I've been about 3 hours in and so far the controls are awful, combat is beyond abhorrent, there is no way to evade or get to a safe spot, the tight sequences and parts where you have to be quick and agile are screwed beyond belief because of how awful the controls are and you virtually can't do anything to fight back except move around at the speed of your regular walking speed which is very sluggish and pray to god that you don't get hit, because there's no learning curve, there is no skill involved, it is all inhuman evading mechanics aimed at people who literally cannot get mad at a game as unfair and unfun to play as this one is.

This is a laggy buggy freaking mess with unavoidable attack. I won't recommend this game to anyone, if you want a hard but fair 2d game go get cuphead instead at LEAST you won't get fk over because the enemies stun lock you to death or the control give up middle of a fight.

I'm not sure what isn't to like about this game. The atmosphere is amazing, the story is fantastically told through the background, and the combat is superb. The ending sticks with you even after you put the game down. The combat is precise and challenging. Any mistakes made are the players fault and instantly recognizable. One of the best 2D games out and it's at home on the Switch. A+

My absolute highlight of Hollow Knight is the very creative way that the story is told by Team Cherry through the use of NPCs, lore tablets and other whispers throughout the kingdom, leaving the player with a giant web of loosely connected strands to string together in their own way. I just created an account to rate this game.

Hollow Knight is truly exceptional, from the art style, to the music, the challenge, the lore, the gameplay, the size of the enormous interconnected world. When I read that this game was made by such few people I really asked myself what the big studios are doing sometimes, when such a superior product can be made with so little resources.
I just created an account to rate this game.

When I read that this game was made by such few people I really asked myself what the big studios are doing sometimes, when such a superior product can be made with so little resources.

Like I mentioned almost all aspects of Hollow Knight feel polished, especially the jumping and use of the weapon, which starts out pretty simple, but along the way you find many spells and abilities, that perfectly enhance your arsenal to conquer formerly unreachable paths and areas.
The enemies are plenty and diverse and really interesting, because of the bug theme which may seem strange at first but is one of the biggest pros, because it's so different from other games. I also have to mention the backgrounds of the areas which are so different and alive that you can't even compare it to similar games, it is just on another level.

I don't normally do this and I am sorry for the comparison, but this is one case where it fits: The game is definitely soulslike. The benches in the game serve as the bonfires, that are often times pretty far stretched out, but through shortcuts (which are very cleverly used) and later on increased mobility, become reachable much faster.
The difficulty is also pretty high, but most of the really challenging stuff is optional and if you take you're time you'll overcome them eventually and get a great sense of accomplishment. The bosses are also a highlight, the start pretty ordinary as bigger better versions of normal enemies, but quickly become unique challenges that often yield great rewards. If you die you'll loose your in-game currency, but you can reclaim it by getting back to the spot and defeating "your shadow".

A small con is that sometimes you may not exactly know where to go and while it encourages exploration it can also be bit frustrating at times (like darksouls) ;).
That is no problem tho because if you're really stuck you can look at the online resources and find the way immediately.

To this date 4 FREE content dlcs have been released to this mind you already massive game for 15 euros (which is already so underpriced it's ridiculous). I am not done with the story yet (20 hours in) and I'll play them when I'm done with it, but I've heard positive things from the dlcs and already look forward to them.

All in all the pros far outhweight the cons and from all the triple A and indie games I've played in the last 15 years (a ton, almost all major ones) this indie game is one that definitely deserves the 10, if you like the art style and the gameplay from reviews or gameplay pictures, just get it you're in for a treat :)

It starts out mildly challenging with some challenge, but the more you unlock your abilities. The number of enemies goes up, but the challenge goes up as well. This is what I am talking about with big budget games like GOW and Spider Man. Sure, they got big budgets and graphics, but they don't have as much game play as games like Hollow Knights and Dead Cell. You get more game play value and replay ability from those two games than most of these so called AAA games.

I suppose the game may have some minor memory leaks which in most cases have no real life impact, but seeing as I had essentially never closed the game since starting it, i.e. about 15 hours in, the lag started being really problematic, especially in large rooms or in boss fights. With a fresh boot it plays great.

