Action-packed gameplay, astounding visuals, fun mechanics, hard bosses, big areas and a cool interesting story make this game an instant favorite in Metroidvanias. Metroid Dread is fun to control and explore from beginning to end, it is a solid Metroid game that was worth the wait.

Phenomenal Metroid game. Very few flaws. High difficulty, but fair. Tight controls. Good music. Epic engaging boss battles. Great visuals and atmosphere. This is why the genre is called METROIDvania. Better than Super Metroid? It's a tough call, but I'm leaning towards yes. Yes, really.

The first trailer of this game made me play trough the entire 2D Metroid timeline, and I could't be happier about it! Incredible entry in an incredible series! It is a close second to Zero Mission for me, tied with Fusion.

It's nice to see the franchise being inspired by other Metroidvania. Also, the EMMI bring a whole new element of fear and vulnerability, just like the SA-X in Metrood Fusion.

Unfortunately, Metroid dread was a bit too short. Itll take you 8 to 10 hours on average. But thats not the main problem. The problem is that theres very little replay value. The only reward you get for finishing the game quicker is some artwork, even on Hard thats all you get. Even in the old games you could unlock different suits. A new game+ wouldve helped. Once you're done with the game, theres very little reason to go back. I also wished that the game wasnt as linear but that's understandable given the focus on the story.

One of the best games I have played on the Switch. My introduction to the Metroid series and I am a huge fan now. The game is beautiful and movement and combat fluid.
The game is difficult but does not pretend like it isn't. From the get go, the game let's you know that it is trying to earn the "Dread" subtitle. It's not for everyone, but it is definitely for me.

