This gameplay is fun and the graphics and animations are well done, that is all this game has. You can fly through the all of the cups in about an hour against near brain dead cpu opponents and with lack of club play from 4 separate switches this game is not worth 60, it would be hard to justify spending 15 dollars on this game. I don’t understand how Nintendo fanboys justify this games mistakes unless they love replaying the same basic gameplay over and over. Super rush had a lot of hate from people, but at least it allowed you to play with friends the way they marketed the game. Probably the most disappointing game I have ever bought day 1, many mobile games and free games on steam have more content. Expand

Solid gameplay. Lots of fun very close to the original game with small differences like the characters not being able to do their hyper strike whenever they want, instead being replaced by a Smash-like power up. Hopefully with some updates and/or DLC such as a uniform editor, more characters and maps, and this would be the best of the series, but it shows a current flaw in Nintendo’s most recent titles which is unfinished games with promises of updates with more content. There is tons that give this game potential to be great. The character gear is a cool dynamic, and the gameplay feels solid in offline modes. But if you are someone who will be mainly playing this online, I would wait until you could find a copy on sale. Here's why:

There is no 8-person 4v4 online multiplayer, even though it seems this game is made for it. Constantly trying to tell the difference between the player you are controlling and your teammates is tiresome and annoying. For the gameplay itself, the best tactics I've seen so far involve spamming moves that abuse latency like aerial passes and rolling. You could say "just adapt lol" but the lag in online matches is always noticeable, and you feel like you are steadily dropping frames.

Hopefully the online lag can be fixed.

Here we go, yet another underwhelming Mario sports game on the switch. It’s been over a decade since we had a Mario strikers and this game had a lot of potential but they f*cked it up! How could you have a Mario sports game today and not include her? Yes I know there are more coming later but that’s the problem. Nintendo will release their games unfinished and “fix it later” which is a disgusting strategy that they need to stop. There is only one stadium but you can change the background and they all look too similar and uninteresting. I personally do not like the character customization feature, since you can change your character’s stats and that is wrong since it defeats that whole purpose, and I think it’s just an excuse to have less characters. The core gameplay isn’t all that great and feels very cluttered. The character animations are quite charming and probably the best thing about this game, which is not good. The hyperstrikes are okay but I prefer the megastrikes from the previous game as they are more dramatic and satisfying. There aren’t any extra modes in this game which is a big part of what makes Mario sports games so fun. I would strongly recommend you do not buy this game at $60, and Nintendo is doing more to make me embarrassed to be a fan of them. Honestly, they should just hold off on baseball until they get new management. Expand

Was a big fan of previous games in the series, but sadly this is a massive let down.
The sum of the offline content can be completed in a couple of hours. A day at a push if you're getting particularly frustrated by the badly tuned AI.
After that you have online only. In which you'll constantly have to leave and queue again if playing solo because the game thinks you want to play 1v2.

After that you have online only. In which you'll constantly have to leave and queue again if playing solo because the game thinks you want to play 1v2. When you do eventually get to play, it's close to identical teams due to the small roster. There's not enough to entertain for a long time once you realise it's just queue for the same matchup played the same way again and again for no reason other than a game at a time.
More content is allegedly coming via DLC but whether there'll be people waiting for it is questionable. It's kind of like a mobile game in reverse - where instead of hooking you with free, addictive gameplay to have you paying through the nose later for more content; instead the game mugs you in an alley for full sticker price, bores you quickly and wonders if it can lure you back with drip feeding at some unspecified point.
Good luck if you think you'll just pick it up later when there might be content - it's a competitive game at heart, but the lack of a real ladder/rating means any newcomer will get matched into what small community does stick with the game i.e. the hardcore.

CPU at Galactic difficulty is a frustrating experience, not something I would recommend to anyone.
Considering it's the only offline experience I can't recommend the game at its current state.
The online experience with friends is also severely lacking, playing 4v4 with friends is not working as advertised.
Gameplay is solid, but it's a game not ready to be enjoyed as is it.

