Felix the Reaper

Great puzzle design and an entertainingly morbid setting make this a little gem.

Felix the Reaper is a fun puzzler that nails some of the most important aspects: difficulty, level design, and style. While the environments may not be as varied and the controls not as well executed, the title works well and should be on the radar of anyone who's fond of solving puzzles as a dancing Grim Reaper.

With a lovable protagonist and a soundtrack to die for, Felix The Reaper’s innovatively designed puzzles are hindered only by a fussy camera.

Felix the Reaper is very original and fun, which is something we can’t really say about many puzzle-based games. It struggles to stay fresh after a few hours, but it’s always enjoyable.

There’s a lot to love about Felix the Reaper. Its puzzles are deep and challenging, its presentation is deliciously morbid, and it’s packed to the rafters with charm and character. Unfortunately, the Switch version of the game is held back by an unwieldy control scheme, a lacklustre resolution, and agonisingly long load times, which all hold back what could have been one of the best puzzle games of the year. That said, I cannot recommend it enough… but maybe play on PC instead.

It’s a shame, because for all of the story missteps and relatively simple gameplay, there are plenty of small touches in the game that make it rather enjoyable.

Driven by an exquisite and eclectic soundtrack, Felix the Reaper is a fun and challenging puzzle game. Too easy or too difficult depending on the way the player makes use of the cheats, this title may not delight all fans of the genre but it's rather likeable.

It’s charming nonsense, and with plenty of additional options to replay levels to challenge yourself further, it won’t be a game you’re done with in a hurry either, once it has its hooks into you.

Felix the Reaper is an excellent game on paper, but its execution dooms it. While the unique concept shines—and I doubt I’ll be forgetting such a lovable face of death anytime soon—the actual gameplay made it a bit of a slog.

Luckily we have the groovy beats and slick moves by Felix that distracts from how mundane or how terribly difficult the levels become. Perhaps having varied gameplay and level designs would have helped keep things interesting. Casual fans of this type of genre may find Felix The Reaper to be too difficult after a certain point (the hint button can only help so much); however, this may be right up the alley for those who crave a serious challenge.

Felix the Reaper is easy to love at first sight, but then you’ll fall out of love just as quickly once you’ve actually played it. There’s something here that’s fun and refreshing, but the overall package doesn’t live up to that promise.

Never keeping his dancing to a minimum, the dark humour that underpins Felix The Reaper seeps into the game’s head-scratching puzzles. Who knew that making sure that people die according to ministerial plans could be this challenging, as the greatest flaw can be found in the uneven and baffling difficulty in places which comes in sharp contrast to Felix’s energetic enthusiasm for Mortal Music.

Felix the Reaper is a respectable game that unfortunately stagnates after the first couple of chapters. None of its puzzles are bad; they’re just tough and don’t change much.

It's competent but insufficient and disparate, full of ideas that haven't been fleshed out or meaningfully linked, as if it's all stripped back from a broader original vision. [Issue#139, p.120]
