If i have to fight ONE MORE GODDAMN ROBOT BIRD WARRIOR DUO BOSS ISTFG. That being said, the best part of the game is definitely exploring the world and discovering items and finding shortcuts and all that. They definitely have the metroidvania formula down, so that was pretty fun. The EMMI robots that stalk you around the planet were definitely scary, but i wish the stakes were a bit higher with them. When you get killed by one of the EMMIs, it’s kinda stressful n scary but the player isn’t really punished that much for dying. Art direction was good; storyline wasn’t all that deep but i mean it’s not really a story driven game so who cares.

This game certainly earns a 75% on the Dieter Meter. I enjoyed it

So why can't I give this game my highest acolade? The E.M.M.I ruin it.

Their stealth/chase sections are daunting, dread-inducing and off-putting to the new player, lead to many cheap one-hit deaths, yet for the seasoned veteran you can pretty much run to where you need to go without any danger of being captured or killed - for the most part anyway.

Stealth sections shouldn't be something you can blitz through by sprinting through with zero f**ks given. That's the hallmarks of a bad stealth game masquerading as an action-adventure game, which reminds me a lot of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, except Metroid Dread has a very competently built Metroidvania beneath the surface.

It shouldn't be counter-intuitive to sneak around and survey the situation, especially when that's far more likely to impede your progress and put you in danger.

Most of the E.M.M.I are manageable for seasoned players. White is only a challenge because you don't unlock the Phantom Cloak until after it's dead, while Green, Yellow, even Blue can be eluded with relative ease if you know what you're doing.

Purple E.M.M.I is without doubt the worst foe you'll face. It can see through walls, has incredible sight & hearing, and the moment you enter its domain, you had better make damn sure to haul ass and expend your Phantom Cloak for as long as possible, because one slip-up, and this thing will catch up to you and jam its blade into your sternum faster than you can say "What the f**k?"

    - parry system is amazing. Rewards players who have good reflexes. Parrying an attack feels satisfying.

    - crouching slide is really fun to use. Having samus automatically turn into morph ball when climbing into vents is really convenient.

    - Turning into morph ball with one button is convenient as well.

    - Space jump is finally not too annoying to use.

    - a good variety of enemies, and most have unique attacks.

    Bad

    - I wish there were more cutscenes where Samus would react more, or show more emotion, or possibly say something. Or even take off her helmet for a bit, just some kind of interaction aside from fighting or listening to someone.

The bosses are always challenging, and a little unfair at times, but that always makes then satisfying to beat (when they don't throw repeat boss encounters at you). The enemy design is fresh, the story is a fascinating continuation of Fusion's themes and the pace almost never slows down in the wrong places. Seems like a 10/10, right? Well, note how I said 'almost' in terms of pacing. Yeah, the game slows down its brisk pace in the middle after a very important plot development. It does pick the ball back up again after another plot development. I also kind of wish the E.M.M.I. were used more effectively. I mean, their a great addition to the game, and Dead would definitely be lesser without them, but after the first playthrough, they lose their 'dread', and while you can still get tense scenarios, its a shame that the E.M.M.I. don't adapt all that well to your steadily increasing movement capabilities. Also the music is mostly forgettable, although I do like how little of it remixes past themes. But this is definitely my favourite Switch game since 2018. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILERS!!!:

