Frantic, challenging and shocking. It offers a good experience thanks to its perfect controls, different game modes and the randomness of each game.

It’s unfortunate that the roguelike genre has gotten so stuffed lately. Caveblazers is a sharply put together game. If I had received it as a birthday present for my Gameboy in the late 90s, I would have played it on every long car ride. It’s tightly made and has a great gameplay loop. It leads itself to some really exciting moments. But after playing through it for several hours, I loaded up the Nintendo store and bought Dead Cells for my Switch.

Caveblazers doesn’t do enough wrong to be disappointing, but it doesn’t do enough right to be exceptional, meaning that it occupies that awkward space in the middle. The utterly unremarkable visual style and simplistic combat is offset by a surprisingly deep well of unlockables and well-paced progression systems; this is a roguelike that checks all the right boxes, but never becomes more than the sum of its parts. If you enjoyed Risk of Rain or Dead Cells, Caveblazers is a decent recommendation, but also understand that there are far more memorable titles to be found on the eShop.

I’ve got 25 hours in and I’m finally getting the hang of it. I think I’m gonna beat it in another 10. And then I’m gonna put in another 100 hours beating it over and over again. Maybe 200. It’s so damn fun! I can’t believe it was made by a single person. He is my hero. I wish I paid more for this game!!! Expand

Dungeon crawling hack and slash madness. Really f-ing hard though (at least for me). I’ve clocked like 30 hours all up and only ever beaten the first (random) boss once. Don’t listen to the critics or their middling reviews. The simple sprite graphics and fast paced hack and slash action are what draw me back to caveblazers rather than dead cells. Fu-k the critics. They’re just being critical. Expand

Really surprised at how intuitive the controls are and prefer it to the PC version. Still frustratingly difficult, though. Expand

The controls are very responsive and the action is quick in this procedurally generated game. Every time you die you gain experience toward unlockables which are in the form of cosmetic options and character upgrades. If you are a fan of the genre this is a solid pick on the Switch. Expand