You can only play with a max of 2 consoles online. I have 3 other friends with the game and we can't even play together. For a game that has basically zero story mode and is all online game play they really **** up the online modes. There is 4 characters per team but only 2 consoles are allowed to connect so the other 2 characters just get randomized. Me and friends will be returning the game.

Unfinished. Lacking in both offline and online content, and gameplay is just a coin toss as it is way too chaotic because of the tiny size of field to accommodate 10 players and items flooding the field just puts this game at the mercy of luck and chaos. Very disappointed.

Only now comes the negative part of the game: The single player content is one of them. There are only 12 trophies to get in total. 6 beginners to advanced, that's what I want to call them first and then 6 galaxy trophies professional champions.
There are only 10 characters and that's pretty weak because the more important characters like Bowser Jr. and Daisy are completely missing in the game.
In addition, there are only 5 stadiums, which is very little for a €60 game.
You can't complain about the multiplayer, the idea with the Strikers Club that you can create your own club and then try to become the best club in the seasons that are to come and later scour for rewards is a huge plus.
In the end I have to say that it's not worth 60€ for this content and you don't have to change anything about it, but all in all the game is a good game for what it wants to be

In terms of online play, it's so much better than its' predecessor's. There isn't an established meta of just using Boo, Dry Bones, and Hammer Bros like there was in Charged - a lot of the very gimmicky things from Charged have been subbed for more balanceable mechanics now, and you can customize your roster to have the strengths that you want on your team.

Really, really well made game. Only complaint is that you can't do 4v4 with 8 switches, it only works with 4. I don't have 3 other friends that want to play this game competitively with me so that's a non-issue, but if you're looking for that, you won't get it. Maybe in an update later.

For single player, the galactic cups really offer a challenge similar to Strikers Charged's Striker Cups. Very rewarding and infuriating just like the old game. Probably less infuriating now actually since you don't have to deal with the stupid stage gimmicks where they just decide to destroy your Dry Bones until the next goal.

I knew going in that the recent Mario sports games were somewhat light on content at launch, and I was even prepared for the same. But Battle League takes the "release now, finish later" philosophy way too far. Ten characters and five stadiums at launch is honestly just pathetic, the offline mode is almost non-existent, and the online is extremely limited. My friends and I were looking forward to 4v4 online matches so much. But guess what? That's not possible, for some reason. It makes me wonder what the point of the Club Mode even is if you can't play it with all of your friends, not to mention the trailers and advertising were pretty misleading but just vague enough to cover their butts legally. Overall, just a shame that they had to ruin an otherwise promising game. Drip-feeding one new character and stadium every few months just isn't going to cut it in 2022 when your content is this barren to start, and games from 25 years ago had more content than this.

    - No poder jugar 4vs4 online.

When you bought a game it was always the entire game and a high quality game. Let's talk about the online. I see alot of people complain about splatoon2 because they "can't" play with their friends but there is battle league... There they can play as 2 and roflstomp any solo player. Let me explain : first, the 2 players win all the box. Secondary, one stand in front of opponent goal and the other just spam the perfect aerial passe so the solo player have 2 choices :
    - switching character to tackle the player in front of the goal then superstrike
    - or trying to chase the unstoppable perfect aerial passe leading to a goal
Let's talk about the club mode. You can't create your own club and join an another club. If you create your own club, you can customise the stadium but you won't have people joining you. Then in club mode, the match will be 1 character full geared with 3 random character with 0 gear and you will be facing full team geared. What's the point to unlock gear with solo content if you can't use it for the competitive mode? The solution is to subscribe to familial nintendo online and create 4 account to play club mode... This game is PAY-TO-WIN !!! They don't say it in their video or demo. If you join a club well... like animal crossing as 4 on 1 save you don't enjoying it. The online don't support 4vs4... wait... apparently you need 2 guys on 1 console + 2 on other console and you have to face 2 guys on 1 console + 2 other on an other console to do 4vs4 in online... 2022.
And final point. If you live in France or in Europe. You can't refund the game. The nintendo support say: learn to read bro!!! 1-8 mean idk anymore...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wish I could say the game was just unplayable garbage, but in all honesty the core mechanics are very engaging and fun. It's just a very lackluster title.