Wow. I’m so shocked & happy this game finally came out. I remember hearing of it years ago after it was teased & eventually canceled, only to be revived after Samus Returns was remade. As a lifelong Metroid fan, this game’s existence was enough to make my inner child explode out as I watched the E3 reveal (one of the only good things from this year’s god awful show). So how is the game? Well if you’ve been on the internet in the last few weeks you know this game is excellent, and it definitely is!! I’m so happy it lived up to the enormous expectations and is doing so well critically & commercially, the series has long deserved this spotlight. I’ve seen a lot of fans throw “best 2D Metroid” around though and I can’t say I really agree there.. I think it’s mostly from the excitement of a new 2D Metroid being released but I think Super Metroid is still objectively the best one. There are flaws here that I wish I could overlook, I think the biggest sin this game commits is that the Soundtrack isn’t really memorable.. Which pains my heart because Metroid soundtracks almost always slap. Not a single track besides the title screen theme caught my attention while playing unfortunately. Also, this game can be brutally hard at times. I’m well seasoned in these games but I got my ass handed to me MANY times, mostly by bosses. I have no issue with learning patterns and overcoming adversity after a few deaths, there’s a whole genre called Souls for that feeling lol. But hitting a brick wall over and over really isn’t my thing. I would go as far to say Dread is around as hard as Fusion (Admittedly I played Fusion when I was a pre-teen so my gaming skills weren’t as they are today, most say it’s among the harder Metroid games to this day though). Yes I felt satisfied after each tough enemy/boss encounter was done for, but some really pushed my patience to the limit, ESPECIALLY the final boss. I LOVE how Kraid came back (I’m pretty sure he’s canonically dead but I really don’t care). Speaking of canonically dead, I’m so bummed that Ridley never showed up! I don’t care what explanation needs to be given! This was the last Metroid game of Samus’ story (for now) he should’ve at least TRIED to show his dead ass! I love Ridley sorry. Anyway, Dread’s big gimmick are the EMMI robot stealth sections, which are exactly what I expected them to be. I’d say around half of them aren’t that tough to bypass and eventually defeat, but the last couple are a pain to deal with at times, especially the Purple one. The fact that it can track you from anywhere was a difficulty spike I wish was more smoothly implemented. It’s basically a mad sprint for the exit, which locks when this thing WILL see you and stun you. Overall though, I thought I would despise the EMMI sections pre-release just because of the trial & error design of their sections, but I really enjoyed the amount of anxiety they gave me! And I’ve never said that for ANYTHING! They were thrilling! I even had my partner feel my chest for my pounding heartbeat right after one of them chased me down after a couple of times of successfully pulling off a difficult counter to avoid death. Difficulty spikes aside, (nothing new for Metroid), this is a fantastic game. I also appreciate the slightly more story we got with this entry. I’m in the minority on this, but I’d always love if Metroid went for a more cinematic approach, I know it goes completely against a lot of what the series is, but as sparse as they are I can’t held but nerdgasm at some of these late game exposition dumps! My jaw dropped at some parts! Yes I’m also a Other M apologist so don’t hate me. If Metroid is one day able to balance bombastic story with bombastic gameplay without pissing the fans off like Other M did, I think that’s a net positive! Dread also easily plays & controls the best out of any game in the series since the Prime series imo. Samus is so much fun to maneuver and engage in combat with. Once you get good you will ZOOM around the map & it never got old for me. I’ve played so many of these games that I felt right at home as soon as Samus woke up from her little nap after getting rekt by the main antagonist, Raven Beak, who has VERY interesting ties to Samus’ past. Overall this game feels like a full circle for the series, despite a few flaws; Bland soundtrack & massive difficulty spikes that made my hands cramp up, I still walked away with a big smile on my face. Metroid is BACK!! Now please don’t take another 20 years to make another, we can’t live forever yet, Nintendo.

    Points positifs:

A dense, tough as nails game. I was surprised as this is the sort of difficulty I’ve come to expect from indie studios, rather than the established ones. It is rather short and linear as recent Metroidvania goes, which is fine considering how intense the game is.

Story - You are given story in little sections and with some cutscenes in the more intense moments, it is not heavy in any way and very easy to follow, even giving you a little recap of the story up to this point at the beginning of the game which is nice. I enjoyed it overall, I loved how simplistic it was and had some nice twists.

Graphics & Performance - I only played the game while docked and the game ran fantastic for me, only stuttering that occurred was in loading screens, otherwise was nice and smooth. Graphics were fantastic as well, a lot of the levels were very atmospheric, you could see a lot of care and attention was put into the backgrounds as you could see enemies leaping around in the background or the local habitat doing their thing. The game looks dark and beautiful.

Combat - If you are a fan of Super Metroid then I see a lot of similarities here but more refined, a lot of the power ups you tend to pick up are from Super Metroid but has some cool new additions as well, I loved the parry move which you can use on certain enemies to get some additional energy and ammo, this for boss fights was typically used as a quick time event which wasn't something that I cared for, but I had a wonderful time with the combat, never felt like your standard enemies were very difficult.

Boss Fights - This game has had a lot of attention for being difficult and yeah I can agree that it is not an easy game, but I played Metroid Dread before reading any reviews and I am not particularly fond of mean and very difficult games, but not once did I feel this was beyond my skill level. Boss fights is where your skills are put to the test, but even if you die, you will always spawn right outside the room you did the fight in, you won't respawn from the last save point, that is something different from Super Metroid and is a big game changer for me. I could jump straight back in and do the fight again, even if I were to die a few times, each time I would progress further and learn their move patterns and the counter attacks for them, if this is something you are not interested in doing in a boss fight then I would suggest sticking with more lighter games. The final boss took me 6-7 times to defeat and yes there was some frustration but each time I did better and better once I learned the moves and I felt so satisfied when I beat it. This is all dependent on your skill level but I feel the difficulty may be getting too much of a negative view when it really isn't as bad as other games I have played.

