The actual gameplay is rewarding and only introduces the slightest of stumbles that are negligible compared to the agency and interactivity afforded by being a video game. In terms of gameplay, there are certainly titles that offer greater variety and complexity, but the beautiful visuals, fantastic soundtrack, compelling story and likable characters easily elevate Forgotton Anne to the level of being a truly excellent game.

Its artistic style is simply great. In addition, it has an interesting story of guarantors of order against rebels that works perfectly with the main mechanics of taking actions in the role of a police officer in a city in crisis.

Forgotton Anne is an evocative, artistic triumph that nails that feeling of a ‘living anime’. Sure, the puzzles are hardly mind-blowing, and some later sections may test your patience, but the beauty of the art and the gentle humour of the writing should carry you through these irritations. Animation buffs should dive in without reservation, and we’d recommend anyone with even the slightest interest check this out.

A bizarre mix of weighty subject matter and cartoon presentation that somehow works perfectly in portraying a morally complex world and its characters.

Despite its title, Forgotton Anne is far from forgettable. Its story is deep, its characters are nuanced, and its journey is emotional and powerful. Unfortunately, its stiff platforming and uninspired puzzles hold it back from being a must-play. For fans of adventure games, Forgotton Anne is a surprising gem that'll provide plenty of memorable moments over the course of its 7- to 8-hour run. For those looking for a more cohesive melding of story and gameplay, however, there are simply better options available.

There were times when I could not begin to guess what I was supposed to do to solve a puzzle, and had to resort to youtube (and was still scratching my head), and there were times when I couldn't get an action to work and had to resort to youtube to convince myself to keep trying it (e.g., Why can't I go down these stairs? Oh, I can). Not often, but these things are nits in the game. I also found it frustrating that saving was not up to me. There are a generous number of save points that happen automatically, but since the autosaves seldom call attention to themselves, you don't know how far back you might be cast if you have to stop NOW. (OTOH, they are in pretty good spots when you're going to have to try a puzzle multiple times; sometimes, you've done the wrong thing and can't fix it.)

Good diversion for a rainy weekend, and worth the on-sale price.

I will try to be as spoiler free as possible.

    First off, The good:

Visuals - This game looks amazing on most parts. There are a few scenes involving a certain character that looks unpolished, especially its jumping animations, but those are far and few.
A great looking game that has a Ghibli feel to it. That's why I bought the game in the first place.

Sounds - The background music is mostly ambience and it matches the tone of the game. The sound effects and voice acting are decent too. Sometimes the lips don't sync properly, but for the most part, it does its job well and immerses you in the story.
P.S. The credit song is amazing.

Story - The story has this fantastical and whimsical feel of Ghibli movie but with a noir thriller spin on it. For the most part, it works out well. You meet quite a few interesting characters and likeable characters but most of them don't feel fleshed out. Your relationship with a certain character also seems forced and felt like the writers nudged it in to speed up the story. But overall, a decent story and I am quite satisfied with it.

    Now, the Bad:

Controls - This controls of this game are like the antithesis to Mario games. The movement feels very stiff and clunky. The Devs probably made it so that it matches with the game's style, but c'mon, there's a limit. Think Bubsy but in 2d and with an input lag of 500ms. Jumping is a chore, Long/high jumping feels like **** Like wtf? I dread every platform in this game because of how ****ty the controls are and it just breaks whatever immersion I had.
The controls are so bad it makes it makes Bubsy 3D's seem like a masterpiece.

Gameplay - This game feels like it has an identity crisis. It tries to be a story focused point 'n click type adventure, a platformer and a puzzle all at once and it comes out like that one chemistry experiment that looks cool but bows up in your face when you peer into it.
As a story focused point 'n click type adventure, it just doesnt have enough world building and barely any interactivity to work.
As a platformer, well, as the controls are pure **** the platforming is also pure **** Also, why does it take forever to climb stairs? This game made me hate stairs. It legit made me go,"F***. I hate stairs."
As a puzzle, it just feels like they added the puzzles to pad out the game. They are uninspired and frustrating. Frustrating not because the puzzles are tough, but because of the aforementioned state-of-the art controls. There is one particular puzzle near the end of the game that is so bad and so unpolished that it made me wonder if the Devs forgot to remove that bit by accident.

    Overall thoughts:
I wanted to like this game, the visuals are great and the characters kept on pushing me on, but after abour 2-3 hours, I trudged on just for the sake of it. I finished the game, but it felt like a chore doing so. Thank got it's not a long game, It took me 8~ hours. Probably more that half of it spent on those f****** stairs.
Simply put, it's just not fun.

"If it's not fun, why bother?"