    New features:

Mario Strikers Battle League excels with it's new ideas, which almost all revolve around the game's mechanics. The movement options feel fresh and genuinely like a significant amount of effort was put into them to keep the game interesting. One of my favorite moments in my experience was playing through the game's training courses because it explains how a lot the mechanics that seem random to new players are in the player's control based on a precise timing and a series of inputs. The new gear system is also a great addition that really makes your team building experience feel unique and tailored to your playstyle. That is about everything nice anyone can say about the game. Where Battle League Falls Short:

The amount of single player content is pathetic. I saw the staff credits in two hours, and the only unlockable content is a set of gear and a harder mode for the cups. Even when you beat the "galactic mode", you unlock nothing other than some coins, which you can use to buy gear. If you want to buy every piece of gear in the game like a true completionist, it will cost you 32,000 coins. To put that into perspective, winning an online match will reward you with 20 coins, so good luck earning 1,600 matches of coins without dying of boredom. Obviously, the online, being within a Nintendo service, is susceptible to lag; however, unless you have a friend paired with you or are willing to tolerate a random stranger who is probably playing on a joycon, you can literally get matched against up to four people, which isn't even remotely fair or fun for that matter. Once you're done with all the single player content, which is maybe 6 hours if you do do the training courses and all the cups (including Galactic Mode), this is all you can do, play the same exact mode either against friends or strangers. This isn't even remotely close to the amount of content the previous entries had. There's no milestones, no additional/unlockable settings, no unlockable characters or fields, and every field is exactly the same other than the aesthetics. There aren't any unique gimmicks that keep the fields fresh. It's just "oh that one looks cool I guess". Even with that, there are only five fields, so it feels about as repetitive as it gets. Every character has access to the same 6 sets of gear, which I think is enough, but the amount of characters is just... how? Mario Strikers on the Gamecube had 13 characters when you include sidekicks and Strikers Charged had 20. You would expect this game to have maybe 25. Maybe they'd go crazy and hit 30? No, there are 10 characters. All of the sidekicks have been cut and Toad has now earned his spot as a first-class citizen. This would've been a great opportunity to add really interesting characters like Pauline or King K. Rool. Maybe we'd get a rep that extends outside the Mario franchise. Instead, we can't even get an obvious character like Daisy. This game is simply an example of "it's evolving but backwards". I'm someone who appreciates all the intricate game mechanics, so it's extremely difficult for me to see how any casual player would view a game with this little content as an upgrade to the series, even after a wait of fifteen years.

    Presentation:

A lot of people said they stripped this game of its personality, and I partially agree. The game has become more of a Mario game and less of a Strikers game. I think the best example of this is the replacement of the Kritter goalies, which have now become Boom Boom. That being said, there's still a lot of Strikers left. The characters still have their own interesting personalities, the artstyle is still much of the same, and the soundtrack goes quite hard. I'm satisfied with what we got. It's amazing to me that Nintendo greenlit something like Strikers Charged fifteen years ago where Waluigi crotch chops after scoring and Wario tries to commit suicide with a Bob-omb after a tough loss, so I appreciate what we got.

    Final thoughts:

There's one mode I haven't commented on and that's ranked mode. Why? Because it's not available yet. I feel like when get a $60 game, you should be able to feel like you get the full experience on launch day. I don't care if ranked mode significantly improves the quality of the game in a week. There's no reason why anyone should not be able to write a full review of a full-priced game before waiting ten days after the game's launch. I have no faith in the future DLC updates either. Am I really supposed to get excited for a new character every two months or so when the game is already becoming stale after one weekend? This business practice is horrible. It's crazy that the biggest competition to Nintendo today is their retro games that actually have effort put into them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Less content than the previous 2 strikers. CPU is pretty cheap (opposing team goalie actually blocks most of the time, yours barely ever will). I've played all the cups and literally never got a single Starman. While playing the final cup the last opposing team got a Starman after every made shot and made 100 percent of shots taken. My team would walk away from items so the other team always got it. I either go for ball and lose items only to get pummeled by them or I go for item only for the opposing team to get a guaranteed shot because my goalie won't block it. The cpu isn't good or never gets any better. Your team is just dumb and the cpu who controls your team will leave man to man coverage so that the opposing team is always open and walk away from item drops too. My team cpu has literally been beside the hyper orb when it spawns and have actually walked away from it many times. In the cups it essentially always a 1 vs 7 with how much the cpu works against you. The cpu will also target the player controlled character when you are off ball as well. You could control the furthest character from the ball and the closest cpu controlled character to you will still throw items and takle you. Logically that doesn't make sense so it just seems like it was designed to agress the player even if the player is already in a state where they couldn't possibly be a threat. This is probably the worst and laziest attempt at a mario game I have ever played. And that's saying something considering you can lose every mini game in mario party and still win or vice versa and lose. Expand

Great gameplay and visuals but really lacks in content. Only 10 characters, 5 arenas, and very few game modes. Instead of releasing content in the future it should come included for the $60 price point. Future content should include a lot more characters and arenas to play in. A game mode with penalty kicks would be fun to. 4 players on a team for online co-op should become a thing as well

Some reasonable markers for the players would have been better to track the players better. It happens often that you lose track of the ball, especially when the goal keeper has the ball. It lacks a bit strategic variation and the cups are a bit boring. The selections before the game are annoyingly long, with gears without gears, some characters can be used multiple some only once, always four time.

Music is ok, if you like light rock/metal, else it could be rather meh.

Creativity in terms of character work, atmosphere, and gameplay. The unique personalities that each character got in charged have been watered down severely, the stadium environment has been scaled down and is far less exciting. Even the music which was such a high point previously is absent in battle league. The gameplay though is I think the worst sin of all. In charged you could score via sidekick special shots, mega strikes, simply using the charge mechanic to score with a heavy hitter, or even dodging over the goalie, there was so much creativity allowed in how you chose to play, and you could use it with how much space the field gave you. In battle league you shoot the ball or dump items to use a hyperstrike. It’s mind-numbingly repetitive. The field is tiny and cramped and allows for little to no strategy. I could be doing it wrong but to me it feels essentially up to chance if boom boom blocks a shot or not, it just feels unintuitive. I loved charged and there’s more I could go in to but I would just end up saying the same things over in different ways. This game made me sad. Expand

Reviews have also stated that the developers are “greedy” which I find sad. Next Level Games is not the one at fault here. Do they really think they decide the price and the time frame they will have to compete this game? It’s Nintendo’s fault that there is a lack of content here at launch. Unfortunately though, I cannot in good faith give this any better than a 8 at the moment. I would say my actual score is 7.5/10 as the content is certainly lacking at launch. While the single player (in my opinion) is much better than the first game, it does not compare to Charged’s Road to the Striker Cup, and as far as characters and stadiums go, there’s just not enough, but luckily more will be added later down the line. On top of this, as a rock fan, I love the soundtrack. Is Charged’s soundtrack better? Yes, but this soundtrack is very good in a different way. The fact that true 4v4s with 8 consoles is not possible is annoying as Nintendo clearly made it seem as though it was, but I definitely could see this being added if the competitive scene continues to rise and sales are doing good. Overall I would say if you’re a big Strikers fan/Mario Sports fan, then you definitely can pick this game up now. It’s a ton of fun with friends and family and since 4v4 is possible locally it’s a great party game. But if you’re a casual looking for a game full of content such as characters and stadiums, then I suggest you wait for the updates to be added later down the line. 7.5/10 Expand

Does this have a campaign? Oh that's right, there isn't one. This is clearly another unfinished product by Nintendo. When I pay $60, I expect a top notch AAA quality game that is actually finished. That is exactly what this game lacks.

