A game all about recapturing the energy of the 90s beat-em-up, Final Vendetta works hard to take you back in time and delivers a great game in the process. Combat feels right, plowing through enemies is fun, then, to top it off, the visuals and music sell it all wonderfully. I wish there was a little more modern flourish and a touch more imagination, but what we have is still a great game at its core.

Final Vendetta is an interesting beat'em up that, although it doesn't innovate too much, it does have interesting features, such as four different game modes that "force" you to play it several times to unlock them. This makes it a very replayable title either solo or doubles.

Final Vendetta does an able job of using and enhancing tried and tested formulas of the past, and is great fun for either one or two players. Its brevity is ameliorated by its single-credit format; a bold but welcome move that makes learning to clear it rewarding for all the right reasons – but it’s a setup some may struggle with. There’s still room for experimentation in this genre with regard to original systems, and sadly Final Vendetta doesn’t really attempt any of that, instead opting for more traditional '90s arcade fare – albeit with lots of variation in how you smack people around. If that’s enough to tickle your fancy, you’ll feel well-served by Bitmap Bureau’s stab, but others might feel like they’ve walked this street before.

So it’s not exactly a mixed bag, as the moment-to-moment play of Final Vendetta is a lot of fun, albeit hard as nails, and the presentation is terrific. There are a lot more items in the plus column here, than the minus one. And yet, it’s hard to recommend this game to anyone with only a passing interest in the genre.

Final Vendetta is a superb game for any fan of a good beat 'em up, harking back to the days of Streets of Rage 2 and Final Fight. FinalFinal Vendetta is a superb game for any fan of a good beat 'em up, harking back to the days of Streets of Rage 2 and Final Fight. Final Vendettas biggest sins are also a staple of this genre however, simple controls but nothing worse than you remember from Streets 2 or Final Fight, "Boss" encounters that in later stages become regular enemies, and a short playtime.

I don't see how you can blame a game and mark it down for having the same pitfalls as every other game in the beat 'em up genre but with that said even for a beat 'em up Vendetta is surprisingly short - to the tune of half hour once you "git gud", enemies oddly lacking in attack variety and the backgrounds are just a bit too static - not even any swaying of things like lamps, signs, or bushes, a poor explanation of the controls (you aren't even told how to do certain specials), and a rather high price. Given these pitfalls the game must be rated taking these things into account.

I sincerely hope we see a Final Vendetta 2 on Switch, PS4 etc, but with the following amendments to make it a true memorable legend; online multiplayer, more stages and a branching story path, unique bosses, less static backgrounds, and a "tutorial" that doesn't forget to tell you how to do all of the moves the game has.

With the changes made by the developer following the release to make the game more balanced Final Vendetta is a worthy addition to any beat 'em up aficionado's collection or anyone that enjoys shorter games and likes something that has a moderate challenge to it.
