The core gameplay is a light 6 out of 10.

    Overall it’s a 5 out of 10.

Don’t buy in it’s current state.

Wait until Nintendo drops a vastly updated roster along the lines of Mario Tennis Aces and patches up the online.

This is definitely a game with tremendous potential. The problem is Nintendo can’t be interested in developing it.

Thanks to stupid AI of boom boom mid range goals are repetitive and not fun at all. Roster is so limited, overall readability makes you feel tired. Green pitch is too boring for a strikers game.

Also there are some things that I couldn't name it, I mean this game feels like beta. It is not common for a sports game to make you feel that you have seen it all after a short period of play time and this game not giving you an excuse to return to it.

As a strikers fan who have been waited to play a sequel for more than a decade, I am sad

Mario Strikers: Battle League is a fun game that unfortunately has little to no content to offer. The multiplayer and online aspects of the game are fun and they are what makes the game somewhat enjoyable, as of now.

Like Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf Super Rush, this will bring free DLC to expand on what is available and with that the game will, hopefully, be worth the 60$ price tag because as of now it feels like (at maximum) a 20$ game or even a free to play game.
The mechanics are quite deep in this new entry to the franchise and you'll need some time to get used to it but once you get used to it, you can feel how fun and intuitive it is to play. Also Next Level Games put a lot of time into the soundtrack and the animations which make the game play feel really smooth and gives a lot of charisma and personality to the unfortunately small roaster of playable characters we have right now available, without the DLC.
If you have no friends or no NSO membership this game won't be for you, since the only single-player content it offers is battling against CPU's in matches or tournaments and it can get repetitive and tedious really fast, which is a shame because the animations and gameplay are fluid.
In conclusion, without the DLC, Mario Strikers: Battle League is not worth it because of it's little to non existing content!

The negatives, however, outweigh the positives since after you have played a dozen or so games you quickly realize there is nothing to do in the game! If you try and play online with your friends - that is capped at two players per game so you are stuck with the cpu for the other 2 players. There seems to be no way that I can find to control the goalie so you are often stuck with lackluster performance from the cpu. And, if you play locally there is nothing really to do as it is just the same cup over and over again. There is no story, no engagement, nothing to do in the game! Seems like something that would be released for $30-$40 USD as a party game. Definitely not a full $60 title!

In 5-6 days the leagues are going to start. Maybe that will fix the online play, but then again there is nothing in the game to keep me playing for the next 5-6 days so I will probably return the game to Gamefly and never look back.

Hopefully everyone else tries a rental before buying since it seems like it will only appeal to a very niche audience and for most people not worth the $60 asking price!

I had a lot of fun playing with friends, and playing against random opponents online was also fun. As expected, it’s a bit less entertaining playing against the AI.

However, the game really struggles with the content. This game feels just as bare as the Mario Gold and Mario Tennis games that came out for the Switch. It’s pretty clear they intend on adding more content as time goes on, but this makes me wonder - why? Surely this has to do with sales in some way, because it’s the third Mario sports game to do the same thing. The amount of characters, stages, and modes is extremely limited. Sometimes it feels as if this is a $20-30 game with the amount of content that is included. Unless you have a group of friends that you will regularly play this game with, it’s not going to hold your attention long. Nintendo made some very odd choices as well. They added a gear system to the game, which allows you to equip gear that changes the stats of your character. In a way, this is a good idea because it adds for variety in the characters you face. On the other hand, being able to customize the stats to such a huge extent on this limited of a roster makes you realize that almost all of the characters are exactly the same. That’s stupid and is not well thought out. The other major issue is that the AI can be pretty stupid. This could be remedied by allowing it to be a full eight player online (4 vs 4) matchup, however online can only be four players (2 per team). This limits the complexity of the gameplay, and makes you rely on the AI which makes really dumb mistakes or just locks into one position on the field, further limiting your attack.

It’s a decent game, but as with the other Mario sports games, the content is so limited that it hurts the experience and really prevents you from spending a lot of time on it. It’s a fun pick up and play a couple matches game, but I can see it collecting dust pretty quickly. I hope Nintendo figures it out, they are dropping the ball on games that could be fun for years. It’s a soulless effort.