As good as the game is, I do have a few gripes about it. I find the fast travel stations are spaced a bit too far from one another, making tedious backtracking often necessary. Save benches are often far from bosses, which makes slogging through a bunch of rooms to get to said boss fight repetitive and boring. The benches are also a bit too rare for my taste, and I've often missed the rooms where the benches are and ended up playing for over an hour without saving. I've also often managed to miss the map guy and spent many hours walking around in areas trying to figure out the lay of the land. I would prefer to find the map guy and a bench pretty quickly in each area and then get to exploring, instead of the other way around.

The game has a ridiculous amount of content, and for the price it's definitely worth a check, especially for fans of Metroidvania.

This is not a metroidvania. IT's a Dark Souls as a 2D platformer. Awful game, with so many bad design choices that it has to be bad on purpose. I don't recommend anybody to play it. Visually is one of the ugliest games I've ever played. It feels like a student game, or some amateur game, definitely somebody with zero experience in game development. One of the worst games I've played this year.

I really enjoyed the exploration of the game, and it's pretty open quite early on. There is a fair amount of excitement when you get a new ability and can reach previously inaccessible areas.

But, the game is not fun. I love challenge in a game; I even completed the Bloodborne Chalice Dungeons, and I've completed every Souls game from Demon souls onwards, I don't mind taking my time and learning attack patterns / practice. But it's a real shame that the Hollow Knight designers have opted for some lazy artificial difficulty in most situations rather than actually designing. For example, most bosses only have a couple of attacks, but have so much health that you may well lose due to making a mistake because of the sheer length of time a fight can take. At another point, you fight a previous enemy again, only they are twice as fast. Another example is that some of the platforming sections require 10+ perfectly executed jumps with no save option anywhere along the way. This is made more frustrating as there is a slight delay in the game responding to jump inputs. The game also expects a whole lot of grinding to purchase necessary upgrades to open some paths.

The game also doesn't value it's players time. As an adult who works most of the time, backtracking for 2-5 mins to get back to a boss or a painful platforming section is simply not acceptable in a modern game. The save points are few and far between, and there is no way of travelling between them, instead you have to rely on a separate transit system.

i guess my final complaint is that they've just missed the mark. If you've ever played Salt & Sanctuary, a Soulsborne, Metroidvania styled platformer with a fantastic world, factions and a brilliant upgrade system. As such, playing Hollow Knight feels like it falls short on every bar, except possibly the world itself, which is great.

TLDR: Lots of promise but not worth your time. Play Salt and Sanctuary, does everything better from the platforming to the world to the combat.

A very good game with beautiful locations, nice sense of progression and some challenging parts. Unfortunately, it has rough spots that could use some polishing.

The recurring problem with the game is the designers' love for the mechanics that make the game more annoying. Not hard - annoying.

One of the examples would be the fixed save point system (bench). You have to use those benches to save the game. They double as a respawn when you die. The problem is, there is not enough of them in the game or they are placed at weird places. Oftentimes when approaching the boss the closest bench is few locations away, usually separated by some enemies or obstacles that result in the loss of life.

Another example is death. When you die, you leave a shade behind - which keeps your gold and a part of your soul meter ("mana" used for spells and healing) pool. If you die again, the previous shade is gone (with your gold). Killing a shade restores soul meter.

Those two show how approaching a boss can be frustrating. Not only does your journey to the boss takes some time (and if the boss is tough - which some are - it can take multiple tries, meaning wasted time). It also makes every next try more annoying - you either suck it up and play harder version(because you can't collect maximum soul without killing your shade, which is at the boss) or kill the shade, go back to collect soul (this often means going back to the save point), and then approach it again. Again, nothing harder about the game itself.

Same with the money mechanic - you can force the mobs to spawn, so earning money is tiresome, not hard. Losing it is another chore. Fortunately, late-game money is not useful anymore so you don't have to worry about that.

The levels are beautiful. There are many different zones and they all feel great. Each of them has unique setting or mechanic. Attention to detail is really praiseworthy. Music blends nicely with levels. Every part feels like a well designed piece of a whole. Some of the parts are locked off until you get certain mechanic, so you get to re-visit some of those locations.

Talking about game mechanics, these are also well done. You enable "special powers" throughout the game. Every new skill means access to new locations and often helps in combat. This means that progress feels good and natural.

Unfortunately, the very same progress can come to halt with no help. As I do not like using any sort of guides, I spent few times "scanning" the entire map - going through all the places - looking for any place where I could go, because I didn't know what to do next. This is a good thing, as I am not spoon-fed the directions, but something as simple as the "to-do list" with multiple things to do could point me in the right direction.

