In this game when you die you loose all your money and have to make it back to where you died to get it back. This mechanic is AWFUL. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm debating quitting the game just because of how terrible this mechanic is.

When I first saw anything from Hollow Knight I was intrigued by the art style, I'd heard good things online and wanted to go in blind, so I did.

My initial experience with Hollow Knight was one of feeling lost. I ended up in the Forgotten Crossroads not knowing what to do or where to go, I didn't have a map, a dash a double jump, I had a short weapon and no sense of direction. In all honesty, I didn't like it, combat seemed too simple and the feeling of being totally lost with no objective made me feel alienated from the world, I had a hard time feeling invested in the world which I knew nothing about.

After an hour or so about meandering about I found my way to the False Knight, the boss of the zone and killed them with no real difficulty and decided to push on, I was close to giving up on the game at this point, but there were things I could see and places that looked interesting so I continued.

I'm so so glad I did, the scenery went from bland and desolate to a lush green forested area filled with lots of tiny crumbs of lore and world-building, that made me want to know more, after fighting the second boss I was sure I wanted to finish it to see what was going on, I was interested in the story but still unsure about the gameplay.

Until I reached the Mantis Lords. This was the moment the gameplay clicked for me. The patterns weren't hard but they were fast. It was the first real roadblock in the game, it took me a while to beat it but I felt great when I did. That is what every boss fight felt like from then on, Tough but rewarding.

A few things that I haven't mentioned yet.

The soundtrack is breathtaking. Every zone has background music that fits it perfectly, From the calm tracks in Queens Garden and Greenpath to the flat-out creepy ambiance in Darknest nothing was out of place. The Boss themes were something else altogether. Without going too deep into music theory I'm just going to suggest you watch 8-Bit music theory's youtube videos on it, I feel It truly made me appreciate the sheer amount of thought that Christopher Larkin put into making the music.
The story is given to you through the environment and interactables in the world, and there is a LOT of story to unpack, if you're looking for it, quite a few friends of mine were unsure what was going on at the end of the game and went back to find out. A good youtube channel to check out if you're in the same boat is Mossbag.

Hollow Knight is my favorite game of all time. I got it on offer and I felt like I ripped the developers off. I would have felt the same way if I paid full price.

What upsets me most about the reviews on here is the fact that so many people give the game negative reviews. It's understandable though I almost never got to the parts which made the game click for me. For me that's the only thing that missed the mark, you're supposed to feel lost because you are, You're supposed to feel weak at first because you are, and that's not quite for everyone, If you can get over it you are in for one of, if not, the best gaming experience you're going to have for a long while.

If I could have any wish granted it is that I could forget ever playing Hollow Knight so I can experience it all again for the first time.

Excellent game overall. I love the soundtrack, characters, animations and all of the lore. This game feels very closed off when you first start but as you progress you become more mobile and it really helps open up a lot of areas. My only criticism of this game is that the platforming can be tedious and some of the bosses can feel unforgiving. However I expected that in a metroidvania.

This is by far one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life. The game itself starts with no more the jump and hit. It feels like you're really weak and that's the beauty of the game. Every single 'upgrade' you get, you feel much stronger.
The game is huge, there are five endings and should you want to see them all, you have to get good. I spent easily more than 200 hours and I still didn't finish it all.
Play it only if you're not afraid of spending hours trying to defeat a single boss.

Easily manages to catch the player looking for a good adventure and many hours of fun. The skills, collectibles and equipment, in addition to being linked to the story, help the player to want to keep playing more and more until reaching the protagonist's full skill.
The different styles of play are very efficient and very challenging, ranging from a simple parkour to a complex boss rush.
As the player continues to learn more and more about the game's history, he ends up delving deeper into the universe, making choices that shape the future of characters and change the lives of others.
The ''New Game+'', in addition to changing some things in the game, leaves a huge concern for the player, who will be able to pass depending on how much effort he made in his first game.
Hollow Knight is a perfect example of how to make a good game with beautiful art and a cohesive story worth reading, and it's well worth your while to wait for the sequel.

