I have Doom Eternal on Xbox and wanted to try to see how it is on the switch and i was not disappointed. For a large game that is compressed into 18GB of space, its functional and still fun to play. What drags this game down to two points is the glitches.... Like for example, not being able to to complete all combat areas despite killing every enemy... Then falling off the map three times.I have Doom Eternal on Xbox and wanted to try to see how it is on the switch and i was not disappointed. While I will not go into gameplay, DOOM Eternal is simply one of the best first-person shooters on the Nintendo Switch. Succeeding a great port of DOOM 2016, Panic Button has again delivered a fantastic port I never thought the Switch could ever show. The graphics take a noticeable hit, but the game is very stable, and personally, it's my vote for Game of the Year 2020.

Doom: Eternal on Switch is as expected a downgraded version of the game, though still enjoyable.
Due to it's fast-pace, push-forward combat, the low fidelity graphics wont matter that much. Unless of course, you have played in other platforms it would be a big step-down. But if you are like me, playing this game for the first time ever on Switch it is a blast of an experience. Over all

But if you are like me, playing this game for the first time ever on Switch it is a blast of an experience. Over all the graphics and performance does not compete with it's predecessors. But it is a hand-held/hybrid Nintendo system. so it is to be expected. The game performs at 720p, 30fps both docked and handheld by the way. Aiming wise there are separate types of settings for the joy-con and the pro controller. You can adjust them to your comfort, the default settings are horrible. If you want some reference here's mine. Both horizontal and vertical are on full 100, precision is on default, aim assist on, look smoothing 0, and finally gyroscope both horizontal and vertical are at full 100 also. I have the same settings for the pro controller too, except of course the precision section. I have been mostly complimenting this amazing port but there are some drawbacks too. The cutscenes run at a lower frame rate than 30fps, and it also looks pixely. The film is also letterboxed. I hope there will be a future patch fix for that minor problem. But it does not affect the experience that much at least to me. I think this port is definitely worth it, IF the only platform you have is the Switch like myself. The game is on full 60 usd price which makes me question that decision. I think 30 to 40 usd would have been better because the other platforms costs like 20 usd and has better performance. Over all this is another fantastic panic button craft, I applaud them for it.

Magnificent port from Panic Button once again. The gameplay is very smooth even at 30 fps and the gyro aiming feels so good both handheld mode and docked. I would give it a 9 but the software closed for me a couple of times while i was in the middle of a level, other than that this is an excellent game. Great game. Amazing we are able to play this on Switch. DLC contains annoying enemies which remove the fun sometimes and take out the speed of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you've waited this long and want it for the switch for the love of god, wait for a sale on the eshop. It's digital only which is a huge bummer since I'm stuck with it. Combat is fun when youre not trying to wall jump everywhere, and again, very impressive looking for a Switch game. Overall it's a good game but the platforming sections are frustrating and just not fun, and the full price tag blows. Expand

You all are crazy. This looks awful. Yes, I get it. It's "so amazing" that doom eternal is on switch. But, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I can't express enough how utterly blurry this game is, and I'm honestly not sure if I've ever played a game where it is THIS hard to make out critical objects on screen, be enemies platforms, or anything really. While playing the game on TV mode is unpleasant, showcasing the incredible lengths panic button went to cut down the visuals to make this game run, it's still playable for the most part. Handheld mode, though, is a completely different different story. I've heard reports that resultions in handheld can get down to 360p and let me tell you that happens a lot, and it doesn't even always happen during intense gameplay. And this isn't your grandpa's 360p on his Nintendo 64 back in the day, with simple geometry and bright colors. This is so much worse. Not only is the resolution low, but all of the blurring, antialiasing and other filters panic button has applied to the game render the visuals into a soupy and muddy mess. I finally understood what life must be like for my pet lizard, who apparently only sees objects well when they're in motion. Nintendo 3DS games, at 240p, are more playable and defined than Doom Eternal on switch in handheld. It's not just that it's ugly, you can't even play the game properly. While yes, its impressive the game runs at 30fps pretty solidly most of the time, what's the point when you can't even see properly?

I absolutely can't recommend this game. Not in its current state. You might scrape by if you're just playing in TV mode, but not handheld. And if the game looks this poor in handheld mode, what is even the point of owning it on the switch?

Even panic button knows how poor the game looks. The ONLY way it seems they were able get the cutscenes to even look acceptably sharp was to lock the framerate at 20fps (in handheld) and add letterboxing (so a lot of the characters in the cutscenes are cut out of frame. Lmao). But you know what? The cutscenes actually made me wish the whole game was locked to 20fps, because at least I could see what was happening on screen then. If you've been watching gameplay videos of handheld mode and thought "oh, this is just YouTube's compression, it probably looks better in real life", no, it looks worse in real life, and that isn't YouTube's compression you're looking at. That's just how the game looks.

I really respect Panic Button, and I have no doubt that they worked their asses off to even get this thing running on switch, but this is a project that should never have happened. Doom Eternal is an amazing game, but not on switch.

