Rather than exploring an world that gradually opens up, you're ferreted down a set of corridors where the set dressing could pretty much be swapped out for another. There's no world building, no environmental storytelling. I think part of what made Super Metroid, SotN, Hollow Knight, and even Dark Souls so appealing was that they presented a cohesive and interconnected world. That feeling is lost as you're through teleporters to completely unrelated areas. So far, it feels like Metroid:Dread is to Super Metroid what Final Fantasy XIII was to Final Fantasy VI.

The new gimmick added to the game is a set of enemies which are all carbon copies of each other which can instakill you and most of the time are unkillable. This tries to be suspenseful as you run around the portion of the map that they're in -- hence the "Dread" subtitle. They even rumble the joycons like a heartbeat to let you know that you're *supposed* to be scared. But this ends up being tedious, annoying, and boring more than anything else. So it seems like it tried and failed at being a survival horror as well.

Lastly, the load times. The game has them. For a 2.5D platformer. In the year 2021.

All in all, if you remove the Nintendo and Metroid branding you end up with a harmless but forgettable title that would have sold on steam for $15-$20 but few people would pick up unless it as on sale for $10 or less. Certainly not with the money.

I totally get those that say this game is a 10. I say it's close but no so fast my friend! There are sections of this game that force you to play only one way. The final boss, I can make it pretty far in the fight but can't kill him. There's a difference between tough and totally insane. I know plenty of people can get 100%. Some of the missles and what not are impossible for me. And that leads me to my final point: I am old and you need crab/lobster like hands to be able to "get good" at this game. I have carpal tunnel now thanks to this game. Did the developers try playing this game in handheld mode? My joycons are not the best. Expand

an excellent experience in my opinion, samus's mobility is very agile, the difficulty is one that all video games should have, the graphics and cinematics are works of art, and it performs like a good metroid vania

The world design is a little bland with samey metallic hallways in the early game, but the polish given makes it one of the best looking Switch games out there, putting it on par with something like Xenoblade 2. It delivers a lot. Sci-fi, adventure, action, and with the E.M.M.I robots adds an element of horror. So if your a Nintendo fan that want's more Metroid, buy the game, and you'll get more of it.

Graphics and Story are amazing the appeal of this game is absolutely marvellous. The motions and attacks are all fluid. Arguably the best controls in an action game for the switch. The only downside is the length of the game which lasts 12-15 hours.

Simply yes, very much so. Metroid Dread brings the classic Metroidvania gameplay, (which has recently become even more popular with games such as Hollow Knight and Ori) and takes it to a whole new level with amazing never before seen gameplay features. Samus begins finding herself in the multi-level planet ZDR with the goal of escaping back to her ship. After being attacked, she wakes up without any of her abilities other then a basic blaster and missiles. Then you begin, the game throws you right into the excitement immediately. The first few hours of the game can feel a little bit too linear, but as you progress and get more abilities the world starts to open up and make you feel like you can go almost anywhere. Of course, classic abilities like the morph ball and bombs make a return, but brand new are the Aeon abilities which allow all new gameplay options never before seen in the series. The Aeon abilities use the Aeon gage which is always on screen and is a bar that when is full allows you to use your abilities. This bar system keeps them from being too powerful. All of the abilities and movement options are seamless to control and feel great to pull off. The moment to moment gameplay will have you exploring the various areas, and destroying enemies. Learning enemy patterns and how to counter them is key to taking them down fast. The vast areas might make you feel lost and not know where to go, but the map system helps you figure out where you are, and places you haven’t yet been, which helps you seek out places to go. There are two major parts of the gameplay that bring Metroid Dread to the next level, and those are the boss fights and E.M.M.I. zones. The E.M.M.I. zones are by far the most unique and interesting part of the game. Basically a massive part of the map (which you’ll know you’re in because of the E.M.M.I. doors) where a robotic creature named, the E.M.M.I. lives with one goal, destroy samus. If the E.M.M.I. catches up to you, YOU WILL DIE, you have 2 very small windows to counter but they are insanely hard to pull off so don’t rely on it. The E.M.M.I. zones really add a nice change of pace from the rest of the game that is heavily appreciated. Now the most challenging part of Metroid Dread: the boss battles. Some of the most challenging boss fights I’ve ever done in a Nintendo game are these… so hard but very fair at the same time. You get a savepoint right before each boss battle so you can keep trying as much as you’d like. This means that you get multiple attempts to learn the bosses attack patterns until you master it and can do the battle in one run. This simple feature can keep the fights fun, yet insanely challenging. To finish off, the games presentation. The backgrounds of each room really helps immerse you in the experience and its really wonderful to see so much detail in every part of the map the visuals are just absolutely stunning. The game has a few instances where it seamlessly transitions between gameplay and cutscene, sadly the cutscenes run in 30fps while the rest of the game is 60fps. Its not a big deal, but it is very noticeable. One of the biggest weaknesses is the music, none of it is bad, but theres also no standout hits which is disappointing considering how good some of the past metroid games soundtracks are. But the music doesn’t take away from the experience. In conclusion, Metroid Dread brings a satisfying gameplay loop, challenging bosses, and beautiful art direction, I’m excited to see the future of the series! Expand