Right now, its the video game equivalent to being sold a raw pizza at a pizza joint. It technically is what you paid for (a pizza), but you will find little value in it and will also be disappointed that it costed the same as a fully prepared pizza. Oh, and the toppings on said raw pizza are spoiled.

I am going to play this game, I think the gameplay is solid and it can literally only go up from here. I am going to enjoy this game eventually I'm sure, and I'm sure that many others will as well; however, I can't recommend Battle League to anyone in it's current state. Even if this game was free to play I would still feel that the game just doesn't have enough to hold anyone's attention for more than the four hours of solo content - which itself is more frustrating than fun.

The solo content is cup mode or quick play. Cup mode is way too easy on the easiest difficulty and the next unlockable difficulty is for Galactic mode. Galactic mode is a serious test of patience. The ally AI are absolutely brain dead and just stand around while the enemy AI has near perfect dodging and field coverage and will body check you constantly. Also, the ally goalie is much less accurate than the enemy goalie. The enemy team will be able to score without even charging their shots while the enemy goalie blocks the vast majority of perfect shots from any distance and from any angle - even with heavy curving. I'm all for challenge and I am continuing to play galactic mode to try and get at least one of the cups but it honestly feels downright unfair. If you know, you know.

If you are reading this and haven't bought the game yet and absolutely must play it, just wait for updates. I feel that you may regret your purchase if you don't wait for more updates - I know I do.

Oh boy is this list long.
The main problem is quite simple. The field is to small and the gameplay itself feels very unintuitive.
There are some cool mechanics, but you are not able to make use of them, because of these two main issues the game has.

On the higher difficulty this game gets only frustrating, the CPU will your characters tackle all over the place and it is nearly impossible to built up some game flow. The handling itself feels clunky and aged.

The customization of your characters does not have the effect you might think it have. I spent my earned coins to buy the gear parts and combine them, however the effect is too low and after some frustrating matches I went back to the standard and felt no difference.

The hyperkick animation becomes boring after a while because you can't skip them, especially when you not done it perfectly it gets really annoying.

The Gamecube version is on the gameplay site by far the superior game. You really don't need this game, when you are in possession of the Gamecube version.

The core gameplay feels off. Players have more control over the character and there shots, but that introduces a learning curve that is annoying to learn with all the items and hyperstrikes that fall on the field. The gear customization doesn’t change a whole much to make the match more interesting.

Great gameplay and visuals but really lacks in content. Only 10 characters, 5 arenas, and very few game modes. Instead of releasing content in the future it should come included for the $60 price point. Future content should include a lot more characters and arenas to play in. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wish I could say the game was just unplayable garbage, but in all honesty the core mechanics are very engaging and fun. It's just a very lackluster title.

    New features:

Mario Strikers Battle League excels with it's new ideas, which almost all revolve around the game's mechanics. The movement options feel fresh and genuinely like a significant amount of effort was put into them to keep the game interesting. One of my favorite moments in my experience was playing through the game's training courses because it explains how a lot the mechanics that seem random to new players are in the player's control based on a precise timing and a series of inputs. The new gear system is also a great addition that really makes your team building experience feel unique and tailored to your playstyle. That is about everything nice anyone can say about the game. Where Battle League Falls Short:

