An excellent game! I absolutely loved it, a worthwhile successor to the original Metroid games. The graphics are smooth and great looking, combining the 2D style with modern technology. The controls are fantastic and improve on the original, combined with an interesting story.
Only downside is that it's a pretty short game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an absolutely phenomenal game! This is now my favorite Metroid game. this is one of the best 2d games ever in my opinion. Some bosses are harder than order ones after you beat the game you unlock a hard mode which is even more challenging. Only the Chozo soldiers get a little repetitive after a while. Expand

Dread is essentially the most well rounded metroid game, as each of its predecessors have definitely iterated on the metroid formula, but not in all areas. Super metroid is often seen as the best metroid game, and its sequel fusion added more story, but less exploration. Zero mission struck a nice blend between the two but had many minor issues, partly due to it being a remake of the first metroid. Overall, it seems dread has done a zero mission, where it takes the best ideas from super, fusion and samus returns and compiles them into the ultimate package. It has the exploration of super, the storytelling of fusion and the improved combat action mechanics of samus returns. It then goes even further, choosing to spice exploration up with emmi sections that create super buttclenching encounters, improve story telling by using less dialogue and more facial expressions from samus (which definitely worked out better than something like other m), and the new combat speed and moves like the slide and flash shift make dread a fast paced thrill ride. This is amazing as the fast paced combat never interferes with the slow paced exploration. This beautiful combination makes dread stand high next to its predecessors, and even higher on the switches library, making it my favourite metroid game and one of the best switch games, right up with botw and Mario odyssey.
Notice i am writing this review a while after the games release, as to get a proper opinion of it (many negative reviews were written 1-2 days after, which is just a bad joke) .
The difficulty of dread has been a point of contention for many, but i never saw it as a problem once. The game is inherently skill based, and steadily teaches the player its combat mechanics. Aswell as this, respawning after a boss puts you at the boss door to avoid breaking the games pacing, and if you are entirely stuck, as a metroidvania dread allows the player to slow down, backtrack, explore and find more powerups to help them in battle. If you are stuck or having a hard time in dread, it is simply t the player who is at fault, as dread gives the player every opportunity to succeed. I can see why others may have an issue with learning boss counter timings, however this is a live and learn experience, dying in dread is like I said, not the end of the world.
In general, dread has to be the best game of 2021, with huge story moments, intense and heart pumping boss fights, and tranquil moments of exploration, with soothing ambient music tracks to enable your explorative mind. The games great, and I cant fault it, buy it.

The whole point of the game is to have fun suviving not wasting 30 minutes so filled with rage you want to shatter your switch, cry, and scream so loud your vocal cords snap and you choke on your own blood and die. Other than that it's a fantastic game. Love the boss fights, it's like learning a new dance as you glide past all their attacks. The robot partner voice was an annoying choice. The fact that you have to go through 98% of the game to unlock all of your abilities is a poor choice. I'd rather have had at least half the game with all her abilities to freely explore everything and test out her true potential, maybe even get creative in how i beat each boss instead of just having to make do with what i got, and immediately hitting a dead end again and again when trying to explore and collect. How are you supposed to enjoy Samus' powers if you dont get everything until the last boss? Everything up to that point wasn't the abilities carrying you. It was your skill to outmaneuver your enemies. Which yes i do enjoy that but why not both? Parrying be kinda dumb at times. I see the flash, i hit parry, they don't actually attack until after she's already attempted to parry and you can't spam it. Samus wont stay in her ball when you fall, but like you REALLLY need her to stay in morph ball form to get off a cross bomb the moment you roll off a ledge. This made it so much more difficult than it had to be. The shinespark is entirely too short. Like 8 seconds would have been solid. Speed boost conditions are wayyy too specific. Like the conditions have to be exactly right. One change and its ruined. But yeah. Great story. Fun time when I'm not having to spend 40 minutes honing my skills just to get +2 rockets or 1/4 of a health bar. The space jump is also busted. At times it works perfectly, other times she just refuses to do it and dies as a result. I understand there's a rhythm to it but like I'll do the rhythm and it refuses to work. I dont even see why they felt like it was necessary to restrict the ability to the rhythm. Like it could be rhythmic or not as long as we can get by easier who cares the choice should be there to do either. If you are willing to put on these metaphorical handcuffs and restraints on abilities then you'll enjoy yourself. Expand