Metroid Dread was a torrential monsoon that came out of left field during a time of drought in the Metroid community. Metroid Dread was a torrential monsoon that came out of left field during a time of drought in the Metroid community. Samus Returns on 3DS was a decent addition, albeit a remake of an older title, but Dread was a game that surpassed expectations of a Fusion remake and instead delivered one of the most solid, fluid, and rewarding Metroid games to exist.

Taking a page out of Samus Returns' book in control and gameplay, Dread perfected the free moving reticle its 3DS processor introduced. It drops you into a new world to explore with some of the most nefarious lore in a Nintendo game, even for Metroid standards. The dark, foreboding atmosphere is back and the navigation once again is top notch! I'm always impressed on how well designed Metroid maps are and how much forethought went into them to prevent you from getting soft locked. The attention to detail is very praise worthy.

While slightly more difficult than most 2D Metroids, Dread feels completely fair, if not very testing of how well you're able to utilize all the skills you've acquired throughout the game. A lot of the enemies are tough, but unlike other games (*cough*Souls*cough*), you feel like all of your deaths were from mistakes you made that can easily be corrected rather than feeling like you got B.S.ed out of a fair fight. The victories are rewarding, motivating you to continue playing with new abilities to make your exploration more fun; you'll want to keep playing despite its difficulty, especially towards new players to the Metroid series. I would not recommend this be the first 2D Metroid game people play, as I feel like saving this game for last in your Metroid journey will help you appreciate the evolution the series has gone through and see how the controls have evolved.

Story-wise, there's so much shown here to connects so many events together from previous games. It may not be the most seamless and flawless story and at times feels like a couple of things have been retconned, but that doesn't take away from the subtle story telling hints you find along the way and uncovering the behind-the-scenes lore that fans have only theorized about previously. It's not perfect, but it fills a gap and it's a satisfying story that unmasks possibly my new favorite villain in the Metroid universe!

This is a definite must-own game for the Switch! It's a game that not only the series needed, but the console needed as well. While fans were rain dancing for updates about Metroid Prime 4, they were delivered with one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made, let alone on the Switch! The pride and passion put into the game is commendable and makes me confident to know that the Metroid franchise is in good, loving hands.

It's such a fun game, the combant is fluent, is extremely fun to experiment with your attacks, the devs thought about the possibility of getting the "flash shift" and "bomb" items before a boss you have to fight in order to progress because if you get these items (wich you aren't supposed to get before this boss) you can use them to fight this boss, you can even find a certain platform that allows you to use the bombs against this boss.
The story isn't very special, but it's interesting enough to get you engaged, and as I said, the gameplay is the main reason this game is so fun and the map design is beautiful and filled with attention to details most people wouldn't even see and it makes you use logic to get certain items.
You start with nothing and you end up slowly becoming an invincible killing machine, the game is quite hard but never to the degree it feels impossible, making the challenge extremly fun and rewarding.

    My only few complains are:
    1) Sometimes is not obvious where you have to go and the game doesn't help you, it's so easy to get lost I had to look at a playthrough a couple times, it's kind of annoying until you get a certain item further in the game that helps aliviate this problem

    2) Most bosses are extremly fun, but the minibosses are kind of repetitive and do almost the same things, especially the little BRAIN bosses, those where very uninspired and repetitive they're the only bosses I didn't liked

    3) Just like a lot of switch games, I've experienced a few FPS drops, in my fisrt playthrough I didn't have as many (Mainly in loading screens but I don't count them because at that poin I ain't playing, im just waiting for the game to load), but in the second playthrough I did encounter more, is not extremly annoying but it's a valid criticism to keep in mind.

