encounters make you feel the 'dread'. Running away from them is scary and when you finally hide from one, the few moments as the EMMI seeks you out are truly heart-pounding. That feeling of suspense makes those enemies truly terrifying.

This game gives you rewards for the risk that you put into it, gameplay-wise. It lets you know you can move in it's linear path but let's you explore in between set pieces to find out each map's secrets.

It's the best Metroid-like game out there. Thank goodness it's actually Metroid.

*I recommend playing this game with a good sound system at home or with headphones. This game's atmosphere is heightened by the SFX and music. Gameplay also benefits from sound as well since environments and enemies give queues through SFX as well.*

It is 2d metroid game which will be a very fun and amazing game. I want to give it 8, but since i played all the past metroid games and my best 2d metroid was metroid prime, i feel something off with this game + emmi was not fun at all. But its a good experience after all. If it is the first 2d metroid you play i recommend playing the older ones.

The flow of movement. The Sequence Breaking, and just being able to have fun with the Shine Spark.

I find the melee counter a vast improvement over Samus Returns because this time not every enemy can be countered. your abilities n can handle a greater range of foes earlier on so that stopping/waiting/countering is by no means the most efficient tactic for everything like the previous title. Heck for a number of the enemies they took out the waiting part and that was a hug plus in and of itself.

Bosses felt like they had a fair learning curve, seeming difficult at first but every boss is animated so that each attack has a distinctive tell that lets you know where and when to move, attack, or counter. The only thing I,'d want to add to this game is a Prime Style logbook to give you more concrete lore on the world but that's just me and has no bearing on the gameplay.

I was afraid this game would fail because of the mixed opinions of Samus Returns and the clear reuse of mechanics and assets but this title FAR exceeded my expectations.

It has tight and responsive controls.

The sound design is also REALLY good. I advice you to use either headphones or surround sound system when playing. OST isn't as memorable as in other games in the series but it still reinforces the atmosphere.

Overall I the game was just joy to play from start to finish. I don't have that much time for gaming these days so I'll usually complete a game once and then move to the next game. But this time around second playthrough may be needed. Dread is so freaking good!

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