The charm system is also good - you can equip different charms(and combinations of thereof) to make certain play styles more powerful.

Despite its flaws it's a great game. Not the best out there, some of the rough parts are undeniable, but pretty damn good and definitely a must have for metroidvania fans.

I found Elderbug amusing, Myla the cute miner fun to visit, Quirrel dashing and informative, and the (hopefully soon to be a playable character) Hornet challenging and all-aware.
Learning the map and discovering new areas without hand-holding was refreshing. I felt like I was building my own world through exploring and DS2 reached areas I hadn't within the first three hours.
There are limited slots to use power-ups, and choosing what to take and what to deactivate proves difficult in the early game.
The add-on content boosts the interesting finds and activities that occur in dirtmouth and in many other locations. The Dream Nail means there's additional text from characters and collection challenges. A very hard challenge awaits in the Grimm Troupe tent, The godmaster add-on has just come out!
Finally, the price point was superb - SO MUCH GAME for under £10. Truly special - this game will continue to be played by me for hours and will probably remain in the top ten switch downloads for months to come!

The health recharge system is clever but you have to stand perfectly still to get the build up to start. This makes it almost pointless during close quarters combat where there is no real opportunity to use it. The map system is useless, requiring you to travel a very long way back to a shop just to get the proper map for a new area. The dark souls inspired "recovering souls after death" mechanic is utterly pointless. I'm really not sure why they included it. The graphics are very "00s flash game", not at all the inspired art style a lot of reviews seem to describe. I'm sure as more abilities unlock the game will get better but that doesn't justify what is a very poor opening 4 hours which is giving me no real incentive to carry on. Overall, I recommend this game to any Switch owner looking to drown themselves for hours in the world of Hollownest, because I sure did and enjoyed every minute of it.

Unfortunately I found this to largely all be undermined by the games design and the way that it never offers any clue as to where you should be going next. Every time you enter a new area you have to find an NPC before you gain access to the map, finding this NPC can often be a time consuming and frustrating experience as without the map navigating the similar looking areas successfully is all bit impossible. The problems don’t end there either, even once you find the map it’s still not clear which of the many directions available you’ll be able to traverse without unlocking additional powers. There is no real fast travelling from most areas either and check points (rest stations) are often spaced relatively far apart and dieing, which will happen quite often, means spending even more time repeating areas to get back to where you was. I’m all for games that don’t try to hold your hand but I played Hollow Knight for 6-7 hours before giving up and I’d estimate at least 4 of those hours were spent wandering around just trying to work out where I was supposed to be going!!

There is much to admire about this title but in the end it was all just too frustrating.

It's not perfect but it has so much work and affection put into the development that it deserves a 10.
The last game that caught me so much was before playing Hollow Knight was Breath of the Wild.
Two masterpieces in all its artistic sections.

Switch release makes the game even better and adds more from the PC. The 3D rumble gives a feel to the game and makes it feel more atmospheric. Note that this is coming from a player that has gotten all the achievements. Play the game and see for yourself.

P.S. most negative reviews of this game come from players who have not experienced the full game and gotten used to its mechanics.