    4) The lenght, this game is relatively short if you know where to go, you can realisticaly finish it in 4 hours if you don't die a single time and know where to go, but thankfully this game has replay value by unlocking new dificulties and unlocking a gallery of photos that you earn depending on how long it took you to finish the game and how many items you collected and they're adding new free content wich is nice (Easier mode, 1 hit kill mode and soon a boss rush mode)

    5) This game, just like every AAA game, is $60, I feel for what it offers is quite high, thankfully I bought a phisical copy that was discounted. I would reccomend you to wait for a discount but if you really want it and wanna spend full price feel free to do so.

IN CONCLUSION: Amazing game, good story, amazing progress feeling, amazing and fun gameplay. It has it's flaws like repetitiveness, easy to get lost, a few tiny FPS issues and a high price. But those bad things didn't ruined the experience for me, I enjoyed a lot and now im a Metroid fan

Along with the storytelling, the game's ending feels extremely rushed in every aspect. The bosses, except for one, are all too simple, unfortunately. The developers were unable to give them a difficult game design other than by making them spam dozens of projectiles for the most part. You truly feel like an explorer when moving through the world of ZDR. Lush environments and strange creatures are abundant, making traveling through the mostly abandoned planet a surprisingly immersive experience for a 2D game. The story is lacking, but considering I'm missing most of the story from the other games I went in expecting that. The EMMI sections are the highlight, providing intense subsections to the game where you oftentimes feel completely powerless, no matter how much you prepare yourself. If anything I was a bit disappointed that the EMMIs weren't further developed, as some are pretty similar to one another. There's an issue of getting stuck in the game though. Had to get outside help when I got trapped between the 1st and 2nd area. The solution was destroying several hidden tiles, but there was another set of tiles nearby that seemed like the obvious solution that the game was directing me toward so I never noticed the hidden ones. This is pretty dumb design IMO, but it was really the only instance of this happening. Overall, I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Metroidvanias, or for anyone looking for a challenge. I hope this isn't the last 2D Metroid game we will see on the switch.

The game is about 10 hours long, so keep that in mind when purchasing

As someone who's never really been into the metroidvannia genre, this game certainley changed that for me, all the boss fights felt very fun. My main problem with any metroidvannia is the aspect where you're left clueless on how to get the next item to progress. I didn't feel that nearly as much with Dread, I'm very excited to play more of the Metroid series.

Metroid does not know how to make video games. It takes forever to load and when it does the gameplay is straight out of the Gameboy colour. 60$ for a 2D game is a SCAM! The only 2D game that should be $60 is Monkey Kong.

As a fan of Samus Returns on the 3DS, I can say that Mercury Steam really gets what Metroid is and the franchise is in great hands with them. We'll get a sequel much sooner this time, no doubt. You owe it to yourself to play Metroid Dread if you're into the recent metroidvania games like Hollow Knight. Gamers have been praising this franchise for 30 years for a reason. It's all about fast gameplay, atmosphere, hidden items, amazing boss fights.

About the navigation, you have to know how to read the map. Whenever you get a new power-up, you have to look where you can use it. If you don't know where to go next, a little backtracking will send you in the right direction. You have to learn how to follow the breadcrumbs. Not a deal breaker.

Bring us a sequel, Mercury Steam!!!

Only flaw I find with it is that the only way to usually go is forward. There were moments in which I was very happy to get a power up because I could access an area I remember not being able to, but then realize I can’t go back there yet because it is now blocked off. Apart from that, I believe this to be the best game I’ve played of the last 5 years and I hope Nintendo keeps supporting this franchise. Expand

The intro makes NO SENSE AT ALL. So, Samus basically gets word that the x-parasites (from fusion) are on a new planet she probably never heard of and found on complete accident. There are also some robots that they’re using to kill the x-parasites? Couldn’t the maker of the Robots just notify Samus that they’ve got the situation under control? The robots stop working ( because the game would’ve been over before it began if that wasn’t the case), so Samus ( with a hideous close up on her face to boot) beams down to the planet And encounters this Bird who drains all her power and turns her armor blue? WHAT!?

The Combat in this is so boring and simple it’s not even funny. The way you kill every single enemy in this is to shoot them with your laser, that’s it. There’s this punch you can do to randomly instakill an enemy, which is actually a bit cool. Maybe there should’ve been some enemies that can only be damaged by that. But nope! Every enemy in this game can be considered palette swaps since they all die the same way.

