The actual gameplay is rewarding and only introduces the slightest of stumbles that are negligible compared to the agency and interactivity afforded by being a video game. In terms of gameplay, there are certainly titles that offer greater variety and complexity, but the beautiful visuals, fantastic soundtrack, compelling story and likable characters easily elevate Forgotton Anne to the level of being a truly excellent game.

Its artistic style is simply great. In addition, it has an interesting story of guarantors of order against rebels that works perfectly with the main mechanics of taking actions in the role of a police officer in a city in crisis.

A bizarre mix of weighty subject matter and cartoon presentation that somehow works perfectly in portraying a morally complex world and its characters.

Forgotton Anne is an evocative, artistic triumph that nails that feeling of a ‘living anime’. Sure, the puzzles are hardly mind-blowing, and some later sections may test your patience, but the beauty of the art and the gentle humour of the writing should carry you through these irritations. Animation buffs should dive in without reservation, and we’d recommend anyone with even the slightest interest check this out.

Despite its title, Forgotton Anne is far from forgettable. Its story is deep, its characters are nuanced, and its journey is emotional and powerful. Unfortunately, its stiff platforming and uninspired puzzles hold it back from being a must-play. For fans of adventure games, Forgotton Anne is a surprising gem that'll provide plenty of memorable moments over the course of its 7- to 8-hour run. For those looking for a more cohesive melding of story and gameplay, however, there are simply better options available.

"Moral choice" idea falls apart towards the end when it becomes clear the writers didn't know how to allow you to make choices in the most crucial moments, thereby forcing certain aspects of the overall main story. This was disheartening, mostly because the puzzle elements are there but too infrequent this to be a puzzle game, the platforming is there, but too infrequent (thankfully as it's clunky) for it to be a platform game, and the "RPG, choice matters" elements are there, but as I've stated, they fall apart when you wish you could make a choice the most.

All in all, the best way to describe this game is by looking at a short example of creative immaturity. When asked in an interview, in the early days, why this game was called "Forgotton" and not "Forgotten," one of the developers mentioned that they just wanted to be more creative about the title; later on, they claimed you would find out as the story progressed - this is not true. Obviously, they made a spelling mistake and it stood by for so long that they just couldn't admit to it. The game could've been called Forgotten Anne and it would've made no difference.

It's this kind of thinking that ended up hurting the game... this half-assed mindset. Judged from the beginning, it has so much potential; judged from the end, it's only a little better than mediocre. And I actually don't doubt it deserves its low User score. People should only buy it if it goes on sale.

The gameplayThe only reason I am not giving this game a perfect 10 is because of the ambiguous ending. The cinematic and score were beautiful. The gameplay was fun and whimsical. There was enough "dark" in the story to remind you that you're not watching a Disney film. Really good looking and good playing game! I can't wait to see what else this studio comes up with!
