    Maneater
    a swimmingly good time
Maneater is an 8 hour long action rpg where you play as a shark, to prevent spoilers ill just say this is a revenge story… A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style… here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark.. and really this is just a game about dumb fun, eating other animals, battling your way up the food

A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style…
here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark.. and really this is just a game about dumb fun,
eating other animals, battling your way up the food chain, completing quests and finding collectables to progress through the story…
And again this is just a dumb fun game.. it’s a nice distraction.. as maneater overall is pretty repetitive and tedious after a while… a game that’s more fun with breaks in between a new rigion… I never really found the exploration to be fun or even aquring new skills or leveling up the different equippable upgrades.. this game is simply swim and either take on a hunted animal in that region, take on an apex animal which is a regions boss fights, do some population control or eat some humans… rinse repeat all the way til the end of the game..
Maneater is its most special during its first few hours as youre flaing with all the cool things you can do.. hopping on shore to snack on some human flesh.. antagonizing bounty hunters to come out and play so you can eat them and aquire a new upgradable item to increase your stains or gain a new ability… all of this is a blast… but it remains a blast to the past afterwards as maneater doesn’t really do much to keep you entertained beyond those first few hours..
eventually it just feels like a map cleaning game..
Ultimately though maneater is fun distraction… despite the tedium I thankfully had a revenge story pulling me through, and a progression system that actually felt like It mattered..
    I give maneater
    a 7/10

Easily my game of the year from 2020, although it's too bad I only got around to picking it up now. I'm not going to spend too long writing this review, but simply put, this game executes the concept well.

I really want to love Maneater as it clearly has a lot of heart and does some things very well. Unfortunately, it ends up falling short.

You play as a mutating shark on a quest for vengeance as she chomps her way through a port town in order to bulk up and take on the famous shark hunter that took down her mother. If that sounds campy: That's because it is. The good kind. The game

You play as a mutating shark on a quest for vengeance as she chomps her way through a port town in order to bulk up and take on the famous shark hunter that took down her mother. If that sounds campy: That's because it is. The good kind. The game strikes a perfect "so-bad-it's-good" tone for an unapologetically fun, zany and hyperviolent experience. Aided by some funny quips and excellent voice acting, it's what carries the game.

Maneater drops the ball where it really counts, however: the gameplay. First and foremost: Combat is boring and janky. Admittedly it's difficult to develop a good system when you're limited to underwater fish combat, but it could've been a lot better than it ended up being. Half of your time is spent wrestling the camera in order to track your prey because you don't get a proper lock-on system, the other half is spent mashing bite because that's really all the strategy you need. Some mutations make combat especially trivial and it doesn't get much better when fighting shark hunters or bosses, who are essentially just (reskinned) regular enemies.

In addition, all sins of open world quest design are present. There's a bunch of collectibles and every quest is basically "go here and kill 10 of this". To make things worse, the specific enemy you have to kill often repeats several times in a row. The developers must've been pressed for time, because I can't imagine someone looking at this content and thinking it's a job well done.

Finally, the game is short. I took 2 days to max out and finish the main storyline (while still focussing on side activities). A 3rd to 100% the game. In a way, this saves the experience because you'll finish the game before the narration and novelty of being a shark run stale and leave you with an empty husk of an RPG. Seeing how it has barely any replay value, however, you could wonder if 2-3 days of shark gameplay are worth the (admittedly not very high) pricetag.

If you think goofing around as a hyperviolent, mutant shark in a campy port town is going to scratch that itch you never knew you had: Go for it. If that doesn't instantly sound incredibly appealing: Let this one slide. I hope the spiritual successors to Maneater iron out some of the flaws.

I had a blast playing this game. I even went back to get 100% in each area after the story ended.

If you’ve ever watched movies like the classic Jaws and found yourself vocally rooting for the shark, Maneater will likely be squarely in your wheelhouse. Wisely letting you initially get a taste of the carnage and mayhem to come you’ll get to terrorize some tourists and take on hunters right away, leading to some story elements that will then start you out as square one as a mere pup trying to survive in the bayou. From here the game plays much like classic titles where you’ll need to attack and consume other creatures roughly the same strength or less than you, with an option to take a chance on bigger creatures who you’ll get a great reward for defeating but could easily succumb to as well if you push too hard. The thing is, the grind can be very slow as you swim all around in search of prey and pick-ups to help your case, so ultimately even though you can slowly upgrade to becoming a truly fearsome force of nature those thrills are, by comparison, short lived to quite a fair amount of repetition to get there. The high points are a thrill, just be sure you’re ready for soldiering through the mid and low ones on the way.

Giving credence to the claim that the Switch can’t run games properly, Maneater seems poorly ported. The reality though? It isn’t very good anyway. [Issue #4, p. 67]

There are memorable moments, but you'll have to wade through myriad problems and poor design decisions in order to chomp into the meat of Maneater. [Issue #55 – October 2021, p. 21]

It may not tackle deep, meaningful themes, but Maneater is a great way to shut one’s brain off and chill on the couch for a couple of hours with a simple (but satisfying) power fantasy. This fantasy just so happens to involve a shark who can attack sunbathers by dropping in them from twenty feet in the air…