The only reason this is not a 0 is because the EMMI chases are actually quite fun. They’re big mazes that you have to get out of to defeat the EMMI, but you have to make sure the EMMI doesn’t catch you and trigger the game over screen. It’s a blast of adrenaline and challenge to an otherwise easy and boring game. If there was a game based entirely off this alone, I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10.

But alas, the game itself is just tedious and I cannot imagine shelling out 60 bucks for this. Nintendo should fire mercury steam for ruining the Metroid IP. “Metroid Dread”? More like, “Metroid, I Dread what your next installment is if this is the direction you’re going”!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't remember the last time I played a game with such a ridiculously complex and unintuitive controls. I'm spending the majority of the time trying to remember which button combination I need to press, rather than enjoying the game world. it's incredibly furstrating, a mess of cussing and frayed temper. not satisfying at all. the level design is bad. the entire map is a mess, with not much in the way of recognisable areas that would be familiar when you look at the map. you spend most of the time lost, with arbitrary roadblocks shoved in your way for no discernible reason. the suit design is nonsense, with 'lights' behaving like painted lines and meandering all over her body without rhyme or reason. puzzle design is inconsistent. for example, the game tells you specifically that your scan ability will show you blocks that you can break with your abilities, HOWEVER there is a wall that can be destroyed by power bombs that is not marked in any way. just one example. the narrative is disjointed and nonsensical. there is ample opportunity for various concepts and character history to be dripfed to us so we are reminded of context of the situation, instead it feels like the end is one massive context dump and shock reveal all in one. the game just expects you to accept all this stuff seemingly out of the blue.
lastly, when did they decide to blow up a planet, and how exactly did they physically do that?

also, whoever came up with the idea of QTE as a major required game mechanic, fire them. that trash gimmick does not belong in a metroid style game.

Just finished this game and wanted to write a review. The final result left me feeling happy and satisfied. I didn't find the difficulty too hard, just right, and the final boss fight was one of the best fights ive ever had in a game. The sense of progression truly makes you feel like a god at the end.

So why only an 8? Well, there are problems. Tons of people seem to love the game, so im aiming this one at the negatives mostly.

Emmis.... Dear god what a... DREADFUL idea. Get it?.... Ehm... Anyways, yeah, not the most exciting concept. They basically block you from exploring and are presented as unkillable gods who one shot you. The AI seems to know where you are even when it shouldn't, and the Emmis just roam around only the area you are in. End result is it feels cheap, it feels annoying, I guess I did feel Dread anytime I would enter an Emmi room, but im not sure its the kind that actually adds anything to the game. Mostly hated them.

Exploration. Well, thats what Metroid is about yeah? Well, I guess not, kind of.... For a good long while you dont actually get to explore much at all, like half the game actually. It felt like I was being forced into specific directions then blocked from exploring, much like the Emmis did. This game seems real set on ensuring you are cut off as often as possible. It does open up later, it does actually get really good, but getting there took some time and it was hard to keep interest.

UI/Completion - This kind of follows up naturally to exploration. Its why you explore, the items! and well, some sense of achievement. However navigating through the maps was sometimes completely unfun. You would see a place close by, however, because of "interesting" design, a door would just be locked. Yep, locked, no way to open it, Sealed shut. You would then have to go through the awful map, zoom in, and try to figure out another way, which many times ended up being a case of going ALL THE WAY AROUND THE MAP. Please, god, dont ever do this again. If you have paths, just let them be paths. Dont artificially railroad me and make collecting more frustrating then fun. Beyond that, it was just really hard trying to figure out wtf I was looking at on the map. Items weren't always on blinking spots on the map, the game doesn't tell you this, so you would collect 80% of a map items and see nothing at all. You would then have to go through every inch of the map trying to find the one item you are missing and its just not obvious. I should at least KNOW what im missing from items ive already seen. Make it more obvious, I could barely tell what I had already collected vs what I needed to collect. Just not good.

Information - This is a big one. Whats the most important thing in any game? Understanding how your pieces work, how the game works. Theres no way to play Chess unless you understand the pieces of Chess. This information shouldn't be hidden from you. So then WHY THE HELL DOES THE SHINESPARK HAVE BARELY ANY INFO COVERING IT?!!? How do you not relay information on this? Theres puzzles in this game I unfortunately had to look up how to beat on Youtube, and oh, I saw what was wrong. The game expects me to have expert knowledge of a concept that it hasn't bothered telling me almost anything about (The game briefly tells you to hold down after running, theres multiple mechanics outside of this it just never bothers to tell you). This is a major flop and its a requirement to 100% the game. I will say however once I understood the concept, it was quite fun doing the puzzles. I just shouldn't have to go watch Youtube videos to understand how my character functions.

