The overall experience was so delightful. Although, I have never played a whole Metroid or any 2D game, I love the mechanics and the game play! Definitely a new fan of Metroid here!

Game super fun when running around figuring out puzzles and what not. Reason why it’s not 10 is THE BOSSES HOLY CRAP!! It get good until bosses, then the game has a big spike in difficulty, especially the final boss. Also I think the damage is a little high on some enemy’s. Overall 9.2, would highly recommend.

My main complaint about this game is it is a little bit short, at 6 hours to complete for me personally, but I am aware that the 2D Metroid games were never very long to begin with. Hard mode can extend your experience if you are interested in dying hundreds of times. The game is already fairly difficult to begin with, and hard mode takes it a little over the top for the average player. Overall, this game makes for a fun experience, and I can recommend it with confidence. Expand

It was incredibly exciting to see that a new entry would be released 19 years after Metroid: Fusion but I remained skeptical as Samus Returns was not my favourite entry and Mercury Steam was returning to develop Dread. However, I was proven very wrong.

Metroid Dread is the best metroidvania game I have ever played. I enjoyed all of the other Metroid games but the only one that comes even close is Super Metroid. Metroid Dread is visually stunning, being easily one of (if not the best) looking games on the Nintendo Switch, especially in handheld. It runs like water and the colour work, lighting and designs are all phenomenal. Samus has never been controlled with so much fluidity and ease. The evolution of the parry from Samus Returns and the inclusion of the slide are sure to remain staples of the series, assuming another 2D game follows.

Story wise, it's easily the most involved 2D game. I have not played the Prime series (yet) and I have not heard nice things about Other M's story. The plot takes interesting turns but is not a huge part of the game and takes a backseat to the gameplay. The loop of exploration and upgrades continues here and I was not disappointed. The developers throw so many upgrades and abilities your way all the way up until the end of the game. This sounds overwhelming but in reality, Dread just gives you more options to handle encounters with these moves. The only ability that was wasted was the Phantom Cloak which I may have used 4 times during my whole time playing (around 8 hours). Only 8 hours sounds very short but I can assure that the game is a challenge and will most definitely be very difficult for anybody unfamiliar with this style of game. I felt it was a perfect length and any extra areas or tasks would have potentially dragged the game on too much.

The level design is amazing, I took great notice in the choices the development team took in placing interactions and doors and even the water level in an area steers the players progression. Sequence breaking is available in this game for those talented enough to figure it out (not me) and this game is ripe for speed running. My only gripe with the level design is that I thought it was annoying when backtracking to areas to pick up extra upgrades and would've appreciated some sort of universal fast travel that unlocked upon reaching the final boss. That is only a small nit pick on my part but I decided to include it anyways.

To conclude, Metroid Dread is probably the best in the series and is a fantastic return to the Metroid franchise. This game is suitable for newcomers, however be warned that it is a challenge. This game feels like Nintendo taking ownership of the metroidvania subgenre once again with great triumph. I hope to see the Metroid franchise return to 2D again, but for now we all patiently wait for Prime 4.

It doesn't build the best routes for you: you gotta think and analyze in order to progress. The bosses were creative, difficult but fair. It's possible to defeat each one if you spend some time learning their moves, then what seemed impossible becomes quite easy to achieve.

I only wish the map was more comfortable to use and maybe more meaningful secrets would be also great to have. Other than that, I spent 11 hours and it was worth it.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