Hollow Knight here is just a mix of badly executed stuff put into a Castlevania skeleton - besides visual design, as I mentioned before. But let's be honest: for a game that cheap, what one should expect of great, right?
Your character is incapable of doing the basics any other character would in the same conditions/other titles, consequently making the combat system a big pain fest: a genuine showcase of how one should not develop a metroidvania game. Things get worse when you see every hit landed turning out as a big fireworks performance, thus affecting negatively your view by occluding important details and delaying key actions players should take.
Because wow, designing a great and slow-going fireworks performance every hit is the ideal when you deal with an ARPG. Why not? Why they should fight under a fluid combat system with modest effects and decent movements? Meh. Unfortunately, as combat is a core mechanic that's a big letdown, making this side of the game feel both tedious and a painful experience. Dealing with bosses? Good luck, I can't see how worse then could design some of them.
But well, lore is kinda interesting (just that, kinda) with some good elements but nothing you will ever care or keep grinding and searching for more, seeking to turn on your Switch every morning in thirst for nice puzzle resolutions, big and epic fights, potentially awesome re-playability... To be honest, for a game said to be metroidvania Hollow Knight is just sad and disappointing. Ah, the music is also GREAT, but once you finish the title you wanna ask yourself why you wasted that many hours in your life when they could be well spent avoiding this and doing anything else that crosses your mind.
If you're curious about it, go ahead but you have been warned. At least turn the volume up and enjoy both the music and the view, as it's all it got to offer.

The gameplay is perfect. The music is perfect. The characters are perfect.. The story is beautiful. I played it for around 120 hours, and unlike some games previously mentioned, every hour felt new and rewarding.

It's also one of the hardest games I've ever played, but this just adds to the spark. Your character becomes faster and stronger as you find new powerups and upgrades. but it is you, the player, who improves the most. For one DLC boss I had to literally go away and train for a day.

The gameplay is fine-tuned to perfection, with incredibly tight movement. The basics are simple, but the skill ceiling is very high. It's very satisfying to move your character about and, even though death is inevitable, at no point does it feel unfair. You'll always know what you should have done differently.

There are some very tough optional areas and bosses, but for more casual players these can be skipped. The runs from benches (your save points) back to the point of death can sometimes feel frustrating, but personally I never found it too annoying (especially as you get better at traversing).

The world is masterfully built, and you'll want to explore every nook and cranny. The lore is there if you want to discover it and is incredibly captivating. The soundtrack is superb and the whole artistic direction is really something to behold. A nice touch is how everything makes sense in the game world, for example how you unlock and build your map up, placing markers on it, etc.

From top to bottom this is a wonderfully put together game, and will reward anyone willing to invest time into it.

This is a true indie masterpiece. The more you play, the more you want to explore the bug underworld. The game isn't easy from the start, but it gets to a point where it's nearly impossible for unseasoned players.

Hollow Knight is Fantastic. The Music, Artstyle, Gameplay and also the Story is really nice.
At first the Path is pretty clear but at a certain point you can pretty much go everywhere.
There are many Things to explore. It can be a whole new Area but also maybe just a little secret.
The free DLCs are all there and bring some fun Challenges. You can just play it trough once and put it aside but if you are bored you can pick it up again and just try to beat harder Challenges like getting 112%. When i first started playing i was like "Im never going to do that" and well i ended up doing every Boss no hit. The Game also has some flaws so its just a 9.

Its pretty much a must for everyone that likes Metroidvanias

    1. I could not figure out where on earth to go. It wasn’t like Breath Of The Wild. Which gave you some direction but still made it fun to explore. This game doesn’t give you any direction. And it is not fun to explore simply due to movement and confusion. Metroid games made it so much fun to get lost but here nope. 2. Oh boy...

Look, I got so bored, and so mad at the fact that you have to go BACK to where you died and fight a shadow copy of yourself just to proceed every time you die? WHY? The fun of hard games is being able to instantly try again. But this is not fun. This is annoying. So I just realized I wasn’t having fun. So I stopped.

Even when you do, it only fills in when you save at a bench and if you already have a map of the area. On top of that, I only found a few of the charms useful as many took too many slots to be worthwhile.
That aside, I rarely had to look at a FAQ (which is rare for metroidvanias) and thoroughly enjoyed my time. It's also much bigger than expected.

I picked it up a couple years ago when I first bought my switch, and have played through it multiple times since. It's not perfect, but for the price tag it might as well be. The art style is beautiful and unique, and every area feels distinct in both appearance and sound design. You are never hand-held through an area either, rather gently directed with your skills and upgrades making different areas accessible, or more easily accessible, as you go.

The controls are tight, and there are so many collectibles, which makes it a very satisfying game to 100% (or 112%). Most bosses are challenging, but their moves can be learned with practice. It can be a difficult game, but from my experience you get better as you learn move patterns, and you can always make things easier for yourself by taking the time to explore and gain new skills/strengthen your weapon and spells before returning to a particularly difficult boss.

The story is a good one, but also very subtle. You have to go searching for it if you want the full picture. Most clues about the lore are hidden behind lines of dialogue, inside collectibles, or on the lore tablets you encounter. The main explanations that you get to the full story are locked behind optional challenges, such as extra bosses or the platforming nightmare of path of pain. The writing is sparse and placed with purpose, which means your journey is rarely interrupted and therefore your immersion is rarely broken. Characters are also fun.