Outside of those issues, which are big, the game somehow manages to pull an 8 out of me. I was very, very frustrated at many instances, I had no motivation to finish this after playing about 4-5 hours. It starts slow and feels linear, but man it picks up. The most important thing is how it feels when you finish, and for me, the finish was pretty much a 10, the other aspects were just so awful I cant give the score that 10.

Gameplay wise, I got just under 15 hours out of it. I spent probably 2-3 hours of that with it paused, not sure if that counts towards it, but either way 12-15 hours seems good to me. I 100% explored everything and theres a Hard Mode if I want to collect more art. If I wanted I could probably beat it again in half the time, thats about 20 hours of gametime. Now if only I can convince myself to want to go through Emmis sequences again...Yikes.

While the world design might not be as elaborate or double-backing as some of the games which have been inspired by the Metroid franchise itself, Dread is still impeccably designed and well-paced with some of the best combat to ever grace a 2D side-scroller.

Fantastic! If you played to older games in the series or not - this is what it is about! The game tickles your skills, while always being fair, because you keep getting better and better and it feels so good. To me the best ‚platformer‘ with the most diverse gameplay I have ever played. And it looks fantastic too! Genius game. Thank you Nintendo!

The game does a great job with guiding you through the map without being too linear. Backtracking always felt natural. This in direct contrast with Hollow Knight which I felt was too long and too open, often times traversing the map or figuring out where you should be started to feel like a chore in the late-game. Dread was just about the perfect length and did not overstay its welcome.

    The bad:
There are pacing issues. The game starts off slow, which isn't unusual for the genre, but the time between unlocking new abilities was really long for quite a while and then all of a sudden when the game opens up they start getting fed to you at an overwhelming rate. There were also quite a few mini-boss enemies that were re-used way more often than they should have been. Soundtrack is too safe, and leaves a little to be desired. The Emmi sections can be hit or miss. Most of the time, I enjoyed them, but there were 2 that I did not.

Last note I didn't pay $60 for this game, maybe if I did, I would have been more critical with my review, but oh well.

Incredible game! I loved just about everything about it. It's very action-packed, the environments are rich and feel truly like another world. Games that are too easy or you rarely ever die might as well be a movie. I love a challenge.

My only complaints that keep it from being a 10 are:
    - The controls for the shinespark ability are very fidgety, and simply don't respond sometimes, even if you do them as directed
    - Tutorials teaching you how to use new abilities disappear right after you learn the ability and can't be dug up later if you need a reminder (or if you can, I couldn't find it)
    - Reskinned enemies and repeat bosses (or same but multiple this time) take the thrill out of it a few times. It's not terrible in that regard, a minor nuisance, but it caused me to growl a few times.
    - I guess the heavily text-based intro is a throwback to the side-scroller Metroids this one is based on, but it's the 2020s and let's be honest, a well-made cutscene would've been nicer than paragraphs of exposition and backstory.

If you're like me, there's already a constant low level dread in metroidvanias as far not wanting to go the wrong direction first. The EMMIs only compound that.
It really just nails the metroidvania formula and has that familiarity of the similar powerups to Super Metroid. Plus the game looks phenomenal. The controls are super tight - except the aforementioned space jump, but thats tradition at this point. It can get VERY difficult at points, but I really felt that I was able to get better each time I died and replayed the same boss. It felt very satisfying to finally defeat it, and didn't feel cheap or overly frustrating. Also I never looked at a gamefaq until I finished the game. That's rare as even the best games have that one spot where you feel stuck.

I will try to keep it brief but also include some game analysis stuff in here. I've played all the 2D Metroid games except for 2. And I can confidently say that this is easily my favourite Metroid game and also among my favourite games of all time.

The difficulty is my favourite part of this game as it's so refreshing to play something that really tests your skills. The past Metroid games weren't that difficult as I never even died in Super and Zero Mission. Fusion was actually slightly hard but I managed. With this game though? I died to Kraid a lot until I got better. And that's the best part, you die until you get better at playing the game and better understand the attack patterns. It was a triumph when I got past a boss. In an era where games are so easy, this game is really refreshing.