The amount of single player content is pathetic. I saw the staff credits in two hours, and the only unlockable content is a set of gear and a harder mode for the cups. Even when you beat the "galactic mode", you unlock nothing other than some coins, which you can use to buy gear. If you want to buy every piece of gear in the game like a true completionist, it will cost you 32,000 coins. To put that into perspective, winning an online match will reward you with 20 coins, so good luck earning 1,600 matches of coins without dying of boredom. Obviously, the online, being within a Nintendo service, is susceptible to lag; however, unless you have a friend paired with you or are willing to tolerate a random stranger who is probably playing on a joycon, you can literally get matched against up to four people, which isn't even remotely fair or fun for that matter. Once you're done with all the single player content, which is maybe 6 hours if you do do the training courses and all the cups (including Galactic Mode), this is all you can do, play the same exact mode either against friends or strangers. This isn't even remotely close to the amount of content the previous entries had. There's no milestones, no additional/unlockable settings, no unlockable characters or fields, and every field is exactly the same other than the aesthetics. There aren't any unique gimmicks that keep the fields fresh. It's just "oh that one looks cool I guess". Even with that, there are only five fields, so it feels about as repetitive as it gets. Every character has access to the same 6 sets of gear, which I think is enough, but the amount of characters is just... how? Mario Strikers on the Gamecube had 13 characters when you include sidekicks and Strikers Charged had 20. You would expect this game to have maybe 25. Maybe they'd go crazy and hit 30? No, there are 10 characters. All of the sidekicks have been cut and Toad has now earned his spot as a first-class citizen. This would've been a great opportunity to add really interesting characters like Pauline or King K. Rool. Maybe we'd get a rep that extends outside the Mario franchise. Instead, we can't even get an obvious character like Daisy. This game is simply an example of "it's evolving but backwards". I'm someone who appreciates all the intricate game mechanics, so it's extremely difficult for me to see how any casual player would view a game with this little content as an upgrade to the series, even after a wait of fifteen years.

    Presentation:

A lot of people said they stripped this game of its personality, and I partially agree. The game has become more of a Mario game and less of a Strikers game. I think the best example of this is the replacement of the Kritter goalies, which have now become Boom Boom. That being said, there's still a lot of Strikers left. The characters still have their own interesting personalities, the artstyle is still much of the same, and the soundtrack goes quite hard. I'm satisfied with what we got. It's amazing to me that Nintendo greenlit something like Strikers Charged fifteen years ago where Waluigi crotch chops after scoring and Wario tries to commit suicide with a Bob-omb after a tough loss, so I appreciate what we got.

    Final thoughts:

There's one mode I haven't commented on and that's ranked mode. Why? Because it's not available yet. I feel like when get a $60 game, you should be able to feel like you get the full experience on launch day. I don't care if ranked mode significantly improves the quality of the game in a week. There's no reason why anyone should not be able to write a full review of a full-priced game before waiting ten days after the game's launch. I have no faith in the future DLC updates either. Am I really supposed to get excited for a new character every two months or so when the game is already becoming stale after one weekend? This business practice is horrible. It's crazy that the biggest competition to Nintendo today is their retro games that actually have effort put into them.

Needing more arenas with more variety, at least one single player tournament or story mode and more characters. The characters that were in Strikers Charged shouldn't of been cut. Bring back Daisy and Kritter for example. Hopefully an update fixes these issues.

The advertising for this game was purposefully deceitful to give the appearance one could play 4v4 online with their friends, which surprise, you cannot do. Other than that, the game is wildly mediocre so it doesn't even have that going for it to make up for the obfuscated online configurations.

This game is unfinished. The mechanics are good, but at this point, it only has a few hours of playability before you've seen everything. Lacking a lot of content. Needs a patch desperately to be worth its price tag.

    Diseño: 70
    Música: 60
    Contenido: 0
    Total: 42

Game play is a ton of fun - but I just can't justify paying almost $100 (CAD) for this at the moment. As most would agree, the game is lacking content - big time. Would only recommend picking this game up if you have friends to play with all the time. Otherwise, I'm probably going to re-buy it down the road once there's some patches or a sale.

-Design choices are great: they give me "challenge vibes" -in particular the hypershots- , the equipments and stadium designs are great and the animations are well developed
-Nice mechanics: the in-match mechanics are well explained (thanks to training) and the difficulty curve to master them is not so steep. I love the club mechanics and I can't wait to start the season.
-Great reiterability: online, local or single player it's not boring at all. Matches are always different from each other thanks to the instruments, mechanics and AI's

And now the (many) bad things of this game:
-Online coop: I think this is absolutely the greatest missed opportunity of this game. Why should I play with just two consoles per team? I expect that, when the total team characters are four, I can connect myself with other three friends. Furthermore, considering the time in which we are (nearly after a global pandemy) it's not always easy to stay with friends "in presence", which is what this game force to do if I want to play with other three people online.
-Extremely poor roaster: a 4v4 game with 10 characters is too poor. I know that will add new characters later, but at the moment this can be a problem in terms of variability of the game.
-Cup mode: it starts with an AI that is at the limit of stupidty and, after winning all cups in the normal mode, becomes extremely hard, in particular for novices. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but that level should be smoothed a bit adding an intermediate level or increasing the difficulty of the lower rank
-1St season online: it's unacceptable that season starts seven days after the game release, because in this way it sounds like it is incomplete for me

