Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure has definite room for improvement and polish, but I still suspect it’ll find an audience. It has just enough challenge for kids, while older players might not mind an easier adventure if they’re franchise fans or just looking for a competent 3D platformer. Definitely wait for a sale though, as the amount and quality of the content here doesn’t match its launch price.

Scrat's Nutty Adventure finally gives Scrat his own game. The rodent runs around and collects tons of acorns. But the acorns don't affect the game at all. Next to that the game is way too simple, even for the younger gamers. It primarily focuses on the small starting gamer. Still, Scrat is a hilarious animal that makes you laugh.

Developer Just Add Water was onto something here, piping in some great concepts from past 3D platformers, but the follow-through is a swing and a miss! [Issue #45 – March/April 2020, p. 70]

In short, Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure takes basic ideas from other 3D platformers and tries to show how impressive they are, when in reality they are just things you’ve seen before. If you are a big Ice Age fan, then this is a harmless experience that doesn’t add to what the movies offer and rather imitates what came before it. For my money, I say let this one hibernate for the winter.

With no Ice Age movie releasing in tandem with Scrat’s Nutty Adventure, the choice to not give Just Add Water a few extra months to add polish is disappointing. At best, Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a decent distraction for kids.

Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure captures the essence of the movies and Scrat’s erratic mannerisms accurately, but the uninspiring platforming and awful performance make it a port worthy of extinction. So what killed the dinosaurs? In this case, the framerate.

Instead of being a brand new platformer, Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure feels like a remaster of a game from the early 2000s, and not a very good one either. On the positive side, the level design is pretty good, with areas connecting to one another in a way that feels large-scale, but remains comfortably linear. Otherwise, Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure completely lacks challenge, is extremely repetitive and runs on the Switch about as well as Manny the Mammoth runs after gorging on a bunch of peaches. In short, it's exactly what you’d expect from a licensed game of this type.

It does have it’s flaws but I can see that there was some kind of passion behind this project. However, again, it does have it’s fair share of problems.

This game needed more time in the oven, it can be glitches and is rough around the edges. I was able to glitch through walls and even the ground with ease in a good number of stages. Sometimes it happen on accident, sometimes I was trying to break the game for fun. The games does look pretty good for a modern kids game, but it’s not overwhelming. It also comes with a couple of graphical glitches, for example Scrat’s model stutters and there is a weird shadow that follows him in the ground. The cutscenes are also mostly broken with sound effects and music that don’t play at the right time. Speaking of music that’s something this game is reallt lacking, overall it’s good but it’s way too quiet and sometimes just stops playing all together. And the music isn’t really fitting for a kid friendly 3D platformer. One of the things that rubbed me the wrong way most was the lack of sound effects during gameplay. The main collectible, little purple rocks that act like coins in Mario, don’t make a satisfying sound when collecting them. The game also runs pretty bad on Nintendo Switch. I haven’t played the PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game, but I have the feeling it doesn’t run much better on those platforms as well. The game does run fairly well on tv, with some staggering and frame drops. But as soon as you play in handheld mode it really becomes a slideshow. It’s one of the few Switch games I refuse to play in handheld mode because of it, and I normally don’t even care that much about framerates personally.

All of these problems make the game feel pretty unpolished, but it’s not all bad news. I really enjoyed the platforming for example. 3D platformers are my favorite genre and I even grew up with Ice Age Meltdown on PS2, so this game really hits some nostalgia parts for me. But overall I do really like the way scrat controls. He is tied and feels great to play as. The platforming challenges are pretty easy, you are not getting anything complex as with other 3D platformers like Super Mario Odyssey or A Hat in Time. But it has good design and is sometimes suprisingly clever. It has puzzels you need to solve that make use of the throwing in jumping mechanics and some even some boss fights where you need to exploit the environment to beat them. But again it’s all pretty easy. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, not at all, it was actually a very relaxing time playing this game. And I can’t say I regret buying this game.

So in the end this is a 3D platformer with a really solid base, but it just needed more time to cook. Its sad to say but I think Ice Age Meltdown on PS2 is a much better game then this. That game had a lot more polish and a lot more of the Ice Age charm, which this game is lacking quite a bit. But again that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It was a fun run through and I can recommend it if you also grew up with the PS2 game and like 3D platformers in general. But if you’re looking for a really good platformer, I would recommend ignoring this game and buy any of the others on Switch like Super Mario Odyssey

Some manage to make their film a portable game, others fail miserably, which is the opposite of the game I will talk about today, Scrat’s nutty adventure.
Scrat’s nutty adventure is an extraordinary game, for several reasons, which I will quote below. First, the game revolutionizes the genre of the platform game by introducing new original mechanics, such as being able to attract objects with our protagonist, which allows the game to combine puzzle and platforming wonderfully
In addition, the protagonist and antagonists are very diverse and charismatic, while remaining easily identifiable.
Despite the many advantages I have just demonstrated, the game has more than one trick in its bag. For example, textures are of an incredible quality, while remaining simple and concrete. There is no shortage of diverse environments. Glacier, forest, so many environments never seen before bringing a breeze of fresh air in the world of video games
To conclude this text summarizing this extraordinary game, I want to remind you that it is not every day that we see a game of such eloquent quality, so enjoy this unique experience.
I would like to dedicate this text to antony , who gave me the idea to write this incredible text and who supported me financially and morally throughout this tedious project.