The environments are really great in this game. I found that the graphics and how it's 3D add so much to the atmosphere you feel when going through the map. Burenia and Ghavron were magical when I stepped foot into them. I think this game also does an incredible job of subtly telling the story throughout the game by utilizing the 3D backgrounds. There were a lot of mysterious things and objects you could find when looking into the backgrounds. I would expect this game to pull it off better than the past games as the past games have pretty basic backgrounds. Also, this game uses original locations where as Super and Zero mission kept using Brinstar and other various locations like that. And one last point, Burenia gave me a very "liminal" feeling which was incredible as Super gave that same feeling when I went through the wrecked ship.

The singlehandedly best part about this game is the scope they reached. The past Metroid games feel a lot more basic compared to this entry as the rooms were smaller, and the boss fights weren't nearly as involved. This game really captures the adventure aspect the best out of the series by simply offering way more depth to the maps and abilities.

This game is a masterpiece through and through, and despite other metroidvanias existing, I think this game offers a grander experience compared to other games in the genre. It really earned its best adventure award at TGA.

The story is also deceptively endearing. Simple and only a few lines of dialogue are uttered in the whole 10 hour runtime, but it does enough to make you sympathise with this gaming icon in a way other games have tried and failed to.

My only real criticism is the lack of memorable songs in the soundtrack; but that is very unfair considering the backlog of this franchise and how legendarily diverse it's music has been. Not to say there aren't any good music tracks, most of it is serviceable to good, just nothing as impactful as Prime or Super.

story: Metroid Dread retells the story of the 2D Metroid games leading up to it, ending with Metroid Fusion. Now, Samus is dispatched to investigate by a currently unknown party and travels to ZDR. As the only being in the universe with immunity against the X Parasites, Samus seeks to uncover whether they truly still exist

    pros:

    - the game is one of the prettiest games you can play on the switch its really smooth and barely had any hiccups in the graphic department

    - the map is super understandable and very detailed really made my life so much easier

    - the sound design is superb

    - Samus'es movements and weapons although clunky at times are really cool and after getting used to it i really loved it

    - the bosses in this game are the biggest stars beautifully designed and every fight had meaning and difficulty plus final boss is super hard in the good way

    - the game is good in the sense of completing the story that fans waited for at least 20 years if I'm not mistaken

    cons:

    - the game is super short for a metroidvania idk if its just me but in my opinion if a metroidvania isn't at least 15 hours its not worth full price

    - which leads me to the price of the game yes its a good game and all but 60 bucks for this ? really Nintendo ? that's a no go they should've took an example from kena bridge of spirits if the game isn't long don't put a high price on it !!!

    - the "dread" part of the game which are the immortal robots that chase after you is not scary and not "dread" worthy. annoying at best because if the killer robot catches you , you have a small escape window and you do it 7 times with 7 different E.M.M.I. as they call them i swear every time i stumbled upon one of the those robots all i had in mind was oh s@%t here we go again

    - after i finished the game i had this off feeling as if i didn't do much in my opinion metroidvanias today accomplished way to much and set the bar way to high even for the genre creator

in conclusion the game is super fun and i do recommend it but only for a lower price i cant possibly recommend a 10 hour game at best for 60 bucks its beautiful cool and i really liked it at the end but i hope that in the next Metroid they'll go bigger and better because as i said the bar for metroidvanias is way to high these days which brings me to my final score an 8 out of 10

Absolutely loved this game. Atmosphere, movement, combat were just about everything I had hoped for in a modern Metroid game, especially after Samus returns on the 3ds. I'll admit there were several places/puzzles I got stuck on, but I still enjoyed my time roaming around. When you are familiar with the subversive hidden blocks from previous games they almost become obvious in this game. And to be fair, the designers explicitly tell you to bomb and shoot everything when you're stuck, often incentivizing you with pickups just on the other side of a wall. The smooth movement and teleportation rooms really speed up the navigation, so I really don't understand why 'backtracking' is such a dirty word in this context. It should be a joy to go back through a previous world so powered up and smash through it.

Do I with some of the textures were higher resolution? Sure. But would I prefer that over 60fps or fast load times? Absolutely not. There is so much going on with the backgrounds, lighting, and particle effects it's still a gorgeous game.

Not much of the music is memorable outside of the game, like you're not going to be humming it all day. But it fits the areas and their mood perfectly, and songs great on the tv or handheld. Songs effects are awesome, though the new item pickup jingle is a bit... 70s synth? Idk...

Samus is a badass again, I'll take it.
