Earth is now a golf course for the ultra-rich. The rich fled to Mars but venture back to a desolate Earth for a round of golf. Each hole in the wasteland offers its own little story and possible puzzle to sink the perfect shot. Play through destroyed brutalist monuments, crumbling shopping malls, and abandoned museums as neon signs and poignant graffiti take swings at current events, Silicon Valley culture and humanity. Piece together the full story of how humanity fell through three distinct sources. Details from the lone golfer’s story, who's come back to Earth for one last game. The Radio Nostalgia From Mars broadcast that gives a glimpse into the lives of those who escaped. And the narration of a “secret spectator” watching from a distance...Be accompanied by a purposefully composed soundtrack as well as personal stories broadcasted on Radio Nostalgia From Mars. The station caters to citizens of Mars, nostalgic for Earth as they listen to music from the 2020s, and dial in to share their memories of the planet. A smooth-voiced radio DJ keeps the show flowing with updates and announcements hinting at a not-so-glamorous life on Mars. Three distinct modes mean every golfer can find something for their tastes. Casual players can focus just on the story and a relaxing scenic round of golf in Story Mode. Those looking for an extra challenge can beat each hole under par using skill and puzzle solving through Challenge Mode. While the total pros can try Iron Mode, where there’s almost zero room for error. Easy-to grasp controls and a minimalist UI underpin the whole game so anyone can easily pick up and play at their own pace. Expand

If worse comes to worst and we face the actual end of human civilization here on planet Earth, don't worry! You'll be able to book passage off-world – you just need to happen to be one of the most disgustingly rich people alive. Then you'll be all set! [Issue #58 – March/April 2022, p. 24]

Telling a cautionary tale about society isn’t usually the goal of an arcade sport game, but that’s exactly what Golf Club Wasteland does. That it’s also fun to play is a nice bonus, providing an oddly relaxing and challenging experience for puzzle and platforming fans alike.

Golf Club: Wasteland is a narrative adventure based on the simple foundations of a game of skill, where we will find different levels through decadent settings and we feel a nostalgia that we did not expect.

Golf Club Wasteland is a thought-provoking piece. Its story, not only told through radio but also your golfer's diary, is expanded on further after you beat the game, making it a worthwhile experience overall. It’s worth noting that the audio is on a loop and you will eventually run out of new content from the radio station, but it’s an incredibly effective oral storytelling mechanic. Seeing as this is Demagog Studio’s first outing, I am very keen to see how they grow as a developer. There is some amazing talent and creativity on display, and should all the pieces fall into place, barring ecological catastrophe, their next title would be one to watch out “fore.”

There’s a lot to discover and uncover in Golf Club: Wasteland. Each course offers rewards in the form of log entries, detailing the events that lead the character you play as to where he is now. The game may not be super long, but a lot of love is clearly present from the development team. If you’re looking for a calm game to just kick back, put on some headphones and just play, few get to nearly the same level of peacefulness.

This is a very enjoyable adventure that successfully combines something as different as playing golf and the end of humanity.

To add a slight downer on proceedings, neon signs adorning crumbling buildings and barren hills in the background rubbed us the wrong way. To be clear, Golf Club Wasteland isn’t a game for children thanks to the colourful language featured on the radio, but a few of the neon signs were just needlessly childish, if not entirely inappropriate. These featured seemingly random words plucked from the urban dictionary which completely pulled us out of an otherwise pretty engaging and deep narrative. Not enough to totally spoil our pleasant little post-apocalyptic walk, but enough to be irritating.

I loved it so much, I got the wife playing it. What's on display here is the presentation, and believe me when I say that I'm not usually the kind of guy to care about such things (can't stand games like Flower, Journey, etc.). The golf itself is simplistic and noob-friendly (like a party game). It seems to mainly serve as a wrapper for the audio experience (and the unique premise of playing on post-apocalyptic Earth). I would not have it any other way! You play a level of one hole and then move onto the next stage to play another hole. The game is simple and good fun. I am enamored by the audio presentation to such a level that I plan on purchasing the soundtrack immediately after posting this review. Honestly, I would not change a thing about this game. I am excited to see what else this studio will do in future. Expand

The golf itself is overly simplistic and often relies too much on trial and error, but Golf Club Wasteland still makes for a relatively memorable experience thanks to it’s original soundtrack and the haunting story told through the in game radio station.

I was genuinely engaged in the story throughout my first playthrough, The golfing in this game is very simple - it is really just something to do while you listen to the story and admire the lovely graphics. Most of the holes were fun to play, but some of the course layouts can be quite frustrating. I would not pay full price for this, but it is an enjoyable (short) playthrough if you can pick it up on sale. Expand

Less of aThis is one of those titles where the name of the game may lead you astray, though I will admit that it is generally accurate. Less of a sports title and more of a forward reflection of our world’s demise you’ll play as a sort of tourist visiting the ruins of civilization of Earth to shoot some holes. The majority of the entertainment and opportunities to understand the state of the world come in the form of the local radio station that both plays some tunes and recounts tidbits about what went wrong. The golfing itself is a bit on the simplistic side, though to do well you will need to learn what nuances there are. Thankfully you can opt for one of three modes that will dictate how well you’ll need to do to proceed so if you want to just be along for the ride that’ll work, and if you opt for the toughest mode be ready for some frustrations for sure. Coming in with a budget asking price it’s absolutely a unique experience, just be sure you understand what you’re in for before plunking down to pick it up on the eShop.