Definitely pick it up if you have the chance. The game is very content heavy, with Hallownest expanding more and more with every area unlocked, and free DLC. Super fun to play. :)

It’s one of those rare games where every aspect of its design seamlessly blends together to create an unforgettable experience. First of all, it's a Metroidvania, a genre based around 2D exploration and combat, and Hollow Knight excels in both categories with flying colors. As the Knight, you descend into the ruins of a once great kingdom trapped in a stasis of decay, Hallownest. Throughout your adventure you meet all sorts of charming characters, dangerous creatures, and fierce combatants. Speaking of combat, it is fantastic. The genius of Hollow Knight's combat hinges on two factors, precision in timing and the soul mechanic. In fights, every swing of your nail has to be performed at the right time. Demanding it may be, it’s incredibly rewarding when you learn the intricate patterns of a combatant and emerge victorious. Next, soul is a substance that you gain from striking enemies. The most effective way to heal yourself is to consume soul, so in order to play defensively you must first engage with enemies. However, you can’t move while healing, leaving you vulnerable. This adds strategic tension to every encounter. The soul system, in tandem with the precise diligence of timing attacks, gives combat a natural ebb and flow. That great foundation leads to some of the best boss fights I’ve ever encountered. A majority of them are exceedingly well designed, wonderfully creative, and immensely rewarding to overcome. Outside of being a challenge, I really appreciate that each boss belongs in the world, they all serve to deepen this game’s outstanding world building. Hallownest as a fictional setting is so well realized and incredibly intriguing, it is a joy to uncover its history and secrets by exploring its labyrinthine tunnels. I love just being in this world. Every time I return to the game there’s an extra little detail to appreciate, or I’ll stumble upon something that I have yet to discover. Hollow Knight uses its ancient ruins, character dialogue, and visual hints as a vehicle to paint a greater narrative. It’s so much fun trying to piece all of these elements together, you feel like an archeologist. Another pillar of this game’s design is exploration, so naturally progression is tied to it as well. On your descent you unearth new abilities by exploring. Theses abilities then reward you by enabling traversal to areas that were previously unreachable. At first you’re subtly lead by a trail of breadcrumbs to the first major ability, but after that it’s up to you to figure out where you want to go. That’s why I love the world design, it has clear structure but encourages the player to approach exploration based on what they value. It’s the most immersed that I’ve ever been in a game’s world. The art direction is also stellar and greatly added to my immersion; the dingy atmosphere, intricately detailed backgrounds (reminiscent of HR Giger’s work), combined with the minimalist character designs, all culminate in a strikingly unique visual identity. The soundtrack is also great, it’s equal parts haunting and jaunty. I can’t compliment this game enough, it’s near perfect in my book. The developers are even great people, Team Cherry is honestly a godsend. The digital version of Hollow Knight is only $15 and it has more content, value, polish, and soul than most AAA games. There are no microtransactions and all of the DLC is free. Its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is currently my most anticipated release. There are some things that you might want to keep in mind if you consider purchasing it. Hollow Knight is one of the hardest games I’ve ever played. The demanding nature of combat, intense boss fights, challenging platforming, and vague storytelling keep it from being accessible for everyone. Expand

HOLLOW KNIGHT is a masterpiece of video game narrative. Nothing else even comes close. The story is brutal, challenging, bold, and almost never "fun". It is harrowing, forcing the player to confront violence in a way video games never do. In a medium where everything is John Wick, HOLLOW KNIGHT is Schindler's List.

And just like that film, there were times when I wasn't sure I could keep going. It is a relentless emotional assault that I suspect will force even the most jaded gamer to feel empathy. The game is a work of art - every aspect feels crafted at the highest level. Visuals, audio, controls, animation, level design, performance. It is astounding. And frequently beautiful.

With moments you NEVER find in video games. But I cannot overstate how harrowing it is. It feels like 2 seasons of the darkest TV show you'll ever find, and it frequently better than most TV on the air. That's saying a lot. I think it is an IMPORTANT game. It tore me up, and I will never, ever forget HOLLOW KNIGHT is a game that will change you.

In short, HOLLOW KNIGHT put me through hell. I did not enjoy it. I wasn't supposed to. I was affected by it. Like no game before. I am in awe of it. I am recovering from it.

Hitting a mob rezults in dmg, you spend literaly hours traveling inside maps beacuse you dont have a fcking teleporter, developers have a problem for acid lakes and spikes. I played recently hades, undertale, dead cells, but this game is far beyond playable, they were intuitive, not like this where u need to use z x c. Ur stuck with a **** weapon with **** abilities you can never swap to a better one or range. Its dog****, dont even bother Expand

I don’t have a favourite game of all time, but this game is certainly my favourite of recent memory. I won’t say anything else because the game really has to be seen to be believed. The low price is a true bargain as I would buy this game for full retail price. Yes it’s that good, now go out and get it.