I listen to several video game podcasts and every one of them discussed how tremendous this game is. I like Metroidvanias so I decided to look it up. The art style immediately piqued my interest and the more I heard about how stunning this game is, the more I wanted to play it. I must say, this game lives up to the hype!As with other Metroidvanias, Hollow Knight is a side scrolling platformer. As you clear out one area, you gain abilities that grant access to other areas. Often times, as you gain new abilities, you will have to go back to previously cleared areas to unlock more skills or strengthen existing ones. One feature that is new to the genre is that when you die, you drop all of your coins which are called Geo in this game. In addition, some of your items may break when you die and need to be repaired in order to use them again. You can go back and retrieve your lost Geo by defeating your spirit at the location you died. If you are unable to make it to and defeat your spirit, you lose all Geo. This is a feature similar to that found in the Dark Souls games.
The game is broken down into different areas. In each area, you will find a cartographer named Cornifier. You can purchase a map of each area from him. He will also tell you that you can buy items to enhance the map from his shop in the small town of DIrtmouth. Two items worth purchasing from his shop are the quill, which will highlight all sections in a region you have actually been in, and the Wayward Compass. The compass does take up one of your item nodes, but is well worth it because the maps do not have a “You are here” indicator on them. The compass fills that role.
The combat system is rather simple, but effective. You can slash your nail (remember you play as an insectoid so a nail to a bug is like a sword to a human) left, right, up and while you are airborne in the down direction as well. The enemies vary in degree of difficulty from simple mobs to bosses with intricate movement patterns.
In general, this is not only one of the most difficult platformers I have ever played, it is one of the most difficult games that I have ever played period. The developers did a superb job of making Hollow Knight challenging, but not aggravating. The graphical style in Hollow Knight may not be for everyone, but there is brilliance in it nonetheless. They may be cartoony, but they are very well drawn. I think they animated appearance fits well in a game featuring insectoids and ghosts. Each area features a different base color where the background, the foreground, the enemies and the ground are almost entirely in different shades of that base color. You can notice when you are transitioning to another area because the tones may go from a blueish hue to one that is green. It adds to the charm of the game well. The color of each area matches that areas color after you buy the map for it. Little details like that show the level of care that was put into this game. Despite this being a 2D game, there is depth added by having backgrounds at different layers that move as the character does. This gives the feeling of a quasi-3D game. The lighting, textures and focuses all add to the overall aesthetic separating Hollow Knight from other games in this genre.
The musical arrangements and sound effects pair terrifically with the what is happening in the game. Normally, I notice the music in a game, but it doesn’t normally make me pay attention to it. In Hollow Knight, the sound enhances the overall gameplay experience. It helps draw the player into the overall experience. Each area of the map has it’s own unique music, which combines with the change in color palette during area transitions perfectly. This game features some of the most situationally appropriate music I have ever heard in a game. The somber tones of one area often become frantic during a boss fight. Another audio feature I like in Hollow Knight is the nonsensical noises that NPCs make when you talk to them. It may be gibberish, but it fits perfectly.Hollow Knight is a fantastic game. In fact, it may be the second best game I have played on the Nintendo Switch after Breath of the Wild. I give a 5/5 for stunning graphics, unique audio and gameplay that is an absolute blast! It is available on Nintendo Switch and PC, so if you game on either one, I highly recommend playing it.

The first couple of hours were a bit rough. You feel weighed down by the fact that you don't have much mobility and don't know where to go. But as soon as you get the compass and start having a sense of direction, the game picks up speed.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this game. My only drawbacks are the slow start and the fact that most of the story is very vaguely told. The universe is interesting, and the journey throughout the game is
very enjoyable, but it can be hard to put the pieces of the story together without reading a bit on the wiki for the game.

and before yall go clicking away because this is a metroidvania.. I get it.. I don’t like metroidvanias either..
Bit I fell in love with hollow knight..
The first couple hours of this game is brutal..
you hop down the well and its sink or swim… youre killing these little bug creatures exploring the areas you can with oyur initial abilities.. and the game is just chewing you up and spitting you back out to the last bench you rested on..
this feels like a 2d dark souls game while youre getting the hand of things, helped by the fact that if you die you drop all of the cash you’ve collected along the way.. to get it back you have to defeat the ghost version of you…
thankfully though hollow knight does difficulty right,
This game isn’t unfair, it isn’t annoying.. its challenging in a genuine and addictive way..
it forces you to learn its rules, learn the patterns of the creatures that surrounds you.. it slowly builds you up.. makes you stronger throughout your journey of uncovering secrets, unlocking new moves and abilities.. slaying bosses.. and exploring this forgotten kingdom.
Every area here feels so different despite simultaneously feeling connected, they all have their own adorable little enemies that are out to drain your soul, little caterpillar worm creatures for you to save, bosses and secrets to enhance your stats or abilities..
This is such a special risk and reward game, collecting coins, attacking enemies to gain some soul juice to heal yourself and push forward inching closer to the next checkpoint, or trying to travel to the closest fast travel area to go spend your hard earned money on a new upgrade or map…
and exploring the world is such a thrull from start to finish… I felt an urge to see it all, despite the game trying its hardest to stop me with its challenging platforming and enemy encounters..
I couldn’t believe how deeply I fell in love with hollow knight.. pun intended…
this is by far the best metroidvania game ive ever played.. and every gamer type should give this game a chance at least until its first boss battle.. it was then that I fell in love.. its then when I realized how special of a ride I was about to go on..
    I give Hollow Knight

One of the best indie games on the Switch. I would certainly give a description of what it contains, but anything might spoil the experience. Just know that it's one of the best Metroidvanias ever, and while it's certainly not an easy game, the difficulty is fair enough. Also, $15 is a steal for a game like this!