Excellent controls, blissfully fluid and satisfying movement, challenging but fair combat, fun puzzle mechanics, wonderfully satisfying upgrades and devilishly clever level design. This game got me to go back and play all the other Metroids, and this led to me finally playing what is now one of my favorites of all time, Metroid Prime 1. My two cents on the difficulty: It is unbelievably refreshing to have a challenging, first-party Nintendo game and I don’t think the game would work the same without its level of challenge. I mean, the game is called “Dread”; you’re supposed to feel powerless. But having said that, you aren’t *actually* powerless. All boss attacks have clear tells and it feels so good to learn the patterns and mop the floor with them after learning. Checkpoints for bosses and enemy encounters are extremely generous, so it just feels like each death is another learning experience, and it feels SO incredibly rewarding to progress through this game as a result of the challenge. I think the difficulty level is perfect, and that’s coming from someone who’s never played more than an hour of a Metroid game before, and doesn’t have the design language or mechanical staples in their head. I really hope some of the game journalist reviews calling the game too hard don’t sway Nintendo for the next one. The fans love it! Expand

Press 2 buttons and you fire missiles. Press another 2 buttons and you launch a grappling hook. Press another 2 buttons and you turn into a ball and drop a bomb. It gets confusing.

The EMMI robot sections are awful. Like the worst stealth sections you've ever encountered x6. There are some great boss fights in Metroid: Dread that are dances of death like Hollow Knight, but then there are a lot of gimmicky boss fights that depend on using a grappling hook to hop around, or hit some weak spot. Overall, this game is still a lot of fun, and a fine addition to the Metroid series.

The only unique new thing that is supposed to be the "dread" part is the kind of stealth and escape part when fighting against the emmi bots, for me it was kind of boring, you retry the emmi parts generally 1-10 times to find the correct path and then it's done, but I'm not a horror fan so I probably just miss that point; for the comparison I do find the bots in breath of the wild more menacing. The music and sounds are great. The controls are perfect, perhaps a bit tricky with triggers at times but in general if you make mistake it's on you and not bad controls. The boss fights are challenging but all have recognisable patterns to learn so it really is all about learning the boss patterns, rather than having lightning reflexes and good luck, which is one of the main point that sets it apart from poorly designed indie metroidvanias. That being said, the best part of the game is definitely exploring the world and discovering items and finding shortcuts and all that. They definitely have the metroidvania formula down, so that was pretty fun. The EMMI robots that stalk you around the planet were definitely scary, but i wish the stakes were a bit higher with them. When you get killed by one of the EMMIs, it’s kinda stressful n scary but the player isn’t really punished that much for dying. Art direction was good; storyline wasn’t all that deep but i mean it’s not really a story driven game so who cares.

A great game overall, with a few minor blemishes along the way.

First, this game 's combat is essentially a sequel to Samus Returns on the 3DS. It is 2D, and the melee counter makes a return. This is not in the vein of Metroid Prime. Story wise, this is a sequel to Metroid Fusion and has a lot of callbacks to that game. If you are nostalgic for that game, this game will give you the tinglies. Definitely a bit of fan service here (which is a good thing.)

The game is relatively linear; even though you can explore, there is usually only one "correct" path at a time, and if you listen, the game will tell you. Some might be turned off by the lack of hand-holding though. Gameplay goes like: Find new power, go back to wherever that power was needed, rinse repeat. A satisfying loop. This game isn't super long either, I beat my first playthrough in about 6 hours. However, these games are EXTREMELY replayable, so that should add some value for the price tag. It's about quality and not excess quantity here; it isn't bloated like other metroidvanias in the genre.

