    ~ WELCOME TO HERMITAGE! ~

But beware: Ye who enters here might start questioning reality as they know it...

Investigate mysterious cases by taking on the role of a less than motivated bookshop owner, a former anthropology professor who for unknown reasons has never been seen outside of his bookstore.

With the help of a hacker genius on the run, a self-proclaimed detective and a short-tempered legal consultant, you must get to the bottom of a row of horrific incidents, bearing in mind the supernatural horrors that lurk within the pages of Hermitage's Lovecraftian book collection.

Hermitage: Strange Case Files does many things right, with well-written characters, interesting cases, and incorporating gameplay that affects the story’s outcome. If you are looking for a very good visual novel and enjoy creepy mysteries with a twist of supernatural to solve, Hermitage: Strange Case Files is a solid choice.

In general terms I’m very open about the fact that I struggle with “playing” games that trend in the direction of being visual novels, andIn general terms I’m very open about the fact that I struggle with “playing” games that trend in the direction of being visual novels, and that should be kept in mind with my thoughts on this title accordingly. To the game’s credit, it does manage to throw out some interesting threads to pursue narratively, and allows for at least some periodic activity. That said, there are stretches where it feels like you're being washed over by a tsunami of text to wade through, and while it can build some intrigue its sheer volume can at times also be exhausting as you wait to actually do something other than just advance to another wall of text. If that sounds like your jam, and you want to read more than act, there’s plenty of oddity to explore here, albeit quite slowly. However, if you were just looking for something to amp up the creep factor in the spirit of the season to enjoy more lightly you’ll find it requires much more investment to get a return than a more traditional game would.