The progress in this game is hindered by long sessions of trying to find where to go next, mostly because the map system is blunt and uninspired, areas have barely any distinctive look and visual cue of direction and, god, it feels like there is no music or sound in this game.

Remember Symphony of the Night? Super Metroid? these games that will make you get lost eventually (not in the first 2 hours of the game though) but you won't mind getting lost, since your are listening to a marvelous soundtrack and the map is not a time waster. Hollow knight on the other hand is a 15 min period of fun fighting new monsters or a boss and then you're back to trying to figure out where to go in boring monochromatic mazes with no music to back you up.

I do realize the game is moody and atmospherical, but that doesn't makes it fun. It was a really bad choice for such a long game.

DO NOT get discouraged if you get lost or don't know what's going on in the game even after 10-15 hours of gameplay! That's normal, the story is a puzzle that you need to put together by talking to characters and exploring.

    The Music:
The soundtrack for the game is phenomenal and really adds to the entire experience. For each section of the dungeon we hear a unique song that just really sets the mood for the user. In some areas I feel relaxed despite having enemies attack me but as I travel deeper into Hallownest the music will feel more intense and I feel my nerves creeping up on me to the point of borderline fear.

    Artwork:
Hollow Knight reminds you that simple can be beautiful. it's funny that the main character is very cartoon-ish and so are many of the other characters, but for some odd reason when they place these strange looking cartoony bodies onto the backdrop it becomes beautiful.

    Gameplay:
Your character feels about as fluid with his movements as water. There is no such thing as a mis-input in this game, 30 hours in and I have never complained that the character did something that I didn't want him to or that he didn't do something that I wanted him to. Oh and the game balances fun and challenge very well between the puzzles and enemies.

    Final Recommendation:
Hollow Knight is a masterpiece of the genre and almost anyone would love it. Having said that, Hollow Knight is a challenging game and although I would basically recommend it to anyone, I would not recommend it to very inexperienced gamers or people who enjoy Easy Mode gaming. The game has one difficulty but it's the perfect difficulty, it gets harder as you get better and I really like that.

It is clear that Team Cherry was able to focus on aesthetics beyond just gameplay and created something really special to be celebrated for years to come.

Although it has sold decently and it is now picking more momentum with the Switch release, it is still rather underrated and deserves more publicity and recognition. I rate it above some awesome (if different) games I played in the last year like Zelda BOTW, Super Mario Odyssey, Cuphead, Axiom Verge. Only God of War satisfied me as much, if in different ways.

its mechanics, control, difficulty, graphics and sound are sensibly magnificent.
It boasts a quality and a waste of talent on the part of Team Cherry exceptional.

highly recommended for those who like challenges.

and in a subjective manner. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting video games that I have played with a very disturbing lore at the same time fascinating.

I would give a 10 but I will be fair and here the objective part has.

it has very few defects like the fact that it gets to have certain bugs like in the second battle against Hornet where if you apply the spiral attack (Technique of the stinger) against it the game will close saying that an unexpected failure occurred)

out of that detail everything is superb and beautiful.

congratulations Team Cherry for this gem.

Very frustrating game. I couldn't even get going as I got lost and then once I found a map I next needed a compass. I can explore but want a map, I am not some waiter who memorizes orders.

    Pros:
    - Looked nice and the controls felt fine

    Cons:
    - Lack of map
    - Lack of compass

Exploration is complemented by tight combat and platforming mechanics. The game oozes immersive atmosphere through it's charming art style, vague lore, and ambient music. Reflecting on my 25 hour experience, any gripes i had were few and far between. Although my experience was rewarding and memorable, be forewarned, the casual gamer may not find this experience enjoyable.