Compared to previous Metroid games, this one picks up the pace. A lot. Samus moves faster than ever, with her new skills giving her much more mobility and efficiency in battle (no longer will you just shoot, jump, reposition: here, you dash, parry, slide, desperately fighting for survival against really tough opponents that make this one of the hardest metroids to date). Samus moves faster than ever, with her new skills giving her much more mobility and efficiency in battle (no longer will you just shoot, jump, reposition: here, you dash, parry, slide, desperately fighting for survival against really tough opponents that make this one of the hardest metroids to date). Dread is overall much more combat oriented than its predecessors. And let's not forget the EMMIs, whose haunted rooms brilliantly balance the pacing by bringing in the suspense and tension needed to keep things interesting. Regrettably, the game will often block your path backwards to push you on, to keep that tight, fast pacing that really sets it apart from any other metroidvania, at the cost of losing the freedom to choose for yourself when to backtrack and get stronger and when to push onwards. It feels like there are only two or three moments when the game lets you off the hook and tells you to just explore on your own and relax a bit. But it works. You really want the next powerup because "if I go back now I won't be able to get that energy tank", and so you go straight into the mouth of the beast, the really fun and well designed bossfights that will put your skill to the test and make you feel awesome when you beat them.
However, this heavy focus on combat doesn't mean the game forgot its essence: exploration. Dread does a really good job at leading you on the right path while giving the illusion of freedom, allowing you to get lost only when it wants you to, and once you have enough powerups to see how far you've come, you'll be able to really mess around with the map, opening all kinds of shortcuts and alternate routes. Thanks to a well-thought out teleportation system (with each portal connecting two specific areas, opening up only much later in the game to lead you to any other portal on the map) you'll always find yourself with some new area to explore. The map is very detailed and will have all kind of information, from powerups, to what kind of door or obstacles you've seen, and even hints at where the next secret might be, plus a welcome addition of pin ups the player can use to mark areas of interest. However, it never tells you where to go to progress the story, respecting your intelligence as a player and its own level design. You'll still get hints from Adam, but only in the form of speech, without any stupid pointer leading you there unless you put one yourself.
Sadly, some paths will be one-way only, locking themselves after your passage and forcing you to circumnavigate them to go back, even in the endgame when you have all the upgrades and should be able to open whatever passage you please (although this doesn't happen as much as it did in Fusion). As for the potential to break the sequence, while that remains to be explored in depth by the community (which will no doubt find many exploits, such as getting the bombs before fighting Kraid, leading to a nice little reward from the devs), the game keeps the player on a leash. The wall jump will be of little use, and you get the morph ball and the bombs surprisingly late, meaning you won't be able to infinite bomb jump till about halfway through the game (and of course the same goes for the speed booster and shine-sparking). This means tricks like reverse boss order will probably be out of the question, which is the only factor holding the game back from being on the same level as Super and Zero Mission. However, it is still possible to get one or two small upgrades earlier than intended (I managed to get a power bomb expansion before getting the power bombs themselves). Still, the excellent pacing and atmosphere more than make up for it.
The backgrounds are incredibly detailed and often include some animations that will make the planet feel more alive than ever, thanks to an exceptional work from the artistic team.
The optional puzzles for some of the harder-to-get upgrades for 100% are very challenging and will put both your mind and your skills to the test, being pretty much as hard as the ones in Zero Mission. It's a little sad, however, that while you do get extra lore in the form of chozo archives for your item collection percentage, the only way to unlock different "endings" (not story endings, of course, just different postcards after the credits) is to speedrun the game. It would have been nice to still get a different Samus animation for 100% completion the way Fusion, Zero Mission and Samus Returns did. But really, any flaw is very minor compared to the excellent work that has been done: a Metroid game that, after so many years, can finally stand tall amongst its peers, from its legendary ancestor, Super Metroid, to other excellent contemporaries such as Hollow Knight. Here's hoping this is only the beginning of a new era for Metroid, and that MercurySteam and Nintendo will keep collaborating on many great games to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
The gameplay is nearly flawless. This is the smoothest moving Metroidvania I've ever played, and that included being better than Ori and the Will of the Whisps. Samus moves effortlessly as she runs, guns, flips, counters, grabs edges, and tucks into her morph ball. The difficulty is excellent; I died plenty of times against EMMIs and bosses, but I always had the right mix of frustration and determination within me to try again and again until I persevered. The weapon unlocks are well-paced through the game. I normally hate being stuck in water levels when moving like a slug, but this game managed to balance it out well enough so that getting the Gravity Suit felt like an excellent award without making me feel annoyed beforehand.
The one flaw I see in the gameplay is that ending certain boss battles requires you to successfully counter the enemy. I rarely failed the boss-counters, and I enjoyed the flashy cinematic sequence that took place, but I could see it being extremely annoying to be at low health and then needing to counter a boss to win; just let the player bombard the enemy a bit more if needed rather than requiring a counter.
Samus is portrayed to perfection in this game. Like when she lands in Kraid's pit, she has her cannon raised. When Kraid steps into the light, she lowers her guard; she's fought this fatso twice in her life already, and her body language in this scene does so well to portray her thoughts, like, "Oh. . . its Kraid. This guy again. . ." And then she blasts him in the mouth with a charge shot. Later on, when you fight an experiment creature that clogs up the heating systems, there is an ending cutscene where the creature is falling off the edge and into the lava, and Samus is marching forward while bombarding it with merciless cannon fire. There are cutscenes in the game where you see Samus's eyes, and they express moments like anger, determination, fear, and curiosity. One cutscene has her speak the Chozo tongue, showing her stoicism and confidence that she can save the day, even with the odds stacked against her. In the end, she completely unleashes her rage on the final foe for an epic DOOM SLAYER kind of moment.
Exploration is challenging and simple. The map does an excellent job of telling you which areas are available for you based on the abilities you've obtained, and using custom markers helps you pinpoint where you want to go. The game rarely tells you WHERE to go, but it does a good job telling you where you CAN go to further progress. Since Samus moves so fluidly, you'll find yourself going from one corner of an area to the other in a few minutes.
    Cons:
The graphics could have used some polish. The art direction is good, but there are many areas that looked bland where they could have used some detail. There are plenty of jaggies in this game, including the Metroid veins on the outside of the suit. The lighting made many of the creatures look like they were covered in some kind of slime. From the first time I saw the E3 reveal for Dread, I among many other people thought that the graphics were a bit lacking. I personally wanted them to take the art style from Samus Returns and upscale it to Switch levels of power.
The music was forgettable. Seriously, I can only remember the songs that originated from previous games, None of the original Dread songs stuck out well enough for me to get the tune repeating in my head. I was also hoping for more orchestra/opera-style music. I'm a sucker for the music in the Prime series, so I was hoping to get more of that in this game.
The plot was weak. If you played Samus Returns and saw the Chozo Memories, you'd have a small idea of who the main antagonist of this game is, but even with that you barely know anything about him. It's like throwing Darth Vader into Return of the Jedi without mentioning him in any previous Star Wars movies. The end of the game does reveal a bit more detail about how the villain is connected to Samus, and it does add some cool lore in regards to Samus that helps certain little details of the previous games make a little more sense, but it didn't answer any questions that people were asking about the overall game series lore. Also, why is the Federation so chill after Samus thwarted their plans in Other M (yes it is canon and that sucks) and Fusion? I thought there was going to be a big twist that revealed the EMMI units were made to hunt her down; why else would they be immune to her weapons and have some of her abilities?
Speaking of EMMIs, they didn't fill me with Dread. Have you ever played Subnautica? My first playthrough of that game literally made my heart race as I approached the Reaper areas or the Ghost areas. The EMMIs were fun, but felt like a police chase rather than impending death.
    Where is the third difficulty?
Finally, where are the special endings? Samus Returns did an excellent job of giving you a different ending based on the difficulty and your speed.

