I came into Dicey Dungeons with high hopes and I was thoroughly blown away. It’s so smartly designed in how the classes and equipment all work together to create consistently unique and creative instances where you have to squeeze the usefulness out of almost every play style and strategy. The episodic design fits it very well, because it makes the early parts far more approachable, while keeping the variety up enough that even later episodes slow you down, you still have so much to enjoy. Dicey Dungeons is an amazing game that I’d almost call a roguelike game for people who don’t like roguelikes. You do have to like turn-based combat, though. And dice.

Well, this game is just plain awesome. It’s kind of a dungeon-crawl roguelite thing, but the battles use an interesting dice mechanic that really helps the game stand out. As you make your way through each floor, you’ll find various skills that you can pick and choose from to fill out your battle actions. Each turn you roll a number of dice and assign them to those skills to use them. There are lots of different kinds of enemies and skills, and the maps themselves, while simple, have some points of interest and branching paths you can choose to explore. One of those games where you fire it up meaning to play for twenty minutes and end up playing for four hours. I’d expect no less from Terry Cavanagh, though.

Terry Cavanaugh has done it again with Dicey Dungeons; this is easily one of the best roguelike titles you can currently purchase for the Switch. Loads of gameplay variety, fantastic music, a high skill ceiling and friendly visuals make this a thoroughly gripping and fun experience you won’t want to miss out on. If you like roguelikes or card games, we’d highly recommend you pick this up as soon as you can – and even if you don’t, we’d still encourage you to check it out regardless.

Dicey Dungeons is another worthy roguelike experience for Nintendo Switch that’s not only incredibly satisfying to play but also features a unique hook in its use of dice. We may be a little spoilt for choice when it comes to the roguelike genre but Dicey Dungeons is an addition you’ll want to make time for.

Dicey Dungeons makes the most of its possibilities. It is original, challenging, extremely varied... it manages to create with a simple roll of the dice the emotion of knowing if we can resist until the next fight. It mixes many really interesting formulas for the players.

Dicey Dungeons isn't quite a deck-builder. If it were, however, it would be the best deckbuilder on the Switch. It's often been compared toDicey Dungeons isn't quite a deck-builder. If it were, however, it would be the best deckbuilder on the Switch. It's often been compared to the excellent Slay the Spire, but it's much more varied, addictive and–in my humble opinion–fun than StS. It didn't let me go until I'd beaten the final boss–and that was no easy feat.

    Pros:
    * Brilliant mechanics: The game is a mix between a dice-thrower and a deck-builder–a deceptively simple combination that pretends to be all about luck, but it's actually about understanding the rules and using them to your advantage.
    * Astounding variety: Each character, level, and enemy introduces its own spin to the rules. Dicey Dungeons is essentially a simple idea twisted into dozens of variations–and it keeps introducing new radical changes until the very end.
    * Many hours of gameplay: With six characters, each with six episodes, plus one final fight, this game should keep you busy for a long time. And after that, there's always "Hard Mode", if you can stomach it.

    Cons:
    * Can be frustrating: Some levels are a breeze, but others are hard enough to be discouraging. The roguelike-inspired loop really bites when you fail the same 30-minutes level for the 10th time.
    * Sometimes, luck *does* count: Yes, this game is mostly about strategizing and managing your options–but there are times when your sophisticated planning gets undone because you encountered the wrong enemy or powerup.
    * Some levels feel repetitive: It's great to have so much content, but even with all the variations, some levels feel a bit too similar to each other.