Hollowknight's mechanics leave every mistake at the players fault. The player is put in control of a nameless knight. From the start, the knight has the ability to run, jump, attack in four directions (left, right, up, and down while airborne), and utilize "soul" to heal. Jumping isn't dictated like most platformers. Rather than having a short jump and a high jump, the height of jumping isn't restricted to binary. Jump height is totally varied based on how long the button is held, allowing for tight platforming sections to be in complete control of the player. The knight wields a nail. Which is a sword for insects. Attacks are executed near instant and have knock back on contact. Attacking an enemy downward while airborne, if timed properly, allows the knight to bounce consecutively with each successful hit. This downward attack also makes for interesting platforming sections where the knight must bounce off of spikes and other hazards to progress. As mentioned above, the knight could also heal through "soul". Soul is essentially a magic meter that charges when the knight lands attacks on enemies. To heal, the knight must create a safe distance as healing takes a few seconds and could be interrupted by enemy attacks. This allows for a satisfying 'risk-reward' system where the player must decide if they will heal or sneak in more damage. The combination of these mechanics (and mechanics you gain throughout your adventure) makes for excellent exploration and intense boss fights.

Checkpoints in this game are benches. At benches the player has the option to switch up charms, which give bonus abilities such as a longer sword or faster attack execution. Switching charms is restricted to benches, so it is important make sure your load out matches what your next goal may be. The amount of charms the knight can equip is dictated by notches which are found throughout the adventure. It is possible to equip more charms than the notches allow, but doing so will put the knight in an over charmed state which causes enemies to deal double damage. When you (inevitably) die, you are returned to the last bench you rested at. Upon returning to a bench after death, the knights max soul is lowered, all geo (currency) is lost, and a 'shade' is left behind. Max soul and geo can be regained by returning to the death location and defeating the shade but beware, if the shade is not defeated and the knight dies before reaching it, the geo is permanently lost.

Exploration is at the forefront of this adventure. Hollowknight starts off a bit linear, but quickly branches off into a perplexing cavern of secrets and danger. As the player explores and defeats bosses, the knight gains new abilities such as a dash and a wall jump. These abilities allow progress in exploration and access to areas that at one point were inaccessible. For example, you may come across an acidic lake that can only be traversed after you obtain a certain ability. Once you gain the ability, the game doesn't hold your hand on what to do with it. It's up to the player to remember the acidic lake that is now cross able thanks to the knights new found power. This aspect of exploration is extremely rewarding. Exploration is also rewarded with a seemingly endless amount of secrets, which are a joy to discover. Each new area leaves you exploring without a map until you stumble upon the cartographer NPC Cornifer. Cornifer will sell you a map of the area for a reasonable amount of geo. It can be frustrating to explore an area without a map, but thankfully Cornifer leaves a trail of feathers and has audio ques notifying the player as to when they are close to his location.

The art style Team Cherry chose is both dark and adorable simultaneously. The world is populated by insects who at times are aloof and at others arrogant (but are always charming). The backgrounds are detailed and lovingly crafted, while also doing a wonderful job differentiating the games diverse areas. The ambient music and sound design only adds to the polish and immersion. Though the music while exploring is mostly somber, the music while fighting a boss is triumphant and epic, which at time left me with chills and excitement.

Hollowknight has little hand holding and the 'risk-reward' based challenge isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for a memorable odyssey, look no further.

Hollow Knight is fantastic and it is absolutely a must play on the Nintendo Switch. It is is a metroidvania + dark souls sort of game. For just $14.99, it is completely worth it in anyone's library. The game is definitely challenging, but never unfair. The times you die in game is either the mistake(s) you made or you are not familiar with the rhythm of the challenges yet.

If you like platformers and Metroidvania-style games, this is one of the very best to be released in recent memory. I waited to pick it up for the Switch, as I like many other folks are drawn to sinking in the time on the switch version because of the portability. If you haven't played metroidvania-types before, the games are founded on a progression system that slowly but dramatically improves your mobility and combat skills while allowing access to areas - most of which are interconnected - as you obtain new skills.

The combat and platforming is incredibly tight. The variety in skills and customization afforded by the crest system is deep and satisfying to experiment with. Boss battles are varied and intense; difficult but fair. Enemy and area variety are exemplary.

What makes this metroidvania so special, besides the excellent execution of the fundamentals, is the art style, world development, and Darksouls inspired story-telling and emphasis on pattern-learning to progress past certain enemies and bosses.

The game has some difficult bosses and platforming sequences especially with optional bosses and collectible items like the Grubs that are scattered across the enormous map. But nothing feels cheap and the game never gates progression behind particularly difficult content.

Also cheers to Team Cherry for their persistent support of the game with meaningful patches and free DLC. True mark of an earnest and well-intentioned developer.

The game, unlike other ports, seems to run just as well on Switch as on PC. I guess the resolution could be higher (I'm playing on a 1440p monitor) but I believe it is constant 1080p and 60fps as I haven't noticed any slowdown. Loading times are also negligible.