Absolutely needs motion blur, really really needs it. That is really my only problem with the game as of right now. Everything else is on point for a switch port. It controls well, it looks good, and for the game itself, it's fun. There's good combat and weapon variety. but the lack of motion blur is a big turn off for me. DOOM Eternal turned the game and the whole franchise into a joke that doesn't even takes it self serious.
Everything DOOM 2016 achived was thrown away into the garbage; the world building, characters, story and somehow even gameplay.

The gameplay in 2016 was one of the best in any FPS, it felt fluid and amazing. DOOM Eternal has, what it feels like, a fixed and static gameplay system that you can't control. Example: You are forced to use certain weapons on enemies too kill them; which ruins the famous term "Shoot at it until it dies"

It's no longer "shoot at it until it dies" as you get punished for it. Biggest example (of many) are boss fights. Every boss (except the final one) is no longer dynamic like in 2016. Every boss has a fixed pattern and you have to do certain things before you can attack the boss for a *limited time*.

DOOM Hunter - Destroy the shield.
Marauder - Wait for the eyes to flash green.
Gladiator - wait for the magic shield to go down.
Khan Maykr - Forced to use the meat hook and fist before you can attack her for a limited time.

The world building is by far a big let down of any game I've played. In 2016 you slowly move through Mars getting closer and closer to your destination as seen from the world, Example:
On the first level you could see the argent tower from the very beginning and after each level you the tower gets closer and closer, and when you're finally there you get to climb up the whole tower.
DOOM Eternal has none of that simply because you don't get to stay in one place at all.

The absolute biggest issue with this games world building and immersion is teleportation.
First you're on Earth, then in a different dimension, then in hell then back to earth and now you're somehow in heaven. This completly ruined the DOOM universe to me.
2016 had Mars and Hell. Eternal has countless dimensions that have no place in DOOM whatsoever.

And now the biggest let down for me and the biggest middle finger to 2016 is the destruction of Mars. Everything the DOOM 2016 has built up with the UAC, gone, in mere seconds, simply because of a cutscene that tried to blind the player with "WOW, a cOoL bIg lAsSer" while destroying the home place of the DOOM franchise for god knows whatever reason.
But seeing how Eternal has chosen Fantasy over Sci-fi, I wouldn't be suprised if Mars was magically brought back.

But what makes me hate Eternal the most, is the aracady direction ID went with this game.

    HUD/UI:
The HUD looks like something you would see in a mobile game. I have no doubt that this HUD was inspired by Apex legends. EXACT same geomeotry and use of bright colors. The thing with Apex is that the bright colors are very needed for fast navigation with the ammo managment. ETERNAL DOESN'T NEED THAT. Hugo or Marty mentioned that the bright colors purpose is to distinguish the ammo, which makes absolutly zero sense as it was never needed at all.

    Floating props:
This is something that completely annihilated the immersion this game had to offer.Floating Weapons. Floating book pages. 2 Meter long question marks. (+Fcking confetti when you walk through it).
I feel sorry and bad for the people who made the concept arts and desing for the levels.
Imagine making something so big and eerie just so there can be a big floating question mark in the middle of nowhere.

    Oversaturation of levels:
DOOM 2016 had three color choices for levels to stick with: Red, Dark Green and "cool" colors.
DOOM Eternal uses the entire color spectrum for each level. No level is easy on the eyes when it comes to the colors.

    Ridiculous skins:
This come back to where I said "a joke that doesn't take itself serious".
If you told me 4 years ago that the next game DOOM game would have the slayer wearing a greasy t-shirt with a "extra thicc" text on it I would have called you crazy
I want you guys to look at 4 examples I gave you and imagine 2016 with all of that. It's simply impossible.

Last thing I wanna talk about is the story.
DOOM 2016 had a very simplistic story. You wake up and start killing and destroying. This is all DOOM should be. 2016 also had a cliff hanger that was for nothing as Eternal doesn't start where 2016 stopped.

Hayden isn't a smart human that died of cancer and got reincarnated as a robot. Hayden is god of all of recreation.

VEGA isn't a super computer that was created and tested by UAC employees (That needs absolute zero cooling btw). Vega is a god in a USB stick.

I've to stop here as I've reached the limit.
DOOM Eternal has **** up the entire franchise. I see no future of DOOM whatsoever. The next DOOM should just be a mario styled arcade shooter. Just dimensions you jump from level to level killing demons in a arena with no story or a goal.

I have no idea how Panic Button managed to cram one of the most spectacular action games into Nintendo Switch. It’s an amazing achievement, but of course it came with a price – the game runs smoothly enough at 30 fps, but looks ugly, and playing it with the Joy-Cons is a nightmare. I highly recommend using the Pro Controller, or better still, experiencing this terrific shooter on another platform. [02/2021, p.54]

Doom Eternal is decent on the Switch and is a great game overall even with its issues. If you must play this game on the Switch, then be aware of what you are getting. If you can get it on another platform, I suggest you do that.