The stealth sections are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they are fun and interesting at first. On the other, they become a bit tedious and not fun, especially the later ones. They aren't particularly "dread" inducing as you the game implies; the EMMI aren't scary and since respawns were so close I'd legit just let them kill me sometimes so I could reset the room. Thankfully, the game ended right as these wore out their welcome.

Overall, amazing game and a return to form utilizing the Switch hardware. This style of Metroid game is usually on a handheld so it looks and sounds a lot better here.

Asits not as if Metroid is out of ideas, its just getting very good at reincorporating the same old ones to suit a narrative that is frankly just getting more embarrassing as time goes by and each subsequent post-Other-M title comes out. Is Samus just a legacy character now? Was their really enough there after all these years to continue writing a plot for her in these action games? As convoluted as most, if not all of them are, I'd dare say it may be time to let this character retire. Gone are the days of merry, even carefree adventuring with occasional puzzle elements like the Metroid Prime games, instead we get an actual action game based more off the weird pseudo-remake of Metroid 2 from the original Gameboy.

The Gameboy, in all its black and white glory was incredibly limited, but at the time they made do with what they had. It turns out, some of the simplest elements from the Metroid II - Return of Samus original stick out in my mind a whole lot more than the things they added to elongate a rather short affair in the remake on the Nintendo DS. Color is always a good addition, but some of the other things are kind of irritating. Manually aiming is cool, but finicky and the original control scheme going back to the Gameboy Advance series was intuitive enough. Desiring more complexity for no reason isn't exactly the best goal for a Metroid title when so much that works for the series is KISS. Keep it simple, stupid.

Metroid Dread, sounding more like a black metal band than a proper sequel to any Metroid game in general, is one of the more bizarre and genuinely bland experiences I've had with the series. From the opening cutscene I think something got lost in translation, because nobody has been playing the Metroid Fusion timeline nor was anyone particularly attached to that timeline either. In short, the intro is terrible and makes the Galaxy that Samus roams rather small and inconsequential. Everything is Chozo now. Everything is connected to metroid or metroid DNA or metroid this and metroid that. Its silly, its been done to death. Its just recycling older and better ideas to cram into your tired narrative, as mentioned above.

The game play is tedious. I have no other real word for it. I suppose if you were really hoping that Samus Aran would become Megaman overnight, then I guess you got your wish, but I don't like Megaman games. I kind of enjoyed that Super Metroid game on the Super Nintendo. Having all of these new features slapped onto Mrs. Metroid's move-set is exhausting. Mostly due to the fact that the analog stick is required for everything now, which is so foreign of a concept to me in a Metroid game that I just still can't understand why its so necessary. The parrying is silly, the power ups all end up being the same or with a slight twist, but they are only exclusive to this one game, and will I'm sure strangely disappear when the next sequel comes out.

Lets talk about the bots. No, I don't mean the bots on metacritic, I mean the robot adversaries in this game that are copy-pasted with all of your abilities that all have to be beaten the exact same way, and all feature the same gameplay loop up until the end of the game. The EMMI or EMMI'S, are the same robot thing that pursue Samus in order to give you a big hug and then want to either inject you with something or steal your virginity. Its tough to tell because the screen fades to black. You can QTE them away, but the timing window to stop them and escape is rather short. These are flat out the most boring element about this game. its actually kind of sad that this was the best they could come up with while recycling boss encounters from even older games for no real reason.

As far as I'm concerned, this game ends on the most ridiculous premise ever. Samus is now some sort of Jesus figure with the blood of the metroids or something blah, blah, blah. Its garbage. This series is over. What else can you even do now besides remake the older games?

    - no more bs hidden passages like in the old games where you need to bomb every nook and cranny. They finally got the scan right

    - visuals look great

    - manual aiming is a great addition

    - new power ups are a great addition. And new environment interactions.

