Overall, Golem Gates, is a unique take on the card-playing genre and welcome addition to the Switch library. Nonetheless, it has some minor flaws, even if it remains functionally intact. Either Way, Golem Gates is a must try for anyone looking for a strategy game on Switch and/or a fun multiplayer option! I can definitely see this game being something I come back to during airport gameplay sessions, or even just when I have a bunch of time to kill.

Golem Gates is a great strategy title that blends CCG and RTS elements into an enjoyable combat-heavy form, while offering a world and soundscape that I immediately fell in love with.

Golem Gates successfully joins elements of Real Time Strategy games with those of card-based strategy games for an effort that provides a good level of strategic complexity and an interesting art style, as well as laudable online functionalities. It's also an accessible game, although it can feel too easy once the player has crafted a good enough deck of cards.

While I’ve only played the Switch version, I have to imagine that the original PC release of Golem Gates would be a lot of fun. All of the actual game design is fantastic and very addictive. Unfortunately, this is another instance of a great RTS game not translating well to a traditional controller. Add to that the performance issues on Switch and the console release becomes an even harder sell. Were it not for a truly delightful core gameplay loop, Golem Gates would be an easy pass. As it is, there is a compelling experience to be found, but it’s buried deep.

Golem Gates is generous with its content, but is for a fairly particular audience. Its complexity is enough to put off people that are new to the genre, but strategy fans will get a kick out of it.

It's unfortunate that the action is too pacy for the Switch controls and there wasn't more attention paid to strategic depth, balance, and how the games various systems would interact with one another, because Golem Gates had all the potential to be something truly amazing.

Overall, fans of RTS games may get some fun out of Golem Gates, but it’s hard to get around the fact that this mash-up of tactical RTS gameplay with the random nature of the deck-building element of the game leads to a watered-down tactical experience. If you’re happy enough to enjoy it for what it is you’ll get a decent amount of fun out of the various modes on offer, but anyone looking for a serious RTS or deck-building experience would be best sticking to either genre exclusively, rather than taking a chance on this well-meaning but misguided mishmash.

Golem Gates feels like the type of game that would have been better served staying at home on the PC platform. On Nintendo Switch, an already dicey conceit gets exposed even further by poor controls, leaving a game that only the most die-hard RTS or card-battling fans should attempt to play.

Play in tablet mode with joy cons in each hand. If you play this way you can use the touch screen controls while holding the joy conPlay in tablet mode with joy cons in each hand. If you play this way you can use the touch screen controls while holding the joy con (optimally not in a grip so you can click and drag on the touchscreen still). This solves almost all the control issues some people complain about and the Switch is the only console that would let you do this so why not take advantage. You can box select units with the touchscreen so that you dont have to select everything on screen (the y button by default). There are a lot of options for playing with other people and a few maps to start out with. Hopefully they add more maps later but first they need to get a player base. This is an amazing game so please play taking full advantage of the Switch, using both joycon (separate from each other held in each hand) AND the touchscreen. Full Review »