It's overall controls are pretty solid however sometimes they don't nudge to press a button that might win you a round, but that's not Battle Leauge's fault. What IS Battle Leauge's fault though, is the lack of charm, or sidemodes. Take Super Mario Party for example, a good Switch game, had a handful of side modes to play when you were bored, and although not all of them are exactly novelties of top-tier game design and gameplay, there was always something to do. Here though, there are like, two? I'm not gonna even play the game to check. Like a lot of other Mario's Switch sports games, for example Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf: Super Rush and Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it has very few, or more occasionally no gimmick or mechanic that makes anything really worth coming back to, unless it's getting a damn trophy that the game requires you to get before your legs can move an inch further into a game. Overall, if you want a good football OR SOCCER experience in a game, get the previous Mario Strikers. They are fleshed out a lot better and don't have absolutely AWFUL AI in it. Expand

Secondly, the game is really hard to master. It has so many mechanics to learn that eventually you forget about them when actually playing, and using only the basics.

The online mode is a mess. It's more like a fighting game than sport. This isn't bad if course, it's the main gimmick. But.. In a field so small you barely get the chance to think before you act. It's more like pressing random buttons than actually enjoying it. I play his game for 5 hours so I may change my opinion over time, but for someone who doesn't have much time to invest, it will be a problem. Also, changing characters mid game feels incredibly unresponsive. You try to change to someone you want but the game will pick someone else and confuse you completely. But the biggest problem of all in the gameplay, is this god awful goalkeeper. This NPC has to be fixed ASAP. The guy sometimes guards the goal like a.. goalkeeper(obviously) , catching the most difficult shots. However... some other times you just randomly shoot from mid-field and he just lets the ball in. My biggest personal issue with this game is this specific NPC. I dare say it's the main reason this game is bad. It definitely needs to be patched. As for the performance, I don't know if it's my problem but I get frame drops regularly in online mode.

I think Nintendo will eventually patch this game and add more content. This game has an incredible potential but it's overthrown by.. not many, yet serious issues..

If you are a huge fun of soccer and Mario I guess it's a good game to pick up but I would personally wait for this game to be updated and patched. Right now, its just not fun...

How could you have a Mario sports game today and not include her? Yes I know there are more coming later but that’s the problem. Nintendo will release their games unfinished and “fix it later” which is a disgusting strategy that they need to stop. There is only one stadium but you can change the background and they all look too similar and uninteresting. I personally do not like the character customization feature, since you can change your character’s stats and that is wrong since it defeats that whole purpose, and I think it’s just an excuse to have less characters. The core gameplay isn’t all that great and feels very cluttered. The character animations are quite charming and probably the best thing about this game, which is not good. The hyperstrikes are okay but I prefer the megastrikes from the previous game as they are more dramatic and satisfying. There aren’t any extra modes in this game which is a big part of what makes Mario sports games so fun. They are doing this with three games this year, Nintendo Switch Sports, Mario Strikers, and Splatoon 3! Online used to be free, this just comes off as greedy. This game really represents some of the worst aspects of modern Nintendo. The only positives I can say is that this game functions well, but that's a given with many Nintendo games, even some of the worst Nintendo games are polished and play just fine. Expand

The online didn't work well when I tried it either. There was about a second of network delay. That's more then enough time for the other player to complete an action before the game responds to your inputs. I'll need to give the online so more time but my initial impressions; simply annoyed at the network performance.