EMMI - The first few are fun, the more it goes on, the more annoying it becomes. The first few it is more fun to get caught and just run across the level and parkour your way to the exit, I found so much enjoyment in this, but later you encounter far less paths to avoid them, EMMI can appear right in front of a door you enter, the counter window to avoid instant death is not very forgiving, and I just wasn't a fan of having to sit there and wait for EMMI to go away, only to move a little and then have EMMI detect my movements again. This is probably the weakest point of the game in my view, luckily you don't have to deal with them too much and as I said, it is only the later few that really bother me.

Exploration - I really enjoyed this, some reviews I have seen have suggested that the game never gives tips on where you need to go so you get lost easily, but I disagree completely, there is only 1-2 times I got confused on where to go, but for the most part the game is very clever about leading you on a path of where you need to go, if you get a certain item then odds are there is a place nearby to use that item to progress, its about studying your surroundings and reviewing the map from time to time, and that is what Metroidvania-type games are all about. I thought the developers did a good job of not telling you where to go but leaving you with enough to still figure it out without any major issues. Level design is great in that aspect.

Music - Some really dark and ominous tunes play during this game, plus some classics from the Metroid series. Enjoyed the music overall and am hunting for that soundtrack.

Final Review - I think this was a fantastic game, had about 9 hours of playtime with it and completed it within 3 days between work and my personal life. I probably enjoyed this one more than Super Metroid but that is mostly because I felt Super Metroid had some elements that were a little dated or I needed a walkthrough to help me out, while this one I felt more in control of what I was doing and more satisfied with how I progressed. Give it a shot!

It’s still an amazing game each zone u pass through feels fun and full of adventure although that’s really an illusion when most of the zones are just filled up with missile up grades, kinda of a bummer when you’ve been wondering around for 2 hours only to find every hidden thing being a upgrade to health or missiles. On the up side movement always felt great combat and boss fights were just the best parts for me. Game can feel some what liner but that’s a difficult thing for me to explain I find my self comparing it to hollow knight but in hollow knight case ur only vaguely guided around the start while in dread it feels like ur being vaguely guided around your whole trip. Witch I guess isn’t a horrible thing doesn’t make the game any less fun. The difficulty of the game was also done really well never felt like something was impossible as long as I was paying attention to what’s being thrown at me, witch leads to the emme witch start off fairly simple but get more anxiety inducing later in the game especially with the emme that can hear u from anywhere. On the down side emme zones are mostly empty from what I found aside from a missile upgrade here and there. I won’t lie I wanted something hollow knight levels from the genre defining franchise Metroid but even tho I wasn’t given that I still had a great time with dread and what it had to offer. can’t wait till the next mission. Les seuls défauts sont: que au niveau des E.M.M.I, ils sont vraiment répétitifs, quasiment identiques dans la formule. The music is subtle but great and supports the atmosphere of the game. The graphics are very good compared to other Nintendo Switch titles. The technology of the game is good as well, with mostly 60 FPS during normal gameplay. The In-Engine cutscenes

The technology of the game is good as well, with mostly 60 FPS during normal gameplay. The In-Engine cutscenes are OK, with 30 FPS and sometimes some weird animations and movement from Samus, which can be accepted.
The story of the game is somewhat predictable, but story never has been the strength of the Metroid-Series and is not the focus of the game.
The visual design of the world sometimes can get a bit repetitive, but that is rare and forgivable.
The map-design of the world is very good, and it feels very satisfying to explore and search for secrets, even tho' you wont really be able to do that for the first half of the game.
The difficulty is high but fair, which I like. The boss fights are challenging and the enemies deal a lot of damage, but drop a lot of healing and ammo as well.
The gameplay is exactly what you would want and expect from a 2D Metroid: travelling around blasting your foes, searching for upgrades, jumping and climbing, backtracking etc. Even some legendary boss characters from the series are back. The beloved sequence breaking is back and even encouraged, but the game is, if you want, very linear as well.
The new E.M.M.I.-Sequences are cool and hectic, but only really scary for the first time. They really can get annoying and frustrating later in the game, and they are obvious. They could've been hidden or mixed up a bit in the later game.

To sum up: Metroid Dread is a great game, probably the best Nintendo Switch Game of 2021. It is totally worth of being a game from the Metroid-Series and I would recommend everyone to buy the game, whether you are a fan of the series or not.

I love exploring and finding secrets. I just recently played super metroid for the first time and finding secret passages and rooms is what made the game great. In dread, the secrets are obvious and in your face. I wish they rewarded bombing everything like they did in the older games. The exploration is good, but it could be better. I would rather it be obscure and challenging. Expand

Honestly, i think this game is pretty fun. the game itself is good and the controls are also good. but those robots that chase you are so damn annoying and random. 8 out of 10.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
