Another quality game for the Switch collection. If you're a Dragon Ball fan and you own a switch then this is a must buy. Minus one point for not including all the DLC in the package. Still worth a look in for any fighting and RPG fans.

The dlc mission 113 is excessively difficult and many mechanics in this game make it EXTREMELY frustrating. In all honesty dragon ball has been one of the laziest franchises when it comes to core requirements to anything they produce ever since the end of dragon ball Z.

The character creation, and making your own DB character is great, I absolutely love that aspect, and I love character creation in general, however, I feel like there are still plenty of races they could have added into t he game, as well as more diverse builds for characters, like a Super Buu look, or a Kid Gohan look for character build choices.

The game feels part street fighter, when it comes to game play and part monster hunter when it comes to questing, teaming up with other people to complete quests as a team. However, I find that the combat feels a little bare. Now, I know that combos are possible I've seen where people can chain attacks well, and theirs multiple ways of engaging, I just feel that the basic structure of the fighting, like auto attacks wears you down quickly, the game could have introduced different fighting styles for the game to spice that up for example.

When it comes to the campaign, I noticed the ol' Raditz arc, that I've seen in several Dragon ball games before, and the campaign was doing a good job at telling the story so far, about the animated series, doing a good job at not leaving you behind, until a few arcs in, it starts to do a lot of skipping and lacking the cutscenes or dialogue to fill you in. This I feel started around the Cell arc or Buu arc and only got worse.

In the end the game is iffy and wavering non stop as you play, it's a nice game at its core, but the polish feels lack luster at best.

Xenoverse 2 narrative is nice to see however is confusing, and is inconsistent with its own canon that half of the time you will be questioning a lot and by the end of the campaign is a anti-climatic finish. The graphics are nice, however the modeling can look ugly and personally took time to get used too, however the environments are vibrant and nice and are suiting to the dragon ball universe. The game play itself is quite fun but can get repetitive as mostly you will be using the same 4 combos. The real fun comes in the skills and this you can spend hours experimenting with, however it doesn't help that the strength of supers and ultimate moves are incredibly unbalance to where you won't even want to try a different move because it is not worth using. The OC creator is nice, and I was able to find tons of enjoyment in creating characters and seeing them interact with the characters of dragon ball. The biggest issue with xenoverse is its inconsistency with difficulty, more often then not it is a breeze, however sometimes becomes insanely difficult without preparation which is both bothersome and just tedious. Over all despite the many issues there is plenty of value and fun to be had with xenoverse 2. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A few years back I purchased this game because I was a huge fan of the Dragonball series. I had recently read all of the manga back in high school, and I wanted to be a part the action. And what I had believed was a simple character versus game turned out to be so much more. An original character customization adventure that recreates the original battles from the Dragonball Z franchise! Mixed in with few fights from Super...and Grand Tour, sure why not? It has its fans, who am I to judge.

But what I am going to judge is the main story levels, which are just packed with high and low moments. In this adventure, you take control of an original character as a member of the Time Patrol. You'll take part in missions to correct the changes in history caused by Towa's minions and help take down various villains from the series. But before gettin started, you need to put some thought and care into the character customizer. I love games that have these kinds of mechanics!

Freedom is one of the most important elements of a game and I glad a lot of modern video games are taking advantage of these mechanics. Its encourages replay ability when you have new moves to try out or a new face to interact. It makes a game feel more valuable in that sense. You can choose from five classes. Human, Saiyan, Namekian, Freeza, or Majin. Each class comes with their own strengths and weaknesses and unique super forms. You customize their color scheme, size, and even the voice.

I'd say I like this creation system a lot more than Skylanders Imaginators. While that system has a lot more options, most of the parts don't align with the Sky Lands lore. But here in the Xenoverse, legit care is put into the system, especially in the animation system, so the player feels like a complete character rather than a walking weapon.

So yeah, I'm happy to know that the system isn't cheap, but what about the actual levels? One thing that really bothers in video game series that try to tackle on a customization system, is that most developers spend too much time and energy into making the creation system, that little to no care is put into the level or the theme design.

Take Yo-Kai Watch 3 for example, thematically the game looks interesting with its American themed level design. And the cat Yo-Kai creation system is colorful. But it's mixed in with awful mini games and a really underwhelming story. Well I'm happy to say, that the levels in this game are actually really fun. Each mission will have you fight villains from the past in a 3-D combat system. It feels sweet to do this on the switch, devastating your opponents with merciless combos, and then blasting them with beams of light...its a rush and I love it!

Usually these levels will have you team up with Goku's friends to defeat past foes powered up with Towa's evil magic. I thought these fights would become repetitive at first, but then the game starts throwing movie villains at me! Heck yeah! Seeing the Meta Coolers have a dialogue exchange with Perfect Cell saying that they want to enter the Cell Games is hilarious and yet is also a terrifying idea.

Its nice that these battles take place during the sags they were released in. It's like universes are merging together to make these creative fights. My favorite fight in the game though is against Captain Ginyu. Trunks finds out he stole Vegeta's body and goes to help him, but then he gets his body stolen! And then I have to go through all these hilarious battles until we can put a stop the body snatching!

Fights like these are intense, sometimes I need to stock on lots of good healing items in order to take on the foes with massive health bars. But other times, I just enjoy myself, and learn what it means to be a great warrior. The only fights I can't stand in the game, are the great ape battles.

During the clash between Nappa and Vegeta, they transform into Oozaru, and this fight made almost rage quit the game. Attack from close range and you get sent flying, attack from far away with Chi blast and the fight takes forever. And the only way to officially deal damage is to take out the stun gauge, but that's really tricking to do when their's a second ape attacking in the background. Thematically the fight looks cool, its just a huge difficulty spike.

What also ticks me off are some of the hub area design choices. Every once in a while, the Supreme Kai of Time shouts in the microphone and advertises the Hero Colosseum, and it really hurts my eardrums. I'm not a fan of some of the hub area design choices, but this the one thing I can't turn off or edit. It's not bad voice acting, this one voice clip is just way too loud.

Overall, I have some nitpicks here and there, but this is a pretty sweet game. As for my thoughts on the climax, its just alright. The game's conclusion is more silly than epic. The journey is more entertaining than the goal.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is a massive experience for fans that is fun to play and packed with content. On the flip side, the combat can quickly get repetitive, and the need for grinding doesn't help, either. Add a few technical hiccups, and the Nintendo Switch version is the least desirable one of all. It's still playable and enjoyable on the hybrid device, but it's not as good of an experience as on the other systems. Some may prefer the mobility of the Switch system over the downsides, but if you have the choice and don't care for mobility, I'd highly recommend picking up the PC, PS4 or Xbox One version of Xenoverse 2.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 looks, sounds and feels like Dragon Ball Z. Voices are spot-on, cinematic are true to the original and the battles are epic. A few characters are way too wordy, but so is the source material, so I’ll give it a pass. This is a love letter to Dragon Ball Z, and anyone who ever enjoyed the show will find something fun here. Just make sure to bring some friends.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is a competent port on the Nintendo Switch. While it has obvious stutter in the online lobby and the framerate doesn’t match that of its rivaling consoles, being able to play in handheld mode with little difference in quality is a plus and will help you tackle the game’s expansive list of content from anywhere.