The graphics are a joke. It literally looks like a mobile game. The physics are terrible. The AI is incredibly stupid. The shadows are lazily designed in this game. It doesn't matter if it is daytime or nighttime, the shadows remain exactly the same. You can clearly see floodlights all over the stadium and it doesn't even have any effect on the shadows. Not even EA would be that cheap and lazy to not bother implementing accurate floodlight shadow effects. The customization is laughable. Lack of content. Toad is so underpowered. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this was supposed to be a soccer game. The "soccer field" is roughly the same size as a basketball court. That is pathetic and so is the gameplay mechanics.

The online multiplayer is complete trash. I was hyped to play 4v4 online with my friends, only to find out that I can't even play 4v4 online. Are you freaking kidding me? To make matters worse, you can't even spectate. It is insane to me that a masterpiece like Rocket League has 4v4 online, spectator mode, and a much larger field for free. That is biblical. Meanwhile, this game has none of that and the greedy developers had the audacity to charge $60 for this glorified Mario Party minigame. This outrageous greed infuriates me. Players have more control over the character and there shots, but that introduces a learning curve that is annoying to learn with all the items and hyperstrikes that fall on the field. Oh boy is this list long.
The main problem is quite simple. The field is to small and the gameplay itself feels very unintuitive.
There are some cool mechanics, but you are not able to make use of them, because of these two main issues the game has.

On the higher difficulty this game gets only frustrating, the CPU will your characters tackle all over the place and it is nearly impossible to built up some game flow. The handling itself feels clunky and aged.

The customization of your characters does not have the effect you might think it have. I spent my earned coins to buy the gear parts and combine them, however the effect is too low and after some frustrating matches I went back to the standard and felt no difference.

The hyperkick animation becomes boring after a while because you can't skip them, especially when you not done it perfectly it gets really annoying.

The Gamecube version is on the gameplay site by far the superior game. You really don't need this game, when you are in possession of the Gamecube version.

Great game with fun mechanics, one of the best multiplayer games for the console and waiting for the upcoming updates. If you love football, you'll love this game and if you don't love the spot, you'll love this game as well!

I was really looking forward to this game also got it on release and was disappointed to say the least. The lack of content at release doesn't sit well with me. The game play feels good 60fps nice and consistent. They nailed the gameplay. The lack of game modes and characters was jaw dropping. Only 10 character at release, 5 maps and 2 modes cup mode which is basically cpu battle and online play. For full price i wouldn't recommend this game, if in the future they add a substantial amount of content and this goes on sale i would say pick it up. Expand

false advertising: no online 4vs4 mode as expected. Lack of content, unfinished.
solo mode is extremely easy, short and boring.
Nintendo lied to us, PLEASE do not buy this game until a new potential update

A Mario sports game on the switch being a disappointing iteration that is worse than previous gens is the least surprising thing. You can almost set your watch to it.

It's great to see Mario and his pals return to the soccer pitch again. And the gameplay is very good. Strikers: Battle League is a very fun game.

It's a great game if you don't want to play too long against a pretty erratic AI. It's disappointing to not be able to control the goalie as well. The online features are excellent. Plus there's the promise of an expanding range of available Nintendo characters for free. A perfect choice for parties. [Issue#320]

I was really looking forward to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and for the most part it has been a worthy successor, but it’s a little hampered by the complexity of the gameplay. Even scoring goals can be a bit difficult overall. Soccer is definitely not known for high-scoring affairs but it is simply too difficult to score goals in the time allotted. This does seem to be different from what I remember in the previous games. It was a bit easier to score goals and that is definitely missed. There’s a balance that sports games need to strike, but Battle League does tend to be just a bit more difficult. Still, there is a lot to love about Mario Strikers: Battle League, but it almost made me want a remaster of the first two games more than anything.

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. In our memories, 'Super Mario strikers' on our Gamecube was the best of the best, unmatched and wonderful. Fair is not fair, as it sets the bar extremely high for 'Mario strikers battle league'. But there's more: this game feels like it's not quite finished.