It's as if the masterminds behind Metroid, Castlevania and Bloodbourne tied an entomologist to a chair, put a gun to thier head, and demanded a refreshing new idea for a charming, yet still challenging, platformer RPG.

It took a couple of hours before I saw what was so good in Hollow Knight.

The atmosphere is everything, melancholic, cute, menacing and mysterious. The gameplay is simple yet so efficient and precise. It is a die and retry though. It's hard and pretty unforgiving if you are careless or too fast. It can - probably will - get frustrating in some zones. But it's also incredibly

The music is memorable. The NPCs that you meet are adorable and so enticing. You can even use a variety of builds thanks to the badges. The quality and quantity in that game is very impressive for a three-man team.

This game doesn't coddle you or give clear instructions so pay attention for clues like signs that will lead to vendors and checkpoints, and when you get stuck just go explore other areas. Personally, I did use guides for some of the harder to find buts, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment personally. I'd recommend going in blind and then decide if/when you need a guide or the wiki.

They are some small things I definitely would correct because sometimes it can ruins your fun for sure (benches really far from bosses which make you lose so much time to go back to the boss everytime you die (which will happen a lot)). I feel this wasn't really thought of and it's kinda sad because after almost 10 hours of playing I almost stopped playing because I got discouraged by some unfair parts. Adding more benches would not have made the game more easier, just less frustrating. And what's the point of creating a game that is frustrating for no apparent reason.

But outside of that, it's kinda incredible the amount of work put in that game, for such a small team, and such a small price.

Big studios should get more inspired by indie devs because it's really rare that you have a 15$ game that have you spend 45h just to finish the game (not even completing it - you have to be a little masochist to do that).

All in all it's a masterpiece and I hope the next one will be as good (with MORE BENCHES *wink wink*),

    Un must play.

A game that I randomly found that I thought would be worth a few hours turned into a pice of art that I poured over 100 hours in (which is a whole lot for an indie game.) Everything about this game is pretty much perfect: the exploration, the game mechanics and gameplay, the enemies and bosses, the animation, the artstyle, the environmental storytelling, the deep interpretive lore, and everything in between.

This game is the marriage of the fantastic, explorative gameplay of Super Metroid and the atmospheric storytelling of Dark Souls, and I love it to death. Christopher Larkin's orchestral score is a masterwork: not only haunting but beautiful, intense, and emotional.

one of the few problems I have with the game is some of the late-game Godmaster content. **** Pantheon Markoth. The Pantheon of Hallownest would be fine if these dream bosses weren't made arbitrarily difficult by their arena changes, as well as no reliable way to practice in said arenas.

In all, this is easily my favorite games of all time, and if you haven't picked it up yet, I highly recommend you do. It's on pretty much every platform and it's about 15 dollars, sometimes even less (it's free on Playstation for November!) If you don't pick it up, you're missing out on one of the greatest indie games (or video games in general) of all time, and I cannot wait to see what they do with the sequel.

Yet one game succeeds them all. This game combines every tiny little detail of these games and packs them into one package. Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania ever made. This game is the culmination of a few small developers and one composer who, through a few game jams, made a masterpiece. Hollow Knight almost never loses its footing on its 20-40 hour adventure. The game is more polished than marble. The game has very little areas it lacks in, and even in the ones it does lack in they are usually not glaring enough to take away from it. Games have never ever, come so close to perfection in every possible aspect as this game. Like “God of War” this game isn’t nessecarly amazing because it’s good in one are, but it’s great in almost every area. This game is worth every cent, buy it.

For me the character and game world were awful looking. Felt like kiddies halloween drawings with some neon thrown on. The sound wasn't memorable. I couldn't tell you about the boss battles because I never got to one. It just wasn't fun to play, or nice to look at. It controlled so well but was just so unlikeable as a game that I didn't want to play it after a very short time. It didn't give off any sort of atmosphere or vibe, just felt like a neon world of bugs. I know it probably captured the look it was going for as it seems to be trying to achieve that Halloween concept but that is all it achieved, a tacky halloween concept with no substance, or atmosphere.

Like I say the controls and the characters responses to my joypad movements were exceptionally well done but for me that mechanical response was all they got right. I don't like games that lack cohesion and character and this had neither.

Hollow Knight is an incredible achievement that combines smart game design, a rich world, and sharp combat, with an enthralling insectoid world and a story just begging for you to find it. Team Cherry’s title is a high watermark for Metroidvanias, as the satisfying abilities and countless collectibles add variety and meaning to exploration, rewarding every discovery. Yet, while the challenge is a rewarding part of the process, I do wish that the title made some concessions and shone a bit of light in the darkness for those first fledgling steps.