There isn't a ton to criticize here. I wish the player-map-icon functionality wasn't necessarily tied to the charm system. I have over 30 hours in the game and probably another 5 or so to go before 100%. I did find myself wandering around and backtracking a good deal. You get map icons later in the game that help in locating items and essence sources but without a map from the web and/or a solid plan on what you want to do, it's easy to get a little lost and 'waste' time not getting anything done. It can be frustrating but it's a small price to pay for a cunning and expansive map rife with secret passages, whole areas, short-cuts, hidden items, and bosses.

The combat again is impressive. It starts out so simple but by the end of the game you have an impressive tool-belt and loads of customization options. Adding to the satisfying combat is the sound effects and music. I remember when I first started the game being impressed with the muffling of sound that occurs when the knight takes a hit; kinda like have your bell rung. It added a weight to the combat that persisted and grew throughout the game. The music is similarly well-composed and the voice effects of the NPCs are downright infectious ('ba-pa-nada').

I can't believe how cheap this game is too. $60 would not be absurd for how much quality time one can spend with this game. They are charging $15.

If this game even piques your curiosity, buy it. One of my favorite Switch titles and second only to BotW in terms of hours logged. Team Cherry puts Australia on the map for game development and I'm looking forward to what those folks have in store for us in the coming years.

I found the challenge here to be gimmicky at best, with cheap mid-boss enemies, damage model based on hits and touches by enemies and awkward controls/platforming made even worse on the Switch thanks to the Joy-Cons.

You start with a little guy that has 1 attack (3, if you count directional attacks as well) , a heal spell and a jump. That's it. No block, no dash/evade, no way to avoid getting hit and as I've mentioned getting touched means getting hit. The enemies are very agile and have a long reach, you yourself are very small and cover a short area, which leads to a lot of cases where you are being hit while trying to hit.

In short, the combat is abhorrent!

There is no learning curve like what you had in the Souls games, where if you could overcome a difficult enemies/sequence you could get past it by learning from mistakes, learning new moves and strategies. There's none of the here, as the game is very straight forward.

The platforming is probably the worst offender, it has this this awful downward attack that you have to use to get through some parts which is a pain to archive on the Joy-con. Add to that tight jumping sequences where you are harassed by enemies you cant avoid...

Some enemies respawn while you rest at a bench, others respawn if you exit an area, making making it feel very inconsistent. The area maps that you have to purchase, which is incomplete when you buy it, also updates new areas you've been through while resting at a bench.

You have to grind your ass off to buy basic game mechanics, like maps, map pins, etc.

Overall I think this game tries so hard to be a 2D souls but falls flat due to all of the above, instead being nothing more than an over hyped poor attempt with pretty aesthetics.

As it is, the game is unplayable and enjoyable without a scale back on the difficulty, maybe with a easy mode added.

If you're looking for a Souls like, you won't find it in Hollow Knight. I strongly recommend waiting for Dark Souls Remastered or Dead Cells, both out later this year.

For 15 bucks this game is a steal, I honestly think it should have been 30 or more, for its quality, expansive world, and thrill. This game was an instant buy for myself, and many others, so obviously many think this is a must buy game, and I fully agree.

first ever Metroidvania game I ever played and I was astonished by the visuals, the gameplay, and the depth this game has. I would price a game like this at 40+ dollar and somehow it only costs 15$

Striking enemies recharges your soul meter that you can use to heal, so even when low on health you are inclined to fight on, which makes for some exciting moments when you are lost and low on health in some uncharted area. For a metriodvania game it is also surprisingly non-linear and big. I would definitely recommend Hollow Knight if you like platformer/metroidvania games. Expand

I've waited over a year for the Switch-Version, after a friend played it on PC and sang his highest praises. It was absolutely worth the wait.

Im about 20h in and the game runs perfectly smooth (not one-hickup or input-lag so far!) and is simply a perfect fit for the portability and the grab-and-go playstyle of the Nintendo Switch.

At the same time it offers a deeply lored and vast mysterious world that inspires wonder and has SO much to discover, I've not been able to put it down in a week now. The lore is sprinkled over Hallownest in a very subtle way (I get Dark Souls vibes here), making it a joy to unravel and seek every last hint on what went down in the lost kingdom a long time ago.