First the pros and the cons

    Pros,

    1. inventive gameplay

    2. customizable character stats

    3. level merging is kind of cool

    Cons

    1. visuals are very cluttered and un organized (hard to distinguish whos who on the field, needs player colors to return like smash bros OR THE OLDER MARIO STRIKERS)

2 Team AI never seems to be where they should be. (I've seen them countless times go everyway they shouldn't be and it usually results on the opposite team scoring)

    3. Difficulty spikes are pretty horrendous (though to be far its a mix unfair Skynet like AI and me sucking a bit so take that as you will)

    4. not enough content.

its very sickening because it feels as though Nintendo is taking they're fans for granted.
There's no story mode and only 10 characters at launch and they haven't addressed the complaints that have clearly been screamed by fans of this game.
compared to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl this game feels like a 35$ alpha test on steam.
I hate to say because there really is a great game here but there's way too much crap to dig threw to find it,
id say this game is worth 25$ at best and I cant even recommend it to anyone.
just spend your money on Mario tennis or golf, they have they're issues but they are leagues better them Mario Strikers Battle League, at least with those games you got a campaign as well as a few different multi-player options.
Plus Mario Golf is pretty amusing with motion controls.

Creativity in terms of character work, atmosphere, and gameplay. The unique personalities that each character got in charged have been watered down severely, the stadium environment has been scaled down and is far less exciting. Even the music which was such a high point previously is absent in battle league. The gameplay though is I think the worst sin of all. In charged you could score via sidekick special shots, mega strikes, simply using the charge mechanic to score with a heavy hitter, or even dodging over the goalie, there was so much creativity allowed in how you chose to play, and you could use it with how much space the field gave you. In battle league you shoot the ball or dump items to use a hyperstrike. It’s mind-numbingly repetitive. The field is tiny and cramped and allows for little to no strategy. I could be doing it wrong but to me it feels essentially up to chance if boom boom blocks a shot or not, it just feels unintuitive. I loved charged and there’s more I could go in to but I would just end up saying the same things over in different ways. This game made me sad. Expand

I knew going in that the recent Mario sports games were somewhat light on content at launch, and I was even prepared for the same. But Battle League takes the "release now, finish later" philosophy way too far. Ten characters and five stadiums at launch is honestly just pathetic, the offline mode is almost non-existent, and the online is extremely limited. My friends and I were looking forward to 4v4 online matches so much. But guess what? That's not possible, for some reason. It makes me wonder what the point of the Club Mode even is if you can't play it with all of your friends, not to mention the trailers and advertising were pretty misleading but just vague enough to cover their butts legally. Overall, just a shame that they had to ruin an otherwise promising game. Drip-feeding one new character and stadium every few months just isn't going to cut it in 2022 when your content is this barren to start, and games from 25 years ago had more content than this. There is tons that give this game potential to be great. The character gear is a cool dynamic, and the gameplay feels solid in offline modes. But if you are someone who will be mainly playing this online, I would wait until you could find a copy on sale. Here's why:

There is no 8-person 4v4 online multiplayer, even though it seems this game is made for it. Constantly trying to tell the difference between the player you are controlling and your teammates is tiresome and annoying. For the gameplay itself, the best tactics I've seen so far involve spamming moves that abuse latency like aerial passes and rolling. You could say "just adapt lol" but the lag in online matches is always noticeable, and you feel like you are steadily dropping frames.

Hopefully the online lag can be fixed.

Unfinished garbage, like every Mario Sports game on Switch. Just when I thought Nintendo couldn't drop the ball any lower, they did it again. I was disappointed with Mario Tennis Aces, because the new mechanics ruined the game and the story mode felt half-baked, but at least the game had a good roster at launch and a great roster after getting some updates. I was disappointed with Mario Tennis Aces, because the new mechanics ruined the game and the story mode felt half-baked, but at least the game had a good roster at launch and a great roster after getting some updates. I thought that that game would be an "exception" and that we might get fully developed games again.

Then Mario Golf: Ultra Rushed happened, which changed the gameplay so much that it became unplayable to me. The controls are horrible, the animations are boring, and the gimmick is stupid. They dropped that game like a stone after a couple of months.

And here we are, with Mario Strikers: Battle League. That game is just the icing on the cake. It is much slower than Mario Strikers Charged on Wii, and even slower than Mario Smash Football on GameCube. It has less content than the GameCube title.
Of course, fanboys will argue: "Bruh, Mario Smash Football only had 9 characters, so Battle League is an improvement!1". Sadly those fanboys don't have the mental capacity to realize that the original Mario Smash Football has 13 characters, since there are also sidekicks to choose from. The same applies to the Wii title: the sidekicks add so much to the game and made it fun. In Battle League, the sidekicks are completely absent, meaning that the total amount of characters is 10, which is less than the original game released 17 years ago.