The bosses in this game are solid. Take for example the combat with Kraid, the combat is so smooth and joyful yet I barely noticed any frame drops during the combat. Each new boss takes a few attempts to understand the boss but once you get the hang of it, the intense fights are commendable. The boss fights aren't too long, they aren't repetitive (not the soldier bosses), the combat is smooth & intense, the bosses are also not too hard and not too easy. They did a great job striking such a good balance.

The game slowly opens up making Samus more powerful after each upgrade, unlocking new abilities that Samus didn't have before making the character more powerful and joyful to play. As the game opens up, the Samus's combat abilities increase which allows more ways to tackle a boss/explore.

The final few minutes of the game is so well implemented. I'm skipping this section to avoid spoiling the good content.

Overall, Metroid Dread is a very well implemented game. With intense combat, right balance for bosses difficulty, super smooth gameplay and fast combat, great bosses, intense E.M.M.I gameplay, great level designs make this game a masterpiece.

The only unique new thing that is supposed to be the "dread" part is the kind of stealth and escape part when fighting against the emmi bots, for me it was kind of boring, you retry the emmi parts generally 1-10 times to find the correct path and then it's done, but I'm not a horror fan so I probably just miss that point; for the comparison I do find the bots in breath of the wild more menacing. The music and sounds are great. The controls are perfect, perhaps a bit tricky with triggers at times but in general if you make mistake it's on you and not bad controls. The boss fights are challenging but all have recognisable patterns to learn so it really is all about learning the boss patterns, rather than having lightning reflexes and good luck, which is one of the main point that sets it apart from poorly designed indie metroidvanias. (3D FPS) Just because it is 2D doesn't mean it isn't complex; the combat has a lot of depth and a good, fair difficulty. Definitely have to learn some boss patterns in a classic, "git gud" fashion.

Story wise, this is a sequel to Metroid Fusion and has a lot of callbacks to that game. If you are nostalgic for that game, this game will give you the tinglies. Definitely a bit of fan service here (which is a good thing.)

The game is relatively linear; even though you can explore, there is usually only one "correct" path at a time, and if you listen, the game will tell you. Some might be turned off by the lack of hand-holding though. Gameplay goes like: Find new power, go back to wherever that power was needed, rinse repeat. A satisfying loop. This game isn't super long either, I beat my first playthrough in about 6 hours. However, these games are EXTREMELY replayable, so that should add some value for the price tag. It's about quality and not excess quantity here; it isn't bloated like other metroidvanias in the genre.

The stealth sections are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they are fun and interesting at first. On the other, they become a bit tedious and not fun, especially the later ones. They aren't particularly "dread" inducing as you the game implies; the EMMI aren't scary and since respawns were so close I'd legit just let them kill me sometimes so I could reset the room. Thankfully, the game ended right as these wore out their welcome.

Overall, amazing game and a return to form utilizing the Switch hardware. This style of Metroid game is usually on a handheld so it looks and sounds a lot better here.