The art is just gorgeous too, boasting a vaguely Ghibli style of drawing that manages to look cute and beautiful yet sometimes gives you chills down your spine when you fight for your survival in the deepest darkest parts of the game.
The soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in years and captures both the eerily lonely feeling of abandoned cities as well as the blink-of-a-moment thrill of a needle-duel with a boss.
Also last but not least, the sound mixing is done incredibly well, giving your sense of movement and strength a big boost as every hit, every step and every dash feels real and powerful.

I’m The Flannel Fox Tim Swiernik and I reviewed Hollow Knight on the Nintendo Switch

Beginning in Dirtmouth a small village above the Hallownest’s Ruins with nothing but your trusty nail by your side your adventure begins. With a blind leap into the ruins of an abandoned world.

In the beginning of the game you can only jump, melee attack with your nail, and regain health with your soul. As you defeat enemies you gain soul, when you hold down the A button Hollow Knight can charge back health.

This simple health recharge mechanic is so potent that it forces you to take risks in order to continue. Where in a normal game if you are low on health, you would turn around and go looking for some or return to your closest regen point. However, in Hollow Knight you are drawn to battle, with one hit left in your health if you pull off the perfect attacks you can be back to full health in no time at all. There are so many moments, where you will assess the situation, pause for a moment, then run into battle knowing that one hit could be your last.

Hollow Knight is a 2d metroidvania and one of the so called souls-like games, referring to the awesomely brutal gameplay in From Software’s Darksouls, Demonsouls, and Bloodborn. This shows itself in the many different systems in Hollow Night. For example while on your journey you are collecting geo, the games’ currency, if you die your geo is gone until you find your Shade, after defeat it to regain all that you have earned.

Another reason this is a souls-like, is the brutally different encounters with npcs among the world. When exploring this beautifully grim environment, I try to be careful when moving into a new area as death is lurking around every single corner. When faced with a difficult foe you must learn their attack patterns, which can often take multiple lives doing so, in order to come out on top. Forcing you to get good and to get good fast, it’s so rewarding defeating a boss that kills you so many times, but even more rewarding to encounter that enemy again later in game, and conquering them with ease. Not because you’ve leveled up or gotten a new weapon, which you do not do in this game, but because you have gotten better as a player.

Being a 2d metroidvania, as you play through the game you unlock new abilities that grant you access do different parts of the map. This being my first playthrough of the game, I truly knew nothing about it and did not know which mechanics were going to be introduced. That being said it took me about five hours to stumble upon the wall slide/wall jump, which was thrilling. One of my favorite 2d mechanics after playing super meat boy, this turned a game with incredibly challenging combat, into a cleverly difficult 2d platformer. Dashing and wall jumping through thorn covered areas, gave me a huge grin on my face almost immediately, and waiting this long into the game to introduce it made the reveal all worth the wait. Travelling back to an area in the beginning of a game that you remember specifically when you saw it the first time, then having that lightbulb moment when you get the perfect ability to now go there, is one of the best feelings in gaming and it will never gets old.

Each area of the map is broken up into little sections or worlds, but in order to view them on your map you must purchase that area’s map from Cornifier the Cartographer. Not knowing where to find him multiple times in new ares was getting quite frustrating until you begin to hear some faint humming, then you see his papers on the ground, letting you know that he’s close and you find him to purchase that areas map.

Along with having to purchase a map, you have to purchase the ability to locate yourself on the map, as well as fast travel points, resting benches, and basically everything that is on a normal map. Not being a big fan of this as spending my hard earned Geo to be able to see blue cocoons on my map, felt like a waste of my money.

Hollow Knight is an amazing 2d metroidvania and a challenging platformer, will fantastically brutal combat that certainly scratches that souls like itch. Just as often as I would stumble into a deadly boss battle, I would be rewarded with amazing moments of discovery, accomplishment, and victory. I can solidly recommend this game to any Switcher who is up for a great challenge.

For contrast, I fully rage quit a couple of times on Axiom Verge, and went to play something else for a while, but I haven't picked up another game since getting Hollow Knight.

Best indie game EVER, and one of the best 2D games to date. It blends Metroidvania with Dark Souls in a challenging and lengthy masterpiece. Beautiful, dark artstyle and melancholic music add to create a very desolate atmosphere. It's no doubt a 10/10 game, and it's a steal for the price. I can only hope this becomes a full blown series of games.

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