The stadiums are really boring and all play the same. Fanboys would once again argue that the original Smash Football also only featured basic stadiums. But at least those stadiums had fun themes and they looked all different. In this game, there are only 5 stadiums which all play the same. The stadium hazards from Strikers are gone and so is the fun. Plus they are much smaller than the stadiums in the previous games.

As if this wasn't insulting enough, there's next to no single player content. Sure, Mario Strikers never had much single player content. But at least the original had the Custom Battle mode while Strikers had an online mode. Speaking of online, it's absolutely terrible. 4v4 isn't possible even though the advertisements seem to state otherwise. It's once again one of those stupid restrictions Nintendo puts into place that makes no sense whatsoever.

Gone are the fun animations from Mario Strikers Charged, which were absolutely perfect and fit the character's personality really well. While the animations are smooth and nice to look at in Battle League, they lack any character or personality from the previous Mario Strikers games. It seems that literally everything was made more tame, more "safe" in this game, which seems to be a reoccurring trend for Mario games on Switch. It's such a shame, really. Also, the amount of animations per character is really low, so after a couple of goals, you have seen everything. In Charged Football, the game kept surprising me with outrageous and funny animations, making it so much more fun to play.

Gone is the amazing soundtrack from the previous game. In Charged, every character had a different musical style and theme. Here, everything sounds the same. It's just some run of the mill rock soundtrack which was instantly forgettable.

All of this makes for a horrible game. Sure, the BASE GAMEPLAY is there. It works. It doesn't seem to have noticeable glitches or anything. But it's LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE that ruins this game: no content, horrible online, lame animations (although the graphics ARE good), boring stadiums, and an insultingly low amount of playable characters. Nintendo intents to "fix" this by drip-feeding content. Sorry, that's not gonna work a third time. It is time to rise up and tell Nintendo to stop releasing unfinished games. I do know Nintendo's intentions. No, they are not doing it to make the players come back to this game after a couple of months. Their primary goal is to make the cartridges worthless. They want to kill the physical "used game" market. In 20 years, when Nintendo's update servers for this game shut down, you can't update the game anymore and you are left with an incomplete game on the cartridge, making it absolutely worthless. Nintendo wants you to stop selling and buying used games. They are greedy, disgusting businessmen who have forgotten what made them so great in the past. They can't even push out a complete game anymore.

It is hopeless. The only way to stop it is TO - NOT - BUY - IT! Do not give Nintendo your money. Please. If you keep spending money on Nintendo stuff, they will continue to push out unfinished games with no content. This is not the Nintendo I grew up with. This is not the Nintendo I want to support.

Sometimes online will just throw you into a 2v1 without warning you. There's no fun single player. The cup format is double elimination which is just not as interesting as the league system in previous games. The character themes from Charged are also gone (you'd think it'd be easy to do character themes when you only have 10 characteres)

Overall, this is a $20 game. The gamecube Strikers had more content than this one and that came out over a decade ago. The club system could be fun, but there's no ranked mode at the moment and we have no idea if 4v4 or DLC will fix this game's glaring flaws. As of now, I see no reason to play this game over past strikers games.

I was really looking forward to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and for the most part it has been a worthy successor, but it’s a little hampered by the complexity of the gameplay. Even scoring goals can be a bit difficult overall. Soccer is definitely not known for high-scoring affairs but it is simply too difficult to score goals in the time allotted. This does seem to be different from what I remember in the previous games. It was a bit easier to score goals and that is definitely missed. There’s a balance that sports games need to strike, but Battle League does tend to be just a bit more difficult. Still, there is a lot to love about Mario Strikers: Battle League, but it almost made me want a remaster of the first two games more than anything.

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. In our memories, 'Super Mario strikers' on our Gamecube was the best of the best, unmatched and wonderful. Fair is not fair, as it sets the bar extremely high for 'Mario strikers battle league'. But there's more: this game feels like it's not quite finished.