    - parry system is amazing. Rewards players who have good reflexes. Parrying an attack feels satisfying.

    - crouching slide is really fun to use. Having samus automatically turn into morph ball when climbing into vents is really convenient.

    - Turning into morph ball with one button is convenient as well.

    - Space jump is finally not too annoying to use.

    - a good variety of enemies, and most have unique attacks.

    Bad

    - I wish there were more cutscenes where Samus would react more, or show more emotion, or possibly say something. Or even take off her helmet for a bit, just some kind of interaction aside from fighting or listening to someone.

Metroid Dread was my first Metroid game, and without a doubt it has peaked my interest in the Metroid series. This game is fun, thrilling and action packed. However, this game is extremely hard, and I **** love it. Every death never felt like the games fault, and that’s extremely important. And with all that said I’m off to play the rest of the Metroid games

This is among the best Metroid games. The game uses clever tricks to reduce your risk of getting lost, without hindering your exploration, Samus moves quickly and all of her moves are easier to pull off. The quality of life changes are contrasted with difficult boss fights, gorgeous environments, and a better story than you normally get with aetroid game. Aust play for fans of Metroidvanias

Everything feels very true to the series, including the difficulty. I found myself dying a lot, but I never got frustrated because I enjoyed the sense of progression as you figure out the patterns of the enemies and bosses. The gameplay and controls are super tight and well designed and everything looks and feels silky smooth. The controls feel particularly tight once you unlock all of the abilities, you really feel in control over Samus in the environment. However, the game did take a hit in the atmosphere. While the graphics are decent, the setting does not do the game any favors because most of it is that industrial setting that does not vary that much throughout the game. The music also adds to the inability to differentiate between areas of the game, as it is incredibly forgettable. But the part of the game that really annoyed me the most were the EMMI sequences. They are so bad, they really feel like they are 50% luck based on where the EMMI spawns, and the fact that they are so frequent really interrupts from the sense of exploration that Metroid games are always about. Metroid games usually have great atmosphere, whether it is created by the music or subtle design in the levels, this game unfortunately lacks that atmosphere that really pulls you in, and replaces them with pretty frustrating EMMI sections. All in all, its a fantastic game and a very exciting release for fans of the old 2D Metroid games, but it does fall short in several areas which takes away from the elements that makes the series great. I was very much into the first half of the game, but the second half really lost my interesting because of the boring atmosphere and the repetitive bosses, the only thing that really kept me entertained was the extremely precise controls. It’s a great game, but it was lacking in many ways. Expand

The bosses are always challenging, and a little unfair at times, but that always makes then satisfying to beat (when they don't throw repeat boss encounters at you). The enemy design is fresh, the story is a fascinating continuation of Fusion's themes and the pace almost never slows down in the wrong places. Seems like a 10/10, right? Well, note how I said 'almost' in terms of pacing. Yeah, the game slows down its brisk pace in the middle after a very important plot development. It does pick the ball back up again after another plot development. I also kind of wish the E.M.M.I. were used more effectively. I mean, their a great addition to the game, and Dead would definitely be lesser without them, but after the first playthrough, they lose their 'dread', and while you can still get tense scenarios, its a shame that the E.M.M.I. don't adapt all that well to your steadily increasing movement capabilities. Also the music is mostly forgettable, although I do like how little of it remixes past themes. But this is definitely my favourite Switch game since 2018. Expand

I want to first start of by saying that this is my very first Metroid game that I have completed and have wanted to complete. I played Super Metroid, but I never felt like actually wanting to beat the game and was super unfocused, so I never beat that game. Now with that out of the way, I want to say that this game is absolutely amazing! Seeing this game be revealed, I knew I wanted it. II want to first start of by saying that this is my very first Metroid game that I have completed and have wanted to complete. I played Super Metroid, but I never felt like actually wanting to beat the game and was super unfocused, so I never beat that game. Now with that out of the way, I want to say that this game is absolutely amazing! Seeing this game be revealed, I knew I wanted it. I was not a Metroid fan before I played the game, but now I feel like I should try to beat every game! It's an absolutely revolutionary title, having gameplay and level design similar to that of older Metroid games (so I have been told by my friends) while also adding in exciting new things to the table.

First and foremost, the feel of the game is amazing! I cannot stress this enough! Every button feels perfectly mapped, Samus feels amazing to control, and the ease of using all her gadgets feels extremely natural! For those who may have heard a certain game developer say that the game must be played on a Pro Controller, please note that this is not the case and that I played both on gripped Joycons and handheld and the game works best on both. Gameplay consists of jumping and shooting projectiles and enemies while also trying to navigate on where you need to go. Although this can sound boring, it is indeed not, and the feeling of shooting every enemy in sight and focusing on your surroundings to navigate the world is exciting, and this is exactly what kept me hooked to the end.

Graphically, this game is without a doubt the best looking game on the Switch. I have played this game both on my 4K TV and on handheld (on a launch day Nintendo Switch with 720p display), and they both look absolutely amazing. It's extremely polished, with some boss fights showing some of the best graphics in the game. These moments sometimes look like they rival graphics of games on PS4 Pro or even some PS5 games (although, this one is much more of a stretch).

The story is very interesting, to say the least. This is my first Metroid game, but I did see a recap video which helped me catch up. For those who want to experience the complete story before playing this game, please note that this is the fifth game in the main timeline and that there are 7 other games that you should play if you really want to experience the complete story (I will link an image to the timeline at the bottom of this review). There are not many story cutscenes in the game, and yet the story is as engaging and action-packed as I anticipated.

Finally, I want to say that this game is insanely difficult. I will not get into the details of what makes this game hard, but it is definitely the type of game that requires prior Metroidvania experience if you want to beat it with no sweat. That is the same type of experience that I didn't have, and yet I beat it. It took me a long 13 hours (as stated by my game file), but it was all worth it. The hard difficulty of the game is pretty basic for how most hard modes are (the usual take more damage, cause more damage), and yet it still felt a lot different from the normal difficulty. I constantly found myself being more careful around enemies when in hard mode.

Overall, this game is one of the best games on the Switch, and one of the best games I have ever played. This is a crowning achievement of how a modern 2D platform-shooter should be made and how a game should be made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILERS!!!:

Wow. I’m so shocked & happy this game finally came out. I remember hearing of it years ago after it was teased & eventually canceled, only to be revived after Samus Returns was remade. As a lifelong Metroid fan, this game’s existence was enough to make my inner child explode out as I watched the E3 reveal (one of the only good things from this year’s god awful show). So how is the game? Well if you’ve been on the internet in the last few weeks you know this game is excellent, and it definitely is!! I’m so happy it lived up to the enormous expectations and is doing so well critically & commercially, the series has long deserved this spotlight. I’ve seen a lot of fans throw “best 2D Metroid” around though and I can’t say I really agree there.. I think it’s mostly from the excitement of a new 2D Metroid being released but I think Super Metroid is still objectively the best one. There are flaws here that I wish I could overlook, I think the biggest sin this game commits is that the Soundtrack isn’t really memorable.. Which pains my heart because Metroid soundtracks almost always slap. Not a single track besides the title screen theme caught my attention while playing unfortunately. Also, this game can be brutally hard at times. I’m well seasoned in these games but I got my ass handed to me MANY times, mostly by bosses. I have no issue with learning patterns and overcoming adversity after a few deaths, there’s a whole genre called Souls for that feeling lol. But hitting a brick wall over and over really isn’t my thing. I would go as far to say Dread is around as hard as Fusion (Admittedly I played Fusion when I was a pre-teen so my gaming skills weren’t as they are today, most say it’s among the harder Metroid games to this day though). Yes I felt satisfied after each tough enemy/boss encounter was done for, but some really pushed my patience to the limit, ESPECIALLY the final boss. I LOVE how Kraid came back (I’m pretty sure he’s canonically dead but I really don’t care). Speaking of canonically dead, I’m so bummed that Ridley never showed up! I don’t care what explanation needs to be given! This was the last Metroid game of Samus’ story (for now) he should’ve at least TRIED to show his dead ass! I love Ridley sorry. Anyway, Dread’s big gimmick are the EMMI robot stealth sections, which are exactly what I expected them to be. I’d say around half of them aren’t that tough to bypass and eventually defeat, but the last couple are a pain to deal with at times, especially the Purple one. The fact that it can track you from anywhere was a difficulty spike I wish was more smoothly implemented. It’s basically a mad sprint for the exit, which locks when this thing WILL see you and stun you. Overall though, I thought I would despise the EMMI sections pre-release just because of the trial & error design of their sections, but I really enjoyed the amount of anxiety they gave me! And I’ve never said that for ANYTHING! They were thrilling! I even had my partner feel my chest for my pounding heartbeat right after one of them chased me down after a couple of times of successfully pulling off a difficult counter to avoid death. Difficulty spikes aside, (nothing new for Metroid), this is a fantastic game. I also appreciate the slightly more story we got with this entry. I’m in the minority on this, but I’d always love if Metroid went for a more cinematic approach, I know it goes completely against a lot of what the series is, but as sparse as they are I can’t held but nerdgasm at some of these late game exposition dumps! My jaw dropped at some parts! Yes I’m also a Other M apologist so don’t hate me. If Metroid is one day able to balance bombastic story with bombastic gameplay without pissing the fans off like Other M did, I think that’s a net positive! Dread also easily plays & controls the best out of any game in the series since the Prime series imo. Samus is so much fun to maneuver and engage in combat with. Once you get good you will ZOOM around the map & it never got old for me. I’ve played so many of these games that I felt right at home as soon as Samus woke up from her little nap after getting rekt by the main antagonist, Raven Beak, who has VERY interesting ties to Samus’ past. Overall this game feels like a full circle for the series, despite a few flaws; Bland soundtrack & massive difficulty spikes that made my hands cramp up, I still walked away with a big smile on my face. Metroid is BACK!! Now please don’t take another 20 years to make another, we can’t live forever yet, Nintendo.

Very hard but very fun also. 60fps are fabulous and kill the boss is a real pleasure and every time you learn something.

I lost in it sometimes and the game crashed after the last boss so the 10 score is vanished :)

The pacing here is really good, just when you think it will become repetitive after the fourth E.M.M.I-encounter the game changes it's focus and you get more time to explore the world without pressure.

The Story it'self is really good and for those who played Metroid Fusion, like me, it is intresting to follow. However I write at the beginning, that this is a challengeing game and the reasons be the E.M.M.I's of course, but especially the bosses are really hard this time. The first boss, Corpius, has three battles phases and all bosses punish you in an oldschool way, if you are inattentive.

And here is the step were the game become a bit unfair. I hate how some bosses only can be finished by the melee counter. Especally the last one. After four intensive phases you battle throug the last hit MUST be done with the melee counter. If you failed in this crucial moment, you have to damage him again to trigger the sequence for a second time. That's awful and is the only big complain I have about the game.

The visuals are gorgeous, everything feels organic and alive but most importantly, the design is so unique that you really get this feeling to be on an alien planet.

All in all, this game is a great addition to the Metroid Series and every fan should try it out. For my taste the bosses are a bit to hard and the E.M.M.Is are too much trial and error. The presentation and the story on the other hand are the biggest strenghts of this game.

Pretty darn cool, it's a great return to the Metroid main series and does just about everything you would want out of it. Very polished and looks great, with silky smooth gameplay. Biggest graphical issue is the cutscenes having half the framerate of the actual game, but that's just a nitpick.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

The world is complex, well design, love the backgrounds and environments, music and cutscenes, the final boss really is the Cherry on top!! 10/10 for Metroidvannia fans!

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
